->''"I have spent most of my life working in the theatre - which is always my greatest love, but the films and television were the providers of the little luxuries of life."''

Hermione Baddeley, born Hermione Youlanda Ruby Clinton-Baddeley, (13 November 1906 -- 19 August 1986), was a British character actress best known for playing brassy, blowsy characters.

She started on the stage, appearing both in revue and in Creator/NoelCoward's plays. Baddeley progressed to film appearances in TheRoaring20s. She played Ida Arnold, one of the leads in ''Film/BrightonRock'', which was followed by films including ''Film/PassportToPimlico'', ''Film/Scrooge1951'', ''The Pickwick Papers'', ''Film/TheBellesOfStTrinians'', ''Film/MaryPoppins'', and ''The Unsinkable Molly Brown''.

In 1958, she played Elspeth in ''Film/RoomAtTheTop''. Despite only being onscreen for two minutes and nineteen seconds, she was nominated for an MediaNotes/AcademyAward; the shortest to ever be nominated. In the mid-60s, she moved from the UK to America, where she made several guest shots on American television.

She joined the cast of ''Series/{{Maude}}'' from Season 3 to 5, playing Mrs. Naugatuck, Maude's elderly and vulgar housekeeper. In 1975, Baddeley won a MediaNotes/GoldenGlobeAward for the role, and in 1977, she was PutOnABus, with Mrs. Naugatuck marrying her lover Bert Beasley and moving to Ireland. In her later years, Baddeley provided voices for ''WesternAnimation/TheAristocats'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNimh''.

She died of a stroke at the age of 79.
