!![[VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc Makoto Naegi]]
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/MakotoNaegi_2472.jpg]]

The main character. Makoto hails from an alternate continuity where the Tragedy hasn't happened. But he's also stuck with a rather large bout of bad luck. When incidents occur that let him learn the truth about the multiverse and his place in it, Makoto must take it upon himself and save all of existence from devastation.

Stat-wise, Makoto has the highest Luck stat growth of the cast, making him suited for debuffs and status effects. Aiding him is the fact that as a result of the ritual that got him dragged in, Makoto now has the power to summon beings to aid him in combat.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Apparently, this Makoto [[spoiler:once considered committing suicide at some point.]]
* AdaptationalBadass: Played with. Makoto gradually learns how to defend himself and master the Realmwalkers' Rune Crystals. He eventually defeats several bad guys and pulls out some miracles. [[spoiler:After becoming a Realmwalker]], Makoto has become more confident in his self.
* CatchPhrase: It wouldn't be Makoto if he didn't say "You've got that wrong!" at least once.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: To Kyuu from ''VideoGame/RakenzarnTales''. While Kyuu is meant to gradually become the strongest party member, Makoto remains about the same level of strength compared to his teammates.
* TheGenericGuy: Middle of the road average all around. However, an examination of his character in chapter 4 deconstructs this, taking a look at how being considered nothing but average is rather mentally taxing.
* IKnowMortalKombat: His experience at playing light gun games at the arcade is used to explain how he's decent enough not to shoot himself when Lion gives him a gun to defend himself with at the start of the game.
* TheJinx: Yeah, that "Ultimate Lucky Student" thing didn't last very long for him.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Some of Makoto's victory quotes skirt a fine line between openly acknowledging his video game status.
-->"Another level up! The key to every RPG! Well, most of them."
-->"All right, I leveled up! So, do I have to spend Skill Points or what?"
* NonstandardSkillLearning: Makoto gains new summons over the course of the game.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Makoto is usually very kind and forgiving, much like his prime counterpart. You know something is up when he starts to get angry, [[spoiler:toward Solo when he had Kyoko hostage and tortured. When Solo accuses Makoto for letting his friends from his world get involved, Makoto retaliates that Solo is responsible for the entire mess. [[NeverMyFault Solo begs to differ and proceeds to taunt Makoto back]].]]
* SharingABody: The summons Makoto acquires apparently hang out inside him.
* ShipTease: Despite not being your classic ChickMagnet, Makoto actually doesn't do half bad as he has attracted a few girls.
** Much like their original counterparts, Makoto and Sayaka have a decent amount of teases, especially in the beginning.
** At first, Kyoko doesn't seem to care much for Makoto until much later on.
** Makoto is close friends with [[GenkiGirl Aoi]] [[SpiritedCompetitor Asa]][[SweetTooth hina]], but their interaction is very close to full-on ShipTease.
** Despite not being a romance option, Rhajat is taking more interest in Makoto. [[spoiler:when Airi [[KissOfDeath kisses]] Makoto to feed off from his LifeEnergy in a state of emergency, Rhajat seems a lot angrier than usual. When Lion thinks she's jealous, she promptly shuts him up. It happens again in another quest.]]
** Even a couple of his Summons are interested in him, notably Sugar and Airi. Too bad the latter is a wraith who needs [[LifeEnergy to feed on life force]]... through the KissOfDeath.
* SummonMagic: Makoto gained this ability as a result of his being summoned.
* SupportPartyMember: Not required to be, but it's recommended for him due to his exclusive class choices and stat increases.
* UniqueProtagonistAsset: The aforementioned summoning ability.
* UnluckilyLucky: No matter how crappy a situation, he just keeps coming out okay.

!![[Franchise/WhenTheyCry Lion Ushiromiya]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/200px-Rio_a11_def1_5421.png]]

In the Umineko timeline Lion comes from, he didn't become Sayo Yasuda, so Beatrice the Golden Witch doesn't exist and the Rokkenjima massacre didn't happen. He's also been kicking it with the Realmwalkers for a while now and knows a few tricks of the trade.

Lion is a JackOfAllStats, able to use any class well, but lacking a standout stat to power certain moves.

* AllLovingHero: He's all about treating others with equality and respect.
* CatchPhrase: He tends to say "Right you are" when agreeing with someone.
* DeadpanSnarker: He can get a little biting at times, usually by snarking back at someone.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's got a blonde head of hair and is very nice.
* HeroesPreferSwords: His exclusive classes have a heavy focus on sword-based moves.
* LastNameBasis: With Makoto, but mostly because he thinks Naegi is a more interesting name.
* NiceGuy: Much like his prime counterpart, Lion is very polite.
* WontTakeYesForAnAnswer: His reaction when Ascheritt agrees to let Makoto help with the rescue mission.

!![[VideoGame/FireEmblemFates Rhajat]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/feif_icon_69.png]]

Rhajat comes from a world based closely off the Revelation path of ''Fates''. She was hanging out in the Deeprealm and never got recruited into the campaign until Makoto and Lion ran into her. After seeing Makoto's powers, she decides to join the party to learn more about them.

Rhajat is the group's BlackMage. As a result, any class on her will get big buffs to magic stats, but dinky ones to health and physical stats.

* AscendedExtra: A minor optional character in ''Fates'', one of the main party members here.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Creepy and kinda weird, but not evil.
* GlassCannon[=/=]SquishyWizard: She's a BlackMagicianGirl who dishes a lot of damages with her spells, but her defenses are weak and her HP is low.
* LonersAreFreaks: Three to four years living by herself hasn't exactly done well for her mental health.
* SolitarySorceress: Invoked; her dad dropped her off there to keep her safe.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: In this continuity, Rhajat becomes obsessed with Naegi after seeing his SummonMagic in action. She decides to watch him like a hawk with a mouse and follows him around during his adventure in Hoshido. However, she seems more interested in his magical abilities (and in acquiring the same kind of SummonMagic for herself) than romantically interested.
* StalkingIsFunnyIfItIsFemaleAfterMale: Her actions are treated more with silliness than seriousness.

!![[VideoGame/ArcanaHeart Mei-Fang]]
[[quoteright:120:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arcana_heart_mei-fang_3647.png]]

Mei-Fang comes from a universe whose Beholder died, causing her to wind up in Lion's home universe. After accidentally getting involved in a rescue operation, she wound up in the care of the Realmwalkers and is searching for her creator.

She is a GlassCannon with weak magic due to her Arcana being busted.

* EmotionlessGirl: Par for the course with robots.
* RobotGirl: With all the usual tropes.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Yup, still as blue as in the source material.

!!Raiga Akamura

A fellow hailing from a radically different version of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV''.

* CasanovaWannabe: He'll flirt with any girl that perks his interests. Not much success, though.

!!Mika Fauziah

A hyper girl hailing from a world of ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}''.

* TheBeastmaster: She fights with Digimon.
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: She's the only character who doesn't have an exclusive Rune Class.

!![[Anime/TigerMaskW Tiger the Dark]]

Tiger serves as the MightyGlacier of the party.

!![[VideoGame/{{Valis}} Yuko Ahso]]

Yuko functions as the MagicKnight.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Her backstory is said to be more tragic than the game canon.
* ChainmailBikini[=/=]MinidressOfPower: Her usual attire.
* RapunzelHair: All the way down to her stomach.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Long and blue.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Realmwalkers]]

The [[GuardianOfTheMultiverse Guardians of the Multiverse]]. An interdimensional force that works to maintain the integrity of the entire multiverse and protect them from outside forces.

!![[Manga/UbelBlatt Ascheritt]]
TheHero of his universe. Unlike his primary counterpart, he does not use his false name, Köinzell.
* TheAce: One of the veteran Realmwalkers and highly respected by his peers. His level is a whooping 75 when he joins as a GuestStarPartyMember.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He's pretty chill and forgiving when Makoto keeps getting involved in Realmwalker business.

!![[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario]]

The mascot of Nintendo. In this game, there are two of him running around: one based on the games and the other from ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''.

* HeroicMime: Played with. One version talks like in the ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigi'' series, where he only communicates in Italian-sounding gibberish that everyone else translates back for the player. Averted with his cartoon counterpart, who speaks like the other characters.
* InASingleBound: ''Duh'', it's '''Mario'''. His unique class is even called "[[VideoGame/DonkeyKong Jumpman]]".
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with there being two Marios. It makes Makoto confused at first.

!![[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Luigi]]

* WhateverHappenedToTheMouse: After playing a minor role in the opening of the game, Luigi doesn't even reappear as an NPC.

!!WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck

* ThoseTwoGuys: with Daffy. They are always paired together after the prologue.

!!WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck

* ThoseTwoGuys: with Donald. They are always paired together after the prologue.

!![[VideoGame/TeamFortress2 Medic]]

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: If you've never heard of Medic before, the opening scene of him competently treating Makoto's wounds while telling the story of how he lost his medical license pretty much sets the scene.

!!Emiline Brooks

* BrutalHonesty: The lady ain't holding nothing back when it comes to her opinions.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Her ability to pick Realmwalker recruits is somewhat lacking, given the last two completely bombed the exams.
* {{Jerkass}}: Her bluntness makes her somewhat unpopular.

!![[WesternAnimation/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil Hekapoo]]

!!Willard

!![[Franchise/StreetFighter Chun-li]]

!![[https://k-a-r-y-u.deviantart.com/ Cynthia Takenaka]]

* {{Ninja}}: Her occupation and class.

!![[WesternAnimation/TheLordOfTheRings Gandalf]]

* RobeAndWizardHat: Part and parcel for his "Gandalf the White" look.

!![[Franchise/ResidentEvil Chris Redfield]]

!![[VideoGame/{{Elsword}} Rena]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Overseers]]
The big kahunas of the Realmwalkers, who run the whole place and hand out assignments.

!![[VideoGame/SuikodenV Zerase]]
A mysterious woman from the [[VideoGame/{{Suikoden}} Suikoden]] universe who watches over the Realmwalkers.
* TheArchmage: Much like her original counterpart, she's one of the best magic users in her universe. If not, she may be the most powerful of her counterparts that she becomes an Overseer.
* BigGood: Seems to be shaped into this.
* GoodIsNotNice: She's very rough toward Makoto, but means well.

!![[VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising Paultena]]

* RapunzelHair: Down to her hips.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Bright green, actually.

!![[Franchise/SpiderMan Madam Webb]]

* BlindSeer: Still blind, still just as competent as her regular version.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Summons]]
Entities or Summon beings that Makoto can form contracts in exchange of inhabiting his body.

!![[VideoGame/SummonNightSwordcraftStory EX-e-LD]]
* Mecha
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: You can't have him and Lemon Magician Girl both as summons.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue Oni to Ifrit's Red Oni (should EX-e-LD chosen as the first Summon)
* ShipperOnDeck: He seems to think Kyoko is best suited for Makoto.

!![[TabletopGame/YuGiOh Lemon Magician Girl]]
* ButtMonkey: Frequently gets her butt kicked by Ifrit every time she does or say something idiotic.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: You can't have her and Ex-e-LD both as summons.
* ShipperOnDeck: Seems to shaping into this. After seeing Makoto interacting with Asahina, she thinks Asahina is Makoto's girlfriend.

!![[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX Ifrit]]
* BigRedDevil
* PlayingWithFire: His signature element.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red Oni to EX-e-LD's Blue Oni (should EX-e-LD chosen as the first Summon)

!![[Anime/QueensBlade Airi]]
* AdaptationalHeroism: She was much more evil in the gamebook. Much like her anime counterpart, she is kinder and loyal.
* BadassAdorable: She is one of the stronger Summons, but gets easily flustered when someone flirts her. Case in point, [[CasanovaWannabe Raiga]].
* KissOfDeath: Her method of feeding on LifeEnergy. [[spoiler:She does this to Makoto when she needs energy the most. This near death experience traumatizes him.]]
* SinisterScythe: Her signature weapon.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Supporting Characters]]

!!Makoto's Classmates
->See also Characters/DanganRonpaMaleStudents and Characters/DanganRonpaFemaleStudents

* AdaptationalHeroism: The class is generally quite a bit nicer since there's no killing game going on. Of course, Byakuya's still a jerk and if Toko still has Genocide Jack in her head is up in the air.
** The prime example of this trope is [[spoiler: Junko Enoshima, the BigBad of ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'']]. Unlike [[spoiler: her]] prime counterpart, [[spoiler: she]] is friendlier [[spoiler:(having a somewhat stable relationship with her sister)]] and lacks any despair-induced insanity.
* TheGhost: Hifumi gets a mention, but doesn't show up. Mondo and Kiyotaka have a brief cameo in an opening shot, but likewise go unseen, while Leon is only talked to briefly.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: Both Celeste and Aoi can be dated.

!!!Kyoko Kirigiri
* BornDetective: comes from the family.
* BrutalHonesty
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler: she actually does a lot better mastering some of the Rune Classes, more so than Makoto.]]

!!!Sayaka Maizono

!!!Aoi Asahina

!![[Franchise/WhenTheyCry Bernkastel]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Primal Union]]

The LegionOfDoom that serves as the primary antagonist. Their goal is to bring order to the multiverse.

* ResignationsNotAccepted: Try to quit and they'll hunt you down across every world to see you dead.

!!The Unknown

The one who hired Solo and the leader of the Primal Union, having Beholders killed off for reasons unknown.

* AmbiguousGender: Nobody seems to know the man's true gender, at least so far.
* BigBad: The guy behind everything.
* InTheHood: A villainous example, concealing their looks.

!!Serpent Knight

* TheRival: He's this to Makoto.

!![[VideoGame/CastlevaniaRondoOfBlood Shaft]]

A dark necromancer who's summoning and brainwashing monsters to serve his client.

* BaldofEvil: Hard to notice since his head his always covered.
* TheDragon: To Dracula in his home series/universe.
* EvilSorcerer: His primary occupation according to his source material.

!![[VideoGame/{{Strider}} Solo]]

One of the most feared bounty hunters in the multiverse, Solo has been hired by an unknown employer to knock off Beholders and destroy their worlds.

* BountyHunter: Counts as one and also as a ProfessionalKiller.
* KnightOfCerebus: When he's around, things get real serious real fast.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: His first few attempts to kill Makoto were in this manner. He gets more direct when those failed.
* PlasmaCannon: One of his primary weapons, which also acts as a BFG in his LimitBreak
* SoreLoser: He doesn't take it well [[spoiler: when Makoto Naegi manages to best him in combat. Granted, Makoto had help from Lion, Rhajat, and Mei-Fang, but Solo refuses to accept this loss.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Solo suffers from this after losing in his boss fight. He is completely dumbfounded that Makoto Naegi, not only has evaded his assassination attempts for long, but also best him.]]
--> '''Solo''': [[spoiler: How could you, four mindless brats, defeat us?!! Especially YOU!]]
--> [[spoiler: '''Makoto''': ...]]
--> '''Solo''': [[spoiler: How could you survive this long and eventually defeated me?! [...] You're just a pawn who should've died days ago!]]

!![[VideoGame/{{ParasiteEve}} No. 9 GOLEM]]

An alternate version of No. 9 from an unknown universe. No. 9 has been hired by an unknown employer and is partnered with Solo.

* AxCrazy: Even more so than Hans that Solo doesn't fully trust him.
* FlamingSword: A CallBack to his home series.
* LaughablyEvil: Has shades of this, more so than his original counterpart.
* LaughingMad: Prone into a fit of laughter.
* OhCrap: No. 9 gets this expression if you take out Solo first during their boss fight. Double as a [[SugarWiki/MomentofAwesome Crowning Moment of Awesome]] and funny.
--> '''No. 9''': [[ThisIsGonnaSuck This isn't gonna end well, is it?]]
* PlayingWithFire: Thanks to the Pyromancer sub-class.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: He may have his humorous moments, but he will remind you that he's not someone to take lightly. He slaughtered three deserters, [[spoiler: injects Samuel with a mutation that turns him into a monster]], and strong enough to give the party some trouble.
* VaderBreath: He breathes like this.
* YouAreNumber6

!![[VideoGame/RakenzarnTales Samuel]]

* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:While his ''Tales'' counterpart lives to antagonize the party another day, this one croaks shortly after meeting the party.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Realizing the full scope of the Primal Union's plans and actually seeing a world die before his eyes make him and his men make a break for it.
* TransformationHorror: [[spoiler:His ultimate fate. Number 9 injected a deadly mutation into him. His painful groan indicates the transformation is extremely unpleasant...]] [[spoiler:Fortunately, he had a MercyKill by Makoto Naegi, albeit from self-defense when he tried to attack him]].

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:He gets himself killed by his own Summon.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: He was saved from his death at the Bottomless Canyon by Shaft. [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope Then he got bumped off in a different way]].]]
* StarterVillain: He's mostly there to give the player a first serious challenge of a boss fight.

* ChainmailBikini[=/=]MinidressOfPower: Her usual attire.
* RapunzelHair: All the way down to her stomach.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Long and blue.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Bright green, actually.

!![[Franchise/SpiderMan Madam Webb]]

* BlindSeer: Still blind, still just as competent as her regular version.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Summons]]
Entities or Summon beings that Makoto can form contracts in exchange of inhabiting his body.

!![[VideoGame/SummonNightSwordcraftStory EX-e-LD]]
* Mecha

* BigRedDevil
* PlayingWithFire: His signature element.

* SinisterScythe: Her signature weapon.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Supporting
[[Characters/RakenzarnFrontierStoryOtherCharacters Other Characters]]

!!Makoto's Classmates
->See also Characters/DanganRonpaMaleStudents and Characters/DanganRonpaFemaleStudents

* BrutalHonesty
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler: she actually does a lot better mastering some of the Rune Classes, more so than Makoto.]]

!!!Sayaka Maizono

!!!Aoi Asahina

!![[Franchise/WhenTheyCry Bernkastel]]

--> [[spoiler: '''Makoto''': ...]]

* YouAreNumber6

!![[VideoGame/FireEmblemFates Hans]]

* AxCrazy: He loves his killing. And he uses an actual ax to boot.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: More so than his original counterpart. [[spoiler:He fails to summon Ifrit properly. Naegi's reaction and the way he describes his death is unpleasant, to say the least.]]
* TooDumbToLive: Sure, keep ordering a [[spoiler: giant red devil that went berserk with mental anguish. Nothing's wrong with that.]]
