The main survivors who we follow throughout the story of the comet's impact.

* ActionSurvivor: He does his best trying to make it all by himself out in Mexico after the impact destroys everything around him. [[spoiler: He doesn't make it.]]
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler: His entire story is about trying to return to his family in Mexico. He never finds them, and dies alone at the edge of the comet's impact crater.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Nothing will stop him from getting back to his family. Not even a comet strike that impacted close by, turning the entire local area into a literal wasteland.
* DyingAlone: [[spoiler: After his dogs abandon him, he dies all alone at the edge of the impact crater without ever finding his family, who are likely all dead]].
* FatalFamilyPhoto: He carries around a picture of his wife and his daughter throughout his whole story, and [[spoiler: he never finds them, and dies without ever knowing for sure if they made it.]]
* TheHero: Treated as the lead character, taking a lot of screentime and we follow his story throughout much of the documentary. His actor also gets first billing in the credits.

* HeroesLoveDogs: He saves a couple of dogs from dying in the violent wall of fire from the comet's impact. They would have starved to death in the building where they were locked up if he hadn't come along. [[spoiler: Too bad they abandoned him.]]
* PlotArmor: He's caught up in the blast radius of the comet's impact. So of course, he happens to be right at an old building with a concrete bunker, which allows him to survive the AdvancingWallOfDoom that ensues from the impact. [[spoiler: It runs out when he climbs up to the rim of the impact crater]].
* ShootTheShaggyDog: [[spoiler: All of his efforts to find his family lead to him dying at the edge of the impact crater all alone, never finding them.]]

* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Alongside Shiang, he's treated with [[spoiler: suspicion and slight disdain by the group of survivors Chad is bringing to his yacht]], though nothing ever comes of it.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: He and Shiang are shown having had a baby after all their struggles.]]

* NiceGuy: Every scene with him shows him as a truly decent man. When he and Shiang first encounter survivors, his first order of business is to try and help them since one of them has an injured hand, though the strangers don't trust either of them and run off.
* RescueRomance: He and Shiang are shown kissing on the yacht right after [[spoiler: he saves her from a starving shark when she falls in the water.]] Though, they were shown growing closer to each other before this event.
* TokenWhite: He's one of the only white men [[spoiler: in the Chinese village that rescued him and Shiang from the ocean]], though there are plenty of other people of other ethnicities shown as well.

* AsianAndNerdy: She's a scientist working in Hawaii's NASA center. She appears to specialize in geology and seismology and volcanology.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: She and Noah have a child after all their struggles.]]

* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler: Her efforts to survive are rewarded when she and Noah are saved from the sea after a horrible storm by people in Southern China. She gives birth to a baby and they're shown living happily together in the Chinese village.]]

* NiceGirl: Is shown being nothing but kind to everyone around her. In the same instance when she and Noah find other survivors in Hawaii, she leaves some medicine in the bag left behind for them in case they return.
* RescueRomance: She and Noah are shown kissing on the yacht not long after [[spoiler: he saves her from a starving shark.]] Downplayed slightly in that they were already growing closer right after the comet's impact.
