The series takes place in a world with a level of technology similar (but inferior) to our own, where humans have to live with four different races of monster (vampires, werewolves, ghouls and dopplegangers) hunting them. Unbeknown to most of the humankind, the monsters are actually the rulers of that world, keeping it in a delicate state of balance. People from both sides, however, often threatens that balance, either knowingly or not.
The main focus will be on those trying to keep that balance, and the ambigous morality following, with some trying to turn it for their personal gain and others questioning how much the balance is actually worth preserving and if they shouldn't try to change something themselves.

world.

* AerithAndBob: Usually Bob is the first name and Aerith the second name. Also, monsters usually use just one, Aerith-ish name to make clear they are not human anymore (althought some of them do just use their last name). And then there's Mercy, whose name isn't either Bob-ish or Aerith-ish.
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: Averted, most of the monsters are actually neutral. The evil still outnumbers the good ones, however.
* Antihero: Ether Nitviri and Darius Falnark. The latter is unable to connect to the real world for more than a minute, while the former is mostly interested in living in peace and keeping Falnark safe.
** The vampire Mercy also counts. He is perhaps the most compassionate amongst the vampires (and more than most humans), but he's not above killing and can be pretty ruthless. Plus, all he really wants is to settle somewhere he can call "home".
* Antivillain: Klemtha, Enathi's right arm. She puts a great effort in avoiding unnecessary killing and won't allow any kind of torture, she's also adamant on eating their victims before hunting anyone, not to waste food (she also sees it as a way of respecting the victims).
* BigGood: Delmar, the vampires' Emperor is definitely the one with most power and resources trying to keep peace, and one of the few actually good-natured.
* BigBad: Enathi, the ghouls' Head, the Callers and the Red Sun.
* BiggerBad: The ancestors to the Callers, and the First Ones, who created the monsters in the first place. And, going even farther, the Unknown God who made the First Ones.
* CardCarryingVillain: Enathi.
* CassandraTruth: To be fair, if a vampire with demigod-like power, who also happens to be their emperor, told you to be sincerely just on humanity's side, would you believe him?
** Any monster who's sincerely well-intentioned falls under this trope. Considering [[CrapsackWorld the setting]], it is understandable.
* CrapsackWorld: Monster are actually ruling the world and controlling everything, and the few humans who know it must chose to either work to keep humans slaves or risk starting a war they can't possibly win. And then there is always the risk of monsters going rogue and start slaughtering humans until it's stopped, in which case they have to work to cover it. And then there's the possibility of the older and far more powerful monsters buried awakening...
* EnemyMine: Anyone will team up with anyone to stop the Callers. [[spoiler: Enathi exploits that.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Invoked by Enathi as the reason he opposes the Callers: horrible as he can be, the ancestors are worse [[but it's ultimately inverted: he's actually the Louder of the Callers, and actually intended (and come terribly close) to awaken them, he only stopped because he found out they would have killed him. And that's because ''they'' have standards.]]
** Cormac plays it straight.
* FantasyGunControl: Monster are also in control of progress, so they stop anything that could be dangerous to them (or provide a significant advantage to humans, such as mobile phones) from developing, including nuclear power, flametrhowers, rocket launchers, missiles, grenades and efficient explosives. Some of those things however (like flamethrowers) exist in limited copies, but are kept secret.
* GodOfEvil: The Unknown God.
* GodzillaThreshold: Using granades and flamethrowers (the few that exist) is considered that. Their existence must be kept secret, being weapons actually capable of killing monsters with few effort, so their used is only authorized when absolutely necessary. And then there are spells created only o fight the ancestors.
* HermeticMagic/RitualMagic: The little magic avaliable to humans is this. Monsters haven't that limitation [[spoiler: and neither does Falnark.]]
* MagnificentBastard: The ghoul's Head. He exploits differences and inner conflicts between his opponents to constantly put one againts each other, also [[spoiler: being in charge of both ghouls and Callers, he can, and does, use them both to further his own goals and to cover each other, with neither of the two groups knowing he's also leading the other.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: Enathi, being actually [[spoiler: the Louder of the Callers.]]
* MeaningfulName: "Fedare" is an actual italian archaic world, meaning "to soil".
* NecessaryEvil: Enathi claims to be one. It does admit, however, it's just a lucky coincidence.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Any monster old enough becomes that. The Lords even moreso, gaining secret knowledge and spells to make them even more dangerous. On the humans' side, we have Falnark and Nitviri, the only ones who might stand a chance fighting a Lord.
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler: Falnark. No one understands why, or how, but it seems to have broken his mind.]]
* ReligionofEvil: The Lore, monsters' collection of legends about their origin and ancestors, actually averts it, since it's purpose is to avoid the awakening of such beings.
** The Red Sun however qualifies.
* SealedEvilInACan: According to the Lore, several ancients, the elders, the First Ones and the Unknown God are all buried underground, each one buried deeper than the former. Except they are not sealed, just asleep, with theoretically nothing stopping them to just wake up.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Subverted by the ghoul's Head, he always gives another mission to those who failed him to fix it. [[spoiler: Double subverted, however, since he then uses his position in the Callers to thwart said mission, getting them killed anyway. He also does the same with the Callers.]]
* VillainProtagonist: Cormac Dirnan. He keeps his status by blackmailing or killing any potential rival. He's also a Trustkeeper, meaning he's pratically untouchable, and exploits it.

* AlwaysChaoticEvil: Averted, most Monsters. The transformation always thwarts your morality for the worse. Particullary if you [[CameBackWrong come back wrong]].
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Monsters have hints
of it. Usually downplayed, some play it straight, though. And some averts it completely.
* CameBackStrong: Unless you die of age or illness, that's what happens to you.
* CameBackWrong: Aside the AlwaysChaoticEvil thing, there is also a (really slim) chance your personality is completely rewritten into something horrible.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Weirdly enough, the monsters. They actually ''listens'' to their subjects ideas, they don't always chose the lethal solution to deal with protestors, and mostly interfere behind the scenes. [[PragmaticVillainy They found out that's more efficient that way]].
