* TheFaceless: He is always dressed in some kind of suit, such as an old-fashioned diving suit or a bear suit that fully covers his body, including his face. Even during a senate meeting in Altus, though he wasn't wearing a suit only the back of his chair and arms could be seen.

The anime just runs with it and brings more attention to the subtext by making the opening about Noé and Vanitas touring around Paris as if they were on a date and the ending frames them in a StarCrossedLovers fashion, unable to reach each other as a reminder that Noé's narration from the future states his journey with Vanitas ends in tragedy and he would kill Vanitas himself.

* NightAndDayDuo: Vanitas is associated with the night and the moon, being the dark and mysterious inheritor of the blue moon's power. Meanwhile, Noé represents the sun, having a bright and optimistic outlook that lets Vanitas see the light in the darkness.

* BeyondRedemption: Astolfo was utterly traumatized and broken by the vampires that murdered his family and tortured him, to the point that his desire to exterminate the entire vampirekind is his sole reason to live. [[AllLovingHero Roland and Noé]] tried to reach out to him, but they gave up on it once they saw Astolfo is far too AxCrazy for them to be able to talk sense into him and make him change his murderous ways.

* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Astolfo is the second Paladin that Noé faces and is meant to be the polar opposite of Roland in terms of personality and beliefs. Roland didn't ever question that vampires were pure evil until he meets Noé and the latter's kindness convinces him that vampires can be good people too. On the other hand, Astolfo initially believed vampires were good, only to be tricked and betrayed by a vampire who pretended to befriend him only to kill his family. After what happened to him, Astolfo can't see vampires as anything but cruel and treacherous monsters, which forces Noé to face that Astolfo is an enemy that he can't reason with, unlike Roland. Also, while Noé likes Roland for his friendly and heroic personality, he hates Astolfo after seeing the latter wants to kill vampires and humans indiscriminately.

* EvilStoleMyFaith: Even though he belongs to the church, Astolfo stopped believing in God when his entire family was killed by vampires and no one came to save them. Only Roland arrived to protect him from the vampires and Astolfo [[LikeAGodToMe came to view Roland as his god]], until Roland broke ties with him after seeing Astolfo is a bloodthirsty psycho beyond help.

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Noé does sympathize with Astolfo's traumatic past, but he ultimately concludes that vampires murdering Astolfo's family doesn't justify him [[VanHelsingHateCrimes trying to brutally murder all vampires he encounters in a vengeful rage]], not least because he's so AxCrazy that he's got a significant human body count as well. Afterwards, Noé outright states he hates Astolfo and doesn't regret fighting him to protect Chloé and Jean-Jacques.

* HateSink: Despite his absolutely brutal past, Astolfo is an extremely petty, rude, and frustrating young man, having been caught up in it and refuses to admit there are good vampires despite the evidence.

* MeanBoss: He's prone to hitting his vice-captain Marco to shut him up or simply to take his anger out on someone.

* RoseHairedSweetie: PlayedWith. He has dark pink hair and his original personality was very gentle and innocent. Then a vampire who pretended to be his friend got his entire family killed. After that, Astolfo lost all of his kindness and became obsessed with killing all of vampire kind as well as humans who get in his way.

* SissyVillain: He has a pretty feminine appearance. He's also completely off his rocker and is clearly the most amoral and violent of the Chasseurs.

* TautologicalTemplar: Since he insists vampires can be nothing but evil, Astolfo views anything he does to kill vampires as absolute justice. He even kills innocent civilians for the "sin" of sympathizing with vampires and comes to hate Roland for telling him what he did was ''very'' wrong.

* {{Tsundere}}: A bit towards Roland. Despite having a reputation for his antagonism towards Roland, Astolfo clearly still respects his senior Paladin and doesn't really hate him as much as he pretends. During a mental breakdown, he calls out for Roland like a helpless child, showing he still has fond feelings for Roland.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: In the past, Astolfo was a kind little boy until he innocently trusted a vampire boy who was being hunted by the Chasseurs. As a result, many vampires brutally murdered his parents, drank his and his little sister's blood until the latter died and thirteen vampires left marks of possession on his body. Astolfo swore to hunt vampires into extinction in revenge and became the AxCrazy BloodKnight he's today.

* MirrorCharacter: Louis serves as a meaningful parallel to Vanitas, in terms of their relationships with Noé. Like Vanitas, Louis was a boy with a problematic attitude due to his tragic circumstances. He had a rocky start with Noé who disliked his rudeness, but he quickly became Noé's closest friend, much like what happens between Noé and Vanitas later. Noé also notices Vanitas occasionally has the same empty, depressed look in his eyes as Louis did. [[spoiler:Making the parallels even more prevalent, just like Louis, Vanitas is being transformed into something else against his will and his only wish is dying by Noé's hands before he completely loses himself. Noé failed to fulfill Louis' wish, but his narration says he will kill Vanitas at the end.]]

* InLoveWithLove: Post-Gévaudan arc, Jeanne's sudden change of heart towards Vanitas seems to be closer along the lines that she's much more infatuated with the idea of experiencing romantic love itself than rationally considering the relationship. It's {{justified|trope}}; due to having been treated like a tool for a long time, Jeanne is eager to jump at the first chance of love that has presented itself to her. Luca and Domi try to discourage this behavior to no avail, as it seems Jeanne is completely disregarding the more unsavory aspects of Vanitas's character that had initially made him {{abhorrent|admirer}} to her.

* LovingAShadow: While Jeanne is acutely aware of some of the more distasteful aspects of Vanitas's personality, she isn't really privy to the fact much of the Vanitas she's been exposed to is more bluster than genuine. Eventually, Jeanne finds herself charmed by Vanitas's more gentlemanly behaviors and heroic actions after he rescues her dear friend Chloé, but she hasn't even gotten close to seeing the full picture of him.

* MoralityPet: Ruthven's interactions with Jeanne are the main proof that he isn't heartless. Although he cursed her to stop her from revealing the secret of her blood cravings, Ruthven is genuinely kind to Jeanne and took her in when the rest of the senate wanted to kill her after [[YouHaveFailedMe she failed to kill the Beast of Gévaudan]]. After all, Jeanne is the only one of Ruthven's former students who is still alive.

* MsFanservice: Jeanne has one of the biggest chests in the series and is also the only female to have been depicted in her undergarment during her IntimateHealing scene with Vanitas.

* HiddenAgendaVillain: We don't know what exactly he's up to, but it definitely isn't something good if it involves working with Charlatan.
