Jonathan Scott Frakes (August 19, 1952-) is best known for two things: the voice of Xanatos in the animated series ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'' and the role of Commander William Riker, aka NumberOne, in the critically acclaimed ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration''. Both of which were excellent showcases for his BadassBeard and BadassBaritone voice.

In recent years he has made quite a name for himself as a television director: he has directed no fewer than three episodes each of ''Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine'' and ''Series/StarTrekVoyager'' as well as [[DirectedByCastMember eight episodes]] of ''[[Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration Next Generation]]''. Other directing credits include ''Series/TheTwilightZone2002'', ''Series/{{Dollhouse}}'', ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', and multiple episodes of ''Series/{{Castle}}'', ''Series/BurnNotice'', ''Series/NCISLosAngeles'', ''Series/{{Leverage}}'' and ''Series/{{The Librarians|2014}}''. Feature film directing credits include ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'' (widely considered one of the finest ''Franchise/StarTrek'' movies ever) and ''Film/StarTrekInsurrection'', as well as ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'', ''Film/{{Clockstoppers}}'', and two ''Film/TheLibrarian'' movies. [[ShoutOut All of which have Star Trek references in them at his insistence.]] However, [[CreatorKiller his theatrical directing career was brought to a screeching halt]] with the notorious flop that was ''Film/{{Thunderbirds}}'' (he even called himself the "[[TakeThatMe alleged director]]" on the DVD commentary- it was more Creator/{{Universal}}'s fault as well as the lengthy DevelopmentHell the film went through than anything). One of the episodes of ''Series/{{Castle}}'' that he directed was based at a sci-fi convention, where his ''Star Trek'' references were only outnumbered by the ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' references. (Oh, and he has a [[TheCameo cameo]] in that one, too.) He also [[http://www.treknews.net/2014/12/07/jonathan-frakes-star-trek-3-bring-in-riker/ offered]] to direct ''Film/StarTrekBeyond'' after Creator/RobertoOrci quit (to which the fanbase reacted by starting a Website/{{Twitter}} campaign in favor), but was passed on in favor of Creator/JustinLin.

On the set of ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'', Frakes earned the nickname "Two Takes Frakes" for his economical shooting style. He is the famed TropeMaker for GrowingTheBeard, because there had been a writers' strike between the first two seasons of ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' he, erm, [[TropeNamer grew a beard]] during the unexpectedly extended break (see right): the facial topiary's presence at the script readthroughs for the second season was mere happenstance, but ''Trek'' creator Creator/GeneRoddenberry felt it gave him a far more dignified appearance and decided to ThrowItIn to his character's appearance too. The beard staying then coincided -- and has become synonymous -- with the show's generally-agreed development from something good into something great in the next year or two. All thanks to Frakes' face.

One of anything he did as a director.

He continues to make
the episodes of ''Series/{{Castle}}'' that he directed was based at occasional on-screen appearance, playing a sci-fi convention, where his ''Star Trek'' references were only outnumbered by the ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' references. (Oh, dramatically heavy role in ''Series/CriminalMinds'' and he has a [[TheCameo cameo]] [[LargeHam hamming it up]] in that one, too.) ''Series/AngieTribeca]]. occasionally [[CreatorCamero inserts himself]] into shows he directs, making very brief blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos.

On the set of ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'', Frakes earned the nickname "Two Takes Frakes" for his economical shooting style. He is the famed TropeMaker for GrowingTheBeard, because in between the first two seasons of ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' he, erm, [[TropeNamer grew a beard]] (see right): the facial topiary's presence at the script readthroughs for the second season was mere happenstance, but ''Trek'' creator GeneRoddenberry felt it gave him a far more dignified appearance and decided to ThrowItIn to his character's appearance too. The beard staying then coincided -- and has become synonymous -- with the show's generally-agreed development from something good into something great in the next year or two. All thanks to Frakes' face.

Other directing credits include ''{{Castle}}'', ''{{Dollhouse}}'' and multiple episodes of ''Series/{{Leverage}}''. Feature film directing credits include ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'' (considered the 2nd best TNG movie ever) and ''Film/StarTrekInsurrection'', as well as ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'', ''Thunderbirds'', ''Film/{{Clockstoppers}}'', and two ''TheLibrarian'' movies. [[ShoutOut All of which have Star Trek references in them at his insistence.]] He also directed an episode of ''Series/{{Castle}}'' based at a sci-fi convention, where his Star Trek references were only outnumbered by the ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' references. On the set of ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'', Frakes earned the nickname "Two Takes Frakes" for his economical shooting style.

style. He is the famed TropeMaker for GrowingTheBeard, because in between the first two seasons of Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration he, erm, [[TropeNamer grew a beard]] (see right): the facial topiary's presence at the script readthroughs for the second season was mere happenstance, but ''Star Trek'' creator GeneRoddenberry felt it gave him a far more dignified appearance and decided to ThrowItIn to his character's appearance too. The beard staying then coincided -- and has become synonymous -- with the show's generally-agreed development from something good into something great in the next year or two. All thanks to Frakes' face.
