** Shane's dark past is not focused on as much, but is still mentioned. In Seasons 1-2, we learn that she was once forced to [[spoiler:work as a (pretending-to-be-male) prostitute, that she was essentially abandoned by her parents, has various drug addictions, etc.]] These events are strongly implied to be the reason she is such a loyal friend, but terrible with relationships/commitment - she feels the need to please others, is satisfied with very little for herself, but is afraid to commit to anyone or anything. The later seasons continue to add heartbreaking details - Shane is thrilled to simply have her own, tiny little room because she's apparently never had her own before. (In Season 6, Jenny, of course, promptly converts Shane's room into a study one day when Shane is out, assuming that since they're now sleeping together, she'll just move into Jenny's room with her!)

* ''Series/OddSquad'':
** Olive's backstory, explained in "Training Day", is that she was a ShrinkingViolet who tried her best and had potential to be a great Odd Squad agent but couldn't live up to the standards of whom would later be her new partner, Todd. Being a SmugSnake who was also GoodWithNumbers, he would consistently belittle her and [[MaliciousMisnaming dub her "Scribbles"]] for the way she would constantly write on her notepad to solve problems, as well as [[TheGadfly generally mess with her.]] Once he made a FaceHeelTurn, became evil, and got fired from Odd Squad as a result, he came back for revenge and unleashed a pienado onto Precinct 13579, attacking Olive's coworkers with pies that were dangerous enough to render those like [[PintsizedPowerhouse Oprah]] unconscious. She managed to stop the pienado thanks to a HeroicSacrifice from Oscar, but it comes at the cost of (initially) being the SoleSurvivor of the attack and becoming a ShellShockedVeteran suffering from trauma who has a developed fear of pie.
** Otis's backstory is a little similar to Olive's, but expands more on his life before Odd Squad. As a young child, he was raised by a group of [[FeatheredFiend villainous ducks]] who would frequent nearby parks and annoy the people there enough to drive them away, developing duck mannerisms and behaviors in the process. He initially believed that it was all in good fun and that he did no harm, but as he grew older, he realized that his family was villainous. When Brother Quack, the leader of the ducks, showed Otis a blueprint of a machine that would bring the Earth closer to the sun and explained how he wished to end winter forever, Otis came to the horrid realization that his surrogate father and brother figure would be [[MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds killing all life on the planet, including himself, without even realizing it,]] and he decided to turn to Odd Squad for help. Oprah and a group of Security agents managed to stop the plan and capture his duck family, but he started to feel regret and became left with severe emotional scars that manifested as him being afraid of ducks regardless of whether it's about the animal or [[{{Duck}} the other "duck"]]. Even after being taken in by Oprah, becoming her personal apprentice, and being hired onto Odd Squad, the fear never went away, and he was forced to keep his past as a villain a secret from everyone but Oprah, not even being able to tell Olympia about it despite the two being partners.

The end result is that the family car went over a bridge, with only Beth's twin sister Kate getting out safely. Their mother died, and Beth was dragged out of the river by a madman called August Cartwright. For eleven years, she was his captive in his basement along with only his son and "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" for comfort". Cartwright forced her to make faces from dead bodies and tend to his equally abusive mother, who would beat her for even the smallest slight. He also forced her to never make contact with her family unless she wanted him to kill them. When she did so and they came, he locked her in the basement and lied to her father. Meanwhile, she wanted to make contact with Kate when the latter went to the basement, but didn't out of fear. After eleven years of this, Cartwright made a slip involving Beth's mother's earrings which led her to finding her mother's head in a freezer. Snapping, she used an oxygen tank and a lighter to kill the mother and fled. Unfortunately, she then ended up in the custody of an island queen called Safiyah. Safiyah, who fell for Beth, wanted to recruit Beth to her army and use her anger against Catherine Hamilton, who lied to everyone about Beth's death and married into her family soon afterward. But, Beth fell in love with her trainer, Ocean, instead. A jealous minion told Safiyah, who not only exiled the both of them, but had their memories of each other erased by Enigma. This action also removed Beth's empathy and reason, and is the direct cause of her becoming the criminal known as Alice, wreaking havoc all over Gotham with her Wonderland gang.]]
