* ThePowerOfHate: Baou Zakeruga's true power was only unlocked through Zatch's seething hatred towards [[spoiler: Riou, for killing Kiyo.]] Said event also grants Zatch seven new spells and ''immensely'' powers up his existing spells. Also [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed big time.]] While Baou's true power was unlocked by Zatch's hate, it also begins to consume him and threatens his life. Indeed, this is why [[spoiler: King Bell gave it to Zatch in the first place. His usage of Baou in the previous war turned it angry and monstrous. Zeno, who was born with the King's former rage, would be ''destroyed'' by the spell and gave it to the more kind-hearted Zatch.]] Baou feeds on hate and consumes spells born from it. Zatch ends up ''purifying'' Baou and having it rediscover its power to end hate in the first place. This is shown when it defeats Zeno's ultimate spell, which was born from his and Dufort's hatred, by consuming it and thus taking away their hate.

A 5 year old Mamodo and his partner that used their power to take over a castle in England and demand tribute from the local townspeople, keeping any would-be heroes at bay with their fearsome army of "Immortal Knights" and several hostages, which included both Kory's parents and Kiyo's father. After their battle with Zatch and Kiyo starts going south they decide to make a quick escape and flee while the castle crumbles to the ground around them. Luck isn't on their side however, as Zeno was waiting to prevent them from making a clean getaway and burns their book with a single spell.

A 5 year old giant Mamodo and his partner who are encountered by Zatch and Kiyo during their trip to England. The duo are found harassing a young girl named Djem and her partner Yopopo in the hopes of finding and burning their spellbook, even going so far as to attack Djem's family when she doesn't hand over the book to them. After an intense battle between them and a combined team of Zatch, Kiyo, Yopopo and Djem they successfully manage to burn Yopopo's spellbook as intended but are eliminate from the battle themselves immediately afterwards from a combo attack between Zatch and Yopopo.

A male Mamodo whose standard form is a massive blue beast resembling a cross between a wolf and a bear. Formerly cruel with a bad reputation in his home village for rampaging, he changed his mindset after befriending Zatch when the latter saved his life and showed unflinching strength in the face of his threats, and now holds a very gentle side. He sought to help his partner Kyle overcome his timidity.

* BadassNormal: Effectively, since Kyle was too scared to cast spells Rein had to beat any challengers barehanded.
* GentleGiant: He looks pretty terrifying, but he's just as kind and gentle as Zatch.
* HeelFaceTurn: In his backstory. He was originally a violent, rampaging demon who was feared and hated. Once, he severely injured himself, and despite his threats, Zatch brought him back from the brink of death. Afterward, Rein reformed.
* MadeOfIron: Having to fight without spells, Rein has no real defense against other demon's spells besides enduring them.
* OptOut: Rein actually has no desire to become Demon King, and even if he did, his partner Kyle is horribly cowardly and even in the final 30 or so still has no will to actually do battle. So Rein sends Zatch a letter asking him to burn his book. His only reason for sticking around is to help Kyle gain a semblance of a backbone.
* TooPowerfulToLive: He's so incredibly powerful that he's sent back to the Mamodo world by the end of his first appearance so he doesn't trivialize much of the remaining conflict.

As a descendant of a line of peacekeepers, he dedicates himself to the greater good regardless of personal sacrifice.

* KnightInShiningArmor: His appearance is a spot-on match and Earth comes from a clan that upholds the demon world's laws. While in the human world, he makes a point of investigating what he believes to be threats to either world, such as Baou and Faudo.
* KnightTemplar: He's so committed to protecting the world from Faudo and Baou that he's blind to the fact that Baou's wielder is entirely benevolent and no threat to him or anyone else. When he meets up with Zatch trying to stop Faudo from rampaging, Earth realizes his mistake and the two join forces.

* ArchEnemy: To Zaruchimu. Alishie hates him for securing his cooperation by threatening one of the children from his village. Meanwhile, Zaruchimu deeply resents Alishie for physically overpowering and humiliating him during their fight.
* BadassNormal: Aleshie can fight a demon in hand-to-hand combat with reasonable success.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Alishie has spent most of his life carrying the water that his family needs to survive across a five mile hike, entirely by himself. Thanks to that, he's tough enough to fight toe-to-toe with a demon, spells and all.
* DeathSeeker: Aleshie, though only briefly, so that his power could not be used to unseal Faudo.

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Karudio has more spells and a better control over his powers than Ponygon does when they first meet. He and Sauza have also been together for longer, and thus have a more finely-tuned bond than Kafk and Ponygon. The latter narrowly avoid a defeat by running away, and never actually manage to defeat the former.
* EnemyMine: During the Faudo Arc he shows up just to have another shot at burning Ponygon's book. He joins forces with Zatch's group purely out of a desire to protect Elly, who reminds him of his little sister.
* HarmlessFreezing: Surprisingly, a subversion. Karudio's final spell produces such sheer cold that it's even dangerous for himself.
* HeroicSacrifice: He uses a spell that will freeze even himself to death to stop Faudo's heart demon. Sauza burns the book before he can expire.
* AnIcePerson: Karudio has ice powers, in contrast to Ponygon's fire.
* TheUnintelligible: Much like Ponygon, Karudio can only be understood by his partner and another horse tribe mamodo like Ponygon himself.

A male dragon Mamodo and one of the four prodigies (arguably the strongest), he resembles an adult in his growth. A proud but kind demon who dreamed of harmony among all the different kinds of demons, he was one of the last demons standing in the battle and befriended Zatch after testing his strength. One of the first demons to face Clear Note, he dedicated himself to stopping the evil demon’s plans.

* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Ashuron loses his wings to one of Clear's spells, severs an arm to increase his speed for his final attack, and said attack rips off his legs and remaining arm.]]

* UnderestimatingBadassery: Ashuron writes Brago off immediately after he's attacked by Clear. Brago survives, though it was a close call, and Ashuron expresses he's impressed by his tenacity.

* WeHardlyKnewYe: Ashuron is built up as the BigGood of the final arc. Sent back about a quarter of the way into it.

A 67-year-old retired American surgeon and a great magician and trickster. He fell into a death-like depression when he failed a surgery on his own grandson. Kido revitalized him, and he came to develop a limited version of the Answer Talker ability. He was responsible for amassing forces to combat the Ancient Demons.

After losing Kido to the Belgim E.O., he continued to monitor demon threats and assist Gash and Kiyomaro wherever it was possible.

* BigGood: He's the one who gathers the book users and demons to fight Zofis and the one that calls the shots. Downplayed in the Faudo arc when he plays a role in gathering allies and information, but cannot directly participate in the conflict due to no longer having a demon partner.
* CatchPhrase: "Kidding!" or in Japanese, "It's a lie!"
* CoolOldGuy: That he can keep up with all of the craziness going on around him is astonishing. His age does catch up with him every once and a while, though.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Nearly fatally, the fact that Belgim E.O. can stand up out of his chair takes Dr. Riddles completely by surprise.
* TheGadfly: Many times, when Kido explains something Dr. Riddles had explained earlier, Dr. Riddles will just exclaim his CatchPhrase.
* HeroicBSOD: When Kido finds him, the doctor is sitting in a mansion, surrounded by shelves of books and doing nothing with his knowledge. Then we find out why: [[spoiler: he failed to save his grandson during his surgery.]]
* IOweYouMyLife: When Kido showed up, Dr. Riddles was just sitting at home waiting to die. He credits Kido with saving his life by dragging him out and giving him something else to live for.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's an incorrigible troll, and delights in insulting Kiyo even as he's gathering heroic demons to face the BigBad. Kiyo is left wanting to both strangle him and thank him.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: It's implied here and there that he may have the Answer Talker ability, especially since a couple of close-ups show he has the telltale eye circles, but nothing has been confirmed. Would explain how he knows a lot though.
* MyGreatestFailure: The reason he was sitting around doing nothing? He used to be a surgeon. Then he failed to save a child, and the guilt drove him into seclusion. In the original, the child's also his grandson.
* ReplacementGoldfish: After the reveal of his backstory, some of Riddles' thoughts suggest he sees Kido as his grandson as well.
* TeamDad: For the team, he somewhat subverts this. He is the oldest among them and acts as their mentor, but behaves more like an annoying older brother than a paternal figure.
* TricksterMentor: Incorrigible troll though he is, he's still very smart and heavily implied to be at least a little bit psychic. He did help Kiyomaro understand the nature of the spellbook and teach him a new spell in the process when they sparred. And when he sparred with Tia and Megumi, they learned ''two'' new spells.
* {{Troll}}: He's always winding Kiyo up. He also likes to annoy Kiyo by bringing Lady Susan (Big Boing in Japanese) around. When she starts performing a song about her breasts for Kiyo in his house, the professor is seen trying to stifle a laugh.

A male adolescent Mamodo resembling a cross between a human and a beetle, more towards the former. He valued nothing more than strength and sought to fight strong opponents to relieve his constant anger; though he overpowered Zatch in the battle, the young king’s ferocious willpower made Bari unable to deal the finishing blow. He later found tranquility and learned the true meaning of strength by defeating the dragon prodigy Elzador. Neither a friend nor an enemy to Gash, defined as someone strong enough even to strike the king.

His partner is a wise Finnish man who acts as a strict father to Bari. He helps Bari with his fights, giving little regard to collateral, but scolds him for doing things without reason.

* BystanderSyndrome: He flat out refuses to participate in the fight against Zofis due to being more concerned with settling his rivalry with Zatch. By the time of the Faudo arc, he's matured out of it and is more than willing to help.
* CoolOldGuy: Gustav is this, trying to temper his partner into a better path.
* CoveredInScars: After his battle with Elzador, Bari is littered with scars all over. He even lost one of his horns.
* DeathGlare: His 'strong eyes' that drive Keith up the wall

* DeusExitMachina: Bari is by far one of the most powerful characters in the series; among other things, he deals Zatch his first unambiguous defeat, defeats a dragon Mamodo who is explicitly stated to be one of the favorites to win the entire competition, beats Keith senseless despite the latter undergoing ''three'' OneWingedAngel transformations, and is, in fact, the single character in the entire series to never lose a fight. It's even insinuated very strongly that he is capable of defeating [[BigBad Zeno]], [[CoDragons Rodeaux, and Jedun]] singlehandedly, [[spoiler: so of course, right before the heroes confront the trio, Bari acts selflessly for the first time in the series by sacrificing himself to get the party through one of Faudo's deathtraps, completing his CharacterDevelopment and paving the way for Zatch to take on Zeno himself]].

He sought to help his partner Kyle overcome his timidity.

* BadassNormal: Effectively, since Kyle was too scared to cast spells Rein had to beat any challengers barehanded.
* GentleGiant: He looks pretty terrifying, but he's just as kind and gentle as Zatch.
* HeelFaceTurn: In his backstory. He was originally a violent, rampaging demon who was feared and hated. Once, he severely injured himself, and despite his threats, Zatch brought him back from the brink of death. Afterward, Rein reformed.
* MadeOfIron: Having to fight without spells, Rein has no real defense against other demon's spells besides enduring them.
* OptOut: Rein actually has no desire to become Demon King, and even if he did, his partner Kyle is horribly cowardly and even in the final 30 or so still has no will to actually do battle. So Rein sends Zatch a letter asking him to burn his book. His only reason for sticking around is to help Kyle gain a semblance of a backbone.
* TooPowerfulToLive: He's so incredibly powerful that he's sent back to the Mamodo world by the end of his first appearance so he doesn't trivialize much of the remaining conflict.

As a descendant of a line of peacekeepers, he dedicates himself to the greater good regardless of personal sacrifice.

Spell Specialization: Swords

His partner Elly, a 7-year-old Finnish girl diagnosed with a terminal illness, she initially declined to be Earth’s partner out of nihilism. She saw purpose in her life after saving Earth from Gani Fest, and stood alongside him from then on. At Earth’s request, their relationship became like that of master and servant with her as the master.

* AntagonistAbilities: He has the ability to drain people's energy through his sword and somehow this skill seems less effective when he's fighting alongside the heroes than it was being used against them.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Elly would rather die from Riou's curse than allow Faudo to be awakened since Faudo will destroy the world and kill her anyway.
* {{BFS}}: His spells all make use of his sword. Some get quite large.
* DespairEventHorizon: Almost. [[spoiler: Upon realizing that Clear may well be the one who will become the king, Earth bursts into tears and begins screaming about how he doesn't want to die.]]
* IaijutsuPractitioner: The ''Jerudo Ma Sorudo'' spell is a powerful Iai attack that can be held back and released instantly when the enemy gets within range.
* KnightInShiningArmor: His appearance is a spot-on match and Earth comes from a clan that upholds the demon world's laws. While in the human world, he makes a point of investigating what he believes to be threats to either world, such as Baou and Faudo.
* KnightTemplar: He's so committed to protecting the world from Faudo and Baou that he's blind to the fact that Baou's wielder is entirely benevolent and no threat to him or anyone else. When he meets up with Zatch trying to stop Faudo from rampaging, Earth realizes his mistake and the two join forces.

* SpottingTheThread: Earth claims to be going for a walk, but Elly notices he's bringing the book with him and concludes an enemy is nearby.

His partner is a stubborn, belligerent, and short-tempered Mongolian boy with a protective instinct for girls younger than him, stemming from having a younger sister. He tamed Karudio with an effort and spent many months working to perfect their teamwork.

Spell Specialization: Ice Armor

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Karudio has more spells and a better control over his powers than Ponygon does when they first meet. He and Sauza have also been together for longer, and thus have a more finely-tuned bond than Kafk and Ponygon. The latter narrowly avoid a defeat by running away, and never actually manage to defeat the former.
* AnIcePerson: Karudio has ice powers, in contrast to Ponygon's fire.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Sauza sees his little sister in Elly; they are unable to team up properly until he stops trying to protect her.
* EnemyMine: During the Faudo Arc he shows up just to have another shot at burning Ponygon's book. He joins forces with Zatch's group purely out of a desire to protect Elly, who reminds him of his little sister.

He possesses the natural ability to manipulate others’ hearts, and began the battle by turning his partner Koko from selfless and kind to as malicious and ruthless as he. He revived the Ancient Mamodos and brought them under his control in an attempt to become king. Though an imperial sort who would prefer leaving the fighting to others, his ability to fly, genius intellect, and Explosion-based spells make him no pushover if he must dirty his own hands.

* ArcVillain: Of the Ancient Mamodo arc.
* ArchEnemy: To Sherry and Brago. Sherry absolutely despises Zofis for manipulating Koko and refuses to allow anyone else to take him out. And, despite his attempt to kill Sherry when they first met, Zofis actively avoids a confrontation with them, because Brago absolutely terrifies him.
* BadBoss: All of his minions, and even Koko, are just tools for him to become king.
* BigEater: Like all Mamodo, but in Zofis' case, he prefers huge feasts fit for a king, which mirrors his personality and ambitions. Also, unlike other Mamodo such as Zatch or Brago, Zofis doesn't scarf down his meals [[JabbaTableManners like an animal]]. Quite the opposite, as shown in ep.69.

* DirtyCoward: Hides behind his army of Thousand-Year-Old mamodo, who he keeps in line with the empty threat of returning to stone. When Brago finally confronts him, he spends most of the battle running away, and when he's finally taken down, he's a teary mess.
* EvilSorcerer: Unlike most Mamodo, Zofis has powers that go far beyond his book spells. He can manipulate minds and hearts through hypnosis, extract memories with remarkable precision, and fly unaided.

* SmugSnake: He actually is incredibly powerful and can do things such as fly, teleport, and mentally dominate others without the use of his book. But when faced with someone he knows is his equal or superior, he isn't as smug.

Spell Specialization: Lightning

* AdaptationalVillainy: In the manga, Zeon does start out rather dickish but as the battle goes on we start to see he does have a noble side and that his actions were purely driven by jealously [[spoiler: which he eventually overcomes once he sees Zatch's past]]. In the anime, no such development exists, he's evil through and through and has nothing but contempt for Zatch to the bitter end, even when he's beaten. This was because the author had broken his hand as he was in the midst of the story arc and the anime rapidly caught up before he could do the battle between Zatch and Zeno. So the animation staff just had to go with anything and just ran with what they had.
* AllEncompassingMantle: Zeno's clothes are theoretically exactly the same as Zatch's (albeit a different color), but his always seems to be billowing ominously while Zatch's generally just hangs down loosely like a dress.
* ArchEnemy: To Zatch. He's responsible for Zatch's amnesia and his burning hatred of Zatch is his motivation for most of the tournament.
* BigBad: For the last half of the Faudo arc, and for most of the series seeing as he's the one who removed Zatch's memories.
* BloodKnight: Zeno is very ruthless and it was something he inherited from his father. [[spoiler: This reason is exactly why King Bell gave Bao to Zatch. Bao consumed so much darkness, the spell became dangerous and Zeno, possessing his father's wrath, would've been consumed by it. * DiabolusExNihilo: Clear gets not a single mention prior to the arc where he's front and center, and promptly shows up to wreak havoc, establishing himself as the strongest demon in the series yet and the final antagonist, with the ultimate goal of erasing all demons from existence - himself included. None of the other demons seem to know anything about him, and no mention is made of his past or reason for being outside of that he is "the power to destroy". Little is said about Vino either, the talking human infant that is his bookmaster.
* DemBones: The ''Bādorerugo'' spell conjures a giant, white, winged doll, which looks like a dragon skeleton.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: He claims his existence and intentions to be the natural result of Mamodo evolution.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: He's an extremist nihilist whose goals are the destruction of the human and Mamodo worlds and then suicide. He's also [[DiabolusExNihilo never so much as mentioned prior to his arc]].
* GooGooGodlike: Vino, who has a large amount of heart power. We can guess this is probably why Clear chose him to be his bookkeeper.
* InvincibleVillain: His first appearance; he hands Brago his first and only [[spoiler:non-friendly]] defeat, destroys the full-power Baou Zakeruga, and nobody but Ashuron is able to lay so much as a finger on him (Brago pitched in at one critical moment, but only because Vino was out of energy). Interestingly enough, the fights with his various powered-up forms are much more even thanks to the heroes also getting much stronger.
* KillingIntent: His murderous intent manifests as a malevolent, demonic aura. It is so potent, he was able to scare both Brago and Sherry.
* LackOfEmpathy: Using Answer Talker, Dufaux in the Gash Cafe identifies Clear as someone who was born without the concept of love, utterly incapable of understanding it now or in the future. Clear only grasps through secondhand knowledge that the reason people don't destroy things is because they love them - Clear himself feels zero qualms about eradicating all demons because he can't comprehend shared positive emotions with anyone else besides himself.
* LightIsNotGood: Pure white, and pure evil.
* NoSell: The ''Supurifo'' spell family, as mentioned above. Unlike other defensive spells, they don't stop attacks as much as they directly cancel their effects or make them disappear.
* MeaningfulName: The name "Clear Note" can refer to his spellbook being a clear note(book), reflecting his complete lack of humanity and empathy, as well as the clarity of his intent, which is free of emotional attachment. "Clear" can also refer to "nuclear" as in nuclear weapons, which he compares himself to. His most powerful spell appropriately has his name in it, being called Shin Kuria(Clear) Seunousu.

His cool, quiet, and laid-back to the point of fault demeanor hides a malicious core that thrives on abuse and wickedness to become stronger. His partner is a middle-aged man who went mad with power when he discovered Reycom's abilities, using him to do whatever he wanted while treating him as no more than a tool. He never learned, nor did Reycom tell him, of the demon battle and what he was.

Spell Specialization: Ice

* AdaptationDeviation: In the manga, Hosokawa learns about Zatch when he and Kiyo foil some bank robbers. In the anime adaptation, he ''is'' the bank robber.
* AnIcePerson: Reycom's basic spell, Gikor, shoots massive icicles out of his mouth. His second spell, Freezudo, freezes things in ice.
* EvilCounterpart: To Zatch and Kiyo's early relationship with each other. Kiyo tends to think of Zatch as an annoyance, but still tries to look out for him. Hosokawa thinks Reycom's the best thing that ever happened to him, but still treats him like dirt. And while Zatch is working to make Kiyo a better person, Reycom encourages Hosokawa's descent into villainy to make himself more powerful. On a related note, Reycom's book is blue to Zatch's red.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Hosokawa has ''no idea'' what Mamodo are, or of the contest to become king. He didn't even know there were other kids like Reycom until he reads about Zatch in the newspaper -- or when he and Kiyo thwart his bank robbery in the anime -- and then tries to take Zatch and his spellbook, not knowing [[OnlyTheChosenMayWield only the chosen partner can use it.]] This despite the fact that he's been working with Reycom for a while now, who ought to know all this. Apparently, [[YouDidntAsk Reycom just never bothered to tell him anything.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: Almost literally. Reycom's book is burned because Hosokawa sought out Zatch to steal his book and use him as well, something Reycom knows is impossible but apparently never mentioned.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: They only appear for a few chapters in the manga, around two episodes in the anime, and are never seen again after Reycom's book is burned (except for a cameo from Reycom in one of the last chapters). However, their actions establish a great deal of the mamodo fight and how it works. Kiyo and Zatch had no idea there were more kids like Zatch until confronted by Hosokawa and Reycom in the manga, and it's through fighting them that they learn spellbooks only work for one person, and the mamodo disappears when their book is burned. The fight also marks the first use of the second spell, Rashield, and when Zatch realizes that the magic is coming from him, as before he thought it was Kiyo's tricks and strategies.
* StarterVillain: They only know two spells, freely admit they're only using each other, don't work together at all and are unrelated to any future characters or story arcs. Heck, they're the only team that attacks Zatch for reasons ''other'' than to burn his book and become king. But they are the first team Zatch and Kiyo defeat on their path to make Zatch king -- even if, at this point, they don't know it yet.
* UngratefulBastard: Hosokawa was a poor delivery man who hated his job before meeting Reycom, and used the demon to better himself and take revenge on people he didn't like. Despite that, he sees Reycom as nothing but a tool. When Kiyo furiously points out that Hosokawa is wearing a nice suit while Reycom looks like he just crawled out of a dumpster, Hosokawa just laughs.

His partner is a laid-back playboy who was content to skateboard the day away. He yearned for power to stand up for himself, but was lacking in courage even after he met Hyde. As other demons faced them, however, he slowly built up the strength to stand alongside his partner. The ending of their story is unknown.

Spell Specialization: Wind

* BlowYouAway: Hyde's spells are wind-based. Jikir is a strong gust of wind, and Jikirga is a concentrated wind blast.
* CanonImmigrant: Started off as anime-only filler characters with barely two appearances, but apparently were memorable enough that the author ended up including Hyde as one of the Mamodo who helps Zatch in the FinalBattle, thereby confirming that he and presumably Eido were part of the battle to become king.
* CoolBoard: Eido likes riding his skateboard while using Hyde's wind spells to fly, though Hyde says it just makes him look like a poser.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Eido kidnaps Zach and Kiyo's friends to force a confrontation with the pair. Unfortunately, he forgot to tell them ''where to go'' in the note he sent. His own captives berate him for how stupid that was.
* FillerVillain: What they started off as, and probably a big reason why they were never seen again shortly after their second appearance. Makoto Raiku would later stealthily include Hyde [[CanonImmigrant in the manga]], albeit only as a cameo in the last few chapters.
* FriendlessBackground: Eido.
* MinorMajorCharacter: They are the first villains in the anime and one of the few teams which Zatch and Kiyo could not defeat, and also get an interesting bit of CharacterDevelopment in their second and last episode, all of which appeared to set them as important {{Foil}}s to the protagonists in the future. However, after a mere cameo in one of Megumi's concerts, they never appear again in the series.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: They disappear after their second anime-only appearance. As they aren't present at the King Festival, it's clear that they were defeated and their book burned at some point, but how or by who remains unknown. Later, Hyde appears at the end of the manga, assisting Zatch with his final attack on Clear Note and later at school in the Mamodo world.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Given Gofure starts trembling and whining when Renji arrived and stopped after a spell was cast, it's likely he also had a forced personality change like Kolulu. The ''Gash Cafe'' special contradicts this, suggesting that Gofure has a somewhat sadistic personality even when not transformed.
* DishingOutDirt: Gofure specializes in using rocks as armor and weapons.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Renji has a few small scars on his face, which adds to his thuggish appearence and cruelty.

His Partner was Haru, a young adult man who helped train him and came up with the strategy they used in their battle with Kiyo and Zatch. He is last seen fleeing the gardens after his book is destroyed.

Spell Specialization: Plants

* CombatTentacles: Sugino's first spell lets him control tree roots that can be used to entagle or strike at his foes.
* GreenThumb: Sugino's spells allow him to manipulate plant roots or summon a giant flower that fires projectiles at his enemies.
* PlantPerson: Sugino appears to be one. He can sense others through plants, has a leaf growing out of the top of his head and can use tree roots and flowers to attack people.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: Haru quickly discovers that he can only use a certain number of Sugino's spells per day. He assumes this is because spells have a hard limit on how many times they can be cast, not realizing that he's simply drawing from a finite pool of his own emotional energy that he can expand with time.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Fish, shiitake mushrooms and mandarin for Sugino.

Afterwards, Fein's book is burnt while he is still restrained by Zatch and Kiyo's newest spell.

Spell Specialization: Wind

* BlowYouAway: Fein can manipulate and control wind as his primary form of attack.
* FragileSpeedster: Fein has a powerful spell that lets him move so fast he at first appears to be teleporting when he uses it. The tradeoff is that because his body is so weak and tiny he ends up getting effortlessly pinned down by heavy metal debris when hit by a single Jikerdor spell, ending the battle in his defeat.
* VillainousHarlequin: Fein looks like a tiny clown with his outfit and facial design.

Unfortunately for Eshros his manipuation of Shin causes the latter to soon realize just what a vile and cruel kid he truly is, promising to burn his own book himself to prevent him from hurting anyone else.

Spell Specialization: Earth

* DishingOutDirt: All of Eshros spells are earth based.
* GentleGiant: Shin, who is kind to a fault. Sadly, this makes him easy for Eshros to manipulate... at least at first.
* {{Gonk}}: Shin has a rough appearance that led to him being bullied as a child. He's even initially assumed to be the Mamodo of his pairing.
* ManipulativeBastard: Eshros uses Shin's dead mother to motivate him to do his bidding, telling him that she'd be disappointed if he didn't do what he said. This comes back to bite him on the ass when Shin gets tired of putting up with his crap.

* SmugSnake: Eshros boasts that he's an elite Mamodo who can't be beaten. He does have a lot of spells and even some powerful ones, but he's truly nothing special in the overall context of the series.
* UnskilledButStrong: Despite having a pretty weak bond overall they nearly manage to beat Zatch and Kiyo due to sheer raw power thanks to Eshros large number of offensive spells. (For some reason, he has nearly ''a dozen'' avalible at a stage where most other teams only have four or five at the most.)
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Fish and fried chicken for Eshros.
* WeakWilled: Shin. He would never stand up for himself in the past despite his mother urging him to and Eshros' manipulations involve leading him to believe that using the book in battle would be him asserting himself, while following Eshros' instructions, naturally.

A male 10 year old Mamodo who was a close friend of Tia's back in the Mamodo world but quickly turned against her during their first encounter in the human world. Knowing that she hadn't yet found her human partner and was completely defenseless he attacked her and tried to elimate her from the battle to become king right then and there. Luckily, Tia survived his betrayal and soon partnered up with her friend Megumi and later Kiyo and and Zatch to finish the fight against him once and for all. After an intense battle with the two newly allied teams he got his book burnt with one final Zaker attack that sent him back to the Mamodo world for good. His partner was a middle aged man in a white suit named Rembrant.

Spell Specialization: Metal

* BerserkButton: Is FURIOUS when Zatch is able to surpass him.
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: He turns on Tia because, as the contest can only have one winner, every other Mamodo is his enemy. Though only one Mamodo can win, cooperation is vital to gaining an edge and every major player in the battle, even the strongest Mamodo, have at least one or two allies. In fact, the structure of the contest pairing every Mamodo with a human partner suggests that the eventual king being able to team up and collaberate with others was part of the point of the battle.
* ExtraOreDinary: His spells allowed him to summon powerful metal weapons like spiked metal balls or even a giant drill.
* FalseFriend: Tia considered him to be one of her closest friends while the two were still in the Mamodo world. It isn't long before he shows his true colors though, with a nearly successful attack that leaves her wounded and with severe trust issues. Shocked and deeply hurt by his betrayal, she takes a while to fully recover from the physical and emotional pain he inflicted on her.
* KickTheDog: He announces that after defeating Tia, he'll attack and ruin Megumi's concert purely to spite Tia.
* TheSocialDarwinist: A firm believer in this, which is why he betrayed Tia. It's also why he's angry when Zatch is able to beat him, since it basically deconstructs his whole philosophy
* ThisIsADrill: His ace spell Gigano Garanzu summons a massive spinning drill to attack the opponent with.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Maruss likes fish, korokke, and tulips.
* UnskilledButStrong: His spells tend to lack subtlety and utility but make up for it with sheer raw power.
* VillainousBreakdown: Becomes increasingly enraged as Zatch (who he used to bully) not only holds his own, but dominates him during the fight.

A male 6 year old Mamodo and his partner who lure Zatch and Kiyo to a giant inductrial freezer by kidnapping Suzy and holding her hostage. It turns out to have been all a clever trap to force Kiyo and Zatch to fight them at a severe disadvantage due to the cold and allow Robnos to make full use of his laser beam and duplication abilities. After temporarily disabling one of the Robnos twins with a Jikerdor spell the two then fuse into their ultimate form for the final stretch of the battle. Seemingly outmatched and outginned against such a powerful opponet a bit of quick thinking from Kiyo saves the day and Robnos is sent packing back to the Mamodo world. As for Suzy... she was never captured by the duo to begin with, just out sick.

Spell Specialization: Lasers

* CoolHelmet: It's actually a huge factor in his defeat. Kiyo was able to correctly guess that his attacks required him to build up power in his helmet before firing and used a metal pole to turn him into a giant lightning rod.
* EyeBeams: Robnos' most basic spell is a simple laser beam fired from his eye. Unfortunately, the location of the battle allows him to reflect it off of multiple surfaces to hit his target, making for a surprisingly dangerous basic attack.
* FusionDance: There are actually two seperate Robnos at the beginning of the battle that combine their attacks to hit Kiyo and Zatch whenever they try to dodge one of their laser beams. After the second one is captured by Jikerdor, Ruku uses a spell that lets them combine into a single more powerful entity.
* NoSell: Subverted. He pretends this happened with Zatch's Zaker spell, but Kiyo realizes that wouldn't have prevented his clothes from being burnt and figures out that he switched himself with another, unburnt copy.
* ThirdEye: His fused form has three eyes which allows him to fire three laser attacks at once.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Robnos prefers fish, menma and piroshki.

A 5 year old Mamodo and his partner that used their power to take over a castle in England and demand tribute from the local townspeople, keeping any would-be heroes at bay with their fearsome army of "Immortal Knights" and several hostages, which included both Kory's parents and Kiyo's father. After their battle with Zatch and Kiyo starts going south they decide to make a quick escape and flee while the castle crumbles to the ground around them. Luck isn't on their side however, as Zeno was waiting to prevent them from making a clean getaway and burns their book with a single spell.

Spell Specialization: Manipulation
