While at first, she was a member of the Tiller Girls dance troupe, she later changed careers into acting. Her first role came in 1967, in an episode of ''The Charlie Drake Show''. She appeared in a further four episodes by the end of 1968. Finishing off TheSixties, she made guest appearances in ''Not in Front of the Children'' and another one of Charlie Drake's series, ''The Worker''.

Come the start of TheSeventies, Vernon began making film appearances too, with roles in ''Film/TheDevils'', ''Family Life'', and ''Made''. In the 1975 ''Are You Being Served?'' ChristmasEpisode, "Christmas Crackers", she appeared as a crabby waitress in the Grace Brothers canteen. Vernon clearly made an impression on the writers, and the following year she returned for the next Christmas episode, "The Father Christmas Affair", where her waitress was now the surly manageress of the canteen. Mrs. Yardswick as she was known would make appearances in all further series barring the fifth, and by the final few series became more of a recurring character, appearing in five of Series 10's seven episodes.
