Edward Dmytryk (September 4, 1908 – July 1, 1999) was an American film director who was amongst the Hollywood Ten, a group of blacklisted film industry professionals who served time in prison for being in contempt of Congress during the [=McCarthy=]-era 'red scare'.

He is primarily known for his 1940s noir films and received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for ''Film/{{Crossfire}}'' (1947). Today, Dmytryk is likely best known for directing ''Film/TheCaineMutiny'' (1954), a critical and commercial success that was nominated for Best Picture and several other awards at the 1955 Oscars.

In the 1980s, Dmytryk retried from film-making entered academic life. He taught about film and directing at the University of Texas at Austin and at the University of Southern California film school, and wrote several books on the art of film-making (including as ''On Film Editing'' and ''On Screenwriting'').

Born in British Columbia, Canada to Ukrainian immigrants, Dmytryk moved to California with his parents as a child. He began his Hollywood career as an editor (mostly on B pictures) before moving to the director's chair. He is primarily known for his 1940s noir films and received an Oscar UsefulNotes/AcademyAward nomination for Best Director for ''Film/{{Crossfire}}'' (1947). Today, Dmytryk is likely best known for directing ''Film/TheCaineMutiny'' (1954), a critical and commercial success that was nominated which earned several Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture and several other awards at the 1955 Oscars.
