They were also determined to assassinate Alexander II (five attempts, last of them successful). The problem is that Alexander II was almost a revolutionary himself. He abolished serfdom and allowed peasants to buy property, tried to mitigate the tensions in conquered territories (such as former Poland) and was fascinated by American democracy and Abraham Lincoln in particular. He thought of gradual (to avoid grand upheaval) introduction of democratic government. His assassination ruined this vision. Alexander III returned to absolutism, and his son (lacking the skill of his ancestors) was toppled by communists who quickly introduced one of the most inhumane totalitarian regime in the human history. And that's pretty much Templar agenda.
