* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He considers all smallfolk as citizens, nackie and Norsemen alike--when five of them are killed along with the Anglish Hakan Gilvertsson in a fight, he speaks of all six of the dead as his citizens. When Anequs speaks up to ask a question of the council--even after being warned ''not'' to speak unless spoken to by Frau Kuiper--he laughs and then tells her to go ahead. Then, when Anequs then asks Thane Stafn if the Anglish plan to [[ArmorPiercingQuestion provoke the Masquisit to violence]] the way they did the Naquisit in 1825--and he loses his temper in the process--Jarl Joervasson says to Frau Kuiper that he likes Anequs; she's got fire. He also calls out the thanes for their lax and appalling behavior that's led to the situations that have occurred (including neglecting the peoples of Mask and Nack Island and Thane Stafn for his editorial letter that he didn't approve of) and openly confronts them all, saying the prior jarl let them rule their thedes as if they were jarls themselves. When her mother states that Lisbet will never marry properly if Sander can't make a decent presentation, Lisbet snaps back that she won't marry ''any'' man who says awful things about her younger brother.

This is followed by asking Anequs if Vastergot is a grand city to her since she's lived in "a little bark house" her whole life. She wants to be a dragoneer like Anequs, despite it being a very long shot.

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Before Frau Kuiper can introduce any of the other members of staff at Kuiper's to Anequs, he demands to know how she came to possess Kasaqua. He then calls Anequs impudent for saying that she doesn't "own" her dragon, and when Frau Kuiper cuts him off and they have a silent stand off about it Anequs realizes that the two have a well-established rivalry that she's walked in the middle of.
