Thanatos is the main antagonist of the story. He is the one behind the strange behavior of the people in Pandora, and eventually those in Northtown. He saps their life-energy, leaving them in a zombie-like state, to give himself strength.\\

* AmbiguousGender: Popoi's gender was left ambiguous in the Japanese version. The English version made Popoi male, while the German version went for female. The English translation of the remake then chose to use the gender-neutral 'they', albeit other western translations, such as Spanish, went with 'he' instead, due to [[ValuesDissonance language restrictions]] regarding gender. Popoi is generally voiced by women, with the Japanese voice using 'oira' to refer to themselves, which is generally a male pronoun to use, but [[{{Bokukko}} can be used by girls]].

* RiddleForTheAges: Is he originally the [[VideoGame/TrialsOfMana Masked Mage]] [[VideoGame/HeroesOfMana Belgar]], [[VideoGame/DawnOfMana Granz]] or someone else entirely?

* DarkChick: For TheEmpire, as their female general.

* ScaledUp: For her OneWingedAngel transformation, Fanha becomes a [[MultiArmedAndDangerous four-armed]] [[SnakePeople Naga]].

* GenderNeutralWriting: In the remake, Popoi is referred to with the gender-neutral "they".

He was in Potos Village when the Mantis Ant awoke and played an indirect role of helping Randi win. He explains to Randi that the sword he took was the legendary Mana Sword and points him in the first direction of where to go from there.\\

Popoi learns that they came from the Upper Lands and lived in the Sprite Village. Upon heading there, it turns out that the village was ravaged by the Empire and most of the sprites are implied to have died, except for Popoi and her Gramps, who was safe in the Wind Palace at the time. When they learn that the sprites will cease to exist if Mana were to disappear from the world, Popoi sticks with Randi to prevent this from happening.

A knight of the Pandoran army and the lover of Primm. He was sent on a risky mission by the king of Pandora to Elinee's Castle, where he was enslaved by the sorcerer Thanatos.

* BadassInDistress: He never shows his badass credentials, but he is a captain in the royal army so he is a given. Too bad for him the local WickedWitch was too much to handle.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Thanatos uses him to do his dirty work.
* DistressedDude: He spends most of the game captive to Thanatos.
* HeroicSuicide: [[spoiler:Kills himself to prevent Thanatos from stealing his body.]]
* IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:Dyluck's final words to Randi are to ask him to take care of Primm.]]
* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler:Thanatos reveals that he was born with enormous dark powers suppressed at birth and raised following justice. Such combination of darkness and light makes him the perfect vessel for Thanatos.]]

A knight of Tasnica and the one to recognize Randi as the new Mana Knight. He shows up several times to help the party throughout their adventure.

* BadassCape: Is notably the only heroic character to wear one.
* BadassInDistress: Becomes one of Thanatos' zombie slaves in Pandora's ruin. Fortunately the heroes break his curse.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Jema is the only person who accepts Randi as the hero without a hint of reservation. Luckily, he still has swing with the various sages and regents you encounter. If Jema says this kid is alright, then everyone else will fall in line.
* CoolOldGuy: Helps out the heroes several times throughout their adventure.
* MrExposition: He's the one who gives the party pointers for where to go next.
* MythologyGag: Is a reference to the Gemma Knights from the [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyAdventure first game]]. The remake even changes his name to "Gemma".
* OldMaster: Very old, and still fighting in the front line. This is never said but while Randi and his friends handle the monsters, he and the Tasnican army handle the regular troops of TheEmpire.

* EleventhHourSuperpower: In the final battle, Dryad's final spell is unlocked. This spell turns the Mana Sword into its true form, and as one might expect, it's the most effective weapon against the Mana Beast. Depending on the version, Randi wielding the Mana Sword's true form might be the ''only'' thing that hurts the Mana Beast.

* LivingMcGuffin: [[spoiler:Thanatos reveals that he was born with enormous dark powers suppressed at birth and raised following justice. Such combination of darkness and light makes him the perfect vessel for Thanatos.]]

* ShouldersOfDoom: His huge shoulder pads. Played UpToEleven in the remake.

* {{Qipao}}: The Kung Fu Dress armor, which only Primm can wear, evokes this trope. However it's only evident on the inventory sprite.

* RapunzelHair: Kept up in a noble ponytail, but it reaches down to her knees.

* RapunzelHair: Popoi's hair reaches almost to the ground because of their short height.

* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Notably looks very much like a larger version of the party's dragon, Flammie. The resemblance is downplayed in the remake.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Their hair is depicted with a slightly more pinkish hue in some art. Justified, as they are not human, but a sprite.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: A light shade of purple.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Green hair in his case.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: His hair actually is blue. Well, bluish purple.

* ActionGirl: In spades. Her default weapon are knuckles and her entire reason for leaving home was to go rescue her boyfriend, who is a soldier of Pandora, from a dangerous witch.

He's one of the four generals of TheEmpire, though he has no real loyalty to it. Once the Mana Fortress has resurfaced, Thanatos kills Emperor Vandole and becomes the main threat, before the Mana Beast gets resurrected. Thanatos' main goal is to obtain a new, all-powerful body for himself to possess, and his eyes are set on [[BadassInDistress Dyluck]].

* ClimaxBoss: Despite being the BigBad, he is only the second-to-last boss due to his actions [[GaiasVengeance awakening the Mana Beast.]] The battle against him settles the conflict but the world remains in peril until the Final Boss is slain.
* ContinuityNod: Being a powerful EvilSorcerer in service of an more martial oriented EvilOverlord [[spoiler: Who ends up betraying his boss and becoming the major threat]] recalls Julius from the first game of the series.
* CoolMask: Wears a horned one that hides his face.

* DemonOfHumanOrigin: Once a "regular" EvilSorcerer whose soul became immortal through a DealWithTheDevil, now an ethereal, undead demon of Dark Magic powerful enough to command all demons.
