A native of Detroit, Michigan - he was a dancer for most of his life and spent much of his pre-''Power Rangers'' career performing as a dancer and singer on cruise ships. He had been planning to go for an audition for the reality series ''Star Search'' as part of a group. Unfortunately (or perhaps not), he lost his voice on the way there, and the group naturally lost. But while he was on the way there, a friend told him about an open casting looking for actors, martial artists, dancers and gymnasts. Able to demonstrate three of those four skills, he was eventually cast as Zack Taylor, the Black Ranger. Despite the eternal controversy over that, Walter jokes that he never had a problem with it, because black was his favourite colour anyway.
