This is a list of characters for the Sochi Grand Prix original anime series ''Anime/YuriOnIce'', and all of is represented in the following major competitions, decides to move back to his hometown to figure out what he wants to do with his life. His life suddenly changes when his childhood idol, Victor Nikiforov, follows him to Japan and offers to become his coach.subpages. Beware of spoilers.

* {{Adorkable}}: He's anxious and insecure, but he's still one of the most-- if not ''the'' most adorable character in the entire series.
* AmbiguousDisorder: It's strongly implied that he has some kind of anxiety disorder, which doesn't help his already low self-esteem.
* AmbiguousSituation: In-universe, people are always wondering what kind of relationship he and Victor actually have. Though, [[spoiler: after the events of Episode 10, their situation was made pretty clear to the rest of the finalists, Yuri's ballet teacher and sister, ''and'' a crowd of restaurant patrons when Victor declared that they're engaged]].
* AnimalMotif: Pigs are a recurring theme with him -- he has [[WeightWoe trouble managing his weight]], his TrademarkFavoriteFood is pork cutlet bowls, Victor occasionally calls him a piglet, and Yurio's insult of choice for him seems to be “pig”.
* AscendedFanboy: After looking up to Victor all his life, the man himself comes and offers to be his coach. [[spoiler: Soon enough, they enter in a romantic relationship, and get ''engaged'' in Episode 10]].
* BadassBisexual: Don't let him tell you otherwise, he's a world-class skater who qualified for the Grand Prix Finals two years in a row and the Japanese media considers him the country's ace. He also just happens to be bisexual, and [[spoiler: is currently engaged to his idol-turned-coach, Victor]].
* BiTheWay: He had a crush on his female ChildhoodFriend and former rink-mate Yuko (who ended up marrying their mutual friend Takeshi Nishigori and having triplets), but the series really focuses on the sexual tension and the development of his relationship with his coach and [[spoiler: eventual-fiancé]], Victor Nikiforov.
* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:With Victor, in Episode 7.]]
* BlindWithoutEm: Downplayed; he seems to be able to skate just fine without his glasses, but in Episode 6 he has to squint to see his scores on the leaderboard at the China Cup.
* BreakTheCutie: His comfort-eating after his dog's death by and large ruined his chances for placing at the Grand Prix Finals. Combined with a poor track record at previous competitions, his five-year-long career became a list of failures that ended unceremoniously with him terminating his contract with his coach, Celestino Cialdini, and going back to his hometown to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. You can imagine exactly how much all of this contributed to the depression and extremely low self-esteem we see at the beginning of the series.
* CantHoldHisLiquor: Downplayed. It took ''sixteen'' flutes of champagne to get him to [[spoiler: challenge Yurio to a dance-off, tango with Victor, and pole-dance with Christophe at the Sochi Grand Prix Banquet]]. Only problem is, he can't remember any of it.
* CelebrityCrush: His admiration for Victor is treated like one, though he does grow out of it as he and Victor become closer, and [[spoiler:eventually become a couple]].
* CharacterDevelopment: He gradually becomes more confident and self-assured after Victor enters his life, and even manages to land a spot in the Grand Prix Finals in Episode 9 despite Victor's absence.
* CovertPervert: Michele accuses him of being this. One may think it's because of Sara's warm reaction to him, but it may also be that [[spoiler: Michele was there to see Yuri's drunken antics at the previous year's Grand Prix banquet]].
* {{Determinator}}: He learns to be one over the course of the series, despite his "glass heart" reputation. Once he finds something he's willing to fight for [[spoiler:(namely, Victor)]], he'll take on hostile audiences, anxiety attacks, angry young Russian skaters and personal crises on top of his already demanding training regimen.
* DissonantSerenity: In probably the creepiest scene in the show, when Victor [[spoiler: [[CryCute bursts into tears]] after Yuri proclaims he's retiring during the Grand Prix Finals]], Yuri's reaction is to calmly reach out and pull back Victor's hair so he can watch him [[spoiler: cry more closely]], and basically say with with little tone or inflection, [[spoiler: [[LackOfEmpathy "I'm surprised to see you cry."]]]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Quite a few other male characters show some form of attraction to him, with Victor being the most prominent[[spoiler: -- an attraction Yuri eventually comes to reciprocate]]. There's also [[LovableSexManiac Christophe]] and [[FanOfTheUnderdog Minami]]. Even his friend Takeshi, who's ''married'', admits that he can be sexy. There has been hints that [[spoiler:Yurio]] is also interested in him in some way.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: He learned how to skate at a young age, and he participated in Juniors with Chris at least ten years ago.
* {{Fanboy}}: To Victor, whom he's admired since he was young. The walls of his room are covered with posters and photos of Victor (before he takes them down so Victor can't see them) and he even got a poodle because Victor himself has one, [[WeNamedTheMonkeyJack and then named the dog after him]].
* FatalFlaw:
** Although he's a skilled ice skater, he can't handle pressure or get himself back together after a loss.
** He has a lot of insidious secondary flaws that appear to all originate from his anxiety and tendency to [[HeroicSelfDeprecation devalue himself]]: self-centeredness, [[InnocentlyInsensitive callousness]], a [[LackOfEmpathy lack of empathy]], [[MasterOfTheMixedMessage unstable/erratic moods and unwillingness to communicate]], etc. Combined with Victor's emotional detachment and [[StepfordSmiler tendency to hide his feelings]], this leads to some very rocky moments for their relationship throughout the show.
* {{Foil}}: To his Russian counterpart, Yuri(o) Plisetsky, obviously. You can contrast the two down to their body types -– Yuri is a naturally diffident person whose self-confidence issues and broodiness keep him from performing at his technical best; Yurio is brash, belligerent, and cocky about his own abilities on the ice. Yuri is a skater in the twilight of his career contending with a less-than-stellar track record and competitors who don't necessarily view him as a threat; Yurio is an up-and-coming athlete entering the prime of his career who's already considered a formidable presence in the skating world based on the strength of his performance as a junior alone. Yuri is prone to comfort-eating and easy weight-gain, and has to make a concerted effort to keep the pounds off for the season; Yurio is lithe and slender, but is aware that it's likely he'll lose his thinness and androgyny by the time he hits his twenties. The list goes on and on.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: With [[spoiler: Victor]], because he was insanely drunk at the time.
* FormerlyFit: Played with in the first episode; he's still quite capable on an ice, but his gap-year between losing the Grand Prix and going back to Hasetsu had him gain quite a bit of weight. He does tone up once he starts training with Victor though.
* FriendlyRival: One-sided. Yurio sees him as a rival, but the feeling isn't mutual, and Yuri has no problems being friendly with him or even cheering him on during the Rostelecom Cup.
* GratuitousEnglish: He tends to use this when speaking to Victor, which is meant to reflect how he and Victor [[TranslationConvention actually communicate in English with each other]]. Having studied abroad in Detroit, he's fluent in the language.
** He occasionally chirps a couple words of Gratuitous Thai and GratuitousRussian to other people of those respective nationalities.
* HeCleansUpNicely: Compare how he looks during his performance of ''eros'' in Episode 3 to his usual look. With his hair combed back and without the glasses, he looks stunning enough to make Victor ''whistle at him''.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Yuri does this ''a lot''. He describes himself as a “dime-a-dozen” skater within the Japanese Skating Federation who managed to get to the Grand Prix only to flunk out spectacularly, and a good chunk of his narration and dialogue deal with his self-doubt. This is also a man who made it to the Finals and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with five other skaters (including LivingLegend Victor Nikiforov) who could rightfully be called the best the world has to offer, a man who's described as “Japan's ace” by the national press, and a man who is seen as an idol to other hopeful Japanese skaters like Minami who beg for his autograph after he takes them in competition. But none of that even registers on his radar.
* AHeroToHisHometown: His hometown of Hasetsu, Kyushu, happily boasts about him. Posters of him line the train station walls, and many residents can recognize him on sight alone. Most know that he lost his major competitions though.
* HiddenDepths: Yuri already knows ballet thanks to Minako, but it turns out that ice-skating and ballet hardly encompass the range of what he can do; in the [[spoiler: credits sequence of Episode 10]] he breakdances with Yurio, works a pole with Christophe, and tangos with Victor, and he does all of it ''stone cold drunk''.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler: His decision to change some of the jumps of his short program at the Grand Prix Finals in an attempt to get a higher score led him to score ''lower'' than in the China Cup and the Rostelecom Cup, since he neglected to invoke ''eros'' in favor of heightening the technical aspects of the program]].
* {{Hypocrite}}: In a rage, [[spoiler: Victor [[WhatTheHellHero calls him out]]]] on wanting to [[spoiler: retire while telling Victor to return to the ice.]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler: He seems to be attempting to do this in Episode 11, when he tells Victor that "[they should] end this". However, it's vague whether as to he meant ending their professional relationship as coach and student, or ending their relationship in general. Episode 12 reveals that it's merely the former, although it still backfires on him as Victor shows that he is ''not'' happy with his decision at all]].
* InelegantBlubbering: Yuri has cried a few times on screen, and it's never pretty.
* InformedAttribute: His weight in the first two episodes. Now and then, he appears fat (mostly for {{Sight Gag}}s), but he only appears to be slightly chubby when on the ice in the first episode. Though, given how much Sayo Yamamoto loves her sight gags and visual humor, it's probably just her exaggerating his out-of-form state [[RuleOfFunny to milk it for comedy]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive: An even worse case than ''Victor''. Just contrast the [[spoiler: fight scene in Episode 12 to the one in Episode 7]]. His initial reaction to [[spoiler: shattering Victor's heart]] is [[DissonantSerenity completely apathetic]], reaching out to casually touch him while making an utterly inappropriate remark. He then proceeds to act confused and defensive when [[spoiler: Victor]] snaps at him. WordOfGod also comments that he's "quite cold-hearted", and is "someone who doesn't really try to get into people's hearts".
* InstantHumiliationJustAddYoutube: Played with; he's absolutely mortified over the video of him performing Victor's routine that goes viral, despite the fact that he receives nothing but praise for it.
* InstantWebHit: The video of him performing Victor's free skate routine becomes this, enough that it catches the attention of Victor himself. [[spoiler: Although he had already caught Victor's notice ''long'' before the video ever existed]].
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: He has a bright blue poodle-covered phone case, for goodness' sake. More seriously, his gender fluidity is explored (positively) in Episode 3 when he finds he connects to the female role in the ''eros'' routine story better than that of the male playboy he was expected to play and chooses to interpret the routine through her all the way up until Episode 6.
* LackOfEmpathy: An interesting, selective case. He has so little self-worth that he can't empathize with people that do value and support him, including his family and friends in Hasetsu, [[{{Fanboy}} Minami]], and Victor. He manages to [[spoiler: upset Victor in Episode 12 while acting [[DissonantSerenity completely detached from the situation]]. He actually enters the rink after their fight calmer than in any other competition, despite Victor being clearly miserable and depressed]]!
* TheLastDance: He understands that, because of his age and Victor potentially losing interest in him, this will very likely be his last season, even if he succeeds.
** Episode 10 puts [[spoiler: his worries about Victor losing interest in him to rest, as the man is head-over-heels for him and they're ''engaged'' to be married]], but whether or not this is going to be the final season of his career is still unclear.
** [[spoiler: As of the end of Episode 12, this is subverted, as he decides that he isn't going to retire just yet and will compete in another season]].
* LoserProtagonist: He'd tell you so. He calls himself "a-dime-a-dozen skater" and while it's true he's never been able to win any of the major competitions he's competed in, anything presented outside of his point of view paints a completely different picture -- he's a world-class skater who's AHeroToHisHometown and has been dubbed by the media, among other things, "Japan's ace" and "the pride of Japan". His paralyzingly low self-esteem just keeps him from seeing any of that, so really it's more like “a loser protagonist in his own eyes”.
* LoveConfession: To Victor, and on national TV, no less. [[TranslationConvention Too bad Victor can't understand it.]] [[spoiler:Then again, after the events of Episode 7, maybe he did understand a bit more than he let on...]]
* LuminescentBlush: Generally often, [[UpToEleven but every thirty seconds around Victor]].
* ManicPixieDreamGuy: Played an unwitting one to [[spoiler: Victor when he drunkenly invited him to become his coach. Victor, feeling compelled to search for a new direction after twenty years of devotion to the rink, took him up on the offer and, according to Victor, Yuri showed him a new world filled with “life and love”]].
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Due to TheReveal of Episode 10, [[spoiler:he becomes this to Victor, as Victor believed him to want him to be his coach and possibly to start a relationship, but as soon as they meet again, Yuri is bashful and shies away from his touching and flirting, which confuses Victor. It's made even worse as, ''after'' they get engaged, Yuri seems to want to end their relationship, though it's ambiguous whether he means it romantically or professionally.]]
* {{Meganekko}}: A male version of this trope. He doesn't wear his glasses when skating, though.
* MeaningfulName: His given name, Yuri (勇利), is written with the kanji for "courage"; while he doesn't have very much of that at first, he gradually becomes more confident over the course of the story. His family name, Katsuki (勝生), means "born to win", which complements Victor's name.
* MommasBoy: He and his mother are very close; she's the first person he talks to -- besides his coach -- after losing the Grand Prix Finals. She seems to be supportive and loving towards him, and both share a [[LikeFatherLikeSon physical resemblance]], including having somewhat similar body types. He's also quite close to his dad, but his attachment to his mother is more apparent.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed:
** Yuri seems to be a combination of various Japanese figure skaters.
*** Yuri's career and background are based almost verbatim off Tatsuki Machida. 23-year-old Machida, like Yuri, finished last during his first stint at the Grand Prix Finals in Sochi (which was actually held at the Iceberg Skating Palace), proceeded to fail at Nationals, and didn't make it to the World Championships that year. Machida was also a college student at the time, had no idea what to do when he graduated, and struggled with low self-esteem. Both Machida and Yuri went overseas to America, and Yuri's home rink "Ice Castle Hasetsu" was most definitely inspired from California's "Ice Castle" where Machida trained.
*** Parts of Yuri's personality and skating style draw inspiration from Daisuke Takahashi. Takahashi was known for having a "glass heart" from his fragile mentality during skates in his early days. This is reflected in Yuri's struggle with his anxiety and weak mentality on the ice throughout the entire series, as well as directly referenced in Victor's statement of "skaters' hearts are as fragile as glass" in Episode 7. However, Takahashi is a legend who has a sensual style of skating much like Yuri's ''eros'' persona. In addition, Yuri's strength is said to be step sequences, which are also Takahashi's specialty.
*** Visually, Yuri looks quite a bit like Yuzuru Hanyu and his idolization of Victor was directly inspired by Yuzuru's admiration of Victor's real-life counterpart, Evgeni Plushenko.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:As of Episode 10, he's happily engaged to his coach, Victor Nikiforov]].
* OhCrap: He does this twice in Episode 1: first was when he discovered that his reenactment of Victor's free skate routine was uploaded online and had gone viral, then the next day when, after being pounced on by a very familiar-looking poodle, his father tells him that they currently have a good-looking foreign guest and he realizes exactly who that guest might be.
* OldShame: InUniverse. He considers his Lohengrin program a part of his "dark past".
* OlderThanTheyLook: He turns 24 after Episode 9 and is the third oldest competing skater in the series after Christophe and Georgi, yet he looks a lot younger (with or without the glasses) than most of his competitors, [[YoungerThanTheyLook nearly all of whom are still in their late teens]].
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Between Victor the LivingLegend and TeenGenius Yurio, Yuri might not seem like much, but he still made it to the Grand Prix Finals, which means he's a ''damn good'' skater. His self-deprecating attitude doesn't help.
* PerformanceAnxiety: His FatalFlaw. He's an excellent skater, but hasn't won a single major competition yet because of his tendency to overthink every little thing and second-guess himself.
* PersonalityBloodTypes: Type A.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: A downplayed example, but he's quite sensitive in comparison to the short-tempered Yuri Plisetsky.
* ShipTease: With Victor, big time. [[spoiler: And as of Episode 10, they're now happily engaged]].
* ShrinkingViolet: He's a painfully shy, nervous person, especially around Victor when they first meet. The Nishigoris state outright that he doesn't make friends easily, and consequently prefers to deal with his problems by practicing at the skating rink or Minako's ballet studio instead of opening up to other people.
* SickeninglySweethearts: Becomes this with [[spoiler:Victor]] after their RelationshipUpgrade into an OfficialCouple, much to Yurio's chagrin.
* SkilledButNaive: He's talented and dedicated, but lacks the ability to deal with the pressure that comes from competition.
* SoreLoser: Both Yuko and Takeshi stated that he hates losing, which is why he doesn't like to make compromises like starting slow in his program. Although he's a more benevolent version, especially when compared to Yurio, since he won't hold his losses against anyone else.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it "Yuri" or "Yuuri"? Though in Japanese his name is pronounced and written as "Yuuri" [[note]]The Japanese logo for the show writes it in katakana as ユーリ, with the dash representing an elongated "u" sound[[/note]], it's romanized in the show itself as "Yuri".
* StepfordSmiler: [[TheWoobie Painfully so]]. He's the depressed type, and desperately tries to hide how broken he actually feels from the people around him. It's PlayedForLaughs in the first episode, where a SuperDeformed version of himself [[ArtStyleDissonance cheerfully explains how his skating career is going down the drain]].
* ThemeNaming: The "ri" (利) in his name comes from his father (利也 Toshiya), and is also found in his sister Mari's name (真利).
* TookALevelInBadass: Under Victor's tutelage, and through his own willpower, he becomes an even better skater. After a few months, he's now able to land jumps that he wasn't able to before, in particular, the quadruple Salchow and the quadruple flip (the latter being Victor's SignatureMove). Both the crowd and the other skaters note how much he had changed from the previous season. Additionally, he has become more assertive and dauntless, not allowing anyone else's expectations or opinions get to him. In fact, [[spoiler: he ''beats Victor's world record for the Men's Singles Free Skate'' in the Grand Prix Finals]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Pork cutlet bowls, so much so that they've become a trademark of the series itself.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: His competitors and the figure-skating world at large think he has nothing compared to Victor, and his HeroicBSOD in the previous season doesn't exactly inspire confidence. But thanks to his CharacterDevelopment, he's by and large exceeded their expectations with spectacular performance after spectacular performance.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: Yuko, his childhood crush, ended up marrying their mutual friend Takeshi Nishigori and having triplets six years before the show begins. He's over it though, and is now [[spoiler: a groom-to-be himself]].
* UnreliableNarrator: In a different way from most examples. It's not that he intentionally misleads the audience (in fact, to a degree, he's not even consciously aware he's doing so), but it's becoming more and more apparent how much his low self-esteem colors his narration. If you were to go by what he says alone, you would think he's an awkward, uninspired skater of middling talent who stumbled into the world of professional figure-skating almost by accident, instead of the sexy powerhouse performer he's shown us he can be, never mind the fact that Victor [[spoiler: is properly smitten with him, and has been for longer than Yuri could ever assume. The audience has no idea about any of this until Episode 10 though, because [[ForgottenFirstMeeting Yuri was blackout drunk at the banquet where he and Victor met]]]].
* WackyMarriageProposal: The wacky part is downplayed but [[spoiler:when he and Victor exchange pair rings, Yuri calls them "good luck charms". While it is part of the meaning, his intention is evident, and it fools exactly no one -- Victor makes it clear that they ''are'' engagement rings, and that they intend to get married once Yuri wins the gold medal at the Grand Prix Finals]].
* WeightWoe: He gains weight quite easily, which is not helped by his love of [[TrademarkFavoriteFood pork cutlet bowls]].
* WorthyOpponent:
** To Christophe, who considers him a valid substitute for Victor.
** Episode 12 reveals that [[spoiler:Yurio]] considers him this to some degree and looks absolutely baffled when [[spoiler:Victor tells him that Yuri intends to retire]].
* YokoOhNo: While more subtle and less violent than the usual examples, he's still subjected to this by several skaters, most of the media, and especially almost the entirety of Russia; although interestingly enough, [[spoiler: it isn't because he and Victor have become an item]]. Since Victor is the world's most renowned ice skating champion, fans and skaters alike resent Yuri because they see him as the reason why Victor retired from figure skating. Yuri even monologues about how he knows that almost no one wants to see him succeed at the Grand Prix.

[[folder:Victor Nikiforov]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yurionice_nikiforov_1.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/JunichiSuwabe (Japanese), Creator/JerryJewell (English)

A famous figure skating champion from Russia. At 27-years-old, he's close to retirement, and after seeing Yuri's video he decides to go to Japan to become his coach.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: He's the world's hottest bachelor and top male skater, but he can also be a total goofball and a bit of a {{Cloudcuckoolander}}. His trademark heart-shaped smile cements this status further.
* AmbiguousDisorder: There have been hints throughout the show, particularly in the later episodes, that Victor might be suffering from depression.
* BadassGay: He's the best skater living, capable of performing programs no one else can, and it's made absolutely clear that he's head-over-heels in love with [[spoiler: Yuri]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He normally has a very casual attitude and can even be downright goofy at times, but it wouldn't be a wise idea to get on his nerves, as we see in [[TranquilFury his reaction]] to Yurio speaking badly of Yuri; and then there's his reaction when [[spoiler: he learns of Yuri's intentions to retire in Episode 12]].
* BeyondTheImpossible: His championship skating routine has at least four quads. Most skaters would only put one or two in their routine tops[[note]]For good reason, too -- a quad, in any form, is considered the hardest move to pull off in ice skating.[[/note]], but here he is, popping them all ''cleanly'' like pills.
* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:With Yuri, in Episode 7.]]
* {{Bishonen}}: He was definitely this when he was a teenager, especially with his [[LongHairedPrettyBoy long hair]]. Even as an adult, he hasn't lost his pretty looks, since his body is long and slender and his features are quite delicate for a man in his late twenties.
* BrokenAce: Episode 10 implies that for the past twenty years, he's been sacrificing his personal life and relationships in order to focus solely on ice skating, not to mention that his ideal of constantly surprising everybody had also put an extra strain on him, due to not only having to give up things he likes, but also having to work extra hard in order to keep on surprising everyone. He managed to become a LivingLegend by giving up on every other aspect of his life, something that living with Yuri makes him realize.
* BrutalHonesty: He has no qualms over calling Yuri out on the fact that he is fat and has been eating his "reward food" non-stop even without winning anything at all lately. Later, when he is with both Yuris, he mentions that in the eyes of the public, they are not much more than a kitten and a piglet.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He’s a very flirtatious oddball who has, apparently, no sense of shame in showing his naked body [[spoiler:to Yuri, a man with whom he spent only one night dancing, even if said man was half-naked for much of the night and was hanging all over Victor,]] and declaring to Yuri that he will be his coach without even getting out of the bath. Nonetheless, he's one of the best ice skaters in the world, and basically a LivingLegend.
* ChickMagnet: He has a legion of women who are attracted to him.
* CrushBlush: He gets this during [[spoiler: his ForgottenFirstMeeting with Yuri (the forgotten part from Yuri's side)]].
* CryCute: In Episode 12. More like Cry Beautiful, actually.
* CuddleBug: Simply put, there hasn't been an episode where he ''isn't'' touchy-feely with Yuri. With everyone else though, he generally keeps a respectable distance.
* {{Determinator}}: Curiously enough, not really with regard to his own skating, although he may have been this when he was younger. Instead, he meets the criteria when it comes to [[spoiler:his love life. He became infatuated with a young man from another country (Yuri), risked his whole career to keep his promise to coach said man, upped sticks and moved his whole life to Japan, and spent the next six months or so pursuing Yuri romantically while also getting him in shape for the Grand Prix]]. He's also very much a Determinator when it comes to ''Yuri's'' career.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Aside from Yuri's CelebrityCrush [[spoiler:which eventually turns into a genuine romance]], when he winks to the public, men and women alike look absolutely smitten.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: Yuri spent the entirety of his career losing one competition after another, but Victor decides to stick with him anyway after seeing Yuri perform his gold-winning "Stay Close to Me" program.
* FatalFlaw: He's a skating prodigy, and as a coach, he does well in improving Yuri's skills. However, being at the top for many years caused him to have little knowledge on how to deal with people when they're feeling down, leaving him with no idea what to say or do. This shows when he [[spoiler: unintentionally drives Yuri to tears in Episode 7]]. It comes back at full force when [[spoiler: Victor is silent for most of the time even after he sees Yuri being visibly disappointed with his performance, and cheers on the other figure skaters while completely forgetting [[PerformanceAnxiety what kind]] [[HeroicSelfDeprecation of person]] he's currently engaged to.]]
* FemaleGaze: The scene at the hot springs has a generous focus on his naked figure.
* ForeignFanservice: Actively known as a handsome man? Check. NoSenseOfPersonalSpace? Check. Has the bulk of the fanservice shots in the show? Check. Creator/JunichiSuwabe[='s=] smooth, deep vocals? Check and check. And take note that he's the ''only'' one of the foreign cast[[labelnote:*]]Two, now that [[CampGay Christophe Giacometti]] has been introduced[[/labelnote]] that gets treated like this. Face it -- he's sex on skates.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: In two flavors: GratuitousRussian (which makes sense, as he ''is'' Russian) and GratuitousEnglish (probably due to traveling a lot, as well as to reflect how he and Yuri [[TranslationConvention speak to each other in English]]).
* {{Hypocrite}}: A minor example. Victor never listened to what his coach would tell him, though when he becomes Yuri's coach, he gets a little miffed himself in Episode 5 when Yuri ignores some of his advice. The problem gets resolved at the end of the episode.
* IKissYourHand: Does this to [[spoiler:Yuri]] at their [[spoiler:reunion in the airport]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** His lack of experience as a coach causes him to be this, which results in him [[spoiler: making Yuri cry by telling him that he'll resign being his coach if he doesn't place on the podium, which he only said to scare Yuri out of his anxiety]].
** In Episode 11, when [[spoiler: Yurio subtly mocks Yuri's performance by saying that Otabek will definitely score higher than him, Victor doesn't defend Yuri or even give him some reassurance and simply expresses awe at Otabek's performance, which hurts Yuri even further. In fact, he says nothing to comfort Yuri even after seeing how he's upset with the outcome of his short program. It's likely that he's keeping quiet to adhere to what Yuri asked of him in Episode 7, or because he doesn't notice that Yuri's mood is getting worse, but still.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: Something of an endearing variation, as this is PlayedForLaughs; he literally threw everything in Russia away to go to Japan and coach Yuri. This is lampshaded by his coach, who mentions that Victor will always do what he wants anyway. Celestino even seems to dig into him for this in Episode 4, expressing some confusion at him "playing coach" now.
* LivingLegend: One of, if not ''the'', best figure skaters in the world. Yuri even uses this exact phrase to describe him.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He wore his hair down to his waist as a teenager and in his early twenties. Now it's much shorter, but he's still quite pretty.
* LoveAtFirstSight: It's heavily implied that after [[spoiler: spending a night dancing with a wildly drunk Yuri]], Victor became absolutely smitten with him. When [[spoiler:Yuri hugs him and asks him to be his coach]], along with having a CrushBlush, his pupils dilate and he lets out an audible gasp.
* ManicPixieDreamGuy: The series ''heavily'' sets him up to be this to Yuri's melancholic depressive at the beginning and then gradually tears it down as the story progresses.
** [[spoiler: By Episode 10, as it turns out, they've been like this for ''each other'' all this time, as Victor monologues about how he'd been neglecting life and love for twenty years until Yuri came into his life... via getting smashed on 16+ flutes of champagne at what's traditionally a stuffy and straight-laced banquet and subsequently challenging the room at large to a dance-off, stripping, ''pole dancing'', and drunkenly begging Victor to be his coach. Yuri, on the other hand, ''was'' in a slump as he was losing his passion for figure skating, until Victor shows up, and the rest is history.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: He's too sweet and basically decent to qualify as a "bastard", but he definitely has a manipulative streak -- after all, he's a coach, and he has to know how to hit Yuri's buttons in order to ensure that he skates well (although it takes him a while to figure out what crosses the line -- see the disaster in Episode 7, compared to his successful prompting in Episode 12). Outwith that, he's been Yakov's student so long that he clearly knows how to handle his coach when other skaters would be intimidated into behaving, he practices StealthMentor techniques on Yurio, reckoning that this will be more useful to the younger skater, and he manages to wind fans and reporters around his little finger. However, the most significant instance of this is in the final episode, where [[spoiler:it is ''strongly'' implied that he reveals Yuri's impending retirement to Yurio in order to get the younger skater to prevent Yuri's retirement, pleading for Yurio's help without actually saying anything]].
* MeaningfulName: Not only is Victor's given name an apt one for a LivingLegend, his surname similarly comes from the Greek name "Nikephoros", which means "victory-bringer".
* TheMentor: To Yuri.
* MrFanservice: His body is given a lot of attention.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He has this reaction when he [[spoiler: inadvertently makes Yuri cry]].
* NakedFirstImpression: The first time he and Yuri really meet and talk [[spoiler: from Yuri's perspective, anyway]], Victor is completely naked and is not afraid to show it.
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: Even though he's generally a very touchy-feely person, he gets upset when Yuri pokes at the crown of his head. It's implied that he's balding, so his hair is a sensitive topic for him. It makes the ending credits, where Yuri and Victor are shown playfully washing each other's hair, all the more heartwarming.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: He's heavily based on Evgeni Plushenko, though not so much visually -- the designer ditched Plushenko's trademark aquiline nose and somewhat intimidating features, giving him a much softer face.
** Slightly subverted in that Victor's physical features are based off American actor John Cameron Mitchell. The mangaka stated in an interview that when she went to see the musical ''Theatre/HedwigAndTheAngryInch'', she was inspired to base Victor's good looks on him.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Interestingly, only to Yuri; other than hugging Yakov and Yurio once or twice, he appears to avoid touching everyone else. In the official art, he is even seen clinging to Yuri while they both are in the baths. In general, the official art has him very close and/or touching Yuri. Yuri eventually becomes comfortable with it.
** As it turns out, this is because he's actually been ''flirting'' with Yuri for all the times he's been trying to get close to him.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:As of Episode 10, he's now happily engaged to his protégé, Yuri Katsuki]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** He normally keeps calm during most situations, albeit in Episode 7, when he tries to keep Yuri from having a panic attack, he temporarily breaks away from his normally cool-headed demeanor when he tells Yuri to block out the noise of the audience.
** Despite Yurio's aggressive attitude and insulting remarks towards either him or Yuri, Victor is only indifferent or amused at best... until in Episode 10, where he reacts with thinly-veiled rage after Yurio crosses a line by making disparaging comments about [[spoiler: his engagement to Yuri]], showing that his patience with Yurio does have its limits.
** In Episode 12, after Yuri [[spoiler: expresses his intention to terminate their coach-student relationship]], Victor ''cries and shows outright anger at Yuri'', snapping at him for making such a decision.
* PeekABangs: His hairstyle covers his left eye. He seems to fit the "deception or concealment" type, since his hair fully covers his eye when he's being insincere, but it parts to reveal his eye when he's being honest. However, it turns out that he's not as deceptive as early episodes make him out to be, [[spoiler:as he has no ulterior motives for becoming Yuri's coach other than becoming smitten with Yuri at last year's banquet, and to fulfill Yuri's request to be his coach in the first place]].
* ThePerilsOfBeingTheBest: He was constantly expected to surprise the audience with his routines and lost his inspiration as a result, to the point he felt like [[spoiler: it was choking the life out of him]].
* RealityEnsues: Victor is mentioned to be close to retirement, [[note]]The skater who inspired his character, Evgeni Plushenko, retired at 32 after the Sochi Winter Olympics, and was plagued with health issues long before that — at his last stint at the Olympics, for example, he couldn't participate in the short singles because of a back problem, and carried the group stage basically [[HeroicResolve on painkillers and willpower alone]]. [[/note]] so he decides to try coaching Yuri, as coaching is a common career for retired athletes.
** As noted above, unlike most anime men with particularly pretty hair, Victor has to contend with the fact that his hair is thinning in his late twenties. He's one of the few male anime characters who have to face the fact that they may go bald. In a medium where balding is shown as a post-TimeSkip shock rather than a process that the character is aware of, it's unusual to see a character aware of -- and worried about -- this particular aspect of aging without it being a RunningGag (where the anxiety is usually unjustified). It has to be particularly galling for someone whose pretty looks were a major part of his persona and career, and who once had hair down to the middle of his back.
* RunningGag:
** Victor has a habit of forgetting the promises he makes.
** He also has a habit of embarrassing Yuri... while naked.
* SecretlySelfish: A little bit, but not for the reasons suspected. He takes on a failing skater as his first student, putting his entire career on the back burner to do so, leaving his fans and peers absolutely baffled by this bizarre act of whimsical altruism. Most people who know him believe that he's doing it to entertain himself, or to get material for his own routines. [[spoiler:As it turns out, it's a mixture of keeping his word and self-interest: Yuri ''asked'' him to become his coach, and he's keeping his word... but he also became intrigued (if not [[LoveAtFirstSight instantly smitten]]) with Yuri himself, and coaching him became a way of getting close to the object of his affections]].
* SexGod: He has been described by his VA as "a natural sex bomb".
* SexSells: No doubt, a part of his huge popularity comes from his WinkDing, [[TheTease teasing people]] and his good looks. It is also a meta example, as he became an instant subject of fanart and fanfiction.
* SexyMentor: He coaches Yuri through his presumed final season and gives him the confidence and sex appeal needed to start becoming a better skater, and he's very attractive himself. It's honestly not that hard to say he's this.
* ShipTease: With Yuri, naturally. [[spoiler:As of Episode 7, they've now evolved out of that and into an OfficialCouple.]]
* SickeninglySweethearts: Becomes this with [[spoiler:Yuri]] after their RelationshipUpgrade into an OfficialCouple, much to Yurio's chagrin.
* SignatureMove: According to the first episode, Victor's is a quadruple flip.
* SignificantBirthDate: Victor was born on December 25th. Episode 10 makes a point of noting that Russia doesn't make a fuss of Christmas Day, but it's an important date elsewhere in the world. Given Victor's often playful, occasionally childish nature and love of surprises, he fits the more "Western" ideas about Christmas, whereas taken from a Japanese perspective, [[spoiler:he fits the more romantic connotations of the day, as love turns out to be one of his main motivations]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: So is it Victor, or is it Viktor? The most culturally correct spelling for his name is "Viktor", but all official material and InUniverse has his name written "Victor".
* StealthMentor: His approach to coaching Yurio during Episode 3. [[spoiler: He tells him to do things to clear his head to find his motivation for his program, didn't see a need to give him a pep talk before his performance, and in general was aloof to him versus Yuri; who he noticeably spent time with to help him gain confidence to do the routine.]]
* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler: The depressed type]]. He tends to smile through every situation, no matter how frustrated or miserable he is. It may have driven perception of him as the fickle and selfish emperor of the ice, when in actuality [[spoiler: he felt like his skating career was a chain around his neck, strangling him.]]
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike:
** With the triplets; he usually goes on board with their [[{{Otaku}} fangirling over ice skating and eagerness for a competition]].
** With Christophe; they're both oddballs who are open about their sexuality and thus get along well off the ice.
* StrongButUnskilled: As a coach. He knows how to create a great routine, how to milk the best out of each skater and make Yuri shine on stage, but as Yakov mentions, [[InnocentlyInsensitive he still has trouble helping Yuri off the ice]] and in Episode 7, Yuri is the one to has to console him, instead of the opposite.
* TearsOfJoy: He sheds these when [[spoiler:Yuri lands the quadruple flip in his free skate at the Grand Prix Finals]].
* TheTease: A rare male example, but apparently he likes being this to Yuri. He is also described as having a very flirtatious personality. In fact, in the first day of being around Yuri, he wanted them to sleep in the same room and when alone, he says he wants to talk about Yuri while holding Yuri by the chin and placing his hand over his.
** This is eventually subverted however, with the revelation in Episode 10 that [[spoiler:Yuri had actually drunkenly hit on Victor at a banquet after the Sochi Grand Prix Finals,]] it is likely Victor was not just teasing, but was seriously flirting with Yuri. [[spoiler:Not that Yuri remembers anything about that night]].
* TeenGenius: He was already an ice-skating prodigy when he was a junior.
* TranquilFury: Hinted at in Episode 10, when he grabs Yurio's face after the latter talks about him, and then Yuri, in a derisive manner. Even though his expression shows a calm smile, his hand is trembling, which indicates that he's barely containing his anger.
* WackyMarriageProposal: While they're already engaged, in Episode 12 [[spoiler:Victor reiterates the proposal by saying that he wants to kiss Yuri's gold medal. As they promised each other to get married after Yuri wins a gold medal, the meaning doesn't escape him and they break down laughing and crying with joy, making up at the same time]].
* WinkDing: Not only prone to this, but is also quite the flirtatious and charming variation of it. A single wink was enough to send a bunch of male and female reporters alike swooning with [[WingdingEyes Heart Eyes]].
** He also does this to Yuri when they meet.
* {{Workaholic}}: His monologue on Episode 10 reveals that he never stopped to take vacations or to stop thinking about ice skating for the past twenty years. Deconstructed in which during his time off, he is finally realizing what he is missing, especially after he met Yuri.

[[folder:Yuri Plisetsky]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yurionice_plisetsky_0.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KoukiUchiyama (Japanese), Creator/MicahSolusod (English)

A 15-year-old Russian skater who is getting ready for his debut in the senior division. He is talented, but also a jerk.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: He can be this, as he is quite explosive in his reactions, but also quite dorky and exaggerated and is actually a fan of cats.
* AlwaysSecondBest: He's upset at [[spoiler: placing second to J.J. in both Skate Canada and the Rostelecom Cup]].
** [[spoiler: Finally subverted in the finale, where he finally defeats J.J. and Yuri and places first in the Grand Prix Finals.]]
* AnimalMotif: Cats, though it can also extend to felines in general. He has a cat at home and often wears clothes that either have leopard print or pictures of big cats on them. It's even acknowledged InUniverse, since Victor compares him to a kitten and his fans wear cat-eared headbands.
* {{Bishonen}}: Is quite feminine in appearance, coupled with a lithe build and petite height. No wonder his fans call him the "Russian Fairy".
* ChickMagnet: He has an entire fan-club of girls enamored with him. [[UnwantedHarem It annoys rather than flatters him.]]
* CryCute: [[spoiler: In Episode 12, after he performs his free skate]].
* CultureClash: When he arrives in Japan, he has some difficulties adjusting to local customs: he refuses to use the hot springs because he can't bathe in front of other people, and eats katsudon with a fork instead of chopsticks. He adapts quickly, though.
* {{Determinator}}: His training regimen in brutal, and he's only fifteen. Nonetheless, he's prepared to do what it takes to win gold at the Grand Prix Final. When the final itself rolls around, he finds even ''more'' determination to win, becoming hell-bent on getting the gold [[spoiler:in order to prevent Yuri Katsuki, who was in first place, from retiring]].
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Zigzagged in the span of a few minutes. He mentions knowing he can't post pictures, so his coach can't track him down, but as soon as he finds a shirt he really likes, he takes a selfie with it and posts it anyway.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His first scene is him following Yuri to the bathroom just to scream to him that he should give up.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: More plain jerk than an outright bad guy, but he's really close to his grandfather, and Yuri even mentions that his expression seems to soften when he thinks of him. When his grandfather shows up in Episode 8, Yurio cheerfully greets him with a flying {{glomp}}.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: Episode 12 reveals that [[spoiler: he was this for Yuri ever since the beginning]].
* FatalFlaw: [[spoiler: During his performance of ''On Love: Agape'', despite having found what makes him vulnerable and feel unconditional love, incorporating the emotions into his routine was his downfall. He found himself focusing more on landing his techniques, almost ignoring the emotions completely. He is aware of it, however, and apologizes to his grandfather, saying he knows he can do better; Yurio looked particularly pained during and after the performance, hinting maybe he couldn't bring himself to fully commit to the emotions.]]
** [[spoiler: It happens again in Episode 8, where after he becomes irritated with watching Victor and Yuri cheer him on and once again can't focus on his ''agape''. This causes him to flub his first leap, but he makes up for it in the second half.]]
* {{Foil}}: To his Japanese counterpart, Yuri Katsuki, obviously.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: With Otabek, whom he met back when he was ten on Yakov's summer camp.
* FriendlyRivalry: Calling it friendly may be a stretch, but even though he and Georgi both compete in the Grand Prix Series, his attitude towards Georgi's performances is notably civil, contrasting his reactions whenever Yuri performs.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler: In Episode 3, he already knew he lost to Yuri before he even finished his performance. Instead of throwing a fit as he had done prior, he silently slips away and heads back to Russia, telling Yuko he plans on winning the Grand Prix Finals.]] He's still pretty bitter about it, however.
* GreenEyedMonster: Not in the romantic sense; but he seems to deeply resent how Victor favors the other Yuri more. In fact, Yurio isn't amused when Victor left Russia to train Yuri, and he immediately flies to Japan afterwards to confront Victor about it. Part of it is that he wants Victor to honor his promise to choreograph a routine for Yurio, and part of it is that he wants Victor to be his coach.
** There are some implications given by WordOfGod that [[spoiler: he may be this in the romantic sense too, but not because he is in love with Victor, but with ''Yuri'']].
* GrowingUpSucks: Puberty can be a very a hard time for ice skaters, as their bodies change so drastically it affects their skating. It's even worse for Yuri because a great deal of his charm as a skater comes from his lithe, flexible body and androgynous looks, and he is very aware of the fact that he's going to lose them as he grows older.
* HumblePie: Downplayed. At first, he ignores anything his coach would tell him, and would slack off from practice due to his arrogance (which came from being undefeated in the junior division). However, his loss to Yuri in Episode 3 caused him to become more diligent in practice and more willing to listen to his coach's advice, since it reminded him that he's now in the ''senior'' division with completely different and more seasoned competitors to face against. Despite all of this, he's still determined to win gold at the Grand Prix Finals.
* IcyBlueEyes: He has blue-green eyes that fit his cold attitude. Otabek likens them to "the eyes of a soldier."
* IdenticalStranger: According to Yuri's sister, he looks exactly like the blond in a BoyBand she follows; which is why she nicknames him "Yurio" as a portmanteau of his own name and the band member's.
* InsufferableGenius: He is a huge JerkJock whose jerkassery comes from, in no small part, his talent in ice skating.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: He's developed a pretty close friendship with Yuko, who's ten years his senior.
* InSeriesNickname: He has several:
** In Episode 2, he gets the nickname of "Yurio" from Mari to [[OneSteveLimit avoid confusion between him and her brother]]. Victor and Yuri continually refer to him as this throughout the rest of the series.
** He's known by his fans as the "Russian Fairy" for his graceful movements and androgynous looks, and by other skaters as the "Russian Punk" due to his brash and rude attitude.
** In Episode 8, he calls himself the [[RedBaron "Ice Tiger of Russia"]], though it isn't clear if other people call him that.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: The idea for his big competition during the Grand Prix Finals will be to act like a prima ballerina.
* IrrationalHatred: He antagonized Yuri simply because they share the same first name, and it only gets worse from there, even though Yuri has been nothing but civil and kind to him. [[spoiler: This is eventually subverted in Episode 12; he was actually ''interested'' in Yuri ''because'' they share the same name, and he has always admired him]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He is rude and bratty, but he also helps Yuri improve his quadruple Salchow for the "Hot Springs on Ice" competition, even though they are rivals and he would have a bigger chance of winning if the latter messed up. He also cares a great deal about his grandfather, using his feelings of familial love for him as the basis of his ''agape'' routine and greeting him enthusiastically in Episode 8.
* KickTheDog:
** You have to admit, storming into the bathroom [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown just to yell at Yuri and tell him to give up already, when he knows that Yuri was not in the best emotional state at the time]], is an extremely low blow... [[FromBadToWorse and that was just the beginning]]. [[spoiler: Though Episode 12 downplays this scene by a margin; Yurio intended to simply talk to Yuri to see what kind of person he was, although ended up telling him off instead in anger and disappointment after hearing him cry]].
** In Episode 10, the day after [[spoiler: Yuri and Victor's engagement]], he insults [[spoiler: said engagement]] to Victor's face, even saying that [[spoiler: "the ring [Victor] got from [Yuri] is garbage"]].
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: An awful habit of his; he doesn't seem to pick up, let alone care, when someone is in a situation in which any more of [[{{KickTheDog}} Kicking The Dog]] just crosses the line into plain and unnecessary cruelty:
** In the very first episode, while Yuri is having a breakdown in the bathroom, he follows him there just to scream at him and break him some more, as if Yuri needed that to add to his self-loathing. [[spoiler: Episode 12 reveals that this was done out of impulse and was not his original intention, but it still wasn't helping Yuri at the time]].
** Again in Episode 11, when [[spoiler:Yuri cried on the ice over fumbling his final jump, even if he seems to have put himself together, Yurio [[SarcasmMode still finds it appropriate]] to make comments over how he thinks the other skaters will rank higher than him anyway]].
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: In an unusual GenderFlip example, he's based off of female Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya, [[https://twitter.com/soukatsu_/status/785731569998712833 and it shows]]. Original concept creator and character designer Mitsurou Kubo thought Yulia looked quite fierce for someone so young and saw her covered in leopard print clothing after a skate, which resulted in Yuri's design.
* OddFriendship: With TheStoic and composed Otabek.
* OneSidedRivalry: Towards Yuri, who is seemingly uninterested in having this kind of relationship.
* OneSteveLimit: Invoked; he wants Yuri to give up, so there won't be two Yuris on the next competition. Yuri's sister Mari later dubs him "Yurio" to avoid confusion, which he isn't too fond of.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: In Episode 3, when thinking about his grandfather, Yuri notices and comments on how Yurio looks unusually vulnerable. In Episode 8, Yurio also becomes far more cheerful than he usually is when he meets up with his grandfather.
* PeekABangs: His long hair tends to fall over his right eye. He fits the "solitary" type, with his rude and hot-tempered attitude keeping him from really becoming friends with anyone.
* PetTheDog: In Episode 9, when he [[spoiler:consoles Yuri over placing fourth in the Rostelecom Cup. He even gives him pirozhkis stuffed with his TrademarkFavoriteFood as an early birthday present]].
* TheResenter: To both Yuri and Victor (but ''especially'' to Yuri), as he acts a lot more bitter towards them than he usually would towards others. The reason as to ''why'' is unknown, but Victor implies that it may be because Yurio wanted to compete against him, yet Yuri's involvement in Victor's life made that impossible. Either that, or he simply can't comprehend why Victor [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim would easily abandon his career for Yuri]].
* RubberMan: He has a high level of flexibility, especially for his age and gender.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: He is visibly sad and disappointed with his silver medal in Skate Canada, [[spoiler: and again at the Rostelecom Cup. What makes it worse is that he lost to the same person ''twice'']].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: A downplayed example, but he's the Manly Man to Yuri's Sensitive Guy.
* SignatureMove: According to the announcer in Episode 3, his signature move is the combination spin.
* SoreLoser: Despite [[spoiler: accepting his defeat at the hot spring event]] (see GracefulLoser above), he makes it his goal -- aside from winning the gold medal at the Grand Prix Finals -- to give Yuri a crushing defeat so that Victor will stop being his coach, which means that he isn't exactly over his loss.
* TeenGenius: At the beginning of the series, he is the 14-year-old gold medalist of both the Junior Grand Prix and the Junior Worlds Championship, and is preparing his debut in the senior division at the unlikely age of 15. During the course of the show, he goes on to [[spoiler:get silver in both his Grand Prix qualifying events (securing himself a place in the finals), win the Golden Spin, and ''break a world record'' with his short program in his first Grand Prix Finals -- a world record set by [[TheAce Victor Nikiforov]].]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: After showing a nicer side of himself to Yuri and gaining a new MoralityPet in Otabek, his behavior towards Yuri and Victor becomes more vicious than ever during the [[spoiler:Grand Prix Finals]], taking his time to worsen Yuri's mental state after [[spoiler:the latter had a small breakdown on ice]] and telling how much he thinks other skaters are better than him besides literally kicking Yuri and Victor out of the kiss-and-cry. Not to mention, there is how [[spoiler:his breaking Victor's world record clearly boosted his ego]].
* TrainingFromHell: The tutelage of Lilia, a Russian ballet instructor who is not at all impressed by him and pushes him past his limits.
* TrashOfTheTitans: What we see of his bedroom in Episode 2 is a mess of scattered clothes and half-eaten candy.
* UnwantedHarem: Yurio has a huge fan club who calls themselves "Yuri's Angels". He's often seen running from them, and doesn't seem happy to take photos with them. He does come to their defense when J.J.'s girlfriend say that his fan club, "J.J.'s Girls", are cuter and more respectful of their personal space.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: The few glimpses we get of Yuri's childhood with his grandfather show him to be an overall much nicer child than the short-tempered brat we know today.
* [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim What Does He See In Him?]]: Wonders about this regarding Victor's relationship with [[spoiler:his now fiance, Yuri]].
* WhenHeSmiles: Considering that he's usually in a grumpy or sour mood, his smiles become all the more heartwarming to see. So far, his genuinely happy smile so far have been given only to his grandfather, Yuri and Otabek.
* YouAreFat: He tends to resort to this kind of insult when confronting Yuri, often calling him fat, a pig, [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs or a fat pig]]. However, Yuri isn't at all affected by these insults and just shrugs them off, since by Episode 2 he's already gotten back in shape. This is meant to highlight how petty and immature Yurio is being, especially when [[NeverLiveItDown he still continues with the insult in the following episodes]].

->'''Voiced by''': Mari Doi (Japanese), Creator/MonicaRial (English)

An 18-year-old red-haired ice skater who trains with Yurio in Russia. Ranked third in the world in ladies.
----
* EffortlessAmazonianLift: She's able to pick up Yurio and hold him over her head like it's nothing.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: She supports Yuri just as much as the other figure skaters do, cheering for him alongside Sara and the others during Rostelecom Cup and the Grand Prix Finals.
* FieryRedhead: When provoked, as Yuri mentioned about what happened to her ex-boyfriend.
* FriendlyRivalry: She gets along well with Sara.
* TheGadfly: She seems happy to pick on Yurio.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Her relationship with Yurio.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Downplayed, due to Yurio's skinny body, but she is capable of lifting him over her head without breaking a sweat.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: She, along with Sara got to participate in the Women's Grand Prix Finals, but we never saw her skating.
* WomanScorned: According to Yurio, Mila gave her then-boyfriend the beating of a lifetime when she found out he was cheating on her with another girl.

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phichit_6.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KenshoOno (Japanese), Creator/JoelMcDonald (English)

A 20-year-old figure skater from Thailand who was both Yuri's college roommate and rinkmate in Detroit. He is currently training in Bangkok, where he hails from. He won bronze at the Four Continents Championships the previous season.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: Particularly due to his ShipperOnDeck tendencies and perpetually happy attitude.
* AnimalMotifs: He tends to be associated with hamsters. He has three hamsters as pets, his phone case has a picture of a hamster on it, and his ImagineSpot in Episode 12 of skating in his own ice show depicts his fellow skaters as wearing hamster hats.
* AudienceSurrogate: How he comes off to the audience due to his reaction to [[spoiler:seeing Victor and Yuri's engagement rings]].
* CameraFiend: He loves sharing photos and videos of his daily life in Instagram and other SNS. He especially loves to take selfies. Victor even mentions that Phichit can take selfies better than anyone he ever met.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He has a BlinkAndYouMissIt appearance in the first episode, watching Yuri's viral video.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Yuri, whom he is more than happy to help in Episode 4 when Yuri needs a song for his free program. They both compete in the China Cup [[spoiler: and in the Grand Prix Finals]]. According to Victor, Phichit is the only one of the foreign skaters that Yuri truly considers a friend.
* {{Guyliner}}: He seems to be [[https://yuri-on-ice-sinner.tumblr.com/post/154201246293/phichits-eyeliner-reblog-if-you-agree wearing winged eyeliner]] in Episode 10.
* AHeroToHisHometown: To his entire country, as he is [[spoiler:the first Thai skater to make it to the Grand Prix Finals]].
* {{Keet}}: A happy upbeat guy who is always in a cheery mood and taking selfies with everybody.
* NervousWreck: In Episode 8, he is in this state. Justified, as [[spoiler:the results of the Rostelecom Cup might kick him out of the Grand Prix Finals]]. Lucky for him, that doesn't happen.
* NiceGuy: Phichit has a humble, friendly, and genial personality and is supportive of his fellow skaters.
* TheNicknamer: He calls his coach Celestino "Ciao Ciao".
* PatrioticFervor: To a lesser degree than J.J., but one of Phichit's greatest motivations while skating his programs is proudly representing his home country of Thailand through his skills. [[spoiler: He's the first Thai skater to qualify for the Grand Prix Finals in Barcelona, and his determination to win is only that much stronger as a result.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: This made clear by his reaction to [[spoiler:Victor and Yuri's engagement]].
* TearsOfJoy: He sheds this after [[spoiler: skating his short program in the Grand Prix Finals]].

[[folder:Kenjiro Minami]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minami_2.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/AyumuMurase (Japanese), Creator/TrinaNishimura (English)

A 17-year-old Japanese ice skater who Yuri must face in a local competition in Japan so he can qualify for the Japanese Nationals, due to his devastating loss the previous year. Described as a "Yuri-otaku."
----
* {{Adorkable}}: He's a ball of energy who's very enthusiastic about showing his admiration for Yuri.
* CuteLittleFangs: He has a prominent one which is usually visible even when his mouth is closed.
* {{Fanboy}}: As Yuri is Japan's top male singles skater, he is the personal hero and idol of all the young skaters in Minami's generation. Minami even travels to Yu-topia in Episode 10 to lead everyone in cheering Yuri on for the [[spoiler:Grand Prix Finals.]] The feelings Minami holds for Yuri are described in the same way as the feelings Yuri held for Victor in Episode 1.
* FashionableAsymmetry: According to the costume designer of the show, Kenjiro's outfit for the short program is supposed to be mismatched. The tie is too, and it's supposed to be deliberate asymmetrical, but he manages to tie it correctly.
* FriendlyRivalry: He also wants to defeat Yuri in the Grand Prix someday, despite his admiration for him.
* GracefulLoser: The first thing Kenjiro does after Yuri wins the Kyushu Championship is to congratulate him for his victory, before asking for an autograph.
* {{Keet}}: He's young, full of energy, has MulticoloredHair and is a figure skater, so he definitely fits.
* MulticoloredHair: His hair is mostly blond with a red streak in the front.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Kenjiro is 17, making him two years Yurio's senior. However, he's very baby-faced and is even smaller than the petite and lithe Yurio.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: When Yuri tries to downplay his performances as a "dark past", he shoots back that none of them are that bad.

->'''Voiced by''': Shunichi Toki (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo (English)

A 19-year-old American skater who won gold at Skate America. He is also competing in the China Cup.
----
* AmbiguouslyChristian: The song he composed for his short program is about seeing God in the world around him.
* CameraFiend: Together with Phichit and Guang-Hong, he's noted for his love of social media.
* DoingItForTheArt: InUniverse, the main reason he skates is to express his love of music. He also choreographs all of his routines himself.
* {{Eagleland}}: Downplayed, but he is the sole character to dance to a song with rap, a typically American genre, in it. Aside from that, he's more down-to-earth than the stereotypical anime American. J.J. on the other hand...
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:After getting the last place in the China Cup he swears to get better and try again, but he is still clearly sad about it.]]
* LatinoIsBrown: His skin is a bit darker than other North American characters', showing his Mexican ancestry.
* MixedAncestry: He's Mexican-American.
* {{Spexico}}: A minor one. The surname "de la Iglesia" is common enough in Spain, but it can sound odd to Mexican audiences.

[[folder:Otabek Altin]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otabek.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/YoshimasaHosoya (Japanese)

An 18-year-old Kazakh skater who won the silver medal at the Skate America competition and was the previous season's bronze medalist at the Worlds. He's known for disliking social media, and is a hero in his native country, Kazakhstan.
----
* BadassBiker: In Episode 10, when he swoops in with his bike and saves Yurio from his fangirls.
* TheComicallySerious:
** When [[spoiler:Victor announces his engagement to Yuri]], he applauds while still having a completely straight face.
** Also when [[spoiler: Yurio wishes him good luck]], he just looks back at him and gives him a thumbs up coupled again with the same straight face.
** During Phichit's ImagineSpot in Episode 12, he can also be seen wearing a colorful costume that includes a hamster hat... [[RuleOfThree once again, with the same straight face]].
* ConnectedAllAlong: With Yurio, whom he shared a rink with five years prior during Yakov's summer camp.
* CoolBike: He saves Yurio from his fangirls with it.
* DeathGlare: He sports a rather impressive one at the end of his short program that seemed to be directed at [[spoiler: J.J.]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: He briefly appears on the image of the winners of Skate America and as the bronze medalist during the previous year's World Championships.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: With Yurio; they met at Yakov's summer training camp five years ago. Yurio left an impression on Otabek, but didn't remember him.
* AHeroToHisHometown: In this case, to his entire country.
* HomeSweetHome: At the age of twelve he went to Yakov's summer camp to train, where he met Yurio, but from there, he went to various other countries before being finally able to go back to his country and hometown's rink one year prior to the events of the anime.
* MoralityPet: To Yurio, as his first friend and the sole person he treats nicely in the [[spoiler:Grand Prix Finals]].
* OnlyFriend: To Yurio; he is described as Yurio's first friend.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: While nearly every single figure skater appearing in the series draws some inspiration from a real figure skater or two, Otabek is explicitly acknowledged by the creator to be modeled off of the Kazakhstanian Olympic bronze medalist, Denis Ten.
* RedBaron: Often called by news as "The Hero of Kazakhstan".
* SugarAndIcePersonality: While he's more often than not TheStoic and a bit distant with the rest of the competitors, he has also shown a softer side. This is more evident with Yurio, looking more at ease and relaxed around the younger skater than when we first see him.
* ShipperOnDeck: He claps quite enthusiastically ([[TheComicallySerious while keeping a straight face]]) when [[spoiler: Phichit loudly reveals Victor and Yuri's engagement during their dinner.]]
* TheStoic: He almost never shows any emotion.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He's 18, but his stern-looking and angular face makes him look older than that.

->'''Voiced by''': Yutaro Honjo (Japanese), Howard Wang (English)

A 17-year-old Chinese skater, competing in the China Cup and the winner of the bronze medal on the Skate America.
----
* {{Adorkable}}
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest character among the competitors in the China Cup. Although he's two years Yurio's senior, he seems younger than the latter due to his more pliable personality.
* CameraFiend: Together with Leo and Phichit, he posts a whole lot of photos on social media.
* {{Fanboy}}: To Victor. In Episode 6, when Leo mentions that Victor will be at the restaurant he's going to, Guang-Hong immediately wants to go.
* ShrinkingViolet: He's shy and soft-spoken, unlike his friends Phichit and Leo.
* YouthfulFreckles: Promotional pictures and key visuals show him with freckles. In the show proper, they look more like a slight blush over his nose and cheeks.

[[folder:Jean-Jacques Leroy]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jj_0.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/MamoruMiyano (Japanese), Jeremy Inman (English)

A 19-year-old Canadian skater. He won the gold medal at Skate Canada and is the bronze medalist of the previous season's Grand Prix Final. He comes from a family of figure skaters.
----
* AlwaysSecondBest: Much like Christophe, while he is a good skater, he is eclipsed by [[TheAce Victor]] and also aspires to defeat him.
* AmbiguouslyChristian: He crosses himself before his short program both times. This may or [[http://badkerville.tumblr.com/post/153673597489/ may not]] be religious.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He has significantly tan skin even though it's winter, and so does his father and some other members of his family. Considering how racially diverse Canada is (specifically Québec, where he's likely to be from), it's entirely possible that he's not white or is of mixed blood.
* BrokenAce: He is the winner of Skate Canada and was the bronze medalist of the previous season's Grand Prix Finals. Although they don't mention it, his short program score in Russia, [[spoiler: 113.56, would be a real-life ''world record''. In fact, he is also the winner of the Rostelecom Cup]]. However, [[spoiler:in Episode 11, he has an anxiety attack [[ThePerilsOfBeingTheBest from the pressure to win]]. It causes his to mess up so badly he gets the worst score of his entire senior division career, though he smiles through it for the sake of his fans.]]
* CanadaEh: ''Averted''. J.J. is pretty much the antithesis of the stereotypical apologetic Canadian with his bombastic actions and ItsAllAboutMe attitude. He's in fact closer to the [[{{Eagleland}} stereotypical hammy American]]. Though within Canada, he does fit the Montréal stereotype.
* CatchPhrase: "It's J.J. Style!", which is usually accompanied by a specific pose where he crosses his arms and forms two Js with his thumbs and index fingers.
* ChickMagnet: {{Implied}} given how Isabella mentioned his club of fangirls, the "J.J. Girls".
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: {{In-Universe}} his Short Program music, "Theme of King J.J.", which he is seen singing, was a collaboration between him and a rock band.
* FashionDesigner: He designs his own fashion line.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: He's rather unapproachable compared to everyone else, and it's pretty clear he isn't popular with the other skaters. While there's a get together of skaters that even Otabek and Yurio were invited to, he wasn't. As soon as he appears, the group announces that the party is over, though he does seem to try to apologize and to be friends with them.
* TheGadfly: He ''loves'' picking on Yurio, much to the latter's chagrin.
* GracefulLoser: While he is visibly upset over [[spoiler: his loss in the Grand Prix Finals, which is already made clear even before the free program, he doesn't throw a fit and accepts it all with a smile instead, bowing to his fans with his trademark pose and CatchPhrase]].
* HiddenDepths: It's highly possible that his arrogant and overconfident personality is just a front he puts up to keep himself from succumbing to pressure, [[spoiler: which is what happens to him in Episode 11]].
* InSeriesNickname: J.J.
* InsufferableGenius: He is as good as they get, even getting [[spoiler:gold in both Skate Canada and the Rostelecom Cup]], and he is very aware of how much better he is than most competitors. It is most likely due to his attitude that he is the least liked of the skaters that reached the Grand Prix Finals; in Episode 10, all the other skaters were having a get-together before the event, but when J.J. showed up, they all got up and left.
* ItsAllAboutMe
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He can be really narcissistic and a bit of TheGadfly, but he's far from a JerkJock, and the fact that he participates in charity work during the off-season ''does'' say something. He also genuinely cares about his girlfriend and his fans, and feels grateful towards them when [[spoiler:they continue to cheer for him even after he flubs his routine in the short program section of the Grand Prix Finals in Episode 11]].
* LikeFatherLikeSon: His family are also figure skaters; his parents were Olympic ice dancing champions and he has a younger brother and sister who are both in the junior division.
* MrFanservice: Not as much as Victor or Christophe, but we were still given a clear view of his extremely toned body during one of his monologues.
* {{Narcissist}}: Everything about him is about nothing else than himself. His song for the short program was made by a band, it's a song called "Theme of King J.J." in which he describes himself as a king in the top of the world and invites others to follow him. He also spends his entire inner monologue speaking about how amazing he is. He's a nicer example than most though.
* NoSocialSkills: A possible interpretation to his relationship with the other skaters is that he genuinely isn't very good at making friends. He was truly joking when he arrived at their get-together in Episode 10 and ended up making them leave early -- to which he tried to apologize for, and it's likely he really does want to be friends with them.
* NotSoDifferent: With Yuri. Personality-wise, they couldn't be any more different. What they do have in common is that while they're both skilled skaters, [[spoiler: they're susceptible to PerformanceAnxiety and can be intimidated by other skaters, which bites J.J. in the ass during his short program in the Grand Prix Finals and causes him to place dead last]].
* OfficialCouple: With his fiancée Isabella.
* PatrioticFervor: He has a tattoo of the Canadian Maple Leaf on his arm.
* PerformanceAnxiety: Even he can suffer from this; [[spoiler:he has a bad anxiety attack due to the pressure of the Grand Prix Finals during his routine, leading to him messing up so bad he comes in last.]]
* ThePerilsOfBeingTheBest: He's a favorite to win the Grand Prix and has won [[spoiler: gold in both Skate Canada and the Rostelecom Cup]] but as a result [[spoiler: the pressure of winning finally gets to him and leads to an anxiety attack]].
* RenaissanceMan: World-class figure skater, singer and composer, fashion designer, charity worker...
* TheRival: To Yurio, who he has [[spoiler: defeated twice]], though it seems to be one-sided on Yurio's part.
* TheRockstar: He also plays in a rock band, that helped him compose a song to skate.
* SickeninglySweethearts: Isabella and J.J. often flirt in each other's presence, much to the annoyance of anyone else who's around.
* SitcomArchNemesis: To Yurio. J.J. is mostly harmless in his [[TheGadfly teasing]], but Yurio hates him to a hilarious extent because J.J. keeps defeating him.
* ShirtlessScene: He can be seen shirtless playing with a band.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it "Jean-Jacques" or "Jean-Jack"? What makes it a bit more confusing that the other examples in this series is how both spellings are used. While the subs, the official website, and the Grand Prix Final results in the first episode spell his name as "Jean-Jacques", the posters that J.J.'s fans hold in Episode 8 spell his name as "Jean-Jack".
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Want to know how J.J. will look in 25 years? Just take a look at his father.
* UnknownRival: To Victor, to the point of delusion. Victor isn't actually sure what's J.J.'s name even stands for, while J.J. thinks Victor left the competition because he was afraid of facing him.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Due to his height and build, he looks older than 23 year-old Yuri or 20 year-old Phichit, who can still pass off as teenagers.

An 18-year-old skater from the Czech Republic. He won the bronze medal at Skate Canada. He does extreme sports in the off season and is noted for his quads.
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: It seems that he is hitting on both Michele and Sara simultaneously in some of his interactions with them.
* TheCameo: He briefly appears on the image of the winners of Skate Canada.
* CuddleBug: Implied, seeing as he's the only one who's okay with Yuri randomly hugging him after the latter [[spoiler:goes around glomping everyone after being starved for affection due to Victor's absence]]. In fact, he's the only one who hugs him ''back.''
* {{Cyberpunk}}: Invoked, his theme is "Cyberpunk: I am No Longer Human".
* FanOfTheUnderdog: In the Grand Prix Finals, he loudly cheers Yuri on during the latter's short program.
* GracefulLoser: Even though [[spoiler: he doesn't qualify for the Grand Prix Finals, he doesn't seem to be upset about it]].
* MySisterIsOffLimits: A victim of it, as Michele is always protecting Sara. He seems to later ask [[AmbiguouslyBi Michele to go with them as well.]]
* NiceGuy: He has a very friendly disposition, and doesn't antagonize anyone.
* OutOfFocus: On the Rostelecom Cup, we don't even get to see his short program.
* ThrillSeeker: He does extreme sports in his free time, which drives his coach nuts.
* TronLines: His costume for his free program incorporates these, fitting the {{Cyberpunk}} theme of the program. The "glow" effect is replaced by tiny crystals that reflect the light from the rink.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Does he look 18 to you?

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/WataruHatano (Japanese), David Trosko (English)

A 25-year-old skater from Russia with an intense personality. After being dumped by his girlfriend, he focused his anger on his theme for skating: "Heartbreak". With Victor out of the picture, he is now the current top Russian skater.
----
* AlwaysSecondBest: He was second to Victor during their time in Russia.
* BrokenTears: He cries in the middle of his routine thinking of his ex.
* CharacterDevelopment: In Episode 10, [[spoiler: he is shown in a date with another girl, implying he is finally over Anya and ready to date again]].
* CynicismCatalyst: His break up and subsequently, his ex-girlfriend's engagement to her new boyfriend leads him to stop believing in love.
* DarkIsEvil: Invoked; his short program is based on him playing as the witch of ''The Sleeping Beauty'', Carabosse. Fittingly, his costume for his short program is a very dark outfit.
* DesignatedVillain: In-universe, Guang-Hong uses him to represent the villain in his mental image of his performance.
* EvilSoundsDeep: He has quite the deep voice, which comes handy during his short program as he is taking the role of a WickedWitch.
* GreenEyedMonster: He relishes in the fact that Victor's career switch to coaching means that he is now the best skater on the Russian team.
* {{Guyliner}}: The only skater to use this in the China Cup.
* HeartbrokenBadass: His excellent performance in the China Cup comes from the fact that his girlfriend had recently dumped him. Taken even further when in Episode 7, it's revealed the girl is engaged to her new boyfriend. [[spoiler: As of Episode 10, however, he seems to have moved on after he is seen on a date with a blonde woman near the end of the episode]].
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: His short program has him playing the female witch Carabosse.
* LightIsGood: Invoked as well. In his free program, he wears light blue colors, since he is no longer playing the witch, but the prince.
* NotGoodWithRejection: He hasn't taken being dumped by his ex-girlfriend well at all, to the point that his theme for the season is "heartbreak" and he channels all of his rage about the breakup into his routine in Episode 6.
* SignificantBirthDate: His is December 26th, trailing behind the noise and excitement of Christmas Day... which is Victor's birthday. Even Georgi's birthday is behind Victor's shadow.

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/christophe.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/HirokiYasumoto (Japanese), Creator/ChristopherSabat (English)

A 25-year-old figure skater from Switzerland. His presence on stage is marked by his sex appeal.
----
* AlwaysSecondBest: He's a really good skater, although not as good as Victor, whom he wishes to beat. The announcers even state that while he is always one of the finalists in any tournament, he never once ''won'' any competition, due to Victor's presence.
* AmbiguouslyGay: His introduction has him grab Yuri's ass with absolutely no shame [[spoiler:which likely has something to do with how Yuri pole danced with him while drunk at last year's banquet]], and in Episode 11 he's implied to be in a relationship with an unnamed man.
* CarpetOfVirility: Downplayed; if you look closely during the scenes where he's shirtless or his chest is exposed, you can see that he has a bit of chest hair.
* ChallengeSeeker: Downplayed, but he only gets fired up once he has someone to compete against. This used to be Victor; now it's Yuri.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: He seems to be actually climaxing in the end of his routine in Episode 6, even moaning. It happens ''again'' during his routine in the very next episode!
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His first appearance has him smoothly grabbing Yuri's ass and whispering in his ear about Victor.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: After his free program in Episode 12, it can be seen that even men are enamored by his charms when he winks and says "Merci," to Minako.
* FemaleGaze: There are at least three moments when the camera focuses on his ass during his short program.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Victor, whom he has a StrangeMindsThinkAlike situation. They get along well, and Christophe says he's motivated to do better because of Victor.
* InSeriesNickname: Other characters shorten his name to Chris.
* KindHeartedCatLover: He is seen in an Instagram photo with a cat in the ending, and the same cat turns out to be his in Episode 11, which he seems to be very fond of. He is also quite the MellowFellow and is pretty nice.
* {{Megane}}: He seems to use glasses at home.
* MellowFellow: Always happy, calm and friendly, although sometimes he does get a bit ''too'' friendly.
* MrFanservice: Both in and out-universe, he is quite good looking, has a nice, deep voice, and a lot of shots of the anime is focused on his ass. He also pole danced while only in his underwear [[spoiler:along with a very drunk Yuri]] at the previous year's Grand Prix Finals banquet.
* MultiColoredHair: His hair is blond on top and brown on the sides.
* OnlyFriend: There are implications that he is this to Victor, from the way Victor talks about him.
* SignificantBirthDate: As the most overtly sexual and flirtatious member of the cast, it's appropriate that Christophe's birthday is on February 14th (Valentine's Day).
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: With Victor, with whom he shares a lot of moments in Episode 10. The fact that both are oddballs and are very open about their sexuality makes them get along very well.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: How Christophe feels after watching Yuri's performance.
-->'''Christophe's inner monologue:''' Yuri, your innocent sex appeal is a violent force. I'm the only one in the world who can win against that.
* TheRival: To Victor, previously, but now he is going after Yuri.
* SexSells: He oozes sex appeal on stage.
* ShipperOnDeck: [[spoiler: When Phichit loudly announces that Yuri and Victor are engaged, he looks amused and thrilled]].
* SignatureMove: The announcers state that the quadruple Lutz is his.
* SpeechImpediment: In the English dub, he has a rather noticeable lisp.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Lampshaded by Victor that when they first met; Christophe looked sweet and cute, but developed into a sexy beast. He's still a NiceGuy through and through.

A 20-year-old figure skater hailing from South Korea. He is notable for not including fanservice in his routines, and has no sense of fashion off the ice.
----
* BigOlEyebrows: His eyebrows are rather thick.
* BrutalHonesty: He has a very sharp tongue, which is seen in him directly telling Sara that he finds no benefit in being friendly to her. However, he is far from malicious.
* CryCute: He acts like nothing ever fazes him, but he cries when [[spoiler: he fails to qualify for the Grand Prix Finals]], showing that he is not as cold as he seems.
* TheDitz: Off the ice, he is noted for being prone to zoning out and being a general airhead.
* HeManWomanHater: Downplayed; he is noted for having an extreme aversion to women.
* NoSocialSkills: It comes with his BrutalHonesty.
* NotSoStoic: Though he hardly shows any emotions most of the time, he cries after [[spoiler:losing the chance to go to the Grand Prix Finals]] and he looks rather uncomfortable when Yuri hugs him later on.
* SignatureMove: The quadruple loop, which only he and Emil had succeeded in pulling off.
* TheSmartGuy: While skating, he can calculate in his head how much points he would be receiving from landing or missing jumps and the like.
* TheStoic: His facial expression hardly ever changes, even during his routines.

[[folder: Michele Crispino]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/michele.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/TomoakiMaeno (Japanese), Creator/JMichaelTatum (English)

A 22-year-old Italian figure skater with a highly uptight, straight-laced personality. He was fifth at the previous season's Grand Prix Final. He's very close to, and protective of, his twin sister Sara.
----
* BerserkButton: If you're a man who even so much as ''looks'' at Sara, expect him to immediately become hostile.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He's very protective of his sister, stemming from when boys used to bully her when they were younger. They're almost always together. However, the trope is deconstructed due to his protective instincts towards her veering very close to being possessive.
* {{Foil}}: To Yuri. Both emotionally depend on and are motivated by other people to skate -- Victor in Yuri's case, Sara in Michele's case. However, Yuri's relationship with Victor allows him to draw strength from himself and grow, while Michele's relationship with Sara is possessive and limiting.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: He supports Yuri just as much as the other figure skaters do, even shedding tears after Yuri's free skate.
* FunnyForeigner: Particularly in the English dub, where he has a rather strong Italian accent, making his interactions with Emil even more hilarious.
* InSeriesNickname: His sister and Emil call him "Mickey".
* KnightInShiningArmor: He invokes this image during his short program, with his outfit resembling medieval armor. This is due to how he views himself as his sister's "knight in shining armor".
* LatinLover: Subverted. As long as he keeps his mouth shut, he looks like your stereotypical TallDarkAndHandsome Italian man, but he is uptight and not at all interested in sex or romance.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: He and his sister go everywhere together, he's hostile towards any man who tries to get close to her, he always needs her there during his performances, and his monologue during his routine is about how talented she is and how nothing can tear them apart. Sara, for her part, recognizes how dependent Michele is on her and acknowledges that they need distance.

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sara_crispino_5.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by''': Marika Minase (Japanese), Creator/TiaBallard (English)

A 22-year-old figure skater from Italy, ranked fourth globally in ladies' singles. She's Michele's younger twin sister.
----
* CruelToBeKind: Before Michele's free program, Sara coldly tells her brother that she doesn't need him to succeed, and he shouldn't need her either. She does this because she believes his dependency on her is holding him back, and wants him to become stronger. [[spoiler:Michele proves her right by delivering a phenomenal performance without her support.]]
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: Her hair color was changed from brown to black late into production, so early merchandising, magazine spreads, and even the closing credits show her with chestnut hair.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: While she supports her brother first and foremost, she also unconditionally supports Yuri during the Rostelecom Cup, and is the only one to do so considering almost nobody else pays Yuri any attention.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Mila, who she seems on good terms with; they commentate on the Rostelecom Cup and the Finals together.
* HalfIdenticalTwins: Averted, she's visibly shorter than her brother with darker hair, although [[EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference they changed her hair color late into production]] and she would have shared Michele's hair color otherwise.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Michele isn't really sure how to function without her around. She is well-aware of this, and wishes to change it.
* NiceGirl: She is the only skater who doesn't snub Yuri when he's in Russia, properly greeting him with a smile when they encounter each other in the hotel. She even congratulates him for [[spoiler: qualifying for the Grand Prix Finals]].
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: She, along with Mila, got to participate in the Women's Grand Prix Final, but we never saw her skating.
* SignatureMove: A combination jump consisting of a triple Lutz followed by a triple loop. She and her brother are the only active skaters capable of pulling it off in competition.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The Crunchyroll subs write her name as "Sala".
* WomenAreWiser: She seems more down to earth than Michele and is aware that even as brother and sister, they need some distance, and he needs to be able to perform without her around.

Yuri's {{childhood friend}}s who operate the local skating rink and their mischievous little triplets.
----
[[AC: Tropes that apply to Yuko and Takeshi]]

* AmbiguouslyBi: Takeshi is HappilyMarried to Yuko, but he's still not ashamed to admit that Yuri can be sexy when skating.
* AudienceSurrogate: Even though she's married, Yuko serves as a pretty decent one since she ogles and nosebleeds over the very attractive skaters in the story.
* ChildhoodFriends: Yuko and Yuri were this pretty much out of the starting gate, but it took a while for Takeshi to warm up to him, since he bullied him when he first came to the skating rink.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Yuko and Takeshi had known each other since childhood, when they were rinkmates.
* {{Fangirl}}: Yuko is a huge one for Victor, and has been one since childhood.
* InSeriesNickname: Yuko used to be known as "the Madonna of Hasetsu Ice Castle" when she was younger, due to her figure skating skills.
* MumLooksLikeASister: You'd be forgiven for thinking Yuko was the triplets' older sister rather than their mother. Justified since she really was fairly young when she had them (she's 25 and the triplets are 6, meaning she would have given birth to them when she was 19).
* NiceGirl: Yuko has always been kind and supportive towards Yuri ever since they were children, and she's pretty nice in general. However, her patience can wear thin when dealing with her figure skater-obsessed daughters.
* {{Nosebleed}}: Poor Yuko bleeds herself unconscious while watching Victor's demonstration of the ''Eros'' program. A bit later, she gets another nosebleed when she sees Yurio dressed in a see-through outfit.
* {{Otaku}}: Yuko may not be quite as obsessive over the figure skating world as the triplets, but the fact that her daughters are named after skating jumps and her fangirling over Victor definitely says something.
* ReformedBully: Takeshi used to pick on Yuri, but is now one of his closest friends.
* SurprisinglyGoodEnglish: Yuko's text to Yurio was sent in fluent English.

[[AC: Tropes that apply to Axel, Lutz, and Loop]]

* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: Though fraternal triplets are almost unheard of.
* BlushStickers: Being kids, they have these almost constantly.
* BrattyHalfPint: ''All'' of them. They were the ones who uploaded the video of Yuri performing Victor's routine to the internet, and they used Yuko's Youtube account to upload it without her permission -- which she reprimands them for later, and apparently this isn't the first time they've done this behind her back.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Axel wears purple, Lutz wears blue, and Loop wears pink.
* DirtyKid: The triplets have shades of this. They mention that there's going to be a "boob flash" in the preview for Episode 2, and in Episode 8 they comment on Seung-Gil's sex appeal.
* {{Fangirl}}: The triplets are this to both Victor and Yuri.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Aside from their [[ColorCodedCharacters differently-colored oufits]], the triplets' hairstyles serve as this; Axel has GirlishPigtails, Lutz wears her hair in a bun, and Loop has a ponytail that sticks straight up.
* {{Otaku}}: The triplets are a bit too young to do any skating themselves, so they're relegated to obsessing over the skating world.
* SameSexTriplets: The girls are identical, so it's a given.
* SingleMindedTwins: Or Single Minded Triplets in this case. Though there are [[IdenticalTwinIDTag ways to tell them apart in appearance]], personality-wise all three are mischievous figure skating fangirls.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: The triplets provide exposition and can often be a source of comic relief, but they are relatively minor characters. However, had it not been for them recording Yuri's reenactment of Victor's program and uploading it online, the entire plot would have never happened. This applies even [[spoiler: after TheReveal in Episode 10]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: The triplets all have their mother's hair and skin tone, but they have their father's facial features (namely his pudgy face, small eyes and slanted eyebrows).
* ThemeTwinNaming: Theme Triplet Naming, rather. They're named after the most important skating jumps: the axel jump, the lutz jump and the loop jump. Their names are all written in kanji despite being non-Japanese terms, which makes it likely that they're meant to be [[http://akihabaranews.com/2013/08/12/article-en/kira-kira-names-shiny-names-kids-chagrin-many-japan-1701127852 "kira kira names"]].
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: These three little weasels are far smarter than any 6-year-old ought to be, and they have a surprisingly comprehensive knowledge of how figure skating competitions work.

* EatingTheEyeCandy: She's ''very'' into Christophe's sensual performance in Episode 6.
* {{Fangirl}}: To Christophe.
* GenkiGirl: Despite being an adult in her fifties, she's very energetic and enthusiastic, often striking ballet poses.
* GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: She looks younger than Yuri's sister, but is older than his mother, who's 49.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Minako is good friends with Yuri's older sister Mari, whom she calls "Mari-chan".
* TheMentor: To Yuri, before Victor and Celestino came along. In fact, she was the one who encouraged Yuri to get into ice skating in the first place.
* MrsRobinson: The skaters she fangirls about are young enough to be her sons.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She's one of the few named characters whose exact age hasn't been revealed, but WordOfGod has stated that she's older than Yuri's mother Hiroko (who's 49), which would put her in her ''fifties''. Despite that, she looks as young as Yuri's sister Mari.
* RetiredBadass: She was a prima ballerina who was recognized internationally, and there's a photo of her receiving the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prix_Benois_de_la_Danse Benois de la Danse]] award, one of the highest honors in the ballet world.

* CoolOldGuy: He is stern, but he helps Victor with Yuri as soon as [[spoiler:Victor has to go back to Japan]].
* FunnyForeigner: Definitely fits this, based on his reactions to Victor's behavior.
* TheMentor: To the Russian skaters of the show. As far as coaching goes, Victor still seems to look up to him.
* OnlySaneMan: Between Georgi's heartbreak, Yurio's explosive temper, Mila's teasing and Victor's whimsical nature, he becomes this and keeps everybody on tracks.
* SternTeacher: He tends to go on long, angry lectures even in the kiss-and-cry. His criticism is always fair though, and he doesn't expect his students to follow all of his directions to a T.

* FullNameUltimatum: She uses it with Yurio when she catches him about to yell a swearword to his fans. He obediently shuts up and proceeds to humor the girls for a while.
* MistakenForRomance: Lilia wants to make it clear that the fact she is going to live with Yakov, it's for Yurio's sake and she has no interest in getting back together with him. He seems to not have expected them to get back together either.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: She's largely based off the famous Bolshoi prima [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Plisetskaya Maya Plisetskaya]], both in appearance and in character.
* PrimAndProperBun: She always wears her hair in a ballet bun that is as neat as the rest of her.

* ForWantOfANail: If he hadn't dragged Yuri to a banquet that Yuri ''really'' didn't want to go to, [[spoiler: Yuri and Victor would never have met -- at least, not properly -- and]] the story would never have happened.
* FunnyForeigner: In-universe, Phichit finds him to be one, calling him "Ciao Ciao" after his catchphrase.
* GratuitousItalian: Being Italian-American, he's prone to this, to the point that Phichit calls him "Ciao Ciao".
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Celestino is shown as a rather sweet and supportive coach. Not only is he shown to be kind and friendly with Phichit, but he's shown comforting Yuri after his disastrous GP performance, doesn't appear to hold a grudge over Yuri terminating his contract with him, and is even happy to help Yuri and Victor out as they blunder their way through their own coach-and-skater relationship. That said, he insists that the devastated Yuri do his duty and attend a banquet he's not really up to, he works Phichit hard and he's not beyond using his prior knowledge of Yuri's weaknesses to bolster Phichit's chances of success -- at the end of the day, he's got a job to do.

* FamilyEyeResemblance: Yurio looks nothing like him, expect for his green eyes.
* MoralityPet: He brings out the sweeter and more cheerful side of Yurio.
* ParentalSubstitute: Appears to be this to Yurio, since a flashback implies that Yurio's mother wasn't much of a presence in his life.

* DogStereotype: Aside from being a bit spoiled (Victor does let him sleep in his bed), he averts pretty much every poodle stereotype; he's a standard poodle whose hair grows out naturally, and acts like a BigFriendlyDog rather than your typical MisterMuffykins.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Her first scene has her make of fun of Yurio's fangirls. However, she proves to be genuinely in love with J.J. [[spoiler:when she leads his fans in cheering for him even after he bombs his short program in the Grand Prix Finals.]]
* MultiethnicName: Her first name is Italian and her last name is a common family name in both China and Korea, meaning she's at least part Asian.

to:

* {{Adorkable}}: He's anxious and insecure, but he's still one of the most-- if not ''the'' most adorable character in the entire series.
Characters/YuriOnIceMainCharacters
* AmbiguousDisorder: It's strongly implied that he has some kind of anxiety disorder, which doesn't help his already low self-esteem.
Characters/YuriOnIceOtherIceSkaters
* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:With Victor, in Episode 7.]]
* FatalFlaw:
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed:
* PersonalityBloodTypes: Type A.
* WorthyOpponent:

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/JunichiSuwabe (Japanese), Creator/JerryJewell (English)

* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:With Yuri, in Episode 7.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
* TheMentor: To Yuri.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
* RunningGag:
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike:

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KoukiUchiyama (Japanese), Creator/MicahSolusod (English)

* InSeriesNickname: He has several:
* KickTheDog:

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mila_babicheva_7.jpg]]

[[folder:Phichit Chulanont]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phichit_6.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KenshoOno (Japanese), Creator/JoelMcDonald (English)

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/AyumuMurase (Japanese), Creator/TrinaNishimura (English)

[[folder:Leo de la Iglesia]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leo_59.png]]

* MixedAncestry: He's Mexican-American.
* {{Spexico}}: A minor one. The surname "de la Iglesia" is common enough in Spain, but it can sound odd to Mexican audiences.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Otabek Altin]]
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otabek.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/YoshimasaHosoya (Japanese)

* TheComicallySerious:

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guanghong_2.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Yutaro Honjo (Japanese), Howard Wang (English)

A 17-year-old Chinese skater, competing in the China Cup and the winner of the bronze medal on the Skate America.
----
* {{Adorkable}}
[[/folder]]

* InSeriesNickname: J.J.
* ItsAllAboutMe

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/HirokiYasumoto (Japanese), Creator/ChristopherSabat (English)

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/TomoakiMaeno (Japanese), Creator/JMichaelTatum (English)

That said, he insists that the devastated Yuri do his duty and attend a banquet he's not really up to, he works Phichit hard and he's not beyond using his prior knowledge of Yuri's weaknesses to bolster Phichit's chances of success -- at the end of the day, he's got a job to do.

* PeekABangs: His hairstyle covers his left eye. He seems to fit the "deception or concealment" type, since his hair fully covers his eye when he's being insincere, but it parts to reveal his eye when he's being honest. However, it turns out that he's not as deceptive as early episodes make him out to be, [[spoiler:as he has no ulterior motives for becoming Yuri's coach]].

* YouAreFat: He tends to resort to this kind of insult when confronting Yuri, often calling him fat, a pig, [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs or a fat pig]]. However, Yuri isn't at all affected by these insults and just shrugs them off, since by then he's already gotten back in shape in Episode 2. This is meant to highlight how petty and immature Yurio is being, especially when [[NeverLiveItDown he still continues with the insult in the following episodes]].

* StepfordSmiler: [[TheWoobie Painfully so]]. He's the depressed type, and desperately tries to hide how broken he actually feels from the people around him.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Determinator}}: Curiously enough, not really with regard to his own skating, although he may have been this when he was younger. Instead, he meets the criteria when it comes to [[spoiler:his love life. He became infatuated with a young man from another country (Yuri), risked his whole career to keep his promise to coach said man, upped sticks and moved his whole life to Japan, and spent the next six months or so pursuing Yuri romantically while also getting him in shape for the Grand Prix]]. He's also very much a Determinator when it comes to ''Yuri's'' career.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Determinator}}: His training regimen in brutal, and he's only fifteen. Nonetheless, he's prepared to do what it takes to win gold at the Grand Prix Final. When the final itself rolls around, he finds even ''more'' determination to win, becoming hell-bent on getting the gold [[spoiler:in order to prevent Yuri Katsuki, who was in first place, from retiring]].

* DissonantSerenity: In probably the creepiest scene in the show, when Victor [[spoiler: [[CryCute bursts into tears]] after Yuri proclaims he's retiring during the Grand Prix Finals]], Yuri's reaction is to calmly reach out and pull back Victor's hair so he can watch him [[spoiler: cry more closely]], and basically say with with little tone or inflection, [[spoiler: [[LackOfEmpathy "Oh, so you are crying]]."]]
