This story saw the complete and utter demolishing of the Green Lantern Corps (it had been done previously after ''ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths'', but it didn't stick) and taking everything that was Hal Jordan's legacy with him as he was transformed into the villainous Parallax and saw it replaced with Kyle Rayner, who became [[LastOfHisKind last of the Green Lanterns]]. Guy Gardner, who had his own title at the time, was also affected as his own Green Lantern connections were severed and he was cast into the world of retcons. Hal Jordan would stay a villain, causing ''ComicBook/ZeroHour'' but performing a HeroicSacrifice in ''ComicBook/FinalNight'', bonding with ComicBook/TheSpectre and ultimately returning to life and restoring the Corps with ''ComicBook/GreenLanternRebirth''.

* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Hal's entire motivation once he starts towards Oa is to get enough power to undo the destruction of Coast City and all the deaths that Mongul caused. He's driven to change the past, and no one is going to stop him. Of course, once he actually gets the power he's looking for, he gets bigger ideas... ComicBook/ZeroHour.

During the third act of ''Reign of the Supermen'', Mongul and the Cyborg Superman eradicated Hal Jordan's hometown of Coast City. Hal, who was away in space at the time, would find the monstrous Engine City in its place, burst in, beat Mongul to a pulp and aid the returned Superman in shutting down the city and the Cyborg. But, it wasn't enough. Feeling empty, he used his Power Ring to recreate his hometown and everyone in it. The Guardians of the Universe, however, caught wind of this and sought to punish Hal for misusing his power. Going over the since that the Guardians couldn't even let him have a construction of his old life, Hal decided to seek out ultimate power and he would take the Green Lantern Corps with him.

After [[ComicBook/TheDeathOfSuperman the destruction of Coast City]], Hal Jordan is completely filled with despair. He uses his ring to recreate the whole city again, along with the people and his family. But his ring eventually runs out of power, everything fades, and he's alone in a giant crater once more. Even worse, one of the Guardians want to take him to Oa to punish him for using his ring for personal gain. Hal snaps, and absorbs the energy from the Guardian's projection with the intention of traveling to Oa to take the full power of the Central Battery.

Along the way, he encounters one Green Lantern after another, sent by the Guardians to stop him. None of them are able to do so, and as he defeats them he takes their rings, wearing them all to boost his power levels. When he reaches Oa, he finds that the Guardians have released Sinestro from his imprisonment in the Central Power Battery in order to stop him. Sinestro is unable to stop Hal either, and Hal kills him by snapping his neck. He then kills Kilowog, who tries to talk sense into him and physically prevent him from reaching the battery.

The Guardians rightly accuse Hal of abusing his power, but he doesn't care any more. He enters the Central Battery, absorbs all the power, and then destroys the battery, emerging as (the as-yet unnamed) Parallax.

While Hal was stealing the power from the battery, the Guardians sacrificed their lives to give Ganthet all of their power. He uses it to repair and charge a single Green Lantern ring. He goes to Earth and gives it to the first random dude he finds: Kyle Rayner, the new Green Lantern.

* ExecutiveMeddling: The reason this story exists. Sales were falling on the Green Lantern title in 1994, and editorial felt that writer Gerard Jones' original pitch for Emerald Twilight wasn't going to bring in new readers. So they ditched it and plotted out their own story, intended to replace Hal Jordan permanently with "the last of the Green Lanterns", Kyle Rayner.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: the original version of Emerald Twilight would have seen a second group of Guardians appear, with Hal Jordan having to determine which group was genuine, and the Green Lantern Corps split by the crisis. In the end Hal would have quit the Corps after being powered up, and he would have been replaced with a newer, younger character. Ads soliciting this version of Emerald Twilight were in fact published, showing how last minute the changes really were.

* TheGodsMustBeLazy: The almighty Guardians of the Universe, who just forty issues earlier had been capable of completely draining a Green Lantern ring of energy and of wielding the power of the planet Oa in order to maintain the Mosaic World composed of dozens of biospheres, are suddenly incapable of stopping Hal Jordan's rampage. He accuses them of being "impotent shams". While the Guardians prefer to let the Corps do the work of policing the universe, they've always been willing to act when a big enough threat appeared... until the story required them not to act, so the desired dramatic outcome could be reached.

After the destruction of Coast City, Hal Jordan is completely filled with despair. He uses his ring to recreate the whole city again, along with the people and his family. But his ring eventually runs out of power, everything faes, and he's alone in a giant crater once more. Even worse, one of the guardians want to take him to Oa to punish him for using his ring for personal gain. Hal absorbs the energy from the Guardian's projection, and heads to Oa, to get the full power of the Central Battery. He defeated and killed all the Guardians that got in his way, and collected their rings. The Guardians unleashed Sinestro to stop Hal Jordan, but he killed him as well. He got the full power, and became Parallax.

Ganthet, the last of the Guardians, summons up enough energy from his peers to create one last ring of power. He goes to Earth and gives it to the first random dude he finds: Kyle Rayner, the new Green Lantern.
