* LightNovel/ReignOfTheSevenSpellblades draws heavy inspiration from the Franchise/HarryPotter franchise. The TrueCompanions of the series map conveniently as Decomposite Characters of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but the most obvious example is Professor Darius Grenville, who is very like Severus Snape: he's a thoroughly unpleasant SadistTeacher with long dark hair, is the alchemy instructor and covets another teacher's job (Luther Garland's sword arts position), and was connected to the primary protagonist's MissingMom.

* Ermina from Manga/TheSwordOfParos is a lesbian/transman version of Lady Oscar from Manga/TheRoseOfVersailles. Both have blonde, curly hair, both dress and behave like men, and prefer riding and fencing to activities considered "feminine". Also, both have fathers that decide to force them into an ArrangedMarriage, although Ermina's father is more extreme than General Jarjayes (taking into account that he is the king of Paros and desperate for a male heir to the throne, is understandable). Besides, there's Yurias, Ermina's ChildhoodFriend, who is basically a straight-haired version of Andre; both love the protagonists, although Andre Just to finish, Fiona is obviously inspired on Rosanlie, although the latter is blonde and Fiona has dark, curly hair. But both are orphans, fall in love with the protagonists and are very, very dramatic.

** Lelouch is a main character version of Char, Zechs marquise from Gundam Wing (many say he's a Char clone, but due to Code Geass overtly performing homage to Gundam Wing, that's at best inaccurate), what with both being exiled members of (more or less) royalty, suffering from having their beloved parent murdered, having a sister, planning for revenge, and not allowing that sister to be part of it, or even knowing about it. the betrayals they experience eventually forcing them to play the part of a Genocidal monster and Martyr themselves in order to bring peace to the world.
** Suzaku does at one point was fairly regularly get compared to Kira Yamato. He's a brunet brunette with a super mecha, opposed to violence, has a best friend for a Rival, a romance with a pink-haired pacifist princess...princess... The problem with the comparison is Suzaku is frequently lying to himself to excuse his own actions and uses what powers he has to enforce oppression onto others as opposed to fighting against all sides to find better solutions people had blinded themselves to as Kira did, as Suzaku never fought to PROTECT anything. As time as moved on and Both CG and Seed been re-evaluated the comparison has died a slow death to bearing only superficial similarities. Comparisons to Suzaku being an AMURO RAY Expy however, have risen immensely; due to renewed analysis of the original Gundam series finding that Amuro fought to maintain an oppressive status quo from an Authoritarian Government which the Colonies (Area's in Code Geass) sought liberation from.

***The grand majority of Code Geass Sidestories focused on other characters inevitably recreate the same protagonist-Deuteragonist-Tritagonist Dynamic seen of Lelouch, Kallen and Suzaku. In Akito the Exiled, this Dynamic is seen of Leila Malcal (Lelouch), Akito Hyuga (Kallen) and Shin Hyuga Shang (Suzaku). In Oz the Reflection, it is Marybell Mel Britannia (a 'stayed with the family' version of Lelouch, even having her own puppetry geass and being brainwashed by their father), Marybell's Knight/Lover Oldrin Zevron (Kallen) and their central foe Orpheus (Suzaku). The case for them being Expies is especially large in Oz, due to Marybell's own grief at the consequences of her actions while brainwashed have her take part in Lelouch's Zero Requiem plan just so Oldrin will kill her.

The Franchise/DragonBall franchise has lots of these:
* A number of characters introduced in the original Manga/DragonBall are based off of characters from Literature/JourneyToTheWest.
** Goku is an expy of
*** Sun Wukong, The Monkey King from Journey To The West, mixed with Comicbook/Superman. It's even down to having the former's EXACT SAME name in a Japanese reading, though in the original Wukong/Goku's case, Dragon Ball-Wukong/Goku has started to pay less homages to him day by day ever since his fame in the US.
*** In his early days, he was basically a SpearCounterpart to Arale, the main character of Creator/AkiraToriyama's previous work.
** Bulma:
*** Like a number of the early characters, she actually did begin as a loose expy of a Journey to the West character - in this case, no less a person than Xuanzang Sanzang himself (she's on a quest which Goku/Wukong is just tagging along for, she gets into peril and needs saving by Goku, she's far less of an Action Person than Goku, etc). Of course, as time went on these elements drifted away and by the time the Saiyans show up, it can be hard to remember it was there at all.
*** In the original series, she has a personality quite similar to Akane Kimidori of Manga/DoctorSlump, the first success of Akira Toriyama, being a sassy and outspoken teenage girl who serves a StraightMan to the naive and strong KidHero (Goku and Arale, respectively). Even Bulma's first love Yamcha looks a lot like Akane's love interest Tsukutsun. The main difference is that Akane is a full-blooded tomboy, while Bulma is a boy-crazy GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak and that Akane is StreetSmart but not a genius like Bulma.
** Exception for the scar, Yamcha is physically identical to Tsukutsun from Manga/DoctorSlump; both characters at the beginning can not approach women for certain reasons (Yamcha because he was afraid of them, while Tsukutsun is because when a woman touches him she becomes a tiger), they also have AnimalMotifs (Yamcha Wolf, and Tsukutsun Tiger), and their LoveInterest is the spoiled but sensible teenage girl.
* Anime/DragonBallZ:
** The Ginyu Force are this to the popular Franchise/SuperSentai franchise, the whole lovable lot of them.
** Future Trunks is the unborn future son of the female lead, and he travels back in time to stop a group of robots from taking over the world in the future. Sounds familiar... (He even shares John Connor's hairstyle and taste in clothes.)
** Android 16 to Android 8 from earlier in the series. Both androids are fully mechanical creations that are incredibly strong but considered failures in spite of it due to their well-meaning, caring personalities. 16 is even a multiple of 8.
** Umpteen times in the Non Serial Movies. Almost every villain is an expy of a main series villain in some way, along with many of the movie-original supporting characters. Just for example, Lord Slug is an expy of King Piccolo (they're both evil-hearted Namekians), Cooler is an expy of Frieza (they're brothers), Janemba is an expy of Majin Buu, etcetera.
* Anime/DragonBallSuper:
** Goku Black is basically the canon version of Turles, Goku's original EvilCounterpart and the main antagonist of Anime/TheTreeOfMight. Interestingly, Goku Black's debut episode featured lettuce frequently, which was most likely a reference to Turles, who, like Black, closely resembled Goku in appearance, and even having a similar status of being pure evil. Both have similar personalities, since both are vicious sociopaths with a veneer of friendliness... although Black is more evil and deranged than Turles.
** Fused Zamasu similarities to some characters as well:
*** He is similar to Super 17, in the sense that both characters are fusions of two counterparts of the same individual. However, in Super 17's case one of his fusee is an artificial incarnation (as Hell Fighter 17 is an artificial copy of Android 17).
*** Zamasu's Half-Corrupted form design resembles that of Two-Face.
*** Several fans have noticed many similarities between [[spoiler:Infinite Zamasu and Giygas. Both being incomprehensible, formless EldritchAbomination level monstrosities who's immense power comes at complete lack of sapience.]]
** Universal Survival arc features several expies of movie villains (that's right, expies of expies) as competitors from different universes:
*** Frost shares similarities with Cooler, as both are the third best known member of Freeza's race.
*** The most prominent is Kale, a seemingly submissive and mild mannered female Saiyan who can transform into a huge berserker beast, mirroring Broly from the three Non Serial Movies . They share a similar appearance, Kale says the same things Broly did, and many visual shots in the anime are the same as the movie Broly starred in. They also both steamroll a bunch of weaker fighters and suffer from PowerIncontinence. The Toei character sheet even regards her as "similar to that Legendary Super Saiyan."
*** A more downplayed example is Caulifla. As a fight-loving Saiyan who's quick to learn new techniques by watching somebody else do them and who basically cares only about finding challenges and loyalty to her friends, she's the Universe 6 counterpart to Goku.
*** Aniraza is one to Hatchiyak from Anime/DragonBallPlanToEradicateTheSaiyans. He has a very similar design (despite his different color scheme and having Hildegarn's facial structure), backstory (artificial lifeform partially spawned from the fusion of a scientist with his machinery), powers, and speaking patterns. In the anime, he also meets his end the same way: a team assault of five foes simultaneously blasting him in a beam struggle.
*** Pirina takes his role as an arrogant and antagonistic Super Namekian, plus his overall appearance, from Lord Slug. This includes his tall and very bulky build (otherwise unique among Namekian characters), use of WhiteGloves, facial structure, and his signature attack being a BreathWeapon.
** Bardock in Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly. While the original incarnation was similar, this incarnation of Bardock is more in line with Jor-El from the Franchise/Superman mythos, as a loving father that alongside his wife sent his son to another planet, one that no one would bat an eye. Depends on which Jor-El incarnation, but you get the point.

* Most Franchise/Gundam series will have a character based on Char Aznable, a.k.a. a CharClone. Wikipedia lists 16 Char Clones in the entire Gundam franchise to date. They're most easily identified by the fact that they wear a mask for little or no reason and occasionally have a penchant for piloting red mobile suits. They're almost always TheRival and/or TheDragon. Notable Char expys include Carozzo "Iron Mask" Ronah from Anime/MobileSuitGundamF91, Chronicle Asher from Anime/MobileSuitVictoryGundam, Zechs Merquise from Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing, Lancerow Darell from Anime/AfterWarGundamX, Rau Le Creuset from Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED, Neo Roanoke from Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny, Graham Aker from Anime/MobileSuitGundam00, Zeheart Galette from Anime/MobileSuitGundamAGE, Full Frontal from Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn & even a literal clone of Char in the Literature/GaiaGear series of novels & audio dramas. Char clones show up quite often in other HumongousMecha series' as well (see Elzam Branstein's entry in the Games section). Lelouch from Anime/CodeGeass is a borderline example. Apparently the idea of him wearing a mask came from executives who said something along the lines of "It just wouldn't be a Sunrise show without a mask". Ironically, Char is an Expy himself from Prince Sharkin, TheDragon of Anime/Raideen, Creator/YoshiyukiTomino's first HumongousMecha anime.
* Sayla Mass, Char's younger sister, has expies of her own in Cecily Fairchild, Relena Darlian, and Cagalli Yula Athha (who also shares traits with Relena). The common traits shared among these characters are that they were exiled princesses who adopted a different alias, has a strong relationship with the lead character, and she has a relative who's (usually) the lead character's main rival.
** Expies of Relena would also include Dianna Soreil, Lacus Clyne, Princess Rele, Marina Ismail, and Kudelia Aina Bernstein. These princesses are defined by their commitment to pacifism and willingness to embrace their royal heritage.
* Char's boss, Gihren Zabi has also had his fair share of expies. There's Fonse Kagatie from Victory, Siedel Rasso from Gundam X, and Patrick Zala from Gundam SEED, all of whom share Gihren's status as amoral military dictators who preach a MasterRace philosophy and have a love of superweapons. Patrick even duplicates Gihren's infamous "Sieg Zeon!" speech in his rant about "Who exploits the Coordinators"? Gihren's son and/or clone, Glemmy Toto has his own expy in SEEDs Muruta Azrael, who shares his looks, childish demeanour, creepy interactions with women, willingness to use children as weapons, and total lack of scruples.
* Anime/MobileSuitGundam had Lalah Sune as the franchise's first PhlebotinumGirl. Since then Four Murasame & Rosamia Badam, Puru & her clones, Quess Paraya, Stella Loussier, and Yurin L'Ciel have danced in her shoes and one another's, fighting for the villains, developing a connection to the hero, and eventually dying horribly.
* After Char, the most commonly duplicated character may be Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundams Yazan Gable, a brutal thug who was the franchise's first, and most archetypal SociopathicSoldier. His progeny include Rakan Dakharan of ZZ Gundam, Rezun Schneider of Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack, Ash Grey from Gundam SEED Astray, Ali Al-Saachez from Gundam 00, and Decil Galette from Gundam AGE, as well as Luciano Bradley of Code Geass infamy, and Gauron from LightNovel/FullMetalPanic.
%%* Though he's not replicated as often as Char or Yazan, DarkMessiah and ManipulativeBastard Paptimus Scirocco has three notable expies in Treize Khushrenada, Gilbert Durandal, and Ribbons Almark.
* Mecha Expies are also par for the course in Gundam. Wing's Shenlong Gundam is an Expy of G's Dragon Gundam (both are Chinese dragon themed mecha with extendable arms and carry a polearm), X's Leopard is an Expy of Wing's Heavyarms (loaded with lots of guns and the main weapon is a BFG large Gatling gun), and Deathscythe and Deathscythe Hell resemble Master Asia's Kowloon and Master Gundams respectively (with retractable metal "cloaks" that make them look bulkier than they really are).
* The grunt suits are almost always based on either the Zaku since they have the green color scheme, CyberCyclops head design, and plain tank-like build of Zeon's original mass-produced mobile suit.
%%** In the CE timeline, here are their mecha expies:
%%*** Strike = RX-78-2 Gundam
%%*** Freedom = Gundam Formula 91 + Gundam Double X
%%*** The Impulse is based on the RX-78-2 Gundam, but plays a role similar to the Gundam Mk. II in Destiny. Similarly, Destiny played a role similar to the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam.
%%*** Strike Freedom = Freedom + Hi-Nu Gundam
%%*** Akatsuki = Hyaku Shiki
%%** Speaking of Mecha expies, the Aile Strike Gundam now has a expy outside the franchise: The Lancelot Air Calvary. The Vilkiss is inspired by the Strike Freedom and Destiny.
* Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz has Mariemaia Khushrenada, who is based on Mineva Lao Zabi, being the daughter of a deceased major villain who's used as a figurehead by the true leader of the new villain faction.
* Sting Oakley and Auel Neider are Expies of two characters from Gundam SEED, with Sting playing Clotho Bauer to Auel's Shani Andras. The Extended as a whole are a collective expy of UC's Cyber-Newtypes, each being Muggles who were upgraded with surgery and drugs to duplicate the the powers of Coordinators and Newtypes, respectively.
* Garrod Ran is something of an expy of Judau Ashita, since both were war orphans who couldn't help but get caught up in the events of the world around them and both grew into real badass (or in the case of Garrod BadassNormal) pilots, and even though they both had reason to neither one of them succumbed to their HeroicBSOD for very long. Both also specialize in stealing mobile suits at the start of their respective series.
* Setsuna F. Seiei from Gundam 00 is pretty much a dead ringer for Sosuke. Pilot of a physics-defying SuperPrototype Mecha? Check. ChildSoldier in a wartorn Islamic country? Check. AxCrazy rivals with unhealthy obsessions? You got it. Need I go on? Makes you think their creators were trying to one-up each other.
* It goes much further with Lockon Stratos and Kurz Weber who are both cool snipers who excel at in giant robot sniping, who can get almost any girl they want, though this might have a bit to do with their shared voice. [[spoiler: They also both die in combat sniping. Lockon turns out to have a BackupTwin who becomes the new Lockon, while Kurz ends up having been NotQuiteDead.]]
* Both Gundam Wing's Heero Yuy (the original one, the namesake of the Gundam pilot) and King Peacecraft, as well as Gundam SEED's George Glenn, were based on Zeon Zum Deikun, as charismatic visionary leaders whose ideologies play major roles in their respective series . Uzumi Nara Attha is based on King Peacecraft. Uzumi is the only one of these to not be a PosthumousCharacter .
%%* As for the rest of the Gundam SEED characters:
%%** Murrue Ramius = a gender-flipped Bright Noa, with Archangel being White Base
%%*** Murrue has her own expy in Gundam 00s Sumeragi Li Noriega; her CommanderContrarian, Natarle Badgiruel, lives on as Kati Manniquin.
%%** Mu La Flaga = Sleggar Law with some of Char's Quattro persona thrown into the mix.
%%** Andrew Waltfeld = Ramba Ral, with Aisha as his Crowley Hamon.
%%** Nicol Amalfi = Quatre Raberba Winner; they're both kind-hearted pilots with a love for music.
%%** Admiral Lewis Halberton = General Revil
%%** The DOM Trooper pilots (Hilda, Mars, and Herbert) = the Black Tri-Stars; they even have the Tri-Stars' signature Jet Stream Attack. The only difference is that one is gender-flipped and this time they're EliteMooks in the heroes' army.
* And now Gundam AGE has Yurin L'Ciel as an expy of Tiffa Adil from Gundam X, being both loli MysteriousWaif characters that help the main hero with their clairvoyance powers.
* Emily Amonde and Fa Yuriy are expies of Frau Bow in this following concept: She is a semi-major character who despite having no direct conflict with or impact toward the main story, initially has a close relationship with the protagonist, and join the boy's fleet to "look after" with him. She likes him, but he doesn't notice her because he loves somebody else. She also tends to suffers from the StayInTheKitchen issue.
* Anime/GundamBuildFighters:
** Mr. Ral looks like - and has the same voice actor as - Ramba Ral, an EnsembleDarkhorse from the original Anime/MobileSuitGundam. The reason he's not actually Ramba Ral is because Build Fighters is set in an AlternateContinuity where Franchise/Gundam is a work of fiction.

* Most Franchise/Gundam series will have a character based on Char Aznable, known as a CharClone (or just "A CHAR").

** Suzaku does fairly regularly get compared to Kira Yamato (enough to get a FanNickname out of it, anyway). He's a brunet with a super mecha, opposed to violence, has a best friend for a Rival, a romance with a pink-haired pacifist princess...

Dewicking Anime/Pokemon, as the contents have been reorganized under Pokemon The Series.

* Max Taylor of the anime series VideoGame/DinosaurKing is very much an Expy of Ash Ketchum. The similarities include their weird hair, both being comical protagonists, yet serious about their fighting, having a pet with lighting attacks and both having the same (English) voice. The connection is helped in that Creator/VeronicaTaylor uses the exact same voice she used for Ash.

* The protagonists of Anime/FutariWaPrettyCureSplashStar, Saki and Mai, are pretty clear expies of Nagisa and Honoka from the previous season. Saki and Nagisa are both orange-haired BookDumb tomboys who love food and play a particular sport (softball for Saki, lacrosse for Nagisa), while Mai and Honoka are both dark-haired, intelligent introverts with a passion for science. They have other minor quirks setting them apart, such as Mai's interest in drawing, and the show gives them further DivergentCharacterEvolution as it progresses. For the most part, however, they are similar to the point that non-fans often conflate them. This was deliberate on the part of the showrunners, who were testing the waters to see if the Franchise/PrettyCure franchise could expand into new territory beyond the tried-and-true Nagisa and Honoka; the next season, Anime/YesPrettyCure5, takes the series in an entirely different direction.

* Marika from Manga/BokuraNoHentai is a clear expy of Nitori from Manga/WanderingSon. They're both (for most of the story in the latters case) middle school aged UsefulNotes/transgender girls with bob haircuts who wear gakuran school uniforms. They're also both very sensitive and prone to TenderTears. At one point Marika even cuts her hair similarly to Nitori's most common style, though she lets it grow out later. Marika is played far more darker than Nitori and she while Nitori . Marika is also attracted to boys while Nitori only showed clear attraction to girls (Takatsuki aside).

* Zero Two of Anime/DarlingInTheFranxx is another expy of Lum Invader. Both sport horns, fangs and eyeliner. Both are romantically obsessed with a boy who they always call "Darling", who they would go to great lengths to be with. Darling in the Franxx also has some references to Urusei Yatsura. The number 002 is once read as "o-ni"; Lum's alien species is the Oni.

* Elfin from Anime/Bakugan is very unsubtly based on the title character of Franchise/SailorMoon, with the only major difference being that she's a frog-like Mon Bakugan. She has her iconic long, blond twintails and OdangoHair combo and invokes the MagicalGirl trope with her TransformationSequence taking longer than that of other Bakugans (on a blue shiny background, no less) and uses InTheNameOfTheMoon speech before doing one of Sailor Moon's iconic poses.
