[[caption-width-right:999:The reason you came, and [[ComicBook/SubMariner some weird fish-guy]] is here, too.]]

The Human Torch's first self-titled comic, which originally began life as the OldShame, Red Raven Comics, but was quickly retooled into something more marketable. The first issue (titled #2) features stories involving the titular Torch, Namor, the Fiery Mask, Mantor the Magician, the Golden Age Falcon, and Microman ([[NonIndicativeName who was just a little boy who never called himself that]]). This new version of the magazine was a success, and continued until 1954.

!!Tropes included in Human Torch and its short-lived predecessor, Red Raven Comics:

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Comes up in Jimmy Everett's story, titled "A Wish Come True". The wish in question was to become tiny, as Jimmy thought it'd be a fun time. It wasn't.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: The Torch is briefly brainwashed by Namor with some drugged food and sent to attack the surface world.
* TheButlerDidIt: Mantor's first foes are literally a malicious butler and gardener, trying to kill a young heiress for her family's fortune.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome:
** Even though his first story assured his that he would appear again in the next issue, Jimmy Everett never showed up again.
** Every single character from Red Raven Comics was absent from the new version. Even Mercury was repurposed as "Hurricane" when he next appeared in Captain America Comics.
* {{Crossover}}: Famously had one with ''ComicBook/MarvelMysteryComics'' in its fifth issue (the one where the Human Torch battles Namor). There were also many stories in the second issue that ended with characters or narration telling the reader "Go buy Marvel (Mystery) Comics!"
* FanNickname: The duplicate fifth issue is often labeled by re-sellers and online as "Human Torch 5a".
* HilariousInHindsight: Jimmy Everett muses that he'd like to be as small as an ant, and gets his wish after drinking a scientist's shrinking serum. [[ComicBook/AntMan Hmm...]]
* KidSidekick: Human Torch #2 featured the debut of Toro, the [[HaveAGayOldTime Flaming Kid]]!
* LadyMacbeth: Rathia serves this role for Namor in the second issue 5, convincing him he should TakeOverTheWorld.
* NamesTheSame:
** This Falcon has no relation to any future characters in Marvel with that name.
** Likewise, the Golden Age Ka-Zar should not be confused with the later Ka-Zar of the modern age.
** The Tubby from ''Tubby an' Tack'' is not the same Tubby from ''ComicBook/YoungAllies''.
** For some reason, this series had two issues labeled 5.
* OldShame: Marvel has a very low opinion of Red Raven Comics #1, and any retrospective you'll find about it labels as an unmitigated disaster that crashed and burned and they couldn't wait to get away from it.
* ScoobyDooHoax: Mantor is attacked by two ghosts in a mansion, who turn out to be the mansion's butler and its gardener in disguise.
* ShoutOut: Often did these to its sister publication, Marvel Mystery Comics. A train in Toro's debut story is even called the "Marvel Special".
* SpotlightStealingSquad: The Human Torch basically usurped this magazine away from Red Raven because Red Raven Comics sold ''that'' badly.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Mantor was the ''third'' attempt by Timely Comics to create a Mandrake-like hero of their own, after ''Daring Mystery Comics''' Monako and Red Raven Comics' Magar.
* ThoseWackyNazis: A recurring foe of any wartime comic, including this one.
* Tuckerization: The Human Torch and Namor's creators were respectively Carl Burgos and Bill Everett. Human Torch #2 introduces characters named Carl Burg''ess'' and Jimmy Everett (The Falcon and Microman, respectively).
* UnInstallment: There was no fourth issue of Human Torch, just two fifth issues. As for the first issue, it's just Red Raven Comics #1.

The Human Torch (no, [[ComicBook/HumanTorch not that one]]) was a character and ongoing anthology story created by Carl Burgos in 1939 for Timely Comics, which would become Creator/MarvelComics, anthology ComicBook/MarvelMysteryComics. He debuted in the first issue, and would go on to have his own comic series, cross over with ComicBook/NamorTheSubMariner and ComicBook/CaptainAmerica, and join ComicBook/TheAvengers. He is still appearing in comics in 2019.

This page can serve as both the character and the stories in ComicBook/MarvelMysteryComics.

!!The Human Torch provides examples of:

'''The character:'''

* EatingMachine
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Sometimes it's thought that he's a bad guy or even actually behind what he's trying to stop.
** {{Justified}} in that, not only is his power inherently destructive, but his first appearance in the world resulted in quite a lot of destruction, almost certainly the deaths of innocents, and definitely the deaths of criminals, and he killed his creator and has been known to act contrary to the police.
* KillItWithFire: The Torch does not especially shy away from killing his foes.
** ManOnFire
* LightningBruiser: He's the precursor to Johnny Storm, who's 6'3 and 300 lbs.
* NeverGivenAName: The Torch's creator never gave him a humanlike name, he was just "the Torch". He eventually, several stories in, takes the human alias Jim Hammond.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: The Torch is an android, but no one seems to know that who wasn't told.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers: In early installments, at least, the Torch is still using his power for ''good'', but that doesn't mean he has any problem committing wanton destruction of property, escaping (and destroying) jail, resisting the police, letting bad guys die... His mindset is that because he's ''right'' and going after the real bad guy, the actual law doesn't matter.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: He seems to do heroics for the sake of themselves, and tells grateful people not to mention it.
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters: In the first issue, The Torch desired to return to the scientist who created him, but turned his back on him and goes it alone once he realizes he just wanted to exploit him like the mobsters he just dealt with. [[AccidentalMurder And then apparently promptly and unapologetically attempted to kill him.]]

----

'''His powers:'''

* ElementalArmor: When flamed up, his fire is so hot that, sometimes, bullets melt before they can reach him.
* {{Flight}}
* InASingleBound: The Torch can't fly (at this point in time, not even Superman could fly), but he might as well. He leaps at times over small mountains.
* NighInvulnerability: Nothing really seems to harm him.
* PlayingWithFire: Control of fire is his primary ability. Not just that he can create and throw it, but fire appears to actively obey him. His most impressive feats include not just melting but ''sublimating'' sheets of steel.
** FingerSnapLighter: Lighting people's cigars is a common way for him to prove his identity or powers.
** {{Fireballs}}: He throws fire, with various body parts.
** RingOfFire: He traps people in rings of fire, usually from a distance.
** WreathedInFlames: His primary power is that he's on fire.
* SuperSpeed: He ran-slash-leapt a two day car journey in a day or less.
* SuperStrength: He can lift steel beams and catch hurtling boulders.

----

'''The comics:'''

* ArtisticLicensePhysics: He is a robot who spontaneously combusts when in the presence of oxygen. Until he learns about nitrogen and then doesn't. Also, flames apparently obey him. And he can carry fabric sometimes while he's on fire, while at other times he's melting steel.
* FunetikAksent: Many bad guys are written with phonetic "Joisey" accents.
* TheMafia: Many of his foes were generic mobsters -- supervillains hadn't been invented yet.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Even in stories where it starts with the Torch on the wrong side of the law, by the end he is usually forgiven and right all along.
** {{Enforced}}, more or less, by the era; it would be difficult to find comic books before the '70s where this isn't the case, unless they are presented as a villain. ComicBook/NamorTheSubMariner is an interesting aversion.

He debuted in the first issue, and would go on to have his own comic series and join ComicBook/TheAvengers.

----
!!The Human Torch provides examples of:

The character:

* BlankSlate - He begins his life knowing nothing.
* KillItWithFire - The Torch does not especially shy away from killing his foes.
** ManOnFire
* NeverGivenAName - The Torch's creator never gave him a humanlike name, he was just "the android". He eventually, several stories in, takes the human alias Jim Hamond.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot - The Torch is an android, but no one seems to know that who wasn't told.
* SkilledButNaive - In the first stories, at least, he was an incredibly powerful fiery force, but his lack of experience with the world let him be used by criminals.
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters: In the first issue, The Torch desired to return to the scientist who created him, but turned his back on him and goes it alone once he realizes he just wanted to exploit him like the mobsters he just dealt with. [[ And then apparently and unapologetically kills him.]]

His powers:

* ElementalArmor - When flamed up, his fire is so hot that, sometimes, bullets melt before they can reach him.
* InASingleBound - The Torch can't fly (at this point in time, not even Superman could fly), but he might as well. He leaps at times over small mountains.
* MadeOfIron - As an android, rather literally.
* PlayingWithFire - Control of fire is his primary ability. Not just that he can create and throw it, but fire appears to actively obey him.
** {{Fireballs}}
** WreathedInFlames
* SuperSpeed - He ran-slash-leapt a two day journey in about six hours.

The comics:

* AliensSpeakEnglish - There are Venusians at one point, but they look human and speak English.
* ArtisticLicensePhysics - He is a robot who spontaneously combusts when in the presence of oxygen. Until he learns about nitrogen and then doesn't. Also, flames apparently obey him.
* HumanAliens - The Venusians don't seem to physically differ from humans at all, except they keep their suits one, presumably for atmosphere.
* HumanPopsicle: The Torch's creator, once he discovered his defect that sets him ablaze, seals him inside a block of concrete with no air and buries him underground until he can find a way to fix his defect. Some time after, an air shaft and crack forms in the concrete, giving the torch just enough oxygen to trigger his fire abilities and break free.
* TheMafia - Many of his foes are generic mobsters. Supervillains hadn't been invented yet.
