After his brief stint as a writer during the 1985-1986 season of SNL, Lorne Michaels gave [=McKinney=] his own show: Kids in the Hall, a surrealistic sketch show that has had many comparisons to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Kids in the Hall lasted from 1989 to 1995.

After Kids in the Hall ended, [=McKinney=] joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for the 20th season and stayed on SNL until the end of season 22.

After his brief stint as a writer during the 1985-1986 season The son of SNL, Lorne Michaels gave a diplomat, [=McKinney=] initially got his own show: Kids start in comedy as a member of The Audience, a comedy troupe he'd formed in Calgary with Norm Hiscock, Garry Campbell, Frank Van Keeken, and Creator/BruceMcCulloch in the Hall, early-'80s. Soon the troupe traveled to Toronto, where they met fellow comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall, consisting of Creator/DaveFoley, Creator/KevinMcDonald, and Luciano Casimiri. Soon the two troupes fused together under that title and dwindled down to [=McKinney=], [=McCulloch=], Foley and [=McDonald=], with Creator/ScottThompson soon rounding out the gang. In 1985, [=McKinney=] (along with the other Kids) auditioned for Creator/LorneMichaels to be a surrealistic part of Series/SaturdayNightLive, and he and [=McCulloch=] were hired as writers for that show's 1985-86 season. Not long after, Michaels decided to give the troupe their own self-titled sketch show that has had many comparisons to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Kids in the Hall lasted series, which initially ran from 1989 to 1995.

After Kids in the Hall Kids' show ended, [=McKinney=] joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for the 20th season and stayed on SNL until the end of season 22.

Most of the stuff about SNL is irrelevant to him as a creator.

[=McKinney=], along with Bruce [=McCulloch=], David Foley, and Scott Thompson, was originally asked to be a cast member for Saturday Night Live when Lorne Michaels returned to his role as showrunner in 1985. Of the four, only [=McKinney=] and Bruce [=McCulloch=] were picked, not to be cast members, but to be writers. When the 1985-1986 season proved to be a failure (one that nearly got SNL canceledbut not before some quick recasting saved the show), Lorne Michaels gave [=McKinney=], [=McCulloch=], Thompson, and Foley their own show: Kids in the Hall, a surrealistic sketch show that has had many favorable and unfavorable comparisons to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Kids in the Hall lasted from 1985 to 1994.

After Kids in the Hall ended, [=McKinney=] joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, in the middle of another terrible season the show was going through: the 1994-1995 season (season 20). Unlike most of the cast members during that time (who had either quit because of the toxic work environment at the timeas seen with Janeane Garofalo, were fired for either wearing out their welcomelike Adam Sandler and Chris Farley or plagiarizing jokesas seen with Jay Mohr, or left because they were tired of being on the showas seen with Kevin Nealon, Al Franken, Ellen Cleghorne, Chris Elliott, Mike Myers, Laura Kightlinger, Morwenna Banks, and Michael [=McKean=]), [=McKinney=] (along with Molly Shannon, David Spade, Creator/NormMacDonald, and Tim Meadowswho was originally going to be fired, but Lorne kept him on because they needed at least one African-American cast member and Ellen Cleghorne left) survived the cast overhaul that occurred at the end of season 20 and stayed on SNL until the end of the 1996–1997 (season 22).

During his time on SNL, [=McKinney=] had six recurring characters (some of note include Ian Daglers from "Scottish Soccer Hooligan Weekly", Melanie, a Catholic schoolgirl, and Lucien Callow, a fop often paired with David Koechner's fop character Fagan) and twenty-seven celebrity impersonations (some of note include Mel Gibson, Barney Frank, Al Gore, Paul Shafferwho, believe it or not, was an SNL cast member and the leader of SNLs house band in the 1970s episodes, Mark Russell, Jim Carrey, Lance Ito, Tim Robbins, Steve Forbes, Wolf Blitzer, Bill Gates, and Ellen [=DeGeneres=]).
