* BadassLongRobe: He fully appreciates the dramatic flair it lends him. As a bonus, it also slightly buffs his ability to resist magic thrown at him if he sends some of his own magic into it, so it's practical too.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: In his community, dark magic is viewed as evil and corrupting, but he's a pretty decent guy all told.
* BlackMagic: It's implied that he's gotten addicted to using Dark magic, and that it has been gradually and subtly affecting his personality for the worse ever since he first got hit with a Corruption spell.
* BookDumb: Justified in that he's dyslexic in a way that renders him completely illiterate despite his best attempts to learn. Nevertheless, he makes up for his deficits with a sharp wit and keen observation, and he's learned how to cast from tomes and use magic directly from his body rather than relying on spell incantations.

* ConsummateLiar: He hates laying, but when he has to, he's good at it. Usually takes the form of twisting the truth or telling half-truths.
* DarkIsNotEvil: As a Shaman, he uses Dark magic, but he's actually a pretty pleasant guy if you can get past his mistrust and automatic attempts to drive people away.

* FunetikAksent: "Hon'stly, whaddaya 'spect from a pirate?"
* GlassCannon: He's fast and agile, his magic is powerful...and a good smack would knock him out.
* HurtingHero: Being accused of crimes he didn't commit led to his becoming a fugitive with a bounty on his head. Now anyone who becomes attached to him runs the risk of getting involved in the mess, forcing him to adapt a JerkassFacade to try to keep them at bay despite the loneliness it brings.
* KnightInSourArmor: Traumatic events have taught him life's anything but fair, and turned him cynical and bitter on top of it. Yet he still cares for the world and those in it and goes to great lengths to help people and right whatever wrongs he can, sometimes at tremendous risk to himself.
* LightIsNotGood: The priests and elders of his village, primarily users of Light magic, are only too willing to jump to harsh conclusions on very little evidence and the simple "fact" that if he uses Dark magic, he ''must'' be evil.

* MasterOfIllusion: Not to such a dramatic extent, but he would rather use illusions to trick his way out of a fight than actually participate in one.

* MistakenForMurderer: A string of [[{{GuiltByCoincidence}} coincidences]] and mistrust led to Marik being falsely accused of participating in mass murders while [[{{NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished}} trying to help a sick Manakete]]. To protect her, he refused to fully explain himself to the priests who arrested him, and was shipped off to [[{{TheAlcatraz}} the Isla del Fuego]] for his troubles (but managed to escape on the way there). He's now a wanted fugitive and would like nothing more than to be able to [[{{ClearMyName}} clear the accusations against him]] and return home.
* MysteriousPast: Only the ''Black Phoenix'' crew knows where he came from. They haven't told him, and Marik hasn't bothered to ask.
* {{Pirate}}: Type 2. The ''Black Phoenix'' only targets the occasional merchant who is already suitably well-off, and other pirates.
* RealMenWearPink: His favorite hobby is embroidering various designs of plants and animals on his clothes, and expect a scathing rebuttal about the benefits of being able to repair your own clothes if you try to insult him for it.
* ShoutOut: The ship ''Vastmark'', where he was imprisoned at the start of his roleplaying career, and its captain, Dhirken, are Shout Outs to TheWarsOfLightAndShadow.
* StoicWoobie: He'll show pleasant emotions, even if they're faked, but he does his best to hide his real suffering, and boy is there a lot of it. To his credit, he's pretty good at it.
* TalkLikeAPirate: Played with. He drops sounds off a lot of words and mashes some together (see FunetikAksent above), but he doesn't use "arr"s, "thar be"s or "matey"s and is surprisingly limited in his "ain't"s.
