* UnderestimatingBadassery: Palpatine's constant underestimation of Obi-Wan Kenobi has allowed the Jedi Master to both [[SpannerInTheWorks knowingly and unknowingly sabotage his plans]]. To recap, Obi-Wan bisected his first apprentice Maul, helped prevent the Republic's occupation of Mandalore, survived Order 66 and dismembered Anakin which made his Force potential much weaker, and protected and trained Luke into becoming the Jedi who would eventually redeem Anakin and convince him to betray Palpatine. If Palpatine took Obi-Wan much more seriously, he would still be alive and the Empire would've continued thriving.

** A production-wise yet canonical example. During the first time (production-wise) we see Palpatine in ''The Empire Strikes Back'', Darth Vader is kneeling before him. Darth Vader, the [[TheDreaded scary]], [[OneManArmy powerful]], [[ArrogantKungFuGuy takes-crap-from-no-one]] Dark Lord, is seen ''kneeling'' before someone. This firmly establishes Palpatine as an even greater evil in the galaxy.

* EvilOldFolks: He's in his sixties during the Prequel Trilogy and ''The Clone Wars'', his eighties during the Original Trilogy and is well over a hundred years old in the Sequel Trilogy, in addition to being the most diabolical sociopath the Galaxy has seen in a long time. Thanks to transferring his spirit to a clone body, he was ''119 years old'' at the time of his second death. According to WordOfGod, he has absolutely no redeeming qualities.

** ''The Bad Batch'' has his subordinates running things while he remains in the background as an overarching presence. Palpatine's one in-person appearance, where he swiftly discards the BigBad for the series up to that point then reverses the heroes' victory by [[ManipulativeBastard twisting its narrative into public support for his plan]] without missing a beat, establish him as something FAR beyond what the heroes have any hope of directly contending against.

* UngratefulBastard: Being the heartless sociopath that he is, any "gratitude" Palpatine displays is ultimately just a part of his façade. The Jedi saved his life and rescued him multiple times during the Clone Wars, and none of this ever deterred him from his conspiracy to execute Order 66 and wipe them out. His grand plan to destroy the Jedi would have never gotten as far as it did without Dooku's complicity, and in the end, Sidious discards Tyranus in favor of Anakin being his next apprentice. The clone troopers were designed to carry out Order 66 through the bio-chips implanted in them, and proved vital to the rise of his Empire; after their purpose is served, not only does he swiftly throw them under the bus by using Tipoca City's destruction to fearmonger the Senate against them, but he ultimately condemns them to a miserable fate by leaving out the pensions and retirement benefits that Senator Chuchi fought for them to have.

* VideoWills: A more sinister example; immediately following his first death during the Battle of Endor, Sentinel Droids were sent to select Imperial officers, such as Garrick Versio and Lerr Duvat to deliver a posthumous message in which Palpatine would order the initiation of Operation: Cinder, an orbital bombardment campaign targeting various planets designed as a means to punish the Empire for their failure to prevent him from dying.

* WiseOldFolkFacade: His persona as Chancellor Palpatine is a wise, grandfatherly old man, and it's this facade that he uses to earn the public's trust, as well as foster a relationship with the young and impressionable Anakin for over 13 years so he can groom him into eventually becoming his apprentice. Even after his appearance becomes disfigured after his duel with Mace Windu and becoming Galactic Emperor, he uses a holographic disguise to maintain the facade of a kindly old man and is portrayed as such in propaganda so as to not alarm the public with his true appearance as the wicked and frightening Darth Sidious.

** This trope is why Palpatine could ''never'' be a Jedi, and chose the Sith instead in the first place: Not only does Palpatine lack so many of the personality traits needed to be a Jedi - selflessness, service, forgiveness, a sense of duty to others - but that Palpatine cannot understand the notion of somebody with considerable Force powers ''not'' wanting to rule the galaxy and its countless non-Force-sensitive inhabitants.

Even after his apparent demise at the hands of the Skywalker family, he was able to use his unnatural abilities with the Force to maintain his consciousness in a clone body -- albeit a decaying one that had to be hooked up to machinery -- where he spent several decades overseeing a new plan. He would seek revenge on those who had defeated him, create a new order where the act of rebellion was impossible, and achieve true immortality to rule it forever. He would once again be defeated, not just by his own granddaughter, who would reject him and accept the Skywalker family as her own, and not just by the last surviving member of the Skywalker bloodline, who had once been corrupted by the Dark Side through one of his own creations and was now redeemed, but by a fleet of ships led both by soldiers and ordinary citizens who would ensure that his Empire would die with him.

* AdaptationalVillainy: Despite the very few positive traits he's gained in canon, in other ways, Palpatine's even ''worse'', most notably seen in the case of Operation: Cinder, a half-decade long campaign of orbital bombardment and mass genocide of his own Imperial-aligned worlds, including the attempted destruction of his homeworld Naboo, as a form of "punishment" for the Empire not preventing his death at the hands of Vader. By contrast in ''Legends'' while he was apathetic to the idea of a SuccessionCrisis happening if he died, he never had a plan [[TakingYouWithMe to take the empire down with him]].
* AdaptationalWimp: In ''Legends'', he is so unfathomably powerful, that in the ''Revenge of the Sith'' novelization, Yoda quickly figures out that '''he's not even close''' to Sidious's power level, and it's a HopelessBossFight. By the time of the New Republic, Palpatine was essentially a PhysicalGod, having become an outright HumanoidAbomination at the level of [[VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords Darth Nihilus]] without any of the latter's drawbacks. He possessed the power to tear time and space itself apart, devoured entire planets to sustain himself, distorted reality with his very existence, and eventually could not even be contained by death conventionally. Here, he retains only a fraction of those same powers and is quite mortal, with his second death possibly being his last. [[PlayingWithATrope That said]], in the canon, Force powers in general have been dramatically scaled down to more closely match the prequels and original trilogies, and his creation of a massive lightning storm in ''The Rise of Skywalker'' is the most impressive feat of raw Force power seen in the canon, showing he is still far and away [[TheArchmage the strongest Dark Side wielder seen]].

Yes, the Clones were only designed to carry out Order 66 without question so he could get rid of the Jedi, but they proved tactically superior in virtually every way, thanks to their prowess in free-thinking and the leeway their Jedi Generals gave them to carry out their missions. But once they no longer had a purpose, Palpatine ditched them as soon as he could, [[spoiler:throwing them under the bus for blindly following Rampart's orders to destroy Kamino (their homeworld) and convincing the Senate to decommission them]]. The subsequent legion of Stormtroopers he brought in were unquestionably loyal, could be conscripted cheaply, and have twice as many recruited compared to the clones--except that loyalty made them creatively sterile, their armor was so cheaply made and they were so horribly trained that [[ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy they couldn't hit the broad side of the Death Star]], and their repeat failures made stomping out the Rebellion that much more difficult. And yet it never occurred to him just to keep the more efficient, more accurate, and more competently trained clones. But that Death Star money had to come from somewhere...

This means that if someone learns how to defend against it, it will backfire and reflect back to him with no way for him to defend against it due to it being hard to turn off. Mace Windu blocking it with his lightsaber at close quarters causes it to deflect back to him and seriously hurt disfigure him (or remove his human-looking disguise), Yoda using his Force Lightning abilities to absorb it causes Palpatine to be overpowered by until a Force explosion sends both of them flying, and Rey using two lightsabers to deflect it after he just absorbed Rey and Ben's Force dyad which made his Force Lightning much stronger causes it to return to him and fry him to death. Lastly, it leaves him very wide open for attack when he's shocking someone to death with it, as seen when Vader takes the opportunity to pick him up and throw him to his death because he was way too focused on electrocuting Luke to sense Vader's betrayal.

And yet, this is still nothing compared to all of the Jedi younglings who were hunted down and slaughtered en masse along with their masters during Order 66; not even children were exempt from the Jedi Purge, and Palpatine specifically instructed Vader to show no mercy when launching his attack on the Jedi Temple.

** Using the Trade Federation to attack his own planet, gaining sympathy and beginning his ascent to power is more or less this trope on a planetary scale.
** In "[[Recap/StarWarsTheCloneWarsS6E4Orders Orders]]", Fives decides to plead his case directly to Chancellor Palpatine, having uncovered a conspiracy involving inhibitor chips that had been implanted within the clone troopers. Since Fives has gotten too close to the truth for comfort, Palpatine secretly reveals his involvement to Fives, which leads to Fives taking a rifle from one of the guards and pointing it at Palpatine, and Shaak Ti runs into a scene where it looks like Fives had gone insane and attacked the Chancellor for no apparent reason. The result is that Fives is discredited as a violent madman and the truth ends up dying with him when Commander Fox shoots him dead in response to Fives reaching for one of Rex's pistols, allowing Order 66 to remain a secret until it's too late.

* In contrast to the original canon, where Palpatine ''only'' had contempt for Vader and tried to replace him every other day, canon has Palpatine claim Anakin/Vader is genuinely his friend and that he doesn't necessarily want to be forced to kill him for defiance.
* In ''Rise of Skywalker'', Palpatine does this to Kylo Ren by threatening to turn the Sith Fleet on him when Rey manages to still live, though considering his true plan for those two, reverse psychology may be the real reason.

* SuperSpeed: Palpatine augments his swordplay with the Force to both strike and move faster. Although this is not made as apparent in the films, this is widely explored in expanded media. Palpatine is described as being ''so fast'' in various novelizations that many see little more than the blur of his lightsaber. Only his apprentice in Maul and the greatest Jedi Masters in Yoda and Windu were ever able to keep up with Palpatine's pace.

* EmergencyAuthority: In ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'', Jar Jar Binks convinces the Senate to grant Palpatine emergency powers due to the looming threat of the Separatists, allowing him to remain in office past the expiration of his elected terms, as well as directly oversee the formation of the Grand Army of the Republic just in time for the Clone Wars to begin. The Emergency Powers Act was the first of several amendments made to the Galactic Constitution, which essentially gave Palpatine unchecked executive control over the Republic. To say that this would have dire consequences would be a ''massive'' understatement.
