Murphy initially got his start in the entertainment industry by playing minor roles in his brother's films, before gaining his first major role in ''[=CB4=]'' as the film's antagonist, Gusto. Come the turn of the century, Murphy became a household name thanks to Creator/DaveChappelle's ''Series/ChappellesShow''; where he served as a writer and featured player on the show, alongside Donnell Rawlings and Creator/BillBurr. His most famous contribution to the show was his four-part skit "True Hollywood Stories", where he told ridiculous, but 100% true stories about his friendships with Music/RickJames and Music/{{Prince}}, the former of whom actually participated in his sketches. Although the show was abruptly cancelled after two seasons due to Chappelle [[CreatorBacklash eventually disowning the show]], both it and Charlie's sketches were critically acclaimed. Since then, Murphy carved out a decent niche for himself as a comedian and voice actor, appearing in ''WesternAnimation/TheBoondocks'', ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas'', ''Series/BlackJesus'', and even ''WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2012''.

Sadly died from a long battle with leukemia on April 12, 2017; coincidentally almost exactly a year after Prince passed away.
