* CommonEyeColors: Most of the main group have meaningful eye colors, and many other characters do as well.
** GreenEyes ~ Deirdre and Nell. It conveys both independence and a devious nature, as well as jealousy and sexuality. Note that Nell's eyes are a dark green, while Deirdre's are a paler bluish green.
** IcyBlueEyes: Nathan, on the other hand, is frequently described with icy or cold blue eyes.
** PurpleEyes ~ Tama. When attention is drawn to them, she explicitly states that they are simply pale blue that look purple because of blood vessels. However, they do represent her mysterious and regal nature, as well as her supernatural powers.
** EyesOfGold ~ Many Underlanders, who are predominantly supernatural/trickster characters, are described as having gold/amber/pale brown eyes.
** GrayEyes ~ Millicent is described with gray or silver eyes.

** BrownEyes ~ Tucker, Eden, and Alex. This can be easily dismissed as Tucker being Middle Eastern and Eden and Alex being East Asian, but the three of them are the most trustworthy/emotionally stable.

** Lancer ~ Tama, who is both Tucker's foil and his best friend.
** Smart Guy ~ Alex, possibly. He is cyberkinetic, and spends a lot of time on computers, at least.
** Big Guy ~ Logan, though he is also incredibly Book Smart.
** The Chick ~ Eden, the heart of the group, though she is far from useless.
** Plus Deirdre, who is either a SixthRanger or TokenEvilTeammate, depending on her mood. Tama also sometimes qualifies as the TokenEvilTeammate.

* ColdFlames: Traveling spirits frequently appear as Will o' the Wisp type blue flame.

* LadyOfWar: Millicent, oh so much. Tama may also qualify.
* LawfulNeutral: The question that every Hunter must ask him or herself whenever making an important decision: "Will this harm humanity?" All other circumstances ([[VigilanteExecution including legality]]) are to be overlooked. A monster that brutally devours vampires or werewolves can, hypothetically, be allowed to live. Most of the Hunters featured in the series are willing to help their non-human friends, however.

* AuthorAppeal: Frequent mentions of Dan Schneider shows and kid cartoons, long hair, and badass female characters. Also, a bizarre hatred for [[ArsonMurderandJaywalking jaywalkers]].

* IronWoobie / JerkassWoobie: Deirdre and Conway. The vampires also count, as it is explicitly stated that they haven't lost their souls or conscience -- they are simply forced to rip apart human beings for sustenance. This causes most of them to turn into complete Jerkasses.

* HeroicSociopath: The vampires who signed the Peace Treaty. Deirdre also has hints of this.

* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: The main group have specific colors that they prefer to wear or are otherwise associated with them.

* GreenEyedRedhead: Nell Greine and her relatives, although it is pointed out in-Universe as a product of them being Underlanders, with different phenotypes and common colorations.

** This is addressed later in the series, when the vampire goddess Lilith has a nervous breakdown because Underland isn't 'whole.' [[ItGotWorse This prompts her to try to escape into the Real World.]]

** BlueEyes ~ Logan has them, as does every Berserker. They are frequently described as 'piercing' and powerful, but never 'icy' or malicious. Nathan, on the other hand, is frequently described with icy or cold blue eyes.

** BlackEyes ~ Shae, a mysterious character, has them. His grandson also has them.

There are several smaller stories set between the books of the primary series that tend to focus on the secondary characters and their motivations, and the main {{Nakama}} are rarely the main characters.

* {{Nakama}}: The main group is this, to the point where hurting one is a Berserk Button for the other five.

** It's also implied that, at some point in the past, his head was cut off. [[IGotBetter He got better.]]

There are six books in the primary series, each revolving around one of the primary characters.

* The first revolves around Deirdre entering Slanton School in sophomore year. The BigBad is Rebecca, an AxeCrazy vampire who wants to bring back the mysterious [[SealedEvilInACan Coven]].

* The second revolves around Eden in senior year. There is no obvious BigBad, as Eden is being blamed for a series of murders that she didn't commit and don't actually seem to have anything to do with each other... or do they? It's heavily implied that Rebecca's [[ManBehindTheMan patron]] Milo is to blame for the murders...

* The third revolves around Logan in his first year of college. A foster child in the Real World, Logan is struggling to fit in to the society and culture of the Berserkers, while simultaneously dealing with an impending war in Underland and working to keep the Coven from returning from their exile.

* The fourth revolves around Alex in the year and a half after the third book. The BigBad is the Coven, who have finally escaped their bonds and are on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge. Alex and the gang struggle to save themselves and each other as they contemplate crossing the MoralEventHorizon.

* The fifth revolves around Tama shortly after the events of the fifth book. Lines have been crossed and terrible mistakes have been made, and the BigBad is none other than the vampire goddess Lilith -- who will kill to escape Underland and cut a bloody path across the Real World.

* The sixth and final revolves around Tucker, three years after the fifth book. It is mostly an 'after-the-end' type story, with loose ends being either tied up or left to drift in the wind.

* ActionMom: Nell Greine.

* The second revolves around Eden in senior year.
