This continued even after Wato was given a proper love interest, Moriya, though thankfully he managed to avoid DieForOurShip, and continues even after the show ended.

Just how much of it is fans reading into things, how much is [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians genuine intentional implications]], and how much is a RelationshipWritingFumble causing them both to read as [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday less straight and more in denial]] is a topic of debate, but no matter the outcome, it pretty much consumed discussions of the show from every angle.
