* AdaptationalNiceGuy:
** The Solan of the books was a much bigger JerkAss and SmallNameBigEgo who not only drank, smoked, swore and lied like there was no tomorrow, but who was always trying to cheat and take advantage of other people, even skipping out on restaurant bills without so much as a second thought. In the movie, Solan has been softened up considerably and is mostly just a cheeky, loveable rascal with a genuinely heroic attitude.
** In the follow-up movies, for those who only knew him from Pinchcliffe Grand Prix, he can come across as an AdaptationalJerkass, but it's really more an example of CharacterRerailment, as he regains far more of the vices he had in the books -- most notably his SmallNameBigEgo attitude. He's still very much an AdaptationalNiceGuy compared to the books though, as his heroic, altruistic side is far more prominent even here.

Added DiffLines:

* BreakoutCharacter: Ludvig's character was specifically created for the movie (he had appeared on a single illustration before, but didn't have a name or a personality), but quickly emerged as its star and became Aukrust's most beloved and popular character. Following the movies he became the most prominent character in Aukrust's books, eclipsing even previous main character Solan.

!The main trio

* GadgeteerGenius: A bicycle repairman by trade, but also a genius inventor who invents everything from automatic lumbering machines to Cool Cars with built-in gadgets of their own.

to:

* BadassDriver: For being a bicycle repairman who invents gadgets on the side, he's a surprisingly good driver who partakes in a racing competition against the world's finest.
* GadgeteerGenius: A bicycle repairman by trade, but also a genius an inventor who invents builds everything from automatic lumbering machines to Cool Cars with built-in gadgets of their own.

* CartoonCreature: There's a bit of confusion in the movie as to what sort of animal Ludvig really is; the narrator doesn't seem to be sure and Solan refers to him as a mole. After the movie, in subsequent books, Ludwig is firmly established as a hedgehog.

* TheEeyore: Ludvig has traces of this, though he completely lacks the trademark gloom and depression of the traditional Eeyore. He is definitely low-key and pessimistic, though, usually as a result of his generally timid nature.

* TheNightOwl:
* ShrinkingViolet: He is very shy around strangers and barely audible through his low, soft-spoken voice.

to:

* TheNightOwl:
TheNightOwl: Always the last one of the trio to rise up from bed.
* OnlyOneName: Unlike every other named character in this universe, Ludvig doesn't have a surname.
* ShrinkingViolet: He is very shy around strangers and barely audible through his low, soft-spoken gruff voice.

-->"[Reodor Felgen's] an independent sort of fellow, more of an inventor, you might say, than a businessman. He's made his name with a number of ingenious designs, such as the pedal-activated combined shaving-and-raspberry-picking machine, or the camshaft-operated turbo propeller. He uses a copying pencil, into some coffee powder, and his own patent telescopic ruler."

* Determinator: Solan doesn't take his lack of funding sitting down, jumping at the chance to send Reodor's blueprints to an oil sheikh who just so happens to be on vacation in their town. When his plan is shafted by a gorilla throwing him out of the sheikh's tent, he moves on to submitting the blueprints to a local news station.
* EasilyForgiven: Solan is let off easy by Reodor and Ludvig for attracting attention from the media without their consent. In Solan's defense, it was a kick in the rear that eventually led to them winning first place in the Grand Prix.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's got a bit of an abrasive personality and attracts the media's attention without his friends' consent, but he's an optimist who jumps through some hurdles to make Reodor's Il Tempo Gigante and chance to win the Grand Prix a reality.
* ThePollyanna: In the narrator's own words: "he's a born optimist." Whatever sadness may occur the one day, Solan greets the next morning as if it was the best day of his life.
