Deleted some of the Captain Airstrip One tropes - this is fanfic from a 1980s UK zine, not part of the Alan Moore arc

* AirstripOne: The Captain Britain Corps - a gathering of the counterparts of Captain Britain from every alternate version of Earth - includes a Captain Airstrip-One who seems to hail from a world very similar to Orwell's ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour''.

* AmbiguousSyntax: In one ''Captain Britain'' story featuring Captain Airstrip-One, an alternate Captain Britain who represents the Britain of ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour'', Captain Airstrip-One is told by his superior to "imagine a boot stomping on a face forever." Captain Airstrip-One, who has no will of his own, happily obliges, but misinterprets the order -- he thought he was meant to imagine that image forever, so he does, effectively making this mission his last.

* FinalSolution: In Creator/AlanMoore's run on ''Captain Britain'', [[RealityWarper Mad Jim Jaspers]] created the grotesque cybernetic creature The Fury and used him to [[HeroKiller murder every superhero on his Earth]], simply because he didn't want anyone living who possessed any kind of power to threaten him.

* GuardianOfTheMultiverse: The role is taken by Merlin (until he is killed by the effects of Mad Jim Jaspers's battle with the Fury) and Roma of Otherworld. Their appearances in the "main" Marvel books are limited mostly to those written by Creator/ChrisClaremont, who has never made any secret that he's a huge fan of the Creator/AlanMoore[=/=]Creator/AlanDavis run on ''Captain Britain'' that introduced them.

* LiteralGenie: In one of Creator/AlanMoore's ''Captain Britain'' comics, Captain Airstrip-One (who represents Ingsoc from ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour'') is told by his supervising officer to "imagine a boot stomping on ahead, forever." Captain Airstrip-One then imagines a boot stomping on ahead -- and doesn't stop. He ''said'' forever...

Deleted tropes specific to A Crooked World and already covered on that page - Adaptive Ability, A Rare Sentence, The Juggernaut etc

* AdaptiveAbility: The Fury. When Linda [=McQuillan=] dreams about the last stand of the heroes of her world, the Fury is repeatedly described as doing things that should be impossible (including killing ComicBook/{{Miracleman}}). Somehow it found a way.

* ARareSentence: Lampshaded by Captain Britain in a classic Alan Moore/Alan Davis sequence. "What do you take me for? Of course I know what I'm getting into. I'm in a parallel universe fighting an alternate version of myself alongside a group of parahuman mercenaries who want me to help the wrongly accused Majestrix of... [{{Beat}}] Do you ever get halfway through a sentence and find yourself unable to believe that you're actually saying it?"

* BiggerOnTheInside: Mad Jim Jaspers had a teapot-shaped helicopter that was bigger on the inside. (It was probably due to his [[RealityWarper reality warping]] powers, but he was also a technological genius.)

* ChessMotifs: During ''ComicBook/ACrookedWorld'', Merlin and his daughter Roma play an intricate game of chess, seemingly manipulating events while Captain Britain and his allies fight against [[ImplacableMan The Fury]] and [[RealityWarper Mad Jim Jaspers]].

* CosmicChessGame: In the Creator/AlanMoore penned issues of ''Captain Britain'', Merlin and Roma are literally playing chess with the main characters: they have a chessboard with pieces that look like the characters, and the fate of Captain Britain's universe is at stake in the game. At one point a killer robot shoots CB with a laser beam or something, and Merlin tries to protect him in a rather literal way by putting his hands around the CB chess piece, which saves CB but gets Merlin's hands burned. The game returns in ''Comicbook/{{Excalibur}}'' v1, even being used as the basis for the cover of issue #47.

* ExtradimensionalEmergencyExit: Early in the ''Captain Britain'' story arc ''ComicBook/ACrookedWorld'', the Captain and Saturnyne find themselves witnessing the alternate Earth on the receiving end of [[RealityIsOutToLunch an apocalyptic breakdown of reality]] courtesy of [[BigBad Mad Jim Jaspers]]. Realizing that all her work on uplifting the world has been for nothing, Saturnyne decides to cut her losses by teleporting herself and her staff into a safe dimension -- [[FairWeatherFriend leaving Captain Britain behind to face the music]].

* HeroKiller: The Fury is one of the most frightening examples in {{comic books}}. He has singlehanded murdered all the [[SuperHero superhumans]] of an [[AlternateUniverse alternate Earth]]. The only survivors were the Captain Britain of that reality, and only because she [[DirtyCoward fled to our world to save her life]], and the Fury's creator, who had the good sense to program its creation so that it could not harm him. [[spoiler:However, when the Fury meets its creator's counterpart in our world, it concludes that nothing in its programming forbids killing HIM]].

* TheJuggernaut: The Fury, a cyborg created to [[HeroKiller kill]] all the [[SuperHero superheroes]] of an {{alternate universe}}, takes this trope {{up to eleven}}. Once it has set its eyes upon a target, he chases him until it kills him. He just never gives up. Never.
* KangarooCourt: When Brian is summoned to Saturnyne's trial (she has been accused of ''not'' destroying the dimension of Earth-238, allowing its instability to contaminate other dimensions), he finds out that Lord Mandragon is simultaneously the judge, prosecutor, ''and'' Saturnyne's successor to the imperial throne if she's convicted. This is, of course, totally insane, and Brian's not the only one to point it out, but the trial goes forward anyway.

* MadOracle: In ''Captain Britain'', the precognitive Cobweb ends up like this when the Fury arrives in the 616 universe and [[RealityWarper Mad Jim Jaspers]] starts taking over the world.

* MechanicalMonster: The Fury, though it does have some biological parts. James Jaspers of Earth-238 only made one, because one was all he needed.

* NightmareOfNormality: In the final confrontation of the ''Captain Britain'' plot arc "ComicBook/ACrookedWorld", the eponymous hero faces off against reality-warping prime minister [[ChaoticEvil Mad Jim Jaspers]]. Though at first Captain Britain seems confident in his ability to go on fighting, Jaspers unleashes his powers on him -- and next thing he knows, Brian Braddock is waking up from a coma with no sign of his powers, briefly indicating that his adventures were just delusions. This lasts only for a page before Jaspers wakes him up again; apparently, he did this just to demonstrate how meaningless the good Captain's powers are in the face of a RealityWarper.

* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: Captain Britain foe the Fury was killed by [[spoiler:Captain UK]]. This wouldn't be a good example compared to the rest if it wasn't [[TheJuggernaut Fury]], the same being who killed all of its Universe's superheroes, survived the destruction of the said Universe and get toe-to-toe with one of the most powerful {{Reality Warper}}s in the history [[spoiler:and won]]. And yet, [[spoiler:the UnstoppableRage of one woman]] was enough to teach it the meaning of death and defeat.
* OhCrap: If someone encounters The Fury and actually survives, this is pretty much their automatic reaction the next time they see it.
* OhMyGods: ''Captain Britain'': When [[RealityWarper Mad Jim Jaspers]] fought a destructive battle with [[TheJuggernaut The Fury]], Saturnyne's only reaction is "Mithras wept!"

* PerpetuallyProtean: Downplayed in ''Captain Britain: ComicBook/ACrookedWorld.'' When [[CloudCuckooLander Mad Jim Jaspers]] finally unveils himself as the RealityWarper behind the ongoing apocalypse, his ''hat'' keeps changing to fit his mood -- and given how demented Jaspers is, [[MoodSwinger he ends up wearing something new on every single panel]]. Later played straight in the case of his ''main'' universe counterpart -- who in one scene shapeshifts from a giant-sized version of himself, his ordinary size, TheGrimReaper, the Devil, a stereotypical SadistTeacher and a farmer driving a combine harvester.

* PresidentEvil: In ''Captain Britain'', Mad Jim Jaspers is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom... and also a RealityWarper whose powers drive him completely insane. He becomes a supervillain in two different {{Alternate Universe}}s and leads campaigns to wipe out the world's metahuman population so he can play with the world undisturbed.

* RealityIsOutToLunch: In Captain Britain, the [[RealityWarper reality-warping]] Mad Jim Jaspers' brief but nightmarish rule over Britain resulted in this; had the Fury not stopped him, it would have spread not only to the rest of the world, but to the entire multiverse.

* SelfFulfillingProphecy: Comedic variant from ''Captain Britain'':
-->'''Zeitgeist''': You didn't warn us because I was ''going'' to insult you? You mean I hadn't even insulted you at that point? You just predicted I was ''going'' to and didn't warn... Cobweb, you are the most thoroughly irrational squack-head I have ever set eyes upon.
-->'''Cobweb''': There! I ''knew'' you were going to say that!
* ShapeShifterShowdown: A particularly dark chapter of ''Captain Britain'' climaxes with a duel between villains Mad Jim Jaspers and the Fury: since Jaspers has the power to [[RealityWarper alter reality at will]] and the Fury is a robot that can [[AdaptiveAbility adapt to virtually any situation]], it's pretty extreme to say the least. In the end [[spoiler:the Fury wins by shifting into a dimension where matter and reality don't exist, leaving Jaspers completely defenceless.]]

* SuicideDare: In Creator/AlanMoore's series, the sentient computer Mastermind once used holographic illusions of the Captain's dead parents who almost successfully urged him to kill himself out of guilt at their deaths.

* YourWorstMemory: In the ''Captain Britain: ComicBook/ACrookedWorld'', Linda [=McQuillan=] (AKA Captain UK) is revealed to have escaped [[RealityWarper Mad Jim Jaspers]]' anti-superhero pogrom and is now living an ordinary life in our dimension. However, she's soon stricken by [[PastExperienceNightmare horrific nightmares]] of her worst memory from the world she escaped: the day her husband died at the hands of [[MechanicalAbomination the Fury]] while getting her to safety. The horror is compounded when she discovers that Jaspers' counterpart in ''this'' dimension has just been elected [[PresidentEvil Prime Minister]]... and then the Fury finds her again. Suffice it to say, this was a plot arc that spent a lot of time hammering Linda's TraumaButton.

* TeamDad: Brian served as this for Excalibur, after he stopped drinking, and even before, being particularly protective of the teenagers, Kitty and Rachel, two stand-out incidents involving the latter and two versions of Nigel Frobisher.
** In the first issue, 616!Frobisher was hitting on Rachel, pulling out the classic creepy response to being told to go away, "yours lip are saying that, darling, but -" and Brian immediately looms up behind him and stonily says, "So are mine. Go away."
** The second was during the ''Cross-Time Caper'' when Rachel had responded to the disgustingly creepy thoughts of the local version of Nigel Frobisher (who was apparently a multiversal creep) by telekinetically transmuting his clothes to tar and feathers with a large sign saying 'Pig!' stuck to his chest. Brian initially reprimanded her for acting out when they were guests in that world... then Rachel showed him just what that version of Frobisher was thinking. It isn't shown what exactly that was, but Brian had a shocked expression on his face, and in the very next panel it took the entire team to stop Brian from tearing alt!Frobisher limb from limb.

!!In General

* ActionDad: Brian has a daughter with Meggan as of ''X-Men Gold Annual'' named Maggie, who is also BrainyBaby as she's able to speak when she's just a few days old.

* AirstripOne: The Captain Britain Corps - a gathering of the counterparts of Captain Britain from every alternate version of Earth - includes a Captain Airstrip-One who seems to hail from a world very similar to Orwell's ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour''.
* TheAlcoholic: Brian is one for much of the early series of ''{{ComicBook/Excalibur}}'' - while he drank a fair bit before, the apparent death of his sister Betsy, along with the X-Men, led to him falling down the bottle in a big way - which leads him into several poor decisions. He eventually gets sober, though Kitty's apparent death during the ''Cross Time Caper'' almost causes him to fall back down it again.

* AlternateHistoryWank: The Captain Britain Corps has a member (Centurion Britannus from Earth-4100) in which '''the Roman Empire''' never fragmented. Separately, it also has a world where '''the Nazis''' won WWII, with Kaptain Briton.
* AmericaIsStillAColony: The Captain Britain Corps has at least two members (Crusader X from Earth 2122 and Captain Colonies ([[Comicbook/CaptainAmerica Steve Rogers]]) from Earth 4103) of realities in which America is still a colony.

* AntiHeroSubstitute: By choosing Sword of Might rather than the Amulet of Right, Kelsey is proven to be more ruthless in battle than her predecessor. [[spoiler:Brian also does this after his enslavement at the hands of Morgan le Fay, and promptly gives up the Sword to Betsy, as he can't bear the thought of what that choice makes him and emphatically does not want to be pitted against his sister]].

* BigBrotherInstinct: Brian for his sister, Betsy (Psylocke). When she briefly replaced him as Captain Britain for the first time, she's injured by Slaymaster and Brian has to rescue her.
** To a slightly lesser extent, he also applies this to Kitty and Rachel in ''Excalibur'', being decidedly protective of both of them. While Rachel can generally look after herself, being the most powerful member of the team (though she sometimes gets hit with the SquishyWizard problem), as early as the first issue he ominously looms over the eternally creepy Nigel Frobisher and tells him in no uncertain terms to leave her alone or suffer. As for Kitty, her apparent death in the ''Cross Time Caper'' leads to him nearly falling back down the bottle again, and being deeply depressed for a long time afterwards.
* BigBrotherMentor: Spider-Man served as this when Brian was just starting as Captain Britain and was studying in New York, to the point where Spidey actually arranged superhero lessons for him. While Spider-Man was about the same age as Brian, he was a good deal more experienced (Spidey got his powers at 15, while Brian was a researcher and graduate student, albeit an unusually young one, when he got his), and Brian held him in high esteem - and, separately, Peter Parker, who he was rooming with (no, he never worked it out), because Peter was the first one to confront him about his drinking problem and not let him just brush it off with his brains or money.

to:

* TheChosenMany: The Captain Britain is part of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps.
Corps in the ''Comicbook/{{Excalibur}}'' series, where each different Britain in the Marvel multiverse has one to defend the country. Most of them are different versions of Brian Braddock, but this isn't always the case. Since there's one for almost every reality, not every Captain Britain is Caucasian, male, or even good for that matter. There have been at least two Nazis in the role, since they technically represent the ideals of their Britain. Also Captain Granbretan and Captain Angleterre, who come from Britain's that had been conquered by Napoleon. More esoteric Captains Britain have included [[Literature/NineteenEightyFour Captain Airstrip-One]], [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs Britanicus Rex]], [[UsefulNotes/TheRomanEmpire Centurion Britannus]], [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica Captain Colonies]], [[Comicbook/SpiderMan Spider-UK]], and at least two Skrulls. Oh, and Captain UsefulNotes/{{Wales}}.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: ClingyCostume: One alternate-universe version of Captain Britain named [[http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix2/captaingranbretan.htm Captain Granbretan]] got his powers from a magical costume that allowed him to serve as a superhero for a while. The problem is, Captain Granbretan eventually wants to ''stop'' being a superhero... and the costume, which turns out to be a sentient organism, decides it [[AndIMustScream isn't going to let him]].
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman:

* ExpandedStatesOfAmerica: In ''Paper Empire'', a quasi-official (Creator/AlanMoore approved it, and Marvel later confirmed its version of Captain Empire's real name) ''Captain Britain'' fan comic, Captain Empire's home reality of Earth-741 has a United American Republics, which seems to include at ''least'' the USA and unspecified chunks of South America (but not Canada, which is still part of the British Empire).

* {{Expy}}: Brian was originally an Expy of Captain America, although his personal situation in the original ''Captain Britain Weekly'' series was closer to Spider-Man. This was {{deconstructed}} in ''Captain Britain and MI-13'' where Captain Britain says how much he admires Captain America and how he would like to be a patriotic symbol just like Captain America, but there are a lot of things in the way. Later, he is resurrected by Merlin, who knits together a multitude of Union Jacks into a human body - making the Captain, like the flag he wears and the country he represents, a single being made of multiple parts; "One Thing That Contains Many".

* FormFittingWardrobe: Both of their costumes. Brian's costume is emphasized in ''VideoGame/MarvelAvengersAlliance'' which features a rather [[FemaleGaze noticeable]] bulge where one would expect a man wearing a skin-tight outfit to have.
* GainingTheWillToKill: Captain Britain (aka Brian Braddock) was a fairly straightforward example of TheCape... until the day his nemesis, Slaymaster, fought Brian's sister [[ComicBook/{{Psylocke}} Betsy]] and beat her to within an inch of her life before ripping out her eyes. Slaymaster's last words -- spoken as Brian Braddock stood over him, holding a large rock -- were: "Fool! [[TemptingFate You have not the strength to kill...]]"
* GeniusBruiser: Not often shown (and he unhappily lampshades how it had fallen by the wayside in ''{{ComicBook/Excalibur}}'' in favour of leading with his fists), but Brian has a doctorate in physics and he is as happy in a lab as on a battlefield.
* TheGoodCaptain: Usually Brian if he leads a team, like Excalibur.
* TheGoodKing: Brian becomes King of the United Kingdom in the ''ComicBook/HouseOfM'' reality.

* HalfHumanHybrid: Brian, since his father is an Otherworlder. Betsy is this even more so than Brian, as the human side is {{Mutant}} for added measure.
* HappilyMarried: Brian is married to his MagicalGirlfriend, the shapeshifting {{mutant}} Meggan. Sadly averted with Kelsey whose marriage ended in divorce.
* TheHero: Brian's role in ''Excalibur'', ''New Excalibur'', and ''Captain Britain and MI-13''.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Once she's resurrected, received the powers of Captain Britain, and returned to Earth, Kelsey avenged her own previous 'death' by impaling Thunderball with her Sword of Might.
* IneffectualLoner: Justified for Brian; for about half of ''Excalibur'' there was a spell on him to screw him up if he took independent action.

* LadyOfAdventure: The writers tend to forget this, but Captain Britain and his sister Comicbook/{{Psylocke}} are members of a [[{{Fiction500}} fabulously wealthy family.]] While Captain Britain sometimes resents his calling, Psylocke fits this to a 'T', even after her {{Stripperiffic}} ninja makeover.
* TheLancer: Brian's role in ''Secret Avengers'' vol. 1, shared with ComicBook/AntMan, ComicBook/BlackWidow, and ComicBook/MoonKnight.

* MagicFeather: Captain Britain used a costume and staff which he believed was the source of his powers, but merely focused his innate powers (his daddy was from AnotherDimension, so powers kinda [[SuperPowerfulGenetics run in the family]]). Later, he was able to do without.

* MistakenIdentity: Object example. Kelsey referred to the Sword of Might as Excalibur. The ''real'' Excalibur itself ends up being held by [[Captain BritainAndMI13 another British superhero, Faiza Hussain]].* MostCommonSuperpower: Kelsey's bust is emphasized in her costume.
* MushroomSamba: When Captain Britain encounters Doctor Crocodile, Crocodile douses him with a gas that makes him see surreal hallucinations of Africa, Crocodile's own history, and the monstrous crimes of [[spoiler:Jamie Braddock]].
* {{Mutant}}: In some alternate realities and/or adaptations, Brian is a mutant, just like his sister.

* OutOfCharacterMoment: Brian in ''Uncanny X-Force'' vol. 1, in a massive way. From wanting to wipe someone from existence (though granted, he had a reason for that) to completely forgiving his slave-trading older brother, you have to wonder if the writer knows the character is one of the good guys. However, he did soften a bit towards the end of that arc.

* RapeAsBackstory: Kelsey. Back when she was married, she was sexually assaulted by thugs who invaded her home. The incident caused her to divorce her husband (as he was too paralyzed with fear to help her) and take sole custody of their two children.

* RulingCouple: Brian and his wife Meggan are King and Queen of the United Kingdom in ''House of M'' reality.

* ShouldersOfDoom: Kelsey wears a small and practical variant on her right shoulder.
* SmoochOfVictory: In ''Captain Britain and MI-13'', Brian gets not only one, but two with his long-lost wife Meggan. Once when he thinks he's rescued her from Plokta, and once when he actually has rescued both of them from Lilith.

* SuperiorSuccessor: For as powerful as Brian is, Betsy is ''even more'', because she's a mutant who maintains her (very potent) abilities on top of gaining the vast powers of Captain Britain.

* SwordOverHead: Subverted in Jamie Delano's run on ''Captain Britain''. After sister Betsy replaces Brian Braddock as Captain Britain, Brian's old foe Slaymaster takes her on and beats her savagely before putting both of her eyes out. An appalled Brian arrives, and a titanic fight ensues, which ends with Slaymaster on his back and Brian holding a huge rock over his head. At the last moment, he seems to force himself to stop. Slaymaster, being a villain, can't stop himself from coming out with an I-Don't-Think-You've-Got-The-Grapes taunting speech. In a flash of fury, Brian sweeps the rock down on Slaymaster's head. SPLAT.

* TheChosenMany: Captain Britain is part of the Captain Britain Corps in the ''Comicbook/{{Excalibur}}'' series, where each different Britain in the Marvel multiverse has one to defend the country. Oh, and Captain UsefulNotes/{{Wales}}.

to:

of the original weapons of Brian's incarnation of Captain Britain Corps in the ''Comicbook/{{Excalibur}}'' series, where each different Britain in the Marvel multiverse has one to defend the country. Most of them are different versions of Britain.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch:

* MistakenIdentity: Object example. Kelsey referred to the Sword of Might as Excalibur. The ''real'' Excalibur itself ends up being held by [[Captain BritainAndMI13 another British superhero, Faiza Hussain]].
* MostCommonSuperpower: Kelsey's bust is emphasized in her costume.
* RapeAsBackstory: Kelsey. Back when she was married, she was sexually assaulted by thugs who invaded her home. The incident caused her to divorce her husband (as he was too paralyzed with fear to help her) and take sole custody of their two children.
* ShouldersOfDoom: Kelsey wears a small and practical variant on her right shoulder.
* SirSwearsALot: Downplayed with Kelsey. While her son Martin affectionately says he likes it when she swears in front of him because it helps him growing up, she only swears a few times, especially under stressful conditions after becoming Captain Britain. Not to mention her personality is also hardened since she chose the Sword of Might.
* TookALevelInBadass: Kelsey was mostly UnskilledButStrong when she got her powers, which is understandable since she was never a fighter before. She's a better fighter after Albion trained her.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Kelsey did this on her bed after she, as Captain Britain, finished checking up her mother and children in Avengers Mansion without revealing her secret to them.

\n\n\n[[/folder]]\n\n[[folder:Brian Braddock (Earth-616)]]\n!!Brian Braddock\n* ActionDad: Brian has a daughter with Meggan as of ''X-Men Gold Annual'' named Maggie, who is also BrainyBaby as she's able to speak when she's just a few days old.
* TheAlcoholic: Brian is one for much of
WonderWomanWannabe: ComicBook/{{Psylocke}} in ''ComicBook/Excalibur2019'', after taking the early series mantle of ''{{ComicBook/Excalibur}}'' - while he drank a fair bit before, the apparent death of his sister Betsy, along with the X-Men, led to him falling down the bottle in a big way - which leads him into several poor decisions. He eventually gets sober, though Kitty's apparent death during the ''Cross Time Caper'' almost causes him to fall back down it again.
* AnimalMotifs: Brian's original red costume featured a golden lion emblem on his chest.
* ARareSentence: Lampshaded by
Captain Britain in she changes costume from her ninja leotard to an armoured getup which like Wonder Woman has a classic Alan Moore/Alan Davis sequence. "What do you take me for? Of course I know what I'm getting into. I'm in segmented skirt with a parallel crotch flap and instead of Psionic Sai Betsy wields the [[KnightlySwordAndShield starlight sword and a Psionic Shield]] as well making her very similar to Wonder Woman.
* UnexplainedRecovery: The ''ComicBook/UltimateMarvel''
universe fighting an alternate version of myself alongside a group of parahuman mercenaries who want me to help the wrongly accused Majestrix of... [{{Beat}}] Do you ever get halfway through a sentence and find yourself unable to believe that you're actually saying it?"
* BigBrotherMentor: Spider-Man served as this when
Brian was just starting as Captain Britain supposedly killed in an explosion during ''Comicbook/{{Ultimatum}}'', and was studying in New York, to the point where Spidey actually arranged superhero lessons for him.
* {{Expy}}: Brian was originally an Expy of Captain America, although his personal situation
even listed in the original ''Captain Britain Weekly'' series was closer to Spider-Man.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Brian, since his father is an Otherworlder.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: When Brian came to America on a study abroad program, he ended up rooming with Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man
"In Memorium" section at Empire State University (who chucked him out because of his drinking and told him to get a hold of himself and take some responsibility - which, in fairness, he did, until he fell down the bottle after Betsy's apparent death - and he looks back on it as a landmark incident). Also, Brian with Nightcrawler in ''Excalibur'' and Pete Wisdom in later years.
* IneffectualLoner: Justified for Brian; for about half of ''Excalibur'' there was a spell on him to screw him up if he took independent action.
* TheLancer: Brian's role in ''Secret Avengers'' vol. 1, shared with ComicBook/AntMan, ComicBook/BlackWidow, and ComicBook/MoonKnight.
* MagicFeather: Captain Britain used a costume and staff which he believed was the source of his powers, but merely focused his innate powers (his daddy was from AnotherDimension, so powers kinda [[SuperPowerfulGenetics run in the family]]). Later, he was able to do without.
* MindRape: Brian is on the receiving end of this in ''Uncanny X-Force'' vol. 1 by his sister, Psylocke, when he's reluctant to kill their older brother, Jamie.
* MrFanservice: Brian, hence why [[VillainessesWantHeroes a villainess like Sat-Yr-9 wants]] him. And she [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale raped]] him, ''twice'', as mentioned above.
* MushroomSamba: When Captain Britain encounters Doctor Crocodile, Crocodile douses him with a gas that makes him see surreal hallucinations of Africa, Crocodile's own history, and the monstrous crimes of [[spoiler:Jamie Braddock]].
However, he did soften a bit towards
the end of that arc.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: When
the ComicBook/RedSkull invaded Britain, Captain Britain rose to the occasion... But much of the page space went to ComicBook/NickFury and ComicBook/CaptainAmerica, who had also followed the Skull over the Atlantic.
* PsychoactivePowers: Brian's powers in ''Captain Britain and MI-13'' are depicted as working like this, as they had in the early parts of ''Excalibur''; super strength and durability in proportion to his confidence and emotional stability.
* SmoochOfVictory: In ''Captain Britain and MI-13'', Brian gets not only one, but two with his long-lost wife Meggan. Once when he thinks he's rescued her from Plokta, and once when he actually has rescued both of them from Lilith.
* StiffUpperLip: Brian in Creator/PaulCornell's ''Captain BritainAndMI13'', such as when Britain is [[ComicBook/SecretInvasion invaded by Skrulls]]:
-->'''Skrull''': You think that is bravery? Tiny things! Within the Skrull Empire you will know grandeur. You will know pride and determination and... \\
'''Captain Britain''': I think you'll find we know already. We just don't like to make a fuss.
SPLAT.
Brian initially reprimanded her for acting out when they were guests in that world... then Rachel
series. He showed him just what that version up in a later issue of Frobisher was thinking. It isn't shown what exactly that was, but Brian had a shocked expression on his face, and in the very next panel it took the entire team to stop Brian from tearing alt!Frobisher limb from limb.
* TelescopingStaff: A telescoping staff was one of the original weapons of Brian's incarnation of Captain Britain.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Brian in ''Deadpool Team-Up'', after a culture-swap machine gave him and ComicBook/{{Deadpool}} (a Canadian) each other's nationality.
* WillfullyWeak: Captain Britain learned all about this while teaming up
''ComicBook/TheUltimates'' with Spider-Man. Half-canine criminals don't deserve a max-power punch in the snout (Doggy-girl survived, her bills paid by the Cap).

* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Kelsey is a secondary antagonist in ''New Excalibur'' as TheDragon for Albion, an alternate reality counterpart of Brian, who had a dispute with Brian and many other members of the Captain Britain Corps at the time, and [[UnholyMatrimony whom Kelsey appears to be in relationship with]]. Kelsey eventually learned the error of her ways and helped Excalibur to defeat Albion and Shadow-X (an evil team of the original five ComicBook/XMen and Charles Xavier from an alternate reality who were brainwashed by Shadow King).

* HalfHumanHybrid: Betsy and Brian's father was an Otherworlder. Betsy is this even more so than Brian, as the human side is {{Mutant}} for added measure.

to:

* HalfHumanHybrid: Betsy ClingyCostume: One alternate-universe version of Captain Britain named [[http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix2/captaingranbretan.htm Captain Granbretan]] got his powers from a magical costume that allowed him to serve as a superhero for a while. The problem is, Captain Granbretan eventually wants to ''stop'' being a superhero... and Brian's father was an Otherworlder. Betsy is this even more so than Brian, as the human side costume, which turns out to be a sentient organism, decides it [[AndIMustScream isn't going to let him]].
* ExpandedStatesOfAmerica: In ''Paper Empire'', a quasi-official (Creator/AlanMoore approved it, and Marvel later confirmed its version of Captain Empire's real name) ''Captain Britain'' fan comic, Captain Empire's home reality of Earth-741 has a United American Republics, which seems to include at ''least'' the USA and unspecified chunks of South America (but not Canada, which
is {{Mutant}} for added measure.still part of the British Empire).
* TheGoodKing: Brian becomes King of the United Kingdom in the ''ComicBook/HouseOfM'' reality.

* AlternateHistoryWank: The Captain Britain Corps has a member (Centurion Britannus from Earth-4100) in which '''the Roman Empire''' never fragmented. Separately, it also has a world where '''the Nazis''' won WWII, with Kaptain Briton.
* AmericaIsStillAColony: The Captain Britain Corps has at least two members (Crusader X from Earth 2122 and Captain Colonies ([[Comicbook/CaptainAmerica Steve Rogers]]) from Earth 4103) of realities in which America is still a colony.

* AttendingYourOwnFuneral: Kelsey attended her own funeral to maintain her secret identity as Captain Britain.

* FashionableAsymmetry: Kelsey's shoulder armour is only on her right shoulder as pictured above.

* HalfHumanHybrid: Brian, since his father is an Otherworlder. Betsy is also this as well, but the human side is {{Mutant}} for added measure.

* TheLancer: Brian's role in ''Secret Avengers'' vol. 1, shared with ComicBook/AntMan, ComicBook/BlackWidow, and ComicBook/MoonKnight.

* HeterosexualLifePartners: When Brian came to America on a study abroad program, he ended up rooming with Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man at Empire State University (who chucked him out because of his drinking and told him to get a hold of himself and take some responsibility - which, in fairness, he did, until he fell down the bottle after Betsy's apparent death - and he looks back on it as a landmark incident). Also, Brian with Nightcrawler in ''Excalibur'' and Pete Wisdom in later years.

Captain Airstrip-One then imagines a boot stomping on ahead -- and doesn't stop. He ''said'' forever...

* MagicFeather: Captain Britain used a costume and staff which he believed was the source of his powers, but merely focused his innate powers (his daddy was from AnotherDimension, so powers kinda [[SuperPowerfulGenetics run in the family]]). Later, he was able to do without.
* MagicalBarefooter: In ''Captain Britain'', Brian Braddock's wife Meggan, a [[HalfHumanHybrid half]]-[[TheFairFolk fairy]] [[TheEmpath empathic]] [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshifter]] never wears shoes, likely a trait inherited from the fairy side of her family.

* MindRape: Brian is on the receiving end of this in ''Uncanny X-Force'' vol. 1 by his sister, Psylocke, when he's reluctant to kill their older brother, Jamie.

* OvershadowedByAwesome: When the ComicBook/RedSkull invaded Britain, Captain Britain rose to the occasion...

SPLAT.

* TamerAndChaster: Betsy's Captain Britain outfit is this as her entire costume is armour and usual spandex.
* TelescopingStaff: A telescoping staff was one of the original weapons of Captain Britain.

* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Brian in ''Deadpool Team-Up'', after a culture-swap machine gave him and ComicBook/{{Deadpool}} (a Canadian) each other's nationality.

** Kelsey was mostly UnskilledButStrong when she got her powers, which is understandable since she was never a fighter before. She's a better fighter after Albion trained her.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Kelsey did this on her bed after she, as Captain Britain, finished checking up her mother and children in Avengers Mansion without revealing her secret to them.

* UnexplainedRecovery: In ''ComicBook/UltimateMarvel'' universe, Brian was supposedly killed in an explosion during ''Comicbook/{{Ultimatum}}'', and was even listed in the "In Memorium" section at the end of the series. He showed up in a later issue of ''ComicBook/TheUltimates'' with no mention of his "death", though he was now shown to be dying of cancer caused by his [[ClothesMakeTheSuperman supersuit]].
* UnholyMatrimony: Briefly, Kelsey with Albion in ''New Excalibur'', although it doesn't last.
