* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Tony and Fury discuss the line-up of the Ultimates, and they mention the Fantastic Four. They had been introduced in ''ComicBook/UltimateMarvelTeamUp'', as basically the same team than in the mainstream comics. The team would be properly introduced again some time later, in ''ComicBook/UltimateFantasticFour'', now reimagined as teenagers and getting their powers ''after'' the formation of the Ultimates. This FF early appearance was rendered non-canon, so try to ignore that bit of dialogue.

[[caption-width-right:350:Bringing ComicBook/TheAvengers to the XXI century]]
->'''Kleiser:''' The world was about to go up and you were about to surrender in these few brief moments we have left. Let me hear you say it... "I surrender, Herr Kleiser. Make it quick"
->'''Captain America:''' Surrender? SURRENDER??!! You think this letter on my head stands for 'France'?

"The Ultimates" was a 2002 miniseries, written by Creator/MarkMillar, with arts of Bryan Hitch. Set in the ComicBook/UltimateMarvel universe, it was a reimagination of ComicBook/TheAvengers, renamed as "ComicBook/TheUltimates".

Once upon a time, during UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, the nazis received the help of an alien race, the Chitauri. They built a super rocket, that they would use to end the war. Captain America, the only super human ever created, died making it blow up in the sky. Then we jump to the XXI century. There is an increasing activity of superhumans, so Nick Fury started arranging a superhero team. He had Tony Stark and the Wasp, and Bruce Banner working in the supersoldier serum that created Captain america, and which is now lost. Pym makes a breakthrough of his own and gets the power to change into a giant (thus dubbed "Giant man"). Even more, Captain America is found frozen in the artic, and still alive! And yet, even having the actual Captain America around for study, Banner is still unable to replicate the super soldier serum. Feeling useless next to the others, he inject himself with a mixed dose of his old Hulk serum and Captain America's blood, and turns himself into Hulk. He wreaks havok across the city, until the Ultimates (joined by Thor) finally take him down.

Remember the Chitauri? They did not flee at the end of the war. They had regrouped, and started a big plan. The Ultimates located them to Micronesia, and drop in to blow up the place. However, it was a trap: the Chitauri had actually infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. But it was actually useless, as the main Chitauri fleet arrives and tells them that there is no time to purify earth because of cosmic reasons, so let's just blow it to kingdom come. This leads to an all-out battle between the Ultimates and the Chitauri. Thor teleports the bomb to another dimension, and Captain America and Hulk finally defeat Kleiser, the leader of the Chitauri band.

* ActionPrologue: The first issue takes place in World War II. Can there be more action than that?
* BattleInTheRain: The WWII battle takes place during heavy rain.
* BilingualBonus: The nazi soldiers speak in German, not English (except when they talk to Cap directly). When Captain America storms into the nazi base, one of the nazi generals shouts "mein gott! erschiesst es! erschiesst es doch endlich!" (german for "My God! Shoot it! Shoot it at last")
* CassandraTruth: Captain America did not explain Bucky where did the nazis got the "Flash Gordon tech". He merely said that there were more sides fighting in the war than it would be ever known.
* TheCavalryArrivesLate: Subverted. The allies get into the nazi base, but could not stop the rocket from being launched. But that doesn't mean they were defeated: Cap jumps to the rocket and manages to disarm it in mid air.
* CueTheSun: The cover of the first issue has some sun reflections.
* DistantPrologue: The first issue narrates the ultimate fate of Captain America during World War II. The next one continues in modern day, half a century afterwards.
* EvilIsPetty: Can you believe that ThoseWackyNazis shot down a plane filled with Camel cigarettes? Kowalski can't.
* FatalFamilyPhoto: Captain America checked her photo of Gail before jumping to destroy the nazi complex.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Captain America flew the plane into the building, to make an opening for the Allied troops.
* MrExposition: Kowalski explains the military stakes at the first issue, so we know (other than it being WWII) what is the fight about.
* RatedMForManly: Captain America performs several manly feats alongside the series.
* ShoutOut: Bucky, a mere soldier, could only describe the Chitauri rocket as "ComicStrip/FlashGordon tech".
* SomethingWeForgot: In the middle of action Kowalski starts asking where is that Captain America that Bucky talks so much about.
* SuicideAttack: Captain America manages to jump to the rocket and, with some explosives, destroy the internal guidance system, so that it goes off-course. He saves the United States, at the cost of his life (or so it seemed for everybody, including him).
* {{Understatement}}: Bucky explained that he used to protect Cap from bullies at school. Then we see him storming across some waves of nazi soldiers. "Lucky for us, he's kinda filled out a little since then".
* WeirdHistoricalWar: The US in World War II has the only superhuman in existence, Captain America. The nazis are helped out by an alien race, the Chitauri. It does not go into the ludicrous levels of the mainstream Marvel comics set in WWII, but it's still an example.
