* HeroAntagonist: Despite being the supposed antagonist, Courtney's deeds throughout the story actually comes off more heroic.
* InsufferableGenius / SmugSnake: Especially in the TV episode, where she mocks the protagonists for trying to scare her and actually ''[[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath talks the monster to death]]''. The SmugSnake part might be subverted since ultimately nothing blows up in her face and even when she finally ''does'' get scared at being terrorized by the monsters, she ''still'' comes out on top by gaining more popularity from telling of her experience.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She makes fun of Eddie on the field trip, but also saves him from a snake, offers to share her lunch with a teacher and rescues a neighbor's cat from a tree.

!! Eddie

-> Portrayed By: Kiel Campbell ([[Series/{{Goosebumps}} TV]])

The main protagonist. He and his friend, Hat, want to pull a prank on Courtney. But they fail constantly throughout.
----
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He is beyond desperate to scare Courtney for one. But when it finally happens, it involves actual mud monsters that nearly kill them. Eddie even lampshades that as he watches Courtney scream, this moment that he was waiting for wasn't quite how he wanted it to be.
* {{Determinator}}: He is absolutely ADAMANT to get back at Courtney almost to any extent. He put a real-looking rubber snake in her lunchbox, tried to drop tarantulas on her head, tried to send an aggressive dog her way, and finally have Kevin and his high school friends scare her by dressing up as mud monsters.
* DirtyCoward: When his worried neighbor asks him to help her get her cat out of a tree, he selfishly does not because he says he's afraid of heights.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Yes, Courtney humiliated him and Hat by throwing a couple of bees at them in front of many other students, but that was a one-time prank that she quickly got over. But because of this incident, this triggers Eddie's intent to get revenge on her through various and rediculous methods.
* EmbarrassingNickname: His brother, Kevin, likes to call him "Bugs" after Bugs Bunny, because of his large two front teeth.
* GreenEyedMonster: Part of why Eddie hates Courtney so much is out of envy over the fact that she's so popular and TheAce at almost everything coming her way.
* IrrationalHatred: He and Hat really despise Courtney just because they view her as a snotty popular girl, even though she really isn't. This is worse in the TV episode, in which they torment her with pranks even though she never did anything wrong to them or anybody.
* {{Jerkass}}: He is clear example of this. Eddie is very rude most of the time and delves into malicious mischief.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: When he realizes that Courtney and Denise are in actual danger with the mud monsters, he risks the entire operation to save them.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Hat and him steal tarantulas from the school science lab and throw them from a gym terrace onto a couple of students. They are immediately then caught by their teacher, who makes them clean the science lab after school and write essays on why their behavior was wrong.
* NotSoSimilar: He is this with Herb, who [[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname goes by the name Hat]] because he [[NeverBareheaded almost never takes off his hat]] [[PleaseKeepYourHatOn which hides his nauseating hair inside]]. While Hat tends to be mischievous, he isn't extreme about as Eddie is.
* OnlyOneName: He never reveals what his surname is. In fact, he doesn't reveal anybody else's surname, either.
* RaceLift: In the TV episode, he is portrayed by an actor who's probably Hispanic.
* RedheadsAreUncool: He has red hair, and he is an obnoxious loser who isn't popular at school.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: He is so set on pranking Courtney that, at one point, he was willing to sic a vicious dog on her.
* UngratefulBastard: Courtney saves him from a snake on a field trip (and a tarantula while in the closet in the TV episode). This does not make him change his mind about her, thinking that she just did that for attention.
* UnreliableNarrator: He portrays him and Hat as the heroes of the story. When in reality, they are anything but.
* VillainProtagonist: He spends the whole book harassing Courtney with pranks for mostly no good reason, and doesn't show any remorse for any of it.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: He is hiding in the bushes as part of a mud monster prank to scare Courtney and her best friend, Denise, and is initially impressed with the mud monsters that appear around them. But then Kevin arrives saying that he his friends got a flat tire and can't come, which means that [[OhCrap these mud monsters around them right now are real]]. This causes Eddie to give up on pranking Courtney and comes out of his hiding place, telling them to run away in concern for her safety.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: He hates the fact that Kevin picks and pulls pranks on him, despite the fact that he enjoys doing the same thing with Courtney.

!! Courtney King

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/courtgbumps.png]]

-> '''Portrayed By:''' Charlotte Sullivan ([[Series/{{Goosebumps}} TV]])

A popular, smart girl who is seemingly not afraid of anything, but is very gullible when it comes to local legends about Mud Monsters.
----
* TheAce: And ''how''!
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the book, she threw bees at Eddie in the field trip, while in the TV episode, she did nothing to him and he decided to scare her when she never did anything to him. In ''VideoGame/GoosebumpsHorrorTown'', she is a lot less smug to others about how brave she is.
* AlphaBitch: She's popular, good-looking, and virtually nothing can faze her.
* AntiVillain: She may have been a bit rude to Eddie and his friend, Hat, but all she really did was humiliate them once by throwing a couple of bees at them and she gets over it. However, Eddie views this as her being a bully, and seeks revenge against her no matter what it takes.
* TheCloudcuckoolanderWasRight: She believes that the mud monsters in her town are real. And even though her enemies are planning a prank on her with fake ones, it isn't far until they found out that there are REAL ones.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: You'd think Eddie and his friends would realize that she's not scared of animals when she tames bees, spiders and rabid dogs.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Has blonde hair and, while a bit insensitive at first, is shown to be a caring and considerate person.
* LovableAlphaBitch: She's not too bad of a person once you get past her irritating smugness.
* MeaningfulName: Her last name is "King", and she is TheAce in almost everything.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Her surname isn't revealed in the book, but is stated in the TV version.
* NervesOfSteel: She isn't afraid of a real-looking rubber snake in her lunch bag, tarantulas falling right next to her, a rabid dog, and (in the television episode) [[spoiler: a mud monster.]] No wonder the book is titled "You Can't Scare Me!"
* NiceGirl: Aside from her tendency to condescend to Eddie, she's rather kind.
* ParodySue: Her ability to excel in everything she ever attempts seems deliberate just for the sake of having Eddie and his friends hate her.
* TheStoic: She acts this way in ''Goosebumps Horrortown''.

!! Mud Monsters

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mudmonsters.jpg]]

-> '''Portrayed By:''' Garry Robbins ([[Series/{{Goosebumps}} TV]])

The Mud Monsters are zombies who live in the depths of Muddy Creek. Once a year they rise out of the creek to search for victims to drag back with them into the mud.
----
* CoveredInMud: They ''are'' mud.
* FlatCharacter: Despite being the book's featured monsters, they don't actually show up until the climax at the swamp and are pretty much shambling brutes with no apparent sentience. Of course, a centuries old mass of earth wouldn't exactly have a vibrant personality.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: At this point, they're basically half human, half mud.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: In the TV show, Courtney does this by going on a rant towards the Mud Monster in order to stall it long enough for it to dry out in the hot sun.
* TragicMonster: They were originally poor settlers forced to live in huts alongside Muddy Creek because the richer citizens of the nearby village wanted nothing to do with them. On the night of a violent storm, the creek was flooded, washed the village away, and the settlers drowned to death.
