* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Despite smoking pot and appearing a bit goofy, Dr. Bamford is surprisingly a very competent doctor and a very perceptive and rather wise character.

* AcceptableEthnicTargets: The other characters occasionally tease Matthew about being Scottish but it is always in good humour.

* BabiesEverAfter: Nicky learns she is pregnant but before she can tell Matthew the good news she has an argument with him because she disapproves of Grace and him growing pot, after avoiding Matthew and not speaking for a while they reconcile and at the end of the film Nicky and Matthew are happily expecting their first baby.

* HigherUnderstandingThroughDrugs: Draw...spliff...puff...shit... Call it what you will, but it’s my belief it is the door to enlightenment.” - Vince

* GoodAllAlong: At first Jacques appears to be dangerous, however during the negotiations with Grace he then shows he is a decent guy (as well as having romantic feelings towards Grace), however he then secretly sends his bodyguard China to take Vince and follow her back to Cornwall, when he shows up at her home she angrily confronts him he explains that the reason he sent them was for her safety, Grace ends up happily remarrying to Jacques.

Grace is an English small-town Widow and adept gardener who soon discovers that her coastal manor home is in danger of being repossessed because her Late (unfaithful) husband left her in enormous debt. She then has to come up with a way to pay off the debt and her solution may come in the form of some of her gardener’s cannabis plants and her own green thumbs.

Jacques Chevalier is a seemingly dangerous french “Businessman” who Grace is introduced to in London through Vince hoping sell the Marijuana and becomes romantically interested in her.

* HypocriticalHeartwarming: Nicky decides to start avoiding and stop speaking to Matthew (rather than break up with him) because she disapproves of his and Grace’s plan to grow marijuana, but she also tells Grace not to let Matthew get arrested as she doesn’t what that to happen.

* TheStoner: Matthew does smoke and grow pot but is also among the most levelheaded characters in the movie. He was described by Craig Ferguson who said “I saw him as a decent chap who happens to like a bit of marijuana”.

* MorePopularSpinOff: The character of Doctor Bamford was spun off into the greatly altered character of Doctor ‘Doc’ Martin Ellingham (both were played by Martin Clunes).

* CaringGardener: Grace is a highly Skilled Gardener and after helping Matthew get some more light for some of his (Marijuana) plants they get the idea that could solve their money problems.

Dr. Bamford is the village’s witty pot-smoking doctor who is good friends with Matthew.
