Mako is the sole eleventh-grader in Team Kiyosumi, as well as Hisa's best friend and confidante. Her peculiar manner of speech appears to be a result of being raised by her grandfather -- she uses the [[JapanesePronouns pronoun]] "washi", which is usually used only by old men. Her family owns a mahjong parlor (maid cafe in the anime).

* JapanesePronouns: Mako uses the pronoun "washi", which is normally the domain of older men. She was raised by her grandfather, so she apparently picked up his speech habits; in a flashback in Chapter 117, another member of Mako's family tells her that even if she likes her grandfather, she shouldn't mimic his speech patterns.

* AwesomeButImpractical: Saki's consecutive Rinshan Kaihou can net big points and usually is a death sentence for any player unlucky enough to be on the opposite end. However, it needs specific conditions to set up, something that Saki has to prepare beforehand [[XanatosGambit by clever manipulation of the other players' points/tiles/discards.]]

* [[DoesNotLikeShoes Does Not Like Footwear]]: Saki later discovers that she prefers to play Mahjong while barefoot, because it gives her a feeling of homelike comfort that [[TheGlovesComeOff allows her to buckle down and compete at her best.]] This is because she first played the game in her bare feet when she was really little and at home, and made the connection after remembering she was shoe-less and sometimes even sock-less at training camp. She also likes to clap her bare feet together for good luck, imitating her younger self.

* TheAce: What people think she is to Kiyosumi, in actuality, she's more of TheLancer to Saki, Kiyosumi's true ace.

* OvershadowedByAwesome: Played with. The media is all over her and bills her as a mahjong genius (though this is not without merit, being last year's individual mahjong inter middle champion) in a supposedly unknown team, thus her hype overshadows the rest of Kiyosumi's players especially Saki. However, some players tend to underestimate her due to her apparent lack of superpowers and the fact that she's being hyped up by the media makes her actual skills questionable, but they still do not take her lightly. Finally, the most insightful players in the nationals virtually ignore her because they are more interested in Saki simply because it was Saki, not her, who defeated Koromo who was last year's tournament MVP.
