* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Due to his horrific childhood, all three of them, and his insanity, as the legal term, he knows the concepts of Right and Wrong exist but clearly has no understanding of them. As such, when he undertakes action, he doesn't consider the inherent morality, but goes almost purely by cost-benefit analysis, and as for personal relationships, he basically just pack-bonds to people who treat him nicely, and then extends the pack to people who treat them nicely. People who would harm the pack are a threat to be neutralized, and if they refuse to stop being a threat, destroyed. The fate of the pack takes priority over cost-benefit analysis, always.
** As a result of being raised by ghouls, who are stuck in resource poor Devil's Nests for reasons of biology and being unjustly hunted thanks to the Church of Alda spreading the lie that they are some kind of weird mutant undead, Van has come to the conclusion that anything edible must be eaten and genuinely doesn't understand religious or cultural taboos, like feeding the meat of Elder Collusus who side with Alda, and thus try to kill Titans, to Titans after the battle's won.

While this is not completely unheard of - Scylla are known to be edible must be eaten and genuinely doesn't understand religious or cultural taboos, like various races regularly harvest each other for alchemy ingredients - this extends to the point of feeding an Orbaume duke the meat corpse of Elder Collusus who side the God of Cannibalism and an Alda sided Colossus to Titan subspecies. Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

* KeystoneArmy: Discussed. A number of mortals and gods fear if Vandelieu dies, things could get very, ''very'' bad for his [[UpToEleven entire city-state]] of Talosheim. The very powerful undead among the citizens could suffer a DeathOfPersonality again and go on rampage, ghouls would lose the ability to reproduce safely and at a reasonable rate and the entire infrastructure of Talosheim would instantly collapse.

* CrazySane: The narration notes that he actually went mad at some point. He completely lost any aversion to murder and is obsessed with the idea of luxury, which (courtesy of his abusive family in his life as Amamiya) is actually quite modest and more focused on seeming rich than actually using his wealth.

He completely lost any aversion to murder and is obsessed with the idea of luxury, which (courtesy of his abusive family in his life as Amamiya) is actually quite modest and more focused on seeming rich than actually using his wealth. His behavior and decision making also hints at legal insanity, as in he can't be held accountable for his actions in court because of both being unable to tell right from wrong and showing an inability to control his actions. If he were on Earth, he couldn't be considered fit to stand trial nor sign any legal agreements.

** In Bellwood's dungeon, when Curatos pulls of his last, desperate gambit, Van questions Heinz why they waited so long to pull it off, because he's seen Heinz and Curatos chatting, but couldn't hear what they were saying, busy fighting random puppets Curatos threw his way. Heinz does not answer. After mulling it over for a while, Van comes to the conclusion that Heinz and Curatos waited until the most strategic moment to pull it off for maximum tactical advantage, since it's a tactic that's most effective the first time it's seen. At this point, Heinz tries to deny involvement, but Van doesn't believe him, as Heinz has a long, long history of trying to shift the blame for what he actually ''has'' done.

* EntertaininglyWrong: Played for laughs and played for drama. There are several situations where the way he misreads the premise fits perfectly with the information at hand, but is completely wrong due to lacking certain context.
** When he's up against Bugogan, it goes both ways. He launches his then mightiest attack at Bugogan only for the latter to defy it at tremendous effort, and Bugogan retaliates with his mightiest attack, just barely piercing his shield. Both of them are convinced the other has launched a probing attack and hasn't gotten serious yet, getting more and more desperate as the battle goes on, until Van's allies show up, at which point Van, not realizing he now has an overwhelming advantage, uses a near suicidal attack to trick Bugogan into killing himself.
** When Van meets Fang, he presumes the feral dog is giving him a "play bite" because the dog is a normal dog, if feral, and can't bite past his barriers. Fang, despite being a dog, realizes Van's not a threat and submits.
** Mane, the horse, feels as if Van is death itself and resigns to the inevitable. Van and the horse owner looking to sell the animal just presume the horse is being particularly obedient.
** Huf, also a horse, reacts to Van with terror and tries to stomp on Van's chest in a panic. Van presumes the horse is just playing "shake" because, again, it's a normal animal and can't get past Van's physical protection.

* ATrueHero: The primary reason he and Heinz always clash is not the latter's part in Darcia's death (though that is a very, very big factor), but their polar opposite "Hero" policies.
** Vandalieu cares far more about the result of his actions than the morality or his reputation. As such, even Heinz, once he learns of it, sees him as a "better" hero, despite Van's rather impressive set of crimes. Heinz is vexxed at this revelation.
** Heinz, on the other hand, cares far, far more about his reputation and self-righteous morality than the consequences, especially if he can somehow tell himself that he's not at fault for whatever goes wrong. Then he strives to leverage his reputation to get the result he wants. The outcome leaves much to be desired.

So he waits until he's strong enough and ''then'' kill him. Van also won't pursue vengeance if it will endanger his loved ones. When his spirit is brought to Earth by Zuruwarn to meet Earth's god, he had ample opportunity to curse his EvilUncle, evil aunt, and apathetic cousin for the crap they put him through, but passed it up when Zuruwarn informed him that it would tip off Rodcorte. I Ate What clean up. The trope is when a character eats something, unaware of what they are consuming, and then reacts in disgust after they find out what it is. Misuse will be deleted or moved to another trope when applicable. Administrivia.Zero Context Examples will be removed or commented out depending on the amount of context within the entry. Her normal hydra whose heads didn't have been replaced with complete brains in their head but rather nerve clusters used to distribute information processing while the true brain was at the base of the necks. This artifact of her original biology carries on: While she has humanoid torsos of beautiful women from different races. Certainly different from at the standard.ends of her neck stumps, the brains are not really active at the start of the story and thus she's still only as intelligent as a fairly smart animal despite being able to speak simple words and sing.
