* AllAmericanFace: He's basically a ranger equivalent to characters like Superman and Captain America. He plays this trope straight forward in the episode "Food Fight", wearing American flag themed clothing.
* BadassArmfold: Yes, somehow he finds a way to fold those muscular arms.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Billy, to a certain extent. He starts teaching Billy more martial arts so he can defend himself better without morphing. This is ironic considering Austin St. John and David Yost were the youngest and oldest of the original main cast respectively.
* BlingOfWar: Used Tommy's gold shield on occasion. Get's even more bling in Zeo.
* BoisterousBruiser: Especially when morphed, he gets particularly loud and "in your face" when taunting and gloating at monsters, especially Goldar.

There were a few moments where Jason was able to fight Goldar more evenly and get in some decent hits but those battles were always interrupted somehow and ended inconclusively. In the second season, however, Jason [[TookALevelInBadass showed Goldar exactly what he was made of]] when Goldar kidnapped his friends and began draining their powers in "Missing Green." Not only did Jason defeat his longtime rival in combat to save his friends, he humiliated Goldar and kicked the winged warrior to the curb after Goldar made one final attempt to stop him from escaping. Though Austin St John would leave the show not too long after this episode, his victory over his archenemy served as a nice bookend to his feud with Goldar.

* MrFanservice: Frequently wears shirts that show off his arms or pectorals, such as tank tops, sleeveless shirts or low-cut V-necks, even the occasional ShirtlessScene.
* MyGreatestFailure: Jason blamed himself for not getting the Green Candle in the first place when he had the chance, even though Tommy in that episode explicitly did all he could to talk Jason out of going back to get it. He had no choice, as Zack had to remind him that Tommy's life was more important than his powers. In the second season, after Tommy's Green Ranger powers finally run out completely, he writes a letter to Jason telling him not to blame himself for what happened.
* NiceGuy: He's one of the friendliest people you would ever meet.
* NoIndoorVoice: After morphing.
* OddNameOut: The only original ranger who's name doesn't end with a "ee" sound, probably just a coincidence or it could be to symbolize his status as leader. Zack rarely being called by his full name (Zachary), Kimberly sometimes being called Kim, Trini having a rather [[AerithAndBob unique name]] and Tommy not coming in until later made this trope almost unnoticeable. [[note]] Jason's surname "Lee" does literally contain the "ee" sound. [[/note]]

* TallDarkAndHandsome: He is tall, has dark hair, and is considered attractive by girls.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In many of his later appearances, Jason seems to have let his status as the original Red Ranger go to his head, and becomes more arrogant and dismissive of later Rangers. This is most apparent in "Forever Red", where [[Series/PowerRangersWildForce Cole]], star-struck upon meeting him for the first time, tries to shake Jason's hand. Jason, amused by this, just pats Cole on the arm. This was intentional on the part of Austin St. John, as the character had very little to work with in his first couple of seasons other than being a StandardizedLeader.
* WorldsBestWarrior: Considering that the Power Rangers are the strongest in the world, then the strongest ranger is the strongest in the world. Whenever he had to fight Goldar unmorphed he proved this. He was also treated as an equal to the resident badass Tommy. The season one episode "Mighty Morphin Mutants" somewhat confirmed he was a stronger warrior than Tommy, since there was no Putty worthy of becoming the Red Mutant Ranger while the other rangers, including Tommy, got mutant counterparts. It also doesn't hurt that in the original Zyuranger red ranger vs green ranger fight (which was edited out in MMPR), the red ranger DID actually defeat the green ranger and cut him down at the end of the battle.

* BigEater: Not as much as the second Red Ranger but he has quite the appetite; known for devouring huge bowls of ice cream.
* BlackBestFriend: His first scene is sparring with Jason and when the putties show up, they immediately form BackToBackBadasses. In fact this is the true reason why the black guy was put in the black suit. The producers wanted to deliberately invoke this trope with Zack to Jason, and since Zyuranger footage had the Black Zyuranger as the Red Zyuranger's best friend, it showed in footage.
* BlingOfWar: He wore Tommy's dragon shield once in the first season finale "Oyster Stew" where his romance with Angela also concluded.
* BoisterousBruiser: Well, boisterous ''dancing'' bruiser. He'll deliver a smooth line and do a smooth move before taking out his opponent. It's cocky, flashy and a little unnecessary but still pretty cool.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "The hand is quicker than the eye."
* CasanovaWannabe: His interactions with Angela had shades of this.
* DanceBattler: The most iconic aspect of his character, incorporating dance moves into his fighting and even coming up with his own dance fighting style, "Hip Hop Kido". In earlier episodes, hip hop dance music even played in the background during his fight scenes.
* {{Determinator}}: Most prominent is his solo battle with the Knight Monster. Though not as much as Jason, he does have the tendency to brashly go after monsters (Primator, Stag Beetle) even if it sends him over a cliff.
* DoggedNiceGuy: With Angela; a minor running gag is her shooting him down.
* FunPersonified: By far the most fun loving and spontaneous of all the rangers. He cracks jokes, pulls pranks, does magic tricks and finds an excuse to dance at almost every turn, even in stilts.
* TheLancer: Best friends with TheLeader and {{foil}}s him with his more playful demeanor.
* NumberTwo: When Jason went missing (captured) during the Evil Green Ranger Saga, Zack stepped up as TheLeader. He was the one saying 'This is ThePlan' and doing the Morphing Call.
* ThePrankster: "The hand is quicker than the eye." It aids in pulling a fast one on people, like Bulk and Skull.
* PutOnABus: Left Angel Grove with Jason and Trini to attend the International Peace Conference in Switzerland in "The Power Transfer".

* SoulBrotha: A relatively mild example but he is a pretty good, albeit slightly stereotypical, representation of young black culture and whatever was cool and hip in general during the 90's. And yes, he would occasionally utter words such as "jammin", "groove" and "phat".
* TheMasqueradeWillKillYourDatingLife: Poor Zack out of all the Rangers tended to have the misfortune of the whole SecretIdentity thing getting in the way of trying to date his girlfriend.

* DramaQueen: She's very dramatic and emotional compared to the other rangers, especially in the movie. Possibly because the writers knew Amy Jo was the strongest actor in the cast. Fits this trope literally when she was in the school play and whenever she has to act her way out of a situation.
* {{Fainting}}: In addition to being overemotional, she had a habit of doing this and it's played for drama in her final arc; ranger duties combined with Olympic training and power draining caused these. PlayedForLaughs when [[spoiler:Tommy returned]].
* GirlyBruiser: Wearing a pink dress and jewelry, she'd beat up Putty Patrollers.
* HiddenDepths: Despite being portrayed as a bit of an airhead in early seasons, she's shown to be actually quite proficient at sign language as early as the fifth episode! And in another season one episode, the fact that she's an A/B student indicates even if not on par with Billy and Trini, she's quite intelligent since C is considered average.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: She comes to Tommy's shoulders. He can pick her up easily.
* HumiliationConga: The first half of "Calamity Kimberly" has her suffering a long string of bad luck, eventually resulting in one of Rita's monsters catching her.
* IllGirl: When her Crane Ninja Coin was in the possession of Rita Repulsa & Lord Zedd, she slowly became weaker.
* LeotardOfPower: A justified example, since she's a gymnast.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Averted/Inverted, Kimberly has shorter hair than Tommy or Trini and had a fairly short hairstyle in season 1 and early season 2.

* ValleyGirl: Early on she affected this personality but it was used less and less until it was gone in season 3. By then the concept was dated, and it was 1995, the height of the grunge era.

* NonActionGuy: At first, but he becomes more proactive.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The sensitive guy to Jason and Zack's and later Tommy's manly men.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Instead of saying 'I like this music' he'll say something like 'the lyrics of this song surpass its contemporaries in this genre'. This was toned down somewhat as the series went on.
* TheSmartGuy: He built the communicators, the flying car, fixed Alpha, fixed ''the Command Center''...
* TeenGenius: With a high school education, he can do some amazing techy things, from inventing teleporters to robot repair.
* TookALevelInBadass: In the first fight, he's awkward and has to be bailed out by his teammates. After training with Jason's class at the Youth Center, he's as formidable as the other Rangers. He takes even more levels in Badass as the show progresses, as the third season even shows him defeating a monster solo.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Revealed in one episode to have a fear of fish since childhood and overcomes it by the end of said episode.

* GeniusBruiser: Well versed in kung fu and arguably a solid third to Jason and Tommy in the martial arts department. And a close second to Billy in the smarts department, she spotted Pudgy Pig's weakness before anyone else including Billy and once reactivated Alpha in Billy's absence.
* TheHeart: Extremely loyal and supportive towards the other rangers when they're feeling down, particularly Billy and Kimberly.
* JackOfAllStats: She was probably the most balanced of all the original team. Smart, but not as smart as Billy. Graceful, but not quite as much as Kimberly (who was a gymnast.) Skilled, but not quite up to Jason.

The character that became the face of the franchise. Tommy is the longest serving ranger in the show's history and thus had the longest character arc. Initially the new kid in town, Rita notices Tommy's skills as a martial artist and brainwashed him to become the Green Ranger, using him to defeat the Power Rangers. The other Rangers break her spell and he eventually becomes the SixthRanger. Tommy would become the BreakoutCharacter that helped cement the popularity of the series. He would later go through a few power changes (Green Ranger, White Ranger, White Ninja Ranger, Red Zeo Ranger, Red Turbo Ranger, Black Dino Ranger) and be the undisputed team leader for roughly 3 seasons. Originally a good-natured, absent minded goofy jock, Tommy becomes a mentor figure to several ranger groups through CharacterDevelopment.
