* EvilLaugh: Due to voicing ComicBook/TheJoker since 1992, he has this down to ''[[http://youtu.be/lb8fWUUXeKM an art form]]''[[note]]He says that ''WesternAnimation/BatmanMaskOfThePhantasm'' is where he truly began exploring and expanding what he could do with the evil laugh. Surprisingly, the Joker laugh actually originates from Hamill's run as the lead in ''Amadeus'' -- he'd developed a loud braying laugh for the role as Mozart was noted for having an obnoxious laugh[[/note]]. It's been close to three decades as of this last edit, and we're ''still'' not sure what he's inhaling to do these laughs. It's safe to say that his Joker laugh is among the most distinctive and iconic villainous laughs in animation history, alongside those that Lucille La Verne, Betty Lou Gerson, Pat Carroll, and Jonathan Freeman provided for [[WesternAnimation/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs Queen Grimhilde]], [[WesternAnimation/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians Cruella de Vil]], [[WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989 Ursula]] and [[WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}} Jafar]], respectively.

Hamill has also become one of the most acclaimed voice actors in the industry. He's best known for playing dynamic, outright ''evil'' villains (ironically, considering his previous typecasting as a hero fighting against TheDarkSide) in animation; most notably [[Characters/BatmanTheJoker The Joker]] as stated earlier, with many considering his to be the definitive interpretation of the character. He's actually a swell guy in real life, despite the typecasting. He would ''always'' come back to play the Joker if Creator/KevinConroy was portraying Batman in said particular project since he trusted and enjoyed working with him that much. With the death of Kevin Conroy in 2022, his departure from the role of the Joker seems permanent now.

Hamill's career came full circle in 2014, when he lent his villain-voicing expertise to ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'' as Darth Bane, and ''then'' it was announced he'd reprise his role of Luke Skywalker in the Creator/{{Disney}}-produced sequel trilogy starting with ''Film/TheForceAwakens'', and he then reprised his role as the Trickster in the [[Creator/TheCW CW]] ''[[Series/TheFlash2014 Flash]]'' series. * CareerResurrection: After the release of ''Return of the Jedi'', Hamill didn't have a huge amount of work that wasn't directly tied to ''Star Wars''. Then, in 1992, his portrayal of the Joker gave him ''massive'' acclaim, giving him an entirely new niche as a world-class voice actor, almost universally as villains, ironically enough. Everything then came full-circle when he voiced an apparition of Darth Bane in ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'', and he later returned to the role of Luke for the Sequel Trilogy.

* TenMinuteRetirement: Had famously announced that ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamCity'' would be the last time he would voice the Joker. For better or worse, that didn't stick. He retired from the role a second time in early 2023 a few weeks after the passing of Creator/KevinConroy. This one might actually stick since he would blindly accept projects once he was told that Conroy had also signed up, since he trusted and enjoyed working with him that much.

* ButForMeItWasTuesday: When a ''VideoGame/LikeADragon'' fan approached him about his voice work for the original [=PS2=] ''Yakuza'' game on Twitter, Hamill confessed that he had no idea who Goro Majima was, and that he had done so much voice work in his career that he couldn't remember all of his roles. He also stated he'd forgotten that he voiced Chucky in a ''Robot Chicken'' sketch, after he was announced to reprise his role in ''Film/ChildsPlay2019''.

* FlipFlopOfGod: Whether he's done voicing the Joker or not. At first, he said that ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamAsylum'' would be his last time. But then came back for ''VideoGame/DCUniverseOnline'' and ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamCity'', and said that the latter would be his last time, with Creator/RichardEpcar from ''VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse'' stepping in for ''VideoGame/InjusticeGodsAmongUs'' and ''VideoGame/InfiniteCrisis'', and Creator/TroyBaker in ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamOrigins'', ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamOriginsBlackgate'', and ''WesternAnimation/BatmanAssaultOnArkham'', despite the presence of Creator/KevinConroy in most of those projects.[[note]]Creator/RogerCraigSmith filled in for him in ''Origins'' and ''Blackgate''[[/note]] [[spoiler: Despite ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamKnight'' opening with the Joker's cremation, he reprised the role in flashbacks and hallucinations.]] He has, however, made it clear that he will come back for an AnimatedAdaptation for ''ComicBook/TheKillingJoke''--[[http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/conroy-hamill-return-justice-league-action-cartoon-network then came back for]] ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueAction''. And yes, Hamill did voice the Joker in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheKillingJoke''. And then he came back for ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueAction'' and ''VideoGame/LegoDCSuperVillains'' a few years later, but he didn't reprise the role in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanVsTheTeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' (where both Batman ''and'' Joker were voiced by Troy Baker), so it comes and goes. However, with the death of Kevin Conroy, [[https://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/1261810-mark-hamill-explains-why-he-wont-voice-the-joker-again he has announced his retirement from the role]], noting that it wouldn't be the same for him without Conroy.

* FriendshipOnTheSet:
** He and his co-star, the late Creator/CarrieFisher, became very close on the set of ''Star Wars'', with a LikeBrotherAndSister relationship that endured for the rest of their lives. Her death in 2016 left him in almost StunnedSilence, and it is abundantly clear that he was and remains absolutely shattered by her loss.
** Ironically, despite voicing Batman's archenemy, he was friends with ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'' star Creator/KevinConroy and was similarly devastated by his death. Unlike with Fisher, where he was still able to portray Luke Skywalker, Hamill was far more adamant about permanent retirement as the Joker, not willing to voice the character after the loss of the man he called ''his'' Batman.
* GutturalGrowler: Roles like Skips and Ozai are pretty big examples.

* MeaningfulName: Twice over the dude is such a LargeHam that it makes sense his last name is ''Ham''ill, also when it comes to the Joker specifically there is M''arkham''ill.

* ThoseTwoActors: With Creator/KevinConroy as the Batman and the Joker. Following Conroy's death, Hamill had stated that "he [Conroy] would always be [his] Batman", and subsequently doubled down on retiring as the Joker.
* TreacheryIsASpecialKindOfEvil / WorthyOpponent: When ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' was once again renewed in 2022 without Bender's VoiceActor Creator/JohnDiMaggio returning, Mark quickly went to Twitter to state that out of respect for a fellow veteran VoiceActor, he will NEVER audition for Bender. ([=DiMaggio=] would eventually return to the role following continued negotations.)
