* ReiAyanamiExpy: Downplayed. Similar to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Rei]], Hunter is the latest in a line of red-eyed clones of the OmnicidalManiac BigBad's deceased loved one. Unlike Gendo with Rei, however, Phillip has no genuine love for him whatsoever.

* ForcedTransformation: In "Clouds on the Horizon", Gus casts an illusion without Hunter's knowledge to change him into Luz while she acts as a BodyDouble. He only realizes what's happened when Kikimora captures and presents the disguised Luz to the group before fleeing, prompting Hunter to look down at his hands and discover his new appearance. However, the illusion dissipates soon after.

* DoppelgangerGetsSameSentiment: Implied. It's hinted in "Yesterday's Lie" that Flapjack's original owner was the elder Wittebane brother, which would suggest that they bonded with Hunter in part because they recognize him as their clone.

* CommendedForPushback: In "Any Sport For A Storm", he starts to grow past his BlindObedience nature and defies [[GoodAllAlong Coven Head Darius]], stopping his new friends from being taken as recruits for the Emperor's Coven. Darius turns out to be very pleased by this, having wanted Hunter to stand up for himself for some time.

** During the TimePassesMontage of "Thanks To Them", Hunter sees flashes of both Caleb and Belos staring back at him when he looks in the mirror, as he now bears a greater resemblance to both of them after growing his hair out. This startles him so badly he leaps backwards and ends up in a heap on the floor, and Willow soon catches him frantically chopping his own hair off with kitchen scissors.

* BladeOnAStick: Not the most traditional example, but Flapjack's crest is apparently sharp enough in staff form to cut through the string keeping the portal key around Amity's neck. Hunter also tends to use the staff itself as a melee weapon rather than solely using it for long range combat like most witches.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Amity gives Hunter a talk about how she learned she doesn't need to constantly prove herself and found people who love her unconditionally, in hopes of getting Hunter to give up on Belos and switch sides. Unfortunately, one small speech doesn't amount to much against a lifetime of abuse, and Hunter immediately attacks when he realizes she has the portal key.
** When viewing Belos's memories, Hunter continues justifying and making excuses for his uncle's horrific actions, until he learns that Belos never truly cared about him, and told him that he was special only to keep him in line. This is surprisingly accurate for a cult survivor -- people don't stay in cults because of the ideology, they stay because of the community and interpersonal connection. Hunter was willing to ignore his moral objections to the Emperor's Coven's actions because he saw Belos as his only family and believed he owed him for taking him in. Learning that all of that was a lie allowed Hunter to finally take off the rose-colored glasses and see the truth.
** Upon finding out he's only the latest in a long line of Grimwalkers, has been lied to all his life and that the emperor almost certainly wants his head, Hunter doesn't decide to turn against him in anger and stay with Luz, but has a highly realistic panic attack and runs off in terror.
*** He does not recover from this easily and has another panic attack later when some coven scouts try to bring him back to the emperor, knowing Belos wants to kill him. It's an understandable reaction to have if your father figure has decided he wants to murder you. Furthermore, he's left homeless with no place to go and not knowing anyone who can take him in, so he lives quite miserably in the closed down Hexside auditorium and survives off of junk food.
** Despite him revealing everything he knows concerning Belos' plans for the Day of Unity, Hunter has not told anyone he's a Grimwalker. While he clearly does care for his new friends, Hunter hasn't known them very long and is still processing some very heavy emotions. Thus, he decides to keep it to himself and can't be convinced by Luz to tell everyone.
** When Belos is splattered against a wall by The Collector, rather than be happy that his tormentor is dead, Hunter is horror-stricken and the only one who has difficulty running through Belos' remains as he's very clearly disturbed by it, requiring a second to gather up the courage to do it.

* GenerationXerox: Implied. Details regarding Caleb's life on the Boiling Isles are incredibly sparce, though there are several clues that hint at him having become a palisman carver (namely his talent for woodcarving and being an ancestor of the palisman carving Clawthorne family). Rather appropriately, this is the same career that Hunter pursues as an adult, with him even studying under one of Caleb's supposed descendants.

** Darius accuses him of being one in "Any Sport In A Storm", claiming he is unable to think for himself and only does what he is told. From what we have seen of his behavior, Darius might have a point.
** It gets darker when it's revealed that all the Grimwalkers before Hunter at some point turned on Belos and were killed for their betrayals. Belos states he's much more obedient than the other Golden Guards, implying one of his goals was to make a Grimwalker that would remain loyal.

* Nephewisim: Was taken in by his uncle Belos when thier family was wiped out by wild magic. This is subverted as "Hollow Mind" reveals he is actually a grimwalker, the latest in many created by Belos in attepts to recreate his brother Caleb as "a better version of an old friend".

* ButNotTooBi: Hunter was confirmed to be bisexual in a post-hoot, yet he never shows an interest in any male characters.

* GenerationXerox: Implied. Details regarding Caleb's life on the Boiling Isles are incredibly sparce, though there are several clues that hint at him having become a palisman carver (namely his talent for woodcarving and being AmbiguouslyRelated to the palisman carving Clawthorne family). Rather appropriately, this is the same career that Hunter pursues as an adult, with him even studying under one of Caleb's supposed descendants.

* OurHomunculiAreDifferent: Hunter is confirmed to be a Grimwalker in "Hollow Mind", meaning he's an ArtificialHuman clone of Belos's brother Caleb. He looks identical to any other witch from the outside save for his distinctive pink eyes, but his body is made of Palistrom wood, selkiedomus scales, a Galderstone, and one of Caleb's bones, and "For the Future" reveals that baby Grimwalkers are grown in the ground like plants, and signify that they're ready to be dug up by sticking a hand out of the soil.

* OurHomunculiAreDifferent: The ColdOpen of "Eclipse Lake" ''heavily'' implies that he is a kind of homunculus called a "grimwalker", more of an ArtificialHuman compared to the MuckMonster Abominations. "Hollow Mind" confirms that he is one, and is basically a clone of someone Belos knew.

* AmbiguouslyBi: While showing off a sweater he made, one of the patches has a rainbow in the colors of the bisexual pride flag.

* ReplacementGoldfish: In "Hollow Mind", we learn that he's only the latest in a ''long'' line of Grimwalkers Belos has created as "better versions of an old friend", implied to be his brother.

* DisneyDeath: In "Thanks to Them", Belos [[DemonicPossession possesses him and controls his body]], and once Hunter fights back and forces him out, this seems to drain all of his life force, with his friends frantically noting that he's not moving and completely unresponsive. However, an already-mortally-wounded Flapjack [[HeroicSacrifice gives his life to revive Hunter]].
