* JerkassHasAPoint: Deconstructed. He often manages to accurately pin-point the faults of others, such as his dad's abuse, Roman's phony fratbro persona, Shiv's NotSoDifferent behavior, and Greg's parasitic relationship to the family. However, he's often needlessly cruel and vindictive when he verbalizes those faults, ensuring they'll never take his observations to heart.

* {{Hypocrite}}: He's uncomfortable with Shiv's letter denouncing [[spoiler: Kendall's betrayal of Logan and exposing Kendall's drug abuse]]. However, he's perfectly willing to send spies to harass extended family for the sake of his faction's advantage. Notably, he views ''others'' as hypocrites when this is exposed, thinking they're only mad because its ''him'' doing it.

* AmicableExes: With his ex-wife Rava, initially, although things end up deteriorating between them.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Kendall obviously grew up disconnected from the real world and might just be crumbling under the weight of his own emotional stress, but there is definitely a way to read his self-destructive tendencies, addictive personality, bouts of disassociation, stilted mannerisms and poor social skills as indicative of either a mental illness or a personality disorder. His son Iverson also seems to have a similar issue.
** His behavior during the whole first episode of Season 3 seems very similiar to a maniac episode.

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain[=/=]PoliticallyIncorrectHero: He's neither a straight-up hero or villain, and of all the Roy siblings he's the one who cries most loudly about social issues, leading to derisive nicknames like "Wokahontas". It isn't exactly an act, but he ''does'' have misogynistic tendencies in the way he treats women and shows pretty extreme classism.

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: Logan's yet to display any overt racist or white supremacist views, but ATN is a direct reflection of his own idealogies, and they're so right-wing they employed a fascist as one of their biggest names. He's also no stranger to misogyny, which is a possible motivation for why he kept Shiv in the cold for so long. !!Logan Roy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roy_logan.jpeg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"Sometimes, it ''is'' a big dick competition."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/BrianCox

-->''"He's morally bankrupt. He's a nothing man who may well be more personally responsible for the death of this planet than any other single human being. [...] In terms of the lives that will be lost by his whoring for the climate change deniers, there's a very persuasive argument to be made that he's worse than Hitler."''
--->-- '''Ewan Roy'''

The fearsome — but aging — patriarch of the family. He emigrated to the US from Scotland (by way of Canada) and founded the media conglomerate Waystar Royco, which he is intensely protective of even in the face of his declining health.
----
* AbusiveParents: Logan is a terrifying father figure who looms over all his children:
** His brutal Hobbesian way of seeing the world has led to him pitting his children against one another, and as a result, every one of them has severe issues with self-confidence and their relationship with him can most charitably be described as "complex". His love for them is not unconditional, depending entirely on their loyalty and usefulness. They're aware of this, but still have such an emotional bond to him as their parent and provider that they struggle to gain his approval.
** While his abuse is mostly of the emotional variety, he does strike Roman at one point, and the immediate reaction from Kendall implies it might not be the first time, even though he later offers a sort-of apology to Roman by saying he didn't realize Roman was standing so close when his hand came up, and even says he doesn't hit his kids.
** It's also heavily implied short of outright stated that he himself [[TroubledAbuser struggled]] under an abusive parent figure in the form of "evil Uncle Noah". Logan has numerous permanent scars on his back and he comments about not being able to talk back to his uncle.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Wants to monopolize all news media in order to push his own agenda, making him have unparalleled amounts of influence in the country, and does not really care that the law says he shouldn't.
* ArchnemesisDad: To some of his kids.
** To Kendall, whom he grooms as his successor and then callously betrays. Kendall's character arc revolves around him standing up to his father by trying to take him down.
** To Shiv, when she starts working for a Bernie Sanders-style left wing politician who's deadset on bringing Roy down.
* BadBoss: Will cover up crimes (including rape and murder) and lose no sleep after massive layovers.
* BaitTheDog: What starts the feud between him and Kendall that is the central conflict of the show. He promises to step down and give the company to Kendall, but after his stroke and seeing Kendall's general poor handling of the company, he decides to maintain his role as CEO.
* BeardOfEvil: He sports a goatee.
* BerserkButton: Having his authority challenged or questioned is a great way to find yourself shouted at, fired, punished, humiliated or even assaulted.
* BetrayalByOffspring: His entitled, power-hungry children are constantly scheming to dethrone him, with Kendall in particular being a repeat offender.
* BigBad: Of the entire show and to so many different people. Logan is the most toxic influence in everyone's lives, including his own, and his political agenda has been slowly poisoning the world over the course of his reign.
* BlatantLies:
** Him during the family therapy session. It is very obvious to everyone he did not arrange it with any other motive than to cover his own ass.
** His claim that his team won't allow him to [[spoiler: take the fall for cruises]] rings pretty hollow since we constantly see him bully them into doing whatever he wants.
** He also insists to Shiv that [[spoiler: he had no idea what was going on in the cruises and that what happened was simply a few rogue employees.]] Shiv doesn't believe him.
* {{Catchphrase}}:
** He likes to say, "We're all pals here!" in an effort to lower everyone's guard so he can choose which close friend, family member or colleague is weak enough to roast on a spit.
** "Fuck off!"
* BrutalHonesty: Logan makes no effort to sugarcoat just how little respect he has for his children or how disappointing he finds them.
* TheBully: Probably the best way to describe Logan. Kendall even calls him as such in the season two finale.
* CanadaEh: He grew up in Quebec though he's about as far removed from the stereotype of Canadians being friendly and polite as you can get.
* ControlFreak: Part of the reason why he doesn't step down. (But also because Kendall is not....great as CEO.) [[spoiler: Kendall uses this against him in the finale of season two, noting that Logan's tyrannical and controlling approach means it's ludicrous to believe he had no idea about the sexual abuse on the cruise line.]]
* CutHisHeartOutWithASpoon: He's very fond of elaborate, profanity laden threats to anyone who gets on his bad side.
* DeadpanSnarker: Often and of a much crueler variety than usual.
* DespotismJustifiesTheMeans: As Ewan notes, Logan's desire to do "all the news" and his network's support of right-wing causes (including the denial of climate change) has led to him being indirectly responsible for more deaths and havoc than Hitler.
* TheDreaded: Most characters on the show, and especially his children, are afraid of him.
* EtTuBrute: After [[spoiler: Kendall organizes a vote of no confidence to remove him as CEO of Waystar. He loses all trust in Kendall and most in Roman. This happens again after Kendall organizes a buyout of Waystar from under him.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He is objectively a bad person, but he very obviously loves Marcia. And in his continuous attempts to get his children (back) into the company, he expresses his own form of love for his family. When a gunshot goes off at headquarters and he is herded into a panic room, he asks only if Kendall is also safe.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: For all his horrific treatment of his kids, he seems to draw the line at physical abuse. The only time we ever see him apologize to anyone is after striking Roman in a fit of anger.
* EvilGenius: Regardless of the impact of his actions, Logan is undeniably a savvy businessman.
* EvilIsPetty: Logan's impetus for his extremely risky and potentially catastrophic (if not outright illegal) obsession with acquiring PGM? They spent a few inches of print mocking him, decades ago.
** The fact that it’s his brother Ewan’s favorite news is an added bonus for his spite.
* EvilOldFolks: He's well into his later years and really should have retired, but his malice seems to do a good job of keeping him alive and in the game.
* EvilSoundsDeep: He's a terrifying tyrant and bully with Brian Cox's famously sonorous voice.
* EvilVirtues: Horrible as he is, Logan does have qualities that are hard not to respect:
** Ambition - Logan is extremely ambitious, wanting to massively expand his company and media influence and have an even greater impact on world affairs.
** Determination - Logan will not stop once he sets his sights on a goal and he created his company from nothing which requires an intense level of determination.
** Dilligence - Logan built his company up from nothing which required decades of hard work and sacrifice and he maintains as much work ethic now in expanding his reach.
** Love - Of a very twisted sort but Logan is capable of caring deeply about others. He loves his wife Marcia and it's been shown that he still loves Kendall, even after all the bad blood between them.
** Passion - Logan is very hot blooded and deeply invested in his goals, not tolerating anything that stands in the way of achieving them.
** Respect - Granted, this occurs once in a blue moon but Logan is capable of respecting people who show their worth and even has some towards those who work against him [[spoiler:as his reaction to Kendall in the finale of season two shows.]]
** Valor - Logan never backs down from a conflict or goes down easy, no matter who he might be up against.
** Vigilance - Logan always has an eye out for enemies, even among his own children, and will do whatever he has to to neutralize them in advance.
* FatAndSkinny: Although Logan is more "stocky" than fat, he's significantly shorter and stouter than his brother Ewan, who is very tall and skinny.
* FatBastard: Logan's got a noticeable gut and is definitely not on the side of the angels.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He can turn on the false charm when needed but it rarely lasts long before he reverts to his usual bullying demeanor.
* FreudianExcuse: It's teased at. He was physically abused by his uncle and seems to have had a complicated relationship with his mother. Then there's the matter of Rose, a long-dead sister who he never mentions to the point of her almost becoming an UnPerson within the family. Ewan implies that whatever happened to her, Logan needlessly blames himself for it.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: His backstory. He is a man of humble origins who grew up to become one of the most powerful men in the States.
* GrumpyOldMan: He's in his later years and there's rarely a scene where he isn't angry or in a bad mood about something.
* HairTriggerTemper: He's almost always in a foul mood and it takes very little to get him angry and unloading verbal abuse on anyone in his vicinity.
* HeirClubForMen: His focus on finding a successor has mostly been focused on Kendall and he's rarely given any serious thought to Shiv for the role, despite knowing of her intelligence and capability.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Very downplayed as he's still extremely powerful and feared but it's brought up a few times, most notably by Stewy in the season two finale, that Logan isn't the all-powerful figure he once was, as evidenced by being forced to make mergers and the fact that Gil Eavis is launching a campaign against him which it's implied would never have happened twenty years ago, and investors are increasingly starting to see him as a relic who is holding the company back.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He demands respect and deference, especially from his kids, while treating everyone around him like dirt and he is furious at any attempted betrayal but had no issue preparing to let Kendall be the scapegoat over the cruises scandal.
* IcyBlueEyes: He has Brian Cox's striking blue eyes which nicely emphasize his cold-hearted nature.
* IHaveNoSon: [[spoiler:Treats Kendall this way after the vote of no confidence.]]
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:Spent most of his life trying to raise his children to be as brutal as he is to one day inherit the company. This is ironic on three fronts: it breaks his 3 sons, none of whom end up competent enough to run the company successfully; his only daughter, who IS competent enough to run the company, has been driven away from the company; and his son uses those same brute tactics to stage a hostile takeover.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: "Fuck off" seems to be his favorite phrase.
* JerkassHasAPoint: His critiques of his children are bitingly harsh, but aside from the mean-spiritedness of his comments, they're generally true.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: He can barely be called affable, apart from those few scenes of intimacy between him and Marcia. And his rough exterior is a direct reflection of his cruelty.
* KickTheDog: Regularly with Kendall being his preferred target.
* LackOfEmpathy: He really doesn't care about the feelings of others, ESPECIALLY his own children.
* LargeHam: When he gets going, Logan can be ''very'' theatrical and really commits to making his threats and insults as theatrical as possible.
* LegacySeeker: Zig-zagged. Logan constantly says that he wants his legacy to outlive him, though Ewan also niggles him with the real consequences of the Roy legacy (e.g. climate change, political populism, etc). In theory, Logan wants one of his four kids to take over his company... but due to a combination of Logan's narcissism, inner problems at Waystar Royco, and his awareness of his kids' flaws, it becomes increasingly clear that Logan doesn't really want any of his children to take over and resents them for even believing they're capable of it.
* MachiavelliWasWrong: An aversion, demonstrating all the rewards (and nearly no repercussions) of being a ruthless despot feared by his nearest and dearest.
* TheNapoleon: Not to an extreme degree but Logan is noticeably shorter than most other male characters in the show (Brian Cox is about 5'6) other than Roman and he's a short-tempered, bullying tyrant.
* {{Narcissist}}: Wants to buy all local TV networks to use as a way of spreading his own worldview. In addition, he regularly shows no consideration for anyone else, is very self-conscious about his image, gets enraged at any perceived disrespect or challenges to his authority, is always seeking greater power and expects absolute respect from his kids despite never giving it.
* NeverMyFault: He loves telling them all the ways in which they suck yet it seemingly never occurs to him that his kids' various issues might have something to do with his less than stellar parenting.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Unsurprisingly he's incredibly rude to the wait staff during Shiv's wedding.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: The comparisons to UsefulNotes/RupertMurdoch are obvious, though he shares some similarities (general appearance, early life in Quebec) with newspaper publisher Conrad Black.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He has no patience for weak-willed individuals and half-assed plans. If you're [[spoiler: going to try to oust him, you better be upfront about it.]]
* ParentalFavoritism: Like all Roy family workings, it's complicated. In season 1, Kendall calls Shiv Logan's favorite and Logan certainly is the most outwardly affectionate towards her as he seems to genuinely appreciate and acknowledge Shiv's intellect. But unlike Kendall, who has messed up and betrayed Logan more times than one can count, Shiv messing up one deal and asking Logan [[spoiler:to spare Tom in the cruise scandal]] is enough for Logan to completely rule her out. The show also implies that Roy's sexist thinking prevents him from ever fully taking her seriously as his successor. Ironically then, one can argue that Kendall is the favorite and that Logan's cruelty towards him in particular is his own jumped up version of tough love.
* ThePatriarch: Of the Roy family.
* PetTheDog:
** He is the only Roy to notice the hurt of the working-class kid that Roman humiliated in the pilot, and gives him the Patek Philippe that Tom gave him. However, while Logan shows his disdain for his kids' spoiled attitudes that they all ignore the kid, he is, as usual, completely oblivious to the fact that he has encouraged them to be this way.
** When Greg [[spoiler: tells Logan he needs to quit due to Ewan’s threats of cutting off his inheritance, Logan reacts seemingly genuinely, tells Greg he likes him, and tells him it’s ultimately his choice to side with him or Ewan.]]
** A rather twisted example, but after he breaks Kendall down into a subservient lapdog, he mostly acts more gentle towards him. This is likely due to a combination of Kendall no longer posing a threat to him, and no longer being seen as a worthy successor deserving of Logan's sink or swim methods.
** Apologizes to Roman after striking him. It's a pathetic apology where he downplays his own actions, but it's still noticeably the only apology we see Logan give.
** When he [[spoiler: tells Kendall that he's to take the fall for cruises, he at least has the decency to do so in a very delicate manner where he makes it clear that he hates doing so but can't see any other valid options. He praises Kendall, gives him an honest answer on what he thinks of his leadership potential, and tries to assuage his son's guilt over his vehicular manslaughter. The last point is an especially dark instance though given he refers to the death Kendall's been broken up over as an incident where no real person was harmed.]]
** When he reunites with Marcia, we see Logan's second attempt at apologizing. Though still pretty lacking, his wife seems to realize that's the best she can ask for from him and they have a warm moment.
** Usually when he gives a [[PetTheDog nice moment]] to anyone in his orbit, you can bet it’s mixed in with some ulterior motives.
There's also been plenty of hints that far from merely covering up the cruises scandal, he may have been a direct participant in the sexual abuses that took place.
* {{Pride}}: He will not let go of his company. He also refuses visitors in his weakened state after his stroke.
* PsychopathicManchild: Despite his immense success and savvy, Logan is still ultimately an overgrown bully who thinks of power mainly as a way to let him do whatever he wants with no thought as to the consequences.
* RagsToRiches: His backstory is that he came from poverty to become one of the richest and most powerful men in the country. This has been exaggerated for publicity purposes by his company as we later see he lived in a perfectly normal home back in Dundee and his background was more working class than extremely poor as is often stated.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Hands these out regularly and has pretty much perfected them to a fine art with Kendall being his favorite target.
* ScatterbrainedSenior: Zig-zagged. He is eighty years old at the beginning of the series and still dangerously clever, but the very first scene of the show has him urinate on the carpet because he mistakes it for the toilet.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: Logan believes that laws, ethics and even good behavior are entirely optional for him, and he has so much money that they essentially are. He has numerous politicians in his pocket and a direct line to the president. It's why Senator Eavis wants to take him down.
* SelfMadeMan: He built one of the largest corporate empires on the planet from the ground up, and he did so coming from rather humble surroundings.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: A possible interpretation of his abusive behavior toward his children is that he is toughening them up to become "killers" worthy to succeed him.
* SirSwearsALot: One of his catchphrases is "fuck off!".
* SurroundedByIdiots: Logan is frequently frustrated by the fact that none of his children fit his idea of what a successor should be. He ''does'' have quite a few highly intelligent and competent people in his inner circle, but he doesn't see it that way.
-->'''Logan:''' I am surrounded by snakes and fucking morons. You're a bunch of silk-stocking fucks!
* ToughLove: He seems to view his parenting style as a way of making his kids prepared for the cut throat world of business. The results have been...mixed, to say the least.
* TroubledAbuser: He had an [[AbusiveParents abusive father figure]] who severely beat him up, and then became an abusive parent himself.
* TheUnapologetic: He only ever sincerely apologizes once in the whole series for anything he does (striking Roman in a fit of anger) and even then, it's noticeably half-hearted and downplays his actions.
* VillainRespect: One possible explanation for the ending of Season 2. [[spoiler:After Kendall betrays his father on live television, Logan reacts with a faint smile, as his son has finally proven himself a "killer."]]
* VillainousBreakdown: When things turn against him and he can't aggressively force them back in his favor, Logan tends to react very poorly as his reaction to Rhea Jarrell abanonding him when the cruise scandal emerges shows.
* VillainProtagonist: He's this if you consider him to be the main character in the series.
* ViolentGlaswegian: He was born in Dundee, Scotland and is very caustic and short tempered.
* VisionaryVillain: He definitely has a vision. Whether that's a good or bad thing is for debate.
* WellDoneSonGuy: His children all seek his approval in some ways, with Kendall and Roman being the most obvious about it. However, they rarely live up to his standards and when they do (Shiv), if it is outside of the family business, he doesn't really care.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: His hair has gone completely white, as expected given his age, and he's a tyrannical, borderline monstrous figure.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: He has been grooming Kendall to be his successor, but overall finds him an InadequateInheritor — a thin-skinned, weak-willed drug addict neither ruthless nor smart enough for the cutthroat world of business, as well as someone who has had things handed to him his entire life instead of working for them. (Logan's assessment, while vicious, is [[JerkassHasAPoint not wrong]]).
* WouldHurtAChild: He slaps Kendall's son Iverson and refuses to apologize. This seems to be what finally gets Kendall to try to oust him.

[[caption-width-right:350:''"No discussion. I am his next of kin. I am his proxy. I am in charge. Thank you."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/HiamAbbass

Logan’s third wife Marcia is fiercely devoted to Logan but has yet to earn the full trust of his children, especially Shiv.
----
* BadassBoast: She gives a coldly efficient one to Rhea.
-->''"When I lose, the other one will generally lose an eye or so."''
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Marcia is outwardly polite and pleasant, but cross her, and the consequences will be anything but pleasant (although still polite!) She won't hesitate to call you out, even if it's at your own wedding or at a business dinner in which your future is decided.
* CoolOldLady: She is elegant, cunning and put-together, and can be absolutely terrifying when she needs to bring someone to her heel.
* CommutingOnABus: She is in theory there all the way through Season 2, but she doesn't go on many of the trips with the Roys which result in her being out of the picture for longish periods of time.
* DarkMistress: [[spoiler:She's as equally interested as Logan is in framing the dead caterer as a thief so Logan can be freed of suspicion of his death.]]
* ForeignLanguageTirade: When delivering a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Shiv, Marcia occasionally lapses into her native French.
* MoralityPet: To Logan Roy. He can't summon respect or affection for any of his offspring, but he does seem to genuinely love Marcia.
* MysteriousPast: When Shiv investigates her background, she doesn't find any information about her prior to when she was 31. In the second season she outright states that even if given a year, she wouldn't have enough time to tell you all about her past.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She gives a pretty damn devastating one to Shiv in the penultimate episode of the first season, calling her out for being spoiled and entitled as she actively works against the one man who gave her the privilege to do so.
* SilkHidingSteel: Marcia is extremely polite, fairly quiet, and appears much more put together than the Roy kids' mother Caroline. But if even Logan messes with her, she is willing to do some serious damage.
* WickedStepmother: The siblings consider her this, seeing her as a gold digger who's entrapped Logan, especially when she refuses to let them see Logan while he's recovering from his stroke (though she has good reason to).
* WomanScorned: She is ''not'' happy about being sidelined during the second season and doesn't hesitate to let Logan know it.

!!Kendall Roy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_kendall2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"I just wanted to get the gang together early in my tenure to say...uh, yo."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/JeremyStrong

-->''"You're my number one boy."''
--->-- '''Logan Roy'''

Kendall — Logan’s middle son (and the oldest child from his second marriage) — has been employed in a senior position at Waystar and is primed to lead the company when Logan retires. However, he is a [[RecoveredAddict recovering drug addict]] who has yet to gain the full trust of his father.
----
* AddledAddict: He spends the majority of Season 2 as a puffy-faced, visibly strung out, suicidal kleptomaniac — and, after one particularly epic bender, shits his own bed.
* AssholeVictim: He is a rich, entitled jackass guilty of [[spoiler:manslaughter]]; while he deserves punishment for his actions, his TraumaCongaLine in Season 2, which culminates in a near-suicide, lends him a measure of sympathy. On the Internet, this has been [[https://www.insider.com/succession-jeremy-strong-kendall-theon-game-of-thrones-interview-2019-10 explicitly compared]] to the Theon/Reek storyline on ''Series/GameOfThrones'', with Kendall's actor backing this comparison.
* BatmanGambit: Despite often coming across as awkward and socially out-of-touch, Kendall can be surprisingly adept at manipulating people to his own ends. For example, early in the series, he wants to get some negative press about the trouble at Waystar without being the source of such a story. He gets around this by calling Lawrence Yee, insulting him and demanding that Lawrence run no stories about Waystar. This, of course, gets Kendall both the story he wants and an excuse if he's asked about it later.
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: He has one about Rava. Although he seems to have treated her very badly, he seems convinced they'll get back together until he realizes she's dating someone else.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Immediately yells at Logan, and comforts and examines Roman after Logan backhands him so hard he knocks one of Roman's teeth out. Like the PapaWolf incident below, it's one of the only times he stands up to Logan directly, and this time it's even while he's in the midst of pathetic subservience to Logan.
* BirdsOfAFeather: He bonds with Naomi Pierce over their shared issues with drugs.
* BreakTheHaughty: His entire storyline in the show, starting with the very first episode when he's told that no, he will not be succeeding Logan in running the company.
* BrokenTears: He breaks down in Logan's arms in Season 1 finale after Logan threatens to expose his involvement [[spoiler:in the death of a waiter]]. Later in Season 2, he cries in front of Shiv when confronted about his defeated subservience to their father.
* ButIReadABookAboutIt: He actually has a decent grasp on business theory, but lacks the experience and "killer" instincts needed to succeed in the position he so covets.
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler: He finally stands up for himself and rips into Logan in the Season 2 finale — on live TV, no less]].
* CharacterDevelopment: He slowly grows both a backbone and a conscience over the course of Season 2, which culminates in him [[spoiler: finally becoming a worthy adversary to his own father]].
* ColorMotif: Kendall has a noticeable fondness for the color brown, which seems to be his go-to clothing choice for all high-stakes situations outside of work hours — both when he wants to blend into the background (i.e. when he's visiting [[spoiler:the family of the waiter he killed]]) and when he wants to stand out (his brown tux in a sea of black at a gala). He is also seen wearing brown in the Season 2 promotional poster. Brown is associated with both decay and dependability, which is fitting for a character who is both the AddledAddict and TheDutifulSon. [[note]]In the business world, brown is seen as a weaker and less desirable color choice than black, navy or charcoal, and was in fact not considered an acceptable business color until the 1980s.[[/note]] (It should be noted that Kendall's color palette in Season 1 was much more austere and formal; it's only after he's broken down at the end of Season 1 that he starts wearing "muddied" colors and taking some fashion risks with his clothes).
* CreepyMonotone: His normal tone of voice, which, coupled with his dead-eyed delivery, makes him look less like a human being and more like a glitchy robot.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the "sad rich boy" and ByronicHero. He's so sorely lacking in self-awareness, so entitled, so responsible for his own failures and so greedy (for more affection, attention and power) that, instead of coming across as charming and TroubledButCute, he mostly seems pathetic, needy and petty, and more of a VillainProtagonist than an AntiHero.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: There are hints that Kendall simply wants approval and love and will take it from anywhere he can get it, making him susceptible to Logan's manipulations.
* DirtyCoward: Actively works behind his father's back to try to get him ousted while being generally genial and pleasant to his face. Though given who Logan is, it's something of a necessity. It then becomes a serious character flaw after he [[spoiler:leaves the waiter to die on the eve of Shiv's wedding.]]
* DisappointingOlderSibling: Although he isn't Logan's oldest son (that's Connor), Logan makes it clear that he is also disappointed in Logan most of the time, despite being highly well-trailed.
* DisneylandDad: Type II. He is estranged from his ex-wife and has either limited or no custody of his children, with their interactions restricted to Thanksgiving dinners and birthday outings to amusement parks.
* TheDogBitesBack: He gets no respect from his father, and is blackmailed into a subservient position to him in season 2 — until [[spoiler:he finally stands up to his father, stabbing him in the back on live television]].
* TheDragon: After Logan has blackmailed and broken Kendall, he essentially uses him as his number one enforcer, knowing that he'll do whatever task Logan requires with no question.
* DrivenToSuicide: He contemplates throwing himself off the office roof in Season 2, but is barred from the possibility when the company erects barriers there.
* DrowningMySorrows: He falls OffTheWagon after his vote of no confidence fails.
* DrunkDriver: In the Season 1 finale, to disastrous [[spoiler:and deadly]] results.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: He's already pretty dead-eyed at the show's start, but he gets worse as the series progresses, with people describing him as "a corpse" and "yuppie Robocop".
* DumbassHasAPoint: He's not as business-savvy as he wants to believe he is, but he's completely right about local news being outmoded and digital media being a valuable asset.
* TheDutifulSon: Shiv (initially) and Connor have no interest in the family business and Roman has no patience for it, whereas Kendall is always by his father's side at Waystar. However, he turns into TheStarscream the moment he's told he won't be getting his perceived reward.
* TheEeyore: He's a morose, unsmiling, dead-eyed guy, although it's hard to tell whether he simply has a depressive personality, has been browbeaten into misery, or some combination of both.
* EmbarrassingDampSheets: He shits the bed after a night of substance abuse.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Kendall's first scene is him (badly) rapping in the back of a limo while wearing noise-canceling headphones, much to his driver's chagrin; this shows how immature and out-of-touch he is (and also displays his unfortunate affinity for white boy rap). He then arrives to an important business meeting and immediately starts using casual youth lingo, showing how unfit he is for the world of business.
* FallGuy: [[spoiler:Logan chooses him as "the blood sacrifice" for the cruises scandal, at which point Kendall decides he's had enough]].
* FatalFlaw: His debilitating issues with addiction — to drugs, and less obviously (but more tragically) to power — cause him to frantically chase the very things that make him the most miserable, be it blow or the position of CEO that he is clearly unsuited for. Most overtly, [[spoiler:he would have finally had control over Logan had he not driven off for a quick fix during Shiv's wedding.]]
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Responsible to Roman's foolish, for the majority of Season 1.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic.
* FunctionalAddict: He falls off the wagon after being fired, but more or less stays upright until "Nobody is Ever Missing."
* GenderBlenderName: "Kendall" is nowadays more popular as a name for girls.
* GiftedlyBad: Kendall's rap in Season 2. His delivery is actually pretty good — he stays on the beat and his flow is decent — but the lyrics are so inane and cringeworthy that the end result is transcendently terrible.
* HatesTheirParent: He is desperate for his father's approval, but just as desperate to ruin his father's life.
* HeroicBSOD: Becomes just a shell of his former self in the second season, listlessly carrying out his father's orders like a drone.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: Many of his failures can be attributed to a combination of unchecked substance abuse, hubris, shame, self-loathing, and a desperate need to please his father.
* InadequateInheritor: What Logan believes him to be (and what he probably is, from what the viewer is shown of his business decisions).
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He practically oozes insecurity, desperation and self-loathing despite playing at being a confident, ruthless businessman.
* IvyLeagueForEveryone: He is a Harvard graduate.
* KissOfDeath: Of the original, non-sexual, Judas-kissing-Jesus flavor. [[spoiler:He kisses Logan on the cheek before going on live TV and laying the blame for the cruises scandal on his father]].
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Subverted; he tries hard to be Logan No. 2, but is not ruthless enough to do so. [[spoiler:But finally seems to be played straight as of the Season 2 finale, when he appears to be doing what Logan wants but actually backstabs him on live television - which is a very Logan move.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: A key reason Kendall is not ready to handle taking over the company is because Logan has been keeping so many things close to him — e.g. the fact that the company is about three billion dollars in debt.
* ManChild: Obsessed with teen lingo and youth culture, hedonistic, prone to misreading social situations, and pathetically desperate for his father's approval.
* MinorFlawMajorBreakup: Kendall breaks it off with a new girlfriend because she said "awesome" too much after meeting Logan.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Kendall was loyal to Logan and had just completed a major deal for Waystar-Royco. He fully expected his father to name him the new CEO. Instead, Logan decides to stay on and treats Kendall as a failure. Fed up, Kendall tries to take over the company.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He is left guilt-ridden and shell-shocked after [[spoiler:accidentally killing a waiter at Shiv's wedding]], although the guilt does not extend to coming clean and turning himself in.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: While the Roys in general are heavily based on the Murdoch family, Kendall in particular is similar to James Murdoch — Rupert Murdoch's "cool", liberal-ish son who funded Rawkus Records in the 1990s and helped launch the careers of Mos Def and Talib Kweli.
* NoRespectGuy: His own father has no respect for him, his best intentions are frequently misinterpreted and many of what he thinks are smart plays end up failing because he has relatively little business experience compared to theory. When he does find a strategy that could put him over Logan, he usually does something to ruin it.
* NoSocialSkills: Kendall has real issues in formal or social settings, using inappropriate language in a business meeting and struggling to maintain conversations. Almost everyone finds him incredibly off putting as a result.
* OffTheWagon: There are allusions to a past stint in rehab in the first episode, and midway through the first season he start using again.
* OverlyNervousFlopSweat: He's even described as "a sweaty corpse" at one point.
* PapaWolf: Lashes out at Logan after Logan hits his son at Thanksgiving.
* PerpetualFrowner: Almost always has a look of pure misery on his face.
* PreppyName: Kendall, which is posh-sounding enough even without being associated with [[Series/KeepingUpWithTheKardashians real-life]] and [[Series/AllMyChildren fictional]] heiresses.
* ProneToTears: He has major crying fits in the first and last episodes of Season 1, and spends the next season looking like he's a blink away from tearing up.
* PuppyDogEyes: He's pretty good at the "eyes wet with unshed tears" look, although it never works on anyone in-universe.
* RagingStiffie: In the show's second episode, he gets a very inappropriate erection in the hospital's waiting room when his ex-wife hugs him, which he claims is due to adrenaline.
* RecoveredAddict: One of the reasons Logan doesn't trust him is because he went through rehab.
* RippedFromTheHeadlines: His car accident in the Season 1 finale is based off the infamous [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chappaquiddick_incident Chappaquiddick incident]].
* SignificantWardrobeShift: At the start of the series, he's the heir apparent to Logan and dresses like a typical uber-wealthy finance bro. Once he's ousted from the company and forced to abandon his ambitions, he ditches the bland businessman look and the austere colors and starts wearing a lot of browns instead.
* SpeakingLikeTotallyTeen: Multiple times, he tries to use casual and slang-y language to deal with business associates, which goes poorly.
* SpeechImpediment: If he's nervous or uncomfortable, he will stammer and stutter his way through conversation, with his dialogue eventually dissolving into "uh uh uh"s.
* TheStarscream: Once Logan makes it clear that he sees Kendall as a weak man unfit to inherit the company, Kendall throws all his weight behind trying to usurp his father's position.
* StickyFingers: His TraumaCongaLine sends him into a downward spiral of self-destructive behaviors, which include kleptomania.
* TheStoic: Comes across as more of a statue come to life than a real person.
* SympatheticMurderer: [[spoiler:He accidentally causes the death of a waiter in the Season 1 finale and successfully hides his involvement in said death from the authorities. While this behavior is inexcusable, Kendall's subsequent remorse, as well as a season-long TraumaKongaLine involving blackmail, pathetic subservience to Logan and thoughts of suicide, lends him a measure of sympathy.]] See AssholeVictim, above.
** YMMV but [[spoiler: Logan referring to the waiter Andrew as an NPRI (No Real Person Involved) case, which was also used for the cruises scandal victims, could be seen as another motivator for Kendall to betray him at the press conference.]]
* TantrumThrowing: The moment he learns he will not be named CEO of Waystar, he locks himself in his father's bathroom and proceeds to thoroughly trash it (before calming down and putting things back together).
* TechBro: Kendall, who is vying to lead media conglomerate Waystar Royco, tries and fails to cultivate this image: he dresses much more business casually than the clean-cut old guard like his father, stays in shape, and tries to be "hip". Unfortunately, despite his position and money, he doesn't really have ideas; he (and the Roys) manage other people's for them.
* TokenGoodTeammate: For a very limited value of "good", but he seems to be the only Roy child with something roughly resembling a conscience.
* TookALevelInBadass: Averted. When he tries to take a tough approach to the bank holding the company's debts, it goes over horribly until he gets an escape route via his old friend Stewy. Finally played straight [[spoiler:at the end of Season 2, when he eviscerates his father on live television.]]
* TragicMistake: In the Season 1 finale, his FatalFlaw of drug addiction finally catches up to him [[spoiler:as he drives off for a quick fix and commits vehicular manslaughter]].
* TraumaCongaLine: Starting with the end of Season 1, he is put through a wringer and ends up being completely under Logan's control, becoming nothing more than a defeated puppet for his father. When confronted about one of his actions, he can only summon a miserable, pathetic, "My Dad told me to."
* UndiscriminatingAddict: Kendall's lapses back into substance abuse compel him to consume any drug he can, whether that's meth at a house in New Mexico or ketamine at a secret party in New York.
* TheUnfavorite: Logan is abusive towards all his children, but his attitude towards Kendall — whom he repeatedly humiliates, belittles, blackmails and undermines — is most consistently vicious. Paradoxically, this might mean Kendall is in fact his ''favorite'' child, as Logan is trying to mold him into "a killer" who can step up as CEO of the company.
* VerbalTic: Says "dude" ''a lot'' which fits his immaturity. Also says "uh" a lot, especially when his SpeechImpediment rears its head.
* VillainousWidowsPeak: He has this hairstyle, and whether you consider him a VillainProtagonist or an AntiHero, he's not a virtuous person.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Kendall and Stewy are old friends and often hang out together, despite Kendall seeing Stewy as nothing more than a parasite.
* WardrobeFlawOfCharacterization: The entire Roy family are lacking in taste, but Kendall is the most try-hard of the lot and is thus often the victim of misguided fashion choices, such as an inexplicable affinity for the color brown and the belief that a straw trilby is an acceptable type of hat. Other examples:
** He wears a puffy jacket (with actual lapels) over a puffy vest to a tech conference, thus out-broing all the tech bros present.
** He dons brown Lanvin sneakers to impress a gaggle of businessmen, who promptly fail to be impressed.
** He wears a very unbecoming brown tux — over a baseball jersey, no less — to the 50th anniversary of Waystar Royco.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He's desperate for his father's approval, even when he's in the middle of actively working against him.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Zig-zagged with his car accident. [[spoiler:When trapped in a sinking car, he manages to escape and surface, but immediately dives down again and makes several efforts to save the car's passenger before relenting due to exhaustion. There was no one to witness what happened, so he could have worried only about himself. However, once on land, Kendall immediately begins to cover his tracks to avoid responsibility for the accident.]]

* AmbiguouslyBi: Shiv shows a complete willingness to engage in a threesome with another woman, and is even happy to have sex with that woman while Tom watches. However, this might have been solely for Tom's benefit, since she otherwise shows herself to be solely interested in men. Although, given their relationship exists almost entirely based around Tom giving and Shiv taking, this would imply that Shiv had a genuine interest in the three way.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: While she's often casually cruel and/or dismissive towards Tom, she does defend him from Logan at the cost of losing Logan's respect.
* BadassBoast: As smart and well-connected as she is, she is never wise enough to ''not'' advertise these facts, which then tends to backfire for her.
* BadassDecay: She loses the cool charisma she had in the first season during the second, when her desire to be Logan's successor drives her to a series of humiliating moments.
* BigEgoHiddenDepths: She has a high opinion of herself both personally and professionally, and frequently taunts her lover with the reminder of how out of his league she was. However, she's just as insecure for a relationship with Logan as the rest of her siblings and does feel guilty for cheating on Tom after he realizes the truth.
* ConflictingLoyalty: Between her father Logan and husband Tom at the end of Season 2. She chooses [[spoiler:Tom]].
* EmbarrassingNickname: Pinky, which is Logan's childhood nickname for her.
* EvilRedhead: Her hair is strawberry blonde.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In season 1, she wears her hair long and curly for a softer, feminine look, but once she starts vying for control of Waystar-Royco, she cuts it into a bob — a favorite among career women everywhere.
* FamilyVersusCareer: Shiv must choose between loyalty to her family or dedication to her job in politics, which puts her in opposition to her family. This ends in the second season, where she quits in order to pursue the position of Logan's successor.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic.
* HumiliationConga: The essence of her storyline throughout Season 2.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She is a feminist of the "Lean In" variety, and an ostensible Democrat who will use her connections within the right-wing machine for her own gain.
** She also seems to look down on her brothers for their reliance on their father and desire for his approval but it's made repeatedly clear that Shiv wouldn't have achieved what she has without the family name and that she's just as desperate for his approval as they are.
* InSeriesNickname: Logan calls her "Pinky".
* LadyInAPowerSuit: Her look in Season 2; see SignificantWardrobeShift, below.
* LoveIsAWeakness: [[spoiler:Not wanting to lose Tom, Shiv begs Logan to not let him take the fall for the cruises scandal. This makes Logan quietly dismiss her as a potential successor due to her siding with her husband over family and it doesn't even seem to have that much of an effect on Tom as it is.]]
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: She is definitely the one wearing the pants in her relationship with Tom.
* MeaningfulName: Her nickname, while not a bad way to shorten "Siobhan," reflect that she can be a weapon when she needs to be.
* NeverASelfMadeWoman: As Marcia viciously notes, Shiv would not have gotten as far in life without her father's name and resources.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: While the "hero" part is debatable, Shiv destroys her own advantage over her brothers when she quits/is fired from Gil's campaign. Having just promised her the top job, Logan seems to lose any interest in her immediately and she ends up getting humiliated continuously throughout Season 2.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: She is an amalgamation of Ivanka Trump and Elisabeth Murdoch, the latter of whom apparently has seen and enjoyed the show.
* NotSoAboveItAll: As a person with a career outside Waystar-Royco, she is at first removed from the family drama, but quickly proves herself to be as eager to succeed Logan as her brothers.
* NotSoStoic: She's usually calm and collected, which makes it even more jarring when she [[spoiler:begs Logan not to let Tom take the fall for the cruise ship scandal.]]
* OutnumberedSibling: She is the only daughter among Logan's four children, and, even though she's arguably the smartest and most normal of the siblings, he's thus never thought of her as a potential successor.
* ParentalFavoritism: Very downplayed since this is [[AbusiveParents Logan]] we're talking about but he does seem to have more respect for her than he does Kendall or Roman, which is [[DamnedByFaintPraise admittedly not saying much]].
* PetTheDog:
** She's quite understandably pissed at Kendall over his attempts to take over the company, but when he breaks down crying and hugs her, her sarcasm fades when she realizes something's actually wrong with him, and she tries to comfort her brother.
** After being an awful wife to him, when [[GrewASpine Tom finally stands up for himself]], she realizes just how bad she's been towards her husband, and begs Logan to [[spoiler: spare him the fate of being the Cruise Scandal's [[TheScapegoat scapegoat]]]], even though she's aware it hurts her chances of leading the company in the future.
* ReallyGetsAround: She cheats on Tom and then negotiates an open marriage with him. (Tom is not enthused).
* SignificantWardrobeShift: In Season 1, she wears slouchy sweaters and pants in soft colors, because she wants to be seen as an individual outside her family's influence. In Season 2, where she starts vying for leadership of Waystar, her wardrobe is monochromatic and comprised of turtlenecks and button-downs — she wants to be seen as powerful and business-savvy.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Her reaction Nate and Tom's backing Gil Eavis out of a sincere belief in his campaign and her general view of anyone who doesn't want to use dirty tricks to get ahead.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Her explanation for dating and eventually marrying Tom is that he's "a good guy". Basically no one is fooled.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Downplayed as Shiv is genuinely very smart and capable but she tends to carry herself like she's a strategic and executive genius when a good portion of her rep has been built on relatively easy victories and others have made a point of telling her she wouldn't have made it as far as she has if not for her family name.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She is not the only female character among the main cast, but she ''is'' the only female Roy child and the only woman present in the promotional materials.
* TheStoic: She is very unemotional, cool and collected, especially in comparison to her emotionally unstable brothers.
* StrawNihilist: Often makes passing statements about there being no God and nothing being “real”… usually to justify her cheating on Tom. She even proposed the open marriage using this argument that “love” as it is portrayed doesn’t really exist.
* TheUnfettered: She'll do anything to make her candidate win, and being on the winning side in general. Despite being ostensibly liberal, she isn't afraid to use her name to try to get a news station to sink a negative story about her candidate. She then abandons said candidate for being too "safe" (that is, boring) and then gets behind Gil, getting him to put aside his principles for a compromise with Logan (which she secured via blackmail); this makes her lover aghast, as he's backing Gil out of sincere belief, and she mocks him for his idealism.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Downplayed, considered that she wasn't really a nice person to begin with but [[spoiler:her act of nationally exposing Kendall's relationships and mental issues as well as his addictions was a low blow that makes her more close of Logan Roy's level]].
* UptownGirl: Shiv is this to Tom, a fact that characters repeatedly use to stick a thorn in his side. The series drives this home by having Tom humiliate Shiv's lover at their wedding as this song plays in the background.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: According to Gerri.
* WellDoneSonGuy: A rare female variant and as such, this trope is played with. She starts the show off as being an outsider by choice and puts up a strong front that she is above seeking her father's approval. But season 2, in which she re-enters the company to vie for the CEO position, makes it very clear that she is not, to disastrous effect for her.
** You can even read her initial distance from the inner circle in season 1 as a tacit acknowledgement that she is likely to never get the approval she so seeks from Logan, so she removed herself as a form of self-preservation. Too bad it didn't stick.
* WomanOfWealthAndTaste: Most members of her family are either terrible or boring dressers, and Shiv is the only Roy who is considered something of a style icon within the fandom.
* WomenAreWiser: She is the smartest and most put-together of all the Roy children, and initially finds success in a career outside of the family business. However, her ambition pulls her right back under Logan's thumb.

[[folder:Roman]]
!!Roman "Romulus" Roy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_roman.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"You get off, you eat the shame for dessert."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/KieranCulkin

-->''"Roman... you're a fucking moron."''
--->-- '''Logan Roy'''

Logan’s youngest son (and the [[MiddleChildSyndrome middle child]] from his second marriage), Roman is a cocky, bon-vivant jokester. While he exudes the "killer instinct" and bravado that his father desires from a Waystar executive, his immaturity, laziness and lack of focus have kept him from advancing within the company.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''R'''oman '''R'''oy.
* AnimalMotifs: Is often (unfavorably) compared to a dog: he pretended to be one as a child and is called a "slime puppy" as an adult.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: To Kendall and even Shiv, even though he's older than her.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: His attention span is lacking, to put it mildly, and has kept him from advancing within Waystar.
-->'''Roman''': This is probably the most interesting thing that's happened in my entire life, and I'm thinking about like six other things.
* BondageIsBad: Or, rather, Kink is Bad. He is a semi-sociopathic slimeball with a fondness for humiliation and faked necrophilia.
* BrilliantButLazy: Unlike Kendall, he has very good instincts for business, but no desire to apply himself, at least until Season 2 (see DumbassNoMore).
* CardCarryingVillain: Of the Roy children, he is the most honest and self-aware in regards to his good luck and privilege - but instead of trying to do some good in the world, he cruelly and casually embraces his "spoiled rotten rich kid" persona, at least initially.
* CasanovaWannabe: Roman is always talking about how much sex he gets, but the girl he takes to Shiv's wedding complains that he never has sex with her, and Grace says they only have sex every six months. [[spoiler:Then the second season reveals that he can really only have sex when fantasizing about something deviant, like his partner being dead, or when he's feeling guilt or shame.]]
* ChaoticStupid: Before he [[CharacterDevelopment wisens up]] in Season 2, he entertains himself by spreading chaos wherever he goes, which often backfires for him and those around him.
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Gets a lot of these scenes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Mostly communicates through wisecracks and insults, even compared to the rest of the characters.
* DepravedBisexual: Though he talks a lot about how attracted he is to random women (including his own stepmother), his girlfriends complain he never has sex with them, and he seems really fixated on impressing how important he is to his young, attractive, male personal trainer. Others have even suggested he's actually asexual, though the second season reveals that he gets off on humiliation and feigning necrophilia. It gets confirmed in Season 2 that he was jerked off by the trainer so, in addition to his many character flaws, he seems to use both men and women for his power games.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: He has a lot of ideas but little acumen or experience, so many of his attempts at being cunning fall flat and blow up in his face.
* {{Dismotivation}}: At the beginning of the series, he has no aspirations to succeed Logan and is content to just laze about.
* DumbassNoMore: After spending most of the time being humiliated after trying and failing to take after his father, he spends the second season getting more experience, and after being humbled during a [[ItMakesSenseInContext hostage takeover]] he arrives at the yacht much more mature and intelligent, and even impressively quashes a bad deal that otherwise would have been pushed through.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The foolish to Kendall's responsible, in Season 1.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric.
* TheGadfly: Frequently digs into other characters and heaps on the misery when they're at a low point.
* HaveIMentionedIAmSexuallyActiveToday: He constantly talks about how much sex he has, but he actually can't perform with this girlfriend, and if his behavior with Gerri and his personal trainer is any indication, he actually only gets off on jerking off or ''being'' jerked off.
* HiddenDepths: Despite all of his dickishness, he really does care about Kendall even as they spar, and despite enjoying coming off as a playboy he often gets insecure and lonely. He's also desperate for Logan's approval even when outright stating that he has almost never told him that he loves him, and has apparently been abused by him in the past. He's also shown that he's much snarter and more capable at business than he seems at first.
* ILoveTheDead: Implied. He wants Tabitha to pretend to be dead when they're trying to have sex, and it fails because she seems too alive.
* InSeriesNickname: "Romulus" and "Rome".
* IntergenerationalFriendship / OddFriendship: With Gerri — she's an older widow who got where she is through wits, guile and hard work; he's a spoiled, self-absorbed rich kid with a host of daddy issues. Yet they do care for one another and have a genuine bond.
* IronicNickname: A mild example. "Roman" is a semi-common name, but the nicknames he has ("Rome" and "Romulus") both reinforce the reference point of Ancient Rome, in which Romulus was the founder of the Roman Empire and in war with his siblings.
* ItsAllAboutMe: In true Roy ComedicSociopathy, he goes against advice and pushes his launch ahead as a "wedding present" to Shiv (which she's not even interested in), leading to a disastrous explosion on the launch pad. When it comes to possible fatalities, he's only concerned about whether or not he'd be culpable for the deaths.
* JerkAss: He loves stirring up trouble and drama, and rips up a million dollar check in front of a young boy's face after taunting him about it.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Maybe not "gold," but he truly does care about his siblings deep down, and rescues Kendall when the latter starts using again. [[spoiler:He also stands up to Logan to try to argue for Kendall to stay after the latter decides that Kendall will take the fall for the cruises scandal, after defending Gerri from the same fate.]]
* ManChild: A thirtysomething who still acts like a petulant, obnoxious, glib teenager (complete with penis-related jokes).
* MayDecemberRomance: In Season 2, he starts a sexual relationship with Gerri, who is old enough to be his mother.
* MiddleChildSyndrome: He is the middle child from Logan's second marriage and, as befits the stereotype, is a rebellious AttentionWhore.
* NightmareFetishist: While the first season teased Roman as being {{asexual}}, season two reveals that Roman is actually only capable of becoming aroused if the situation is somehow "twisted." In his first attempt to have sex with his girlfriend, he insists that she [[ILoveTheDead pretend to be dead]]. Later, he discovers his fondness for masturbating while being verbally degraded.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He initially comes across as a troll with barely a brain cell to spare, but is soon revealed to be shrewd and intelligent (if somewhat lacking in experience and good sense). Roman himself lampshades this: "I'm dumb, but I'm smart".
* PermaStubble: Often sports this as part of his "fashionably disheveled" look.
* PetTheDog:
** Rescues Kendall from a group of hardcore drug addicts. He's too late to stop his brother from falling off the wagon, but he still gets him out before anything worse can happen.
** In a very rare moment of [[SincerityMode sincerity]], he genuinely praises Kendall for his performance on the stand, and follows up by trying to meaningfully reach out to him and Shiv. Unfortunately, his siblings react to this with immature sarcasm.
** He's quite clearly disgusted and immediately objects to [[spoiler: Kendall being chosen for TheScapegoat]].
** He's also against [[spoiler: exposing Kendall's personal problems to the world as a way to destabilize him]].
* PowerfulPeopleAreSubs: Played with. Roman is extremely wealthy and (in theory) powerful, but is constantly mocked and undermined by his family and those around him. He gets out his...frustrations by being mocked and dominated by Gerri and his personal trainer.
* SadClown: A carefree, hedonistic jokester who's lonely, insecure, and terrified of his abusive father.
* SarcasticConfession: Roman makes a tasteless joke about having had a sexual encounter with Gerri the previous night. Gerri, unfazed, rolls her eyes and acts disgusted at the thought. Only the two of them know that Roman wasn't really joking.
* {{Slimeball}}: He actively tries to be as big of a scumbag as possible.
* {{Troll}}: He initially seems to exist only to goad and annoy everyone in the vicinity.
* WouldHitAGirl: Gives Shiv a bitchy slap during one of their arguments though Shiv quickly overpowers him.

[[folder:Connor]]
!!Connor Roy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_connot.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"I ranch, I ride, I earn, and I give. Just like you."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/AlanRuck

-->''"Everyone thinks you're a joke, and you're fucking embarrassing me."''
--->-- '''Logan Roy'''

Relative to the other Roy children, Logan’s eldest son (from his first marriage) is uninterested in the demands of navigating Waystar’s internal politics, instead preferring the libertine lifestyle he leads at his ranch.
----
* AffablyEvil: Connor is a deluded old fool, but he's polite, optimistic and his confidence is oddly endearing.
* AdvertisedExtra: At least for much of the first season it seems to be that. Alan Ruck's name does appears in the opening credits and he's also on the promotional poster but when it comes to the main storyline, Connor doesn't add anything relevant and it's pretty easy to forget about him even though he appears in too many episodes. This is minimized towards season 2 and beyond.
* AndZoidberg: He's not interested in running Waystar-Royco, which makes him a nonfactor in the show's central conflict, and people often forget he exists, with some mistakenly referring to Kendall as the oldest Roy son.
* BeardOfEvil: He sports a goatee whenever he's not clean-shaven.
* ButtMonkey: [[spoiler:In "This is Not for Tears" he is left begging Logan for $100 million because Willa's play left him in serious debt, but Logan's sole condition is that Connor give up his political ambitions, which embarrasses Connor. The same episode has him almost completely forgotten when Gerri mistakenly refers to Kendall as Logan's firstborn son, and when he volunteers to take the fall for the cruises scandal, Logan almost takes pity on him for the useless offer.]]
* CloudCuckooLander: Connor is a strange guy. He's completely out of touch with the real world to the extent that it's almost impossible to get him to come down to Earth, he's prone to latching on to odd topics, he has a number of strange political views and is generally out of the way of the rest of the siblings' interests of cut-throat business and politics. When he does randomly decide to run for president, one of his tenets is being against masturbation for some reason.
* CompensatedDating: His "girlfriend" Willa is an escort he pays to date him.
* ControlFreak: Connor has a controlling streak, having a meltdown when a party doesn't go his way.
* CrazySurvivalist: He waxes on about how the world will soon run out of water, and his need to hoard as much of his as possible to be able to sell it.
* DisappointingOlderSibling: He is, technically, the oldest Roy child, but he is so dimwitted, weird and useless that a lot of people forget he factors into the family at all, and the Eldest Child responsibilities have thus been passed onto Logan's second son, Kendall.
* TheDitz: He's not very bright, to put it simply.
* EccentricMillionaire: He's the only character on the show who chooses to enjoy his supreme wealth - mostly by indulging his odd whims and hobbies.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Connor's first lines are explaining to a child how he's developing a parcel of land and wants to hoard the water on it for himself when the world starts to run out. This touches on Connor's lack of interest in the family business, his mild personality in most situations (talking to a child) and his weird political views.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine.
* HarmlessVillain: He's easily the least effective and malicious of the Roy kids.
* HiddenDepths: Connor is the least relevant of the Roy siblings and the family as a whole treats him like a joke. But in season 3 [[spoiler: he actually shows some depth when Kendall attempts to bring the siblings on his side. He calls them out for ignoring what the family and company were doing on the cruises. His exit from the meeting is followed by the others right after.]]
* ImmediateSelfContradiction: Frequently, since he's thoroughly lacking in self-awareness.
-->'''Connor''': Oh, Shiv, you know I don't like to take sides. ''(beat)'' But I'm on your side.
* KavorkaMan: Downplayed. He's not ugly, but despite being an older, doddering fool, he easily finds himself surrounded by attractive, interesting women, even ones he doesn't have to pay to spend time with.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: He thinks simply being well-read makes him intelligent, when it's clear he doesn't understand much of what he says and can't hold up his side in the simplest of debates. He treats his brief conversation with Gil as an epic debate that he won in crushing fashion, when in reality he just slung a few prosaic insults at Gil until Gil walked away, clearly seeing Connor as not worth his time or effort.
* {{Manchild}}: He's the oldest of the Roy siblings by far but is arguably the most immature and sheltered of them all.
* MayDecemberRomance: His girlfriend Willa is clearly much younger than he is (their actors are thirty-three years apart).
* MellowFellow: Unless he's in a ControlFreak mode, he is very calm, relaxed and genial.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Though he claims to not be confrontational and prefers to be neutral, it doesn't take much to get him involved in petty drama. He also is a ControlFreak with his own agenda, despite framing himself as the most calm, mature sibling.
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: He's easily over 10 years older than the rest of the Roy children (Alan Ruck is twenty-two years older than Jeremy Strong, twenty-six years older than Kieran Culkin and thirty-one years older than Sarah Snook) and has a fairly estranged relationship to them due to this.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob: Unlike his half-siblings, he coasts by on the family's wealth and doesn't hold a job.
* RichReclusesRealm: While all of his siblings live in apartments (in the centre of New York), Connor has a huge ranch in New Mexico. It's normal enough there, but he owns it because he's planning for the inevitable collapse of society and he controls a water source that runs through the property, so he's planning to turn it into one of these.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He has a very oversized view of his intellect and capabilities. In season two, he genuinely believes he has a shot at becoming president and would be capable in such a position, a notion which others try to disabuse him of with limited success.
* TeamSwitzerland: He ''claims'' to be this, as he doesn't factor into the show's central conflict and repeatedly states that he doesn't take sides (only to then promptly take someone's side).
* TokenGoodTeammate: Downplayed but Connor is the only one who avoids the backstabbing and betrayal the rest of the family engage in and is probably the nicest on a personal level.
* {{Trumplica}}: He is a doddering, dimwitted, older white guy with a hot younger girlfriend who came into wealth via inheritance and decides to run for president on an anti-taxing agenda.
* TheUnfavorite: Due to his rather... odd demeanor and ambitions, as well as the age gap between him and the rest of his siblings, he's usually [[ButtMonkey completely forgotten about]], and tolerated at best. Despite being Logan's firstborn son, Logan considers him [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg a complete nonfactor]]. Strangely enough, this means that Logan tends to treat him more kindly than his other children since he's so clearly harmless.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He accidentally escalates the conflict between Kendall and Logan on two separate ocasions:
** In Season 1, he mistakenly assumes that Kendall intends to announce Logan's retirement at the RECNY gala, and informs Logan of the fact. Logan then usurps Kendall's speech and announces that he's staying on as CEO. Kendall, who had merely wanted to make a "he will never retire" joke, is upset at the turn of events and his father's general lack of trust in him, which leads him to try and stage a coup several episodes later.
** At the end of Season 2, he makes fun of Greg for turning down a $250 million offer from Ewan; Greg then [[spoiler:outfits Kendall with the cruise scandal documents that Kendall can use to bring his father down]].
* UpperClassTwit: He's as rich as the rest of the siblings but easily the dumbest and most out-of-touch due to his incredible privilege.

!!!Extended Roy Family & Partners of Family Members

[[folder:Greg]]
!!Gregory "Cousin Greg" Hirsch
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_greg_1.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"I feel like I might not like it in the death pit."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/NicholasBraun

-->''"You little Machiavellian fuck! I see you, Greg. I like it."''
--->-- '''Kendall Roy'''

Greg is the only grandson of Logan's brother Ewan and is thus initially far removed from the Roy family’s wealth. A slacker with no skills or ambitions, he moves to New York to ingratiate himself to Logan and get a stable job within the company — and promptly finds himself embroiled in the succession wars.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: Twice in the first two episodes, belying his BeneathNotice nature; first, Logan introduces him as Cousin Craig, and then he's listed on the Waystar employment records as Greg Roy, because nobody remembers his last name.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Greg seems to have some sort of developmental impairment that resembles autism, though it's not clear if he is actually on the spectrum, mentally deficient, or just slow and foolish. He's socially awkward, bad at picking up social cues, gullible and easily manipulated. These traits all get exacerbated when he's under stress, such as when he's being browbeaten by the Roy clan. However, he's also not exactly stupid and is well aware when he's doing something wrong.
* AudienceSurrogate: As the only middle-class main character and a NaiveNewcomer to the family drama, he is the audience surrogate for the succession wars.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: He's the youngest character in the main cast, which, coupled with his NaiveNewcomer status, ensures that nobody takes him seriously.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: One of the reasons behind his decision to [[spoiler:side with his roommate/cousin Kendall]] in the finale of Season 2.
* BeneathNotice: He is considered a doof by all other characters, which works to his advantage time and again as nobody expects him to be a real threat. The first time he shows his ruthless side is when he betrays Tom's plan to go public with the cruise crimes scandal to Gerri; even though Tom only shared this information with Shiv and Greg, he believes Greg over Shiv. By the end of Season 2, Greg is a pivotal player in the family's succession wars.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Greg, of all people, becomes one of the most pivotal players in the second season finale. [[spoiler:After worrying about the damning files all season, and saving a few from Tom's destruction in a very un-Roy moment of wanting to do the right thing, he ends up siding with Kendall and releasing the records. (Being able to inherit hundreds of millions from his grandfather again doesn't hurt, either)]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's seen as a harmless goof by pretty much everyone and such a view is not unjustified but he regularly shows he's smarter and craftier than he appears.
* BigLittleBrother: He's a cousin rather than a brother to the Roy children, but the trope is played straight otherwise: he is the youngest of the main characters and also the tallest, at 6'7''.
* BigOlEyebrows: He's got 'em.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Compared to the sociopathic Roys, he's a sweet kid — but he's not above deceit, blackmail and milking his extended family for money.
* {{Blackmail}}: He turns out to have quite a talent for this.
* BrilliantButLazy: He starts as a twenty something who can't even hold on to a low level job but he proves himself surprisingly smart and crafty when he needs to be.
* BullyAndWimpPairing: With Tom, where Greg is the wimp. Even though Tom abuses his authority over Greg, the two are often a united front thanks to their shared [[CommonalityConnection outsider status]] within the family.
* ButtMonkey: Nobody really hates him, but no one really cares about him, either, not helped by his slow and unimpressive demeanor. Tom also frequently has him doing embarrassing dirty work, such as forcing him to shred sensitive documents after Greg had already driven twelve agonizing hours to get his belligerent grandfather to Thanksgiving dinner.
* TheChewToy: His low position in the Roy hierarchy ensures that he's constantly humiliated, overlooked, and made the scapegoat, and in general it seems that even the universe conspires to put him into uncomfortable situations.
** In season 1, he's constantly ridiculed and embarrassed by Tom; his grandfather forces him to eat a second dinner of unappetizing noodles against his protests; and he attends a "hellish" bachelor party in which he's manipulated into ingesting too much cocaine, fearing he's going to die.
** In season 2, he's shown a apartment with ceilings so low that he bangs his head into them; he accidentally says too much in an interview and sweats about being outed as the "leak"; he's one of several people forced to play "boar on the floor", and forced to testify in front of a Senate subcommittee in spite of being monumentally unqualified.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Has a tendency to wander off into strange thoughts. When in a panic room in the second season, he becomes increasingly anxious of the room's design, thinking that antagonists could fit an "attack child" through a window.
* CommonalityConnection: His outsider status saddles him with the company of Tom, another SocialClimber within the Roy extended family.
* CorruptTheCutie: Tom drags Greg into the cruise crimes conspiracy, effectively "infecting" Greg with the "virus" of being complicit in the cover-up. This is a turning point for Greg, who, until that moment, could have possibly avoided the slide into a life of douchebaggery.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Much like Tom, he seems harmlessly incompetent, but he's actually a very good schemer when the situation calls for it.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the underdog slacker hero. His character arc shows that it's impossible to keep pace (let alone succeed) in a cutthroat world without resorting to amoral behavior.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: He is so touch-starved that at one point in Season Two he gets a haircut for the following reason:
-->'''Greg''': I just wanted someone to touch my head, you know. Soothing.
* DominanceThroughFurniture: Tom's tactics to assert his authority at ATN is making "human furniture" or "footstooling" his employees (putting his feet up on their backs). He does so to Jonah and tries to encourage Greg to join in. All the "normal" people in the room are horrified when it comes out that Tom does this in the Senate hearing.
* DumbassHasAPoint: He's completely correct in his assertion that the so-called "safe room" he shares with Tom is "just a room" and not remotely safe. He slightly diffuses his moment of clarity by later suggesting that an "attack child" could slip through the window and presumably murder him.
* DumbassNoMore: Over the course of the first two seasons, he learns to leverage his knowledge of the Roys' secrets and his BeneathNotice status to advance and secure his position within Waystar.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Greg the Egg.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In his first scenes he suffers a bad reaction to pot, gets fired from a low-level GoofySuit job at an amusement park as a result, and tries to unsuccessfully blame the situation on a contact high. This establishes him as a slacker, a loser and a ConsummateLiar.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He will wheedle and blackmail his way into the Roys' money, but he takes umbrage at the idea of working for right-wing news.
* ExtremeDoormat: Seriously, he can be pressed and guilted into doing just about anything.
* FishOutOfWater: He sticks out like a sore thumb among the super-wealthy Roys, and not just because he's so tall.
* GeekPhysiques: Of the tall, gangly variety.
* GeniusDitz: His awkwardness is a social problem rather than an intellectual problem. He's not exactly brilliant, but he's cunning enough to take Tom by surprise and adapting more quickly to their eat-or-be-eaten world than Tom expects. He's also apparently the only family member who knows anything about computers.
* GoofySuit: He starts the series with a job as a mascot at one of Waystar-Royco's theme parks, and wears the requisite suit during his introductory scenes.
* GrewASpine: Part of his character arc is learning to stand up to Tom's abuse.
* HiddenDepths: He's a lot savvier and more suited to the cutthroat world of business than he seems.
* InadequateInheritor: Ewan Roy threatens to disinherit Greg if he continues to work for Logan.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Has big, mooning blue eyes, and is generally the most naive and good-hearted Roy (in comparison to the rest of the family).
* InSeriesNickname: Greg the Egg, as well as (less embarrassingly) Cousin Greg; the latter is how both TV critics and fans normally refer to him as well.
* ManChild: Prior to the start of the show, he's a twentysomething slacker with no marketable skills and no ability or desire to keep a job.
* MommasBoy: His mother is the one who gives him the idea to ingratiate himself to the Roys, and throughout Season 1 he consults her over the phone whenever he's faced with a challenge.
* NaiveNewcomer: Greg is Logan's grandnephew, but he grew up in a middle-class setting and had little interaction with Logan's side of the family until his mother sends him to New York, which lands him smack dab in the middle of the family drama.
* {{Neet}}: At the beginning of the show he's a twentysomething slacker with no marketable skills or career prospects.
* NiceGuy: In comparison to the Roys, Greg is practically a saint. Even after he starts sacrificing his morals to swim with the Roys, he never shows any of the family's wrath or sadism.
* NiceToTheWaiter: In a direct contrast to Tom, he isn't an asshole towards service workers — a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment reveals he spent the night before Shiv's wedding hanging out with Andrew, the waiter who [[spoiler:Kendall later accidentally kills]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He fully leans into his slow, ditzy, wide-eyed persona, but he is actually calculating and quietly ruthless BeneathTheMask.
* OddCouple: He's in a ThoseTwoGuys duo with Tom, with whom he shares a CommonalityConnection as relative outsiders to the rest of the Roys.
* OpportunisticBastard: He is constantly hitching rides on the shoulders of more powerful people, first aligning himself with Tom [[spoiler:and then ditching him for Kendall when the opportunity presents itself]].
* PluckyComicRelief: He is awkwardly amusing, and his storylines are more light-hearted than what the other characters get.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: The only way he knows how to get ahead is being something of a suck-up and begging for jobs.
* RagsToRiches: Greg is a jobless loser at the start of the show, though he comes from, at worst, a middle-class home and has a rich grandfather. Compared to the Roys, however, he's a pauper, so when he starts associated with them, it's a huge shift in his fortunes.
* SentOffToWorkForRelatives: What lands Greg in the Roys' orbit in the beginning, and it actually happens twice in the pilot. He's gotten a job he doesn't deserve at one of the Canadian theme parks that the Roys run due to his name, but gets fired on the first day for smoking weed. His mom forcefully sends him off to New York to beg for his job back or get another one, which he does.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: Over the first two seasons, he starts wearing suits that actually fit him, showing that he's slowly becoming more comfortable in the world of the rich.
* TheSlacker: His work ethic is very, very bad.
* SpockSpeak: His speech is often slow and emotionless, and he can randomly start speaking in formal terms, even when the situation doesn't call for that.
-->'''Greg''': I merely wish to answer in an affirmative fashion.
-->'''Gil Eavis''': You can speak to us normally.
-->'''Greg''': So I shall.
* TheStoner: His first scene has him fired from a very low-level job due to him getting high right beforehand.
* SurpassedTheTeacher: By the end of Season 2, he seems to be besting his "mentor" Tom when it comes to playing the Roy game of one-upmanship and backstabbing.
* ThoseTwoGuys: He gradually forms this dynamic with Tom.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Only inasmuch as he's not as terrible as Logan Roy and his brood, and seems to have a grasp on morals, however tenuous.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: The Cajun chicken linguini at California Pizza Kitchen.
* WardrobeFlawOfCharacterization: Lampshaded in-universe: he wears deck shoes to his first day at Waystar and is promptly chewed out by Tom for not knowing how to dress himself.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: He and Tom come to think of each other as friends, which doesn't stop the mutual wariness, deception and blackmailing.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: He successfully blackmails Tom in Season 2 and is not happy when Tom expresses his admiration of that.

[[folder:Tom]]
!!Tom Wambsgans
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_tom2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"Underneath, we're all just little nudie turtles."'']]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/MatthewMacfadyen

-->''"Greg, I'm gonna celebrate you. New title, a ton more money, a nice new office. You're movin' up. You can throw away the training bra. A seat at the big table. You like that? Yeah?"''
--->-- '''Tom Wambsgans'''

Tom, Shiv’s boyfriend (later husband), is infatuated with the Roy family’s power and prestige. Employed in a senior position at Waystar, he pursues acceptance from his wife's family, often humiliating himself in the process.
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: He shows no interest in any other woman except Shiv and no men...except he's very, very attached to Greg. The first thing he does when he meets him is try to bully him, asking if he'd hiss him, and he's very jealous when Greg moves in with Kendall.
* ArsonMurderAndAdmiration: Responds this way when he realizes that Greg is blackmailing him, using crucial documents that could land him in prison against him. He's genuinely proud that he's showing initiative and savvy, even going so far as to encourage him by offering Greg more than he is demanding.
* {{Bridezilla}}: He gets really, ''really'' into figuring out the details of the wedding, and is horrible towards the wedding planner.
-->'''Tom:''' Not to be a groomzilla, but...
* BullyAndWimpPairing: With Greg, where Tom is the bully. Even though Tom likes to assert his dominance over Greg, he does care for him, and the two often stick together thanks to their shared [[CommonalityConnection outsider status]] within the family.
* ButtMonkey: To the Roys; he is below everyone except Greg in the family pecking order.
* CampStraight: A (presumably straight) sneering metrosexual with a fondness for dress balls and pastel colors.
* CommonalityConnection: He and Greg are both outsiders among the Roys.
* ConspicuousConsumption: He thinks this is the best way to look rich, when in reality such behavior only underscores the fact that he's "new money".
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Much like his underling Greg, he seems harmlessly incompetent, but he's a very good schemer when his back is against the wall.
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Shiv is very obviously settling for him, as her only reason for being with him is that he's "a good guy". Even on their wedding day, she only says, "You're a great guy, and I like hanging out with you," in comparison to Tom, who is so overwhelmed by his love for ''her'' that he cuts his speech short.
* TheDogBitesBack: While he allows himself to be run roughshod by the entire Roy family, he has his limits - notably snapping back at and humiliating Shiv's lover at their wedding reception before having him leave the premises. He becomes more tired of Shiv treating him like a pawn in Season 2, even telling her to fuck off when she goes too far mocking him during a dinner. [[spoiler:By the season finale, he's had enough with Shiv's antics and even tells her he's considering leaving her.]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: He behaves this way around the Roys, but takes out his insecurities in an ugly way on anyone who is beneath him in standing.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He makes clear to Greg that he doesn't actually believe any of ATN's right-wing rhetoric and sees it simply as a stepping stone. He's also visibly uncomfortable when Mark Ravenhead heavily implies that he's a Nazi sympathizer and Holocaust denier.
-->'''Tom:''' Have you ever read Mein Kampf?
-->'''Mark Ravenhead:''' Ehhhh, yeahhhh? Couple times, I guess.
-->'''Tom:''' Couple times? Were there easter eggs in there you didn't get the first time?
* ExtremeDoormat: He meekly accepts and shoulders much of the criticism that the Roys place upon him, and is especially [[HenpeckedHusband cowed by Shiv]]. By the end of season 2, he's finally starting to push back a little.
* HenpeckedHusband: He is henpecked ''hard'' even before he marries Shiv.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Definitely has shades of this with Greg.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Though he can be very abrasive, self-serving and bullying, he really does care for Shiv and wants to be part of the family, and is genuinely hurt when he realizes she's cheating on him and refuses to admit it. Even Logan tells Shiv he's a good man.
** Despite his abuse, he also grows to care for Greg's well-being. In what is Tom's most selfless act on the show, he protects Greg (at actual detriment to his own position in the family) from Logan's wrath after Greg inadvertently betrays his great-uncle to a biographer writing a tell-all book.
** He chooses to learn about Waystar's illegal activities — when not doing so would have kept him off the hook in a potential scandal — and is then the only character who contemplates doing "the right thing" and making the information public. Also, in marked contrast to Shiv, he is backing Sanderesque presidential candidate Gil Eavis out of idealism.
* LargeAndInCharge: Inverted. He's the tallest character in the show after Greg but the two are at the bottom of the pecking order and are regularly reminded of that fact.
* LargeHam: He can be quite over the top when he wants to be.
* LoveForgivesAllButLust: Downplayed. Throughout Season 1, Tom worships Shiv. While it is also accompanied by her realization that she would like to take over Waystar-Royco which pushes Tom further from her, he is deeply wounded that she asked for an open marriage [[KickTheDog on their wedding night.]]
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Where Shiv is ruthless and calculating, he is, at heart, soft and sentimental. He also likes pastel colors, and his ultimate childhood dream was to attend a fancy ball.
* MinnesotaNice: He grew up in St. Paul and is saddled with the requisite Midwestern politeness, with a lot of his jabs cloaked in passive aggression (although he does let loose with Greg). His behavior is obviously passed down from his parents, who brush off apologies for being late to pick them up at the airport by saying that they had "great fun" sitting around for hours.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Inverted. Tom's internal scumminess shows through his mild facade whenever he's given power over others.
* NotWithThemForTheMoney: Zig-zagged; he's a SocialClimber and very obviously enamored with the Roy wealth, but his feelings for Shiv are genuine.
* OddCouple: He's in a ThoseTwoGuys duo with Greg, as both are relative outsiders to the rest of the Roys.
* PetTheDog: For all his flaws, he does come to genuinely like and care for Greg.
* PlausibleDeniability: Tom runs into this when a key member of his staff retires and reveals that he's been covering up extremely illegal activities by the company. Tom has to choose whether to learn about the activities so he can keep them covered up, or to avoid learning about them so he has plausible deniability when they come to light. He ultimately chooses to learn about them...and promptly [[CorruptTheCutie involves Greg]] in the whole mess as well.
* PungeonMaster: His best-known line might just be "You can't make a Tomlette without breaking some Greggs".
* PyrrhicVictory: Tom ends up getting what he theoretically wanted at the beginning of Season 1: he's married to Shiv, he has the pick of jobs...and Shiv ends up chipping away at his love for her to the point where he considers leaving her, and he's deeply unhappy with the knowledge he's gained about Waystar.
* RankUp: A plot point, as his ascension up the corporate ladder early in the series (to Head of Cruises) saddles him with the highly unwelcome knowledge of Waystar's crime coverups.
* TheScapegoat: It becomes apparent that Logan (and the Waystar-Royco board) plan on Tom being this for the cruise ship scandal. [[spoiler:The only reason it doesn't happen is that Shiv finally stands up for him.]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: He never shows even a smidgen of interest in any woman rather than Shiv. When Shiv arranges a threesome with another woman, he doesn't want the other woman to participate and asks that she watch him and Shiv have sex instead.
* {{Slimeball}}: Overtly-sycophantic, sneaky, manipulative, and not as sophisticated as he thinks he is.
* SocialClimber: Shiv's ex notes that he's some nobody from the Midwest, and he's very interested in climbing up the ladder of the company and even considers taking Shiv's last name for reasons obviously unrelated to equality (though he is marrying for love).
* SoProudOfYou: He is actually impressed with Greg when the latter blackmails him, although Greg is [[YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame not happy with this reaction]].
* TheSvengali: ''Attempts'' to be this to Greg, taking him under his wing in both business and social mentorship, but mainly keeping him around as a resource to exploit for his own goals. However, he does at times seem to be genuinely misguided in [[UnwantedAssistance thinking that he's also helping Greg]] out by doing this.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's got the looks for this (fitting as his actor once played Mr Darcy who was this trope incarnate) though his personality is the opposite of what this trope usually entails.
* TantrumThrowing: When Greg wants to break up with him (professionally), Tom takes it very badly, first tearing up and then pelting Greg with water bottles while shouting at him.
* TrappedInVillainy: Once he learns about the company's dark secrets, Tom's first instinct is to come clean about the situation as a way of producing reform while saving the company's reputation. He is stopped, however, once it becomes clear to him that elements within the Roys' inner circle aim to shut down the possibility, and the second season has him frantically scrubbing any trace of evidence about it while actively helping the cover-up.
* WardrobeFlawOfCharacterization: Much like his ConspicuousConsumption tendencies, Tom's wardrobe is too try-hard — his shoes are too shiny and his ties match his pocket squares. The Roys insult him by calling him "a divorce attorney from the Twin Cities".
* WhosLaughingNow: Tom to Shiv's lover at his wedding. After a season of the latter mocking him both behind his back and in front of it, Tom takes no little pleasure in utterly humiliating him at the reception before having him escorted out.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: He and Greg come to think of each other as friends, which doesn't stop the mutual wariness, deception and blackmailing.

->'''Portrayed By:''' Natalie Gold

Though Rava cares for her estranged husband, Kendall, she has remained separated from him while being the primary caretaker of their children.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''R'''ava '''R'''oy.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Rava is a popular Indian name, and her and Kendall's daughter Sophie appears to be South Asian.
* AmicableExes: With Kendall, for the most part. They're civil with each other, they flirt a little, and they both want to put the kids first.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Kendall reveals that she's been trying to screw him over in court despite playing nice and flirting with him in public.
* PutOnABus: Despite being a big part of Kendall's life in the first season, she's entirely absent from the second aside from an occasional mention by Kendall.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_willa.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"You know, nothing's more powerful than art."'']]

Connor Roy's young "girlfriend" (actually his escort) who aspires to be a playwright and is a former call girl.
----
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Willa is generally a good-natured, agreeable person and her silent acceptance of the Roys' frequent snide comments might suggest she's something of a doormat. She's actually more motivated and strong-willed than she might appear; she ruthlessly snaps back at Tom after he makes a dig at her status as a call girl.
* ButtMonkey: The siblings all openly detest and deride her, which she pretty has to just...take in stride.
* GoldDigger: A more obvious example than usual; Connor literally pays her to be his girlfriend.
* HiddenDepths: She's far from an idiot golddigger; she has genuine aspirations for her own career, and she shows more talent for political maneuvering than hopeful presidential candidate Connor, rewriting his speech at Mo's funeral so that it speaks neither [[SpeakIllOfTheDead ill]] nor well of the old predator.
* HighClassCallGirl: She's paid to spend time with Connor, and by the looks of her, she doesn't come cheap.
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Played with. She's clearly not above entertaining Connor's false hopes if it means she can get the money to pursue her own goal, but she's generally well-meaning, such as being one of the few to be nice to [[ButtMonkey Greg]] and showing genuine interest in Logan's war memorabilia.
* MayDecemberRomance: She's clearly much younger than Connor (Justine Lupe is thirty-three years younger than Alan Ruck).
* NiceGirl: She's a pretty good-natured person, all things considered.
* RomanticFakeRealTurn: Implied throughout Season 2. Although firmly subverted in Season 1, where Connor seems to hope this will happen but it doesn't, and he has to wheedle her to move in with him, she refers to him as looking "hot" in his campaign video, and she shows genuine concern in his welfare.
* TerribleArtist: She's really not that great at writing, so it's no surprise she never found much success.

!Waystar Royco

[[folder:Frank]]
!!Frank Vernon
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_frank.jpg]]
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/PeterFriedman

Logan’s longtime confidant and chief operating officer of Waystar Royco.
----
* AffablyEvil: Frank is easily the most personally pleasant employee of Waystar Royco; he's mild-mannered, cultured, honest and witty. He's also loyal to a media monster and is willing to enact his wishes regardless of the ethical considerations.
* TheBusCameBack: After being fired for his part in the attempted coup, Logan brings him back in to negotiate a deal with the Pierces, because they were charmed by his Shakespeare recitations.
* ButtMonkey: Frank really does ''not'' have the best time working for Waystar Royco. After being a loyal advisor to Logan for decades and someone who considers Logan a friend, he's fired unceremoniously in the very first episode to make way for Roman, who he got stuck babysitting for months and who now irrationally hates Frank. From that point on, he's trapped in the orbit of the Roy family, seemingly unable to cut himself loose.
-->'''Gerri:''' He said he offered you your job back.
-->'''Frank:''' Yeah. I'm considering.
-->'''Gerri:''' ''Why?''
-->'''Frank:''' I need money to pay someone to kill a guy in Palermo. Baby needs shoes, moth to a flame... ''I don't know''.
* TheConsigliere: He is a trusted long-time associate of Logan and often serves as a not-always-heeded voice of reason.
* ExtremeDoormat: When it comes to the Roys, he lets them run roughshod over him. Roman constantly insults and tries to oust him, but Frank never responds. Logan is also erratic when it comes to how he treats Frank.
* NiceGuy: He's soft-spoken, polite and easy to get along with.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Frank's intelligence and education comes through most vividly through his use of language.
-->'''Frank:''' Shareholder meeting in two-and-a-half weeks. I mean, we are unusually subject to the vicissitudes of public opinion.
-->'''Karl:''' Uh, I can translate. That's Frank for "We're fucked".
* ServileSnarker: He's a little too submissive to be as openly snarker as Gerri or even Karl, but he's got a sharp sense of humor all the same.
-->'''Frank:''' Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Cruise Dirty Sex Fuck Cover-up Party?
* StraightMan: Frank is one of the more even-tempered and rational characters, often offering a sensible appraisal and solution. He also tends not to bite when it comes to Logan's antics.
* WickedCultured: He's fond of Shakespeare, to Logan's irritation. Not to mention he throws casual references to Coriolanus in conversation and says he internally recites Eliot’s “Prufrock” to calm his nerves before speeches.

[[folder:Gerri]]
!!Gerri Kellman
->'''Portrayed By:''' Creator/JSmithCameron
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/succession_gerry.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"I work for Waystar, not Logan Roy."'']]

General counsel to Waystar Royco.
----
* AffablyEvil: So affable that it's easy to forget about the "evil" part, but while Gerri can be nice, levelheaded, and she's extremely intelligent, she is also one of the main participants in the Roy coverup of serial sex offences, and she compiles some of the most evil ideas (such as the collateral against rape victims).
* BreakoutCharacter: She was initially supposed to appear in 5-6 episodes of Season One, but instead appears in all but the pilot and is promoted to the main cast for Season Two.
* CoolOldLady: She can usually maneuver competently around Logan, such as not having to be a "boar on the floor" despite admitting to opposing his desire to acquire PGN.
* DeadpanSnarker: Gerri has a sharp tongue and typically spars with Roman, to their mutual enjoyment.
* {{Dominatrix}}: Her sexual relationship with Roman consists of her verbally humiliating him while he masturbates.
* EnemyMine: She and Roman initially bond over their shared opposition to Logan's plan to acquire PGM.
* FakeGuestStar: J. Smith Cameron is credited as a guest starrer in Season 1 although she's in every episode except the pilot.
* GenderBlenderName: According to a J. Smith-Cameron interview, the character was initially supposed to be a man.
* LovableTraitor: A subdued example in comparison to Stewie. Gerri betrays Kendall after promising him she'd stand up for him in the meeting, and she is prone to work against Logan then pretend not to have done, but in a nest of vipers like Waystar-Royco, it's hard to hold this too hard against her.
* MayDecemberRomance: Her mentorship with Roman [[WillTheyOrWontThey ambiguously]] crosses into this territory, with him being aroused by Gerri's criticism. When she realizes Roman is masturbating during their phone call, [[NotSoAboveItAll she is taken aback but nonetheless consentually plays along]].
* OddFriendship: With Roman, who she does truly seem to care for. She's an older widow who got where she is through wits, guile and hard work. He's a spoiled, self-absorbed rich kid with a host of daddy issues. Yet, they do care for one another and have a genuine bond. After a particularly humiliating incident, she gives him sincere advice that motivates him throughout Season 2. Usually, Roman doesn't take advice from anyone.
* OnlySaneMan: She‘s one of the smartest and most put-together characters on the show.
* PlayingBothSides: Her most common tactic, and presumably how she's survived at Waystar Royco for such a long time. It's supremely ironic when Logan praises her as being more loyal than anyone.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: In Season 2, after appearing in every Season 1 episode save for the pilot.
* ServileSnarker: She will frequently snark at Roman and Kendall, and she'll even snark at ''Logan'', but she is so calm when she does so that she flies under his radar.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Waystar. When it comes to individuals, she is always PlayingBothSides, but when it comes to the company itself, she is very committed to keeping it running.
* {{Workaholic}}: Her identity is built around her love of her job, although we hear about her off-screen daughters.

Waystar Royco's Chief Financial Officer and a member of the company's legal team.
----
* AffablyEvil: Not a good person, but he does have a genuine amiability to him.
* AintTooProudToBeg: When Logan plays "Boar on the Floor" Karl is quick to oink for his sausage while even Tom is hesitant.
* BlondesAreEvil: He is blond and a terrible person.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: He's the Chief Financial Officer, but the principle is the same considering how staggeringly amoral he is.
* DirtyCoward: While Roman and Laird joke about to pass the time during their hostage situation, Karl proceeds to have a panic attack and is quick to obey his captors without thinking it through.
* DirtyOldMan: Karl is past middle age and is said to frequent brothels whenever he goes on business trips. He protests that his wife understands that he's a "libertine."
* {{Slimeball}}: He is, at heart, a self-serving weasel who cheats on his wife with such regularity it's a running joke and who's willing to offer up virtually anyone if it'll save himself.

To make matters worse, her underling Hugo is working in subtle ways to undermine her with an eye to taking her job.
* OhCrap: [[spoiler:When Kendall goes rogue and calls out Logan in a press conference, Karolina's expression is truly something to behold. She jumps into panic mode and starts calling everyone.]]
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: In Season 2, after recurring heavily for much of Season 1.

* AmoralAttorney: Hugo's just doing his job at the end of the day, but he's pretty merciless when it comes to executing that job. He advises on how to cover up a huge scandal, tries to get Tom through the hearings by using stall tactics, and readily suggests sacrificing loyal employees of Waystar Royco to the media frenzy.
* DeadpanSnarker: He's a quick-witted, snarky guy in general but special mention must go to his gem of a line, uttered to Shiv as he witnesses Tom blunder his way through a congressional hearing:
-->''"What's it like being married to a man with two assholes?"''
* LeanAndMean: He has a slender frame and even Logan considers him to be a ruthless piece of work.
* OhCrap: [[spoiler:Hugo's expression turns ashen when confronted with Marcia and her lawyer, both of whom are very aware that Logan is in a position of serious weakness.]]
* ProfessionalButtKisser: He's good at subtlely

* AffablyEvil: He is selfish and utterly lacking in empathy or principles, but also unfailingly cheerful and fun to hang out with.
* BeardOfEvil: Neatly bearded and a self-serving, amoral scumbag.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's introduced as Kendall's coke-snorting PoisonousFriend, but he's far more savvy than he appears.
* CardCarryingVillain: He will be the first to admit that he's playing both sides and is not to be trusted.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Switches sides at the drop of a hat, though, to his credit, he is upfront about this deficiency of character.

* FunctionalAddict: He's a frequent user of cocaine, but it doesn't seem to impair him.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Despite already betraying Kendall more than once, Stewy gets very upset that his friend would do the same to him.
* MouthOfSauron: For Sandy Furness, who rarely appears in person. Stewy is trusted to communicate Sandy's wishes and make deals on his behalf.
* NoSell: Perhaps his most impressive moment comes when he makes it abundantly clear to Logan that [[spoiler:his usual tactic of being a blustery, borderline violent bully simply won't cut it in the cold, money-driven modern world. * OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The only time he's not totally calm and reserved is when he first sees Kendall after he backs out of their deal. Stewy actually reveals himself to be genuinely hurt that Ken would exit a seemingly perfect arrangement and drops his sarcasm to ask why he did it, only getting more upset when he doesn't get an answer.
* OpportunisticBastard: He is a parasite constantly piggybacking off other people's success and influence. Even his ''job'' as a private equity shark is centered around benefiting off other people's failures.
* PetTheDog: He is not a great friend to Kendall, but he does attempt to half-heartedly comfort him after seeing how out-of-sorts his old friend is.
* PlayingBothSides: At any given moment, he backs whoever seems to be poised to win.
* PoisonousFriend: His ideas constantly land Kendall in hot water, though he never really has to face the consequences.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: In Season 2. He gets demoted from the main cast in Season 3, but he still appears in the opening credits with guest star billing.
* SmugSmiler: He is never seen without a shit-eating grin on his face, and is quick with a smarmy, nasty quip.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He and Kendall do hang out a lot, despite Kendall distrusting Stewy and generally thinking little of him.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He's introduced as one of Kendall's oldest and most trusted friends, but gradually over the course of the show, the two become bitter enemies due to some mutual back-stabbing instigated by Stewy.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: His and Kendall's friendship is marred by ChronicBackstabbingDisorder on both sides, and the two of them mostly only create problems for each other.

The CEO of Vaulter, a digital media company that Kendall acquires at the start of the show.
----
* AdvertisedExtra: He is given main character credit in both seasons, but he appears in about a third of the episodes in both and disappears for long periods of time.
* ButNotTooGay: While he is shown in bed with a man and takes a man, presumably his husband, to meet Roman, he's never shown engaging in anything physical or even discussing his personal life.
* CommutingOnABus: He is ostensibly a member of the main cast, but he gets very little screentime in either season and is absent from the plot for large chunks of time.
* InscrutableOriental: He makes his disdain clear to Kendall in private, but he doesn't want to be part of Waystar Royco and it means that he presents himself as totally unreadable by them.
* {{Karma}}: Lawrence gets cold feet and [[spoiler: betrays Kendall at the vote against Logan, causing Kendall to be fired and spurring his downward spiral]]. This of course results in [[spoiler: Kendall finding his way back under his dad’s influence, personally acting on his father’s orders to gut Lawrence’s company]].
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: In the second episode, he is the one to tell Kendall that his father has just had a brain hemorrage. While Kendall reels in shock, Lawrence delivers the kicker: “You invited me into the chicken coup, and without Daddy involved, I’m going to eat you one by fucking one.”
* NotSoStoic: When Waystar starts looking to mess with Vaulter’s books and Kendall hints Logan is trying to strip the company, Lawrence is visibly shaken and nervous. After Kendall [[spoiler: guts Vaulter on his dad’s order]] Lawrence devolves into confused anger.
* SitcomArchnemesis: To Kendall, who he has a very testy relationship with.
* SmugSnake: Lawrence has this personality in certain business altercations.
* StraightGay: He is shown in bed with a man when Kendall calls him during night hours and brings him to a bar with Roman. (It is, however, also possible he is [[AmbiguouslyBi bisexual]]).
* TechBro: He's a fairly young man who runs a huge digital media company that Kendall acquires, but possesses a heft of quiet confidence as well as regarding the Roys as shallow dinosaurs.
* TwoferTokenMinority: Asian and non-heterosexual.
* VisualMetaphor: He tells Kendall that he'd never do business with the Roys, then steps into the elevator and rubs sanitizer on his hands, literally washing his hands of the family.
