* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Zig-zagged. His passive yet understanding presence in Paraiso implies that he is this for Tsurumaru, but how it actually does to help him is ambiguous, since Tsurumaru not only becomes increasingly unstable over the course of the play even with Ookurikara there, and later shows up in Michi no Oku no different than how he was in Paraiso, but he is also helpless to stop Tsurumaru from self-harming by taking on more responsibility than his mental state can handle, only being able to literally give him a shoulder to lean on at the end of the play.

* BrokenTears: [[spoiler: In ''Paraiso'', he breaks down after witnessing the death of the young boy and receiving one final harsh reminder that this is the cost of protecting history]].

* DrivenToSuicide: In the musicals, [[spoiler:his guilt and inner conflict about his role in the Shimabara Rebellion reaches a breaking point when rather than kill some rebels to preserve history, he stops fighting in the middle of battle and allows them to strike him instead, fully intending to die by their blades. Fortunately, it becomes an InterruptedSuicide when Buzen dashes in and saves him.]]

* EveryoneHasStandards: He's a bit of a weirdo who has an obsession with spilling blood, but never the blood of his friends or of innocents.

* FullNameBasis: In TheMusical, he exclusively refers to Tsurumaru Kuninaga by his full name, no matter the context.
* HiddenDepths: As literally bloodthirsty as he is, he doesn't want to shed the blood of companions, and only likes his own or enemies' blood. He's also heavily traumatized by his role in the Shimabari Rebellion, in which he was used to massacre potentially thousands of innocent women and children. It's implied that his masochism stems from believing that he needs to shed his own blood as penance for the innocent lives he took.

* {{Irony}}: The closest ''Touken Ranbu'' has gotten to a real cat boy, but it took quite a few rounds for him to be given an official ''Tounyan Ranbu'' design, a merch series which sees all of the Touken Danshi transformed into actual cat boys, because he was saved for the Ichimonji group release.

* AloofAlly: In the play ''Kousui''. He dislikes Ookanehira and doesn't take his designated position as leader seriously because of his inexperience, and thus goes his own way for the majority of the play to watch over Li Naosuke whether it's beneficial to the mission or not.

* DumbBlonde: He toes the line of being a RareMaleExample in the play ''Kousui'' due to his major lack of situational awareness.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Competes with Samidare as the most eccentric of the Gou because of his obsession with nature and belief that he can communicate with the earth.

This led to his character not being able to have a major role in the same ''Musical Touken Ranbu'' special that introduced Matsui. His planned role was cut down to just an appearance at the curtain call because the costumers couldn't figure out how to make the wig see-through in time.

* OneSteveLimit: Averted. He and the real Yamanbagiri have the same first name but different last names. The fandom gets around this by referring to him as "Yamanbagiri," while the real Yamanbagiri is called "Chougi," his last name, with the reason being that the "fake" Yamanbagiri predates Chougi in ''Touken Ranbu'' by more than 3 years and was known to the fandom as "Yamanbagiri" for a longer period of time. This is also how the characters refer to the two in the adaptations, although whether Chougi takes issue with it has yet to be see.
