!!The Meritocratic Empire of Mefpan

[[folder:In General]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mefpanflagmeritocracy_2387.png]]
[[caption-width-right:250:The Meritocratic Empire of Mefpan]]

A relatively small island nation somewhere to the south of India. Colonized in the early 20th century by Britain, soon after sold to Prussia/Germany as part of a number of treaties and later returned to British control after the end of the First World War, the country began its bid for independence at the onset of World War Two as its Anglo-German citizenry became increasingly discontent with being regarded as nothing more than a viable naval base in Asia that didn't carry the risk of colonial uprisings with it.

Expeditionary forces of all sides of World War Two clashed on the island chain but more often than not amongst themselves, allowing the young Mefpan-Republican Army to expel the intruders - relations with the former enemies never really recovered as a result of belligerent remarks on Mefpan's behalf.

Aware of its limited territory and the implausibility of surface expansion as a result of the Cold War's onset, the nation began a downright massive construction program that would see the majority of its surface infrastructure moved into large city-sized caverns to escape the looming threat of nuclear devastation or long-strategic bombardment, the latter of which had made itself felt, although to a lesser extent, during the war of independence.

The exact circumstances under which the Republic turned into the Empire, but contrary to what one would expect, a wave of liberalization followed as needlessly strict laws were overturned.

Now, Mefpan stands among the few remaining powers, its subterranean holdings spread far and wide beneath the ocean.

!! Tropes:
* [[Characters/MefhorCanonBlocMefpan Mefpan]]
BiggerIsBetter: A significant part of Mefpan's population is descended from post-[=WW2=] German refugees that sought to escape the battle of influence between the two Superpowers. As such, most of its early developments are very similar to things you'd expect from Nazi Germany. Like the [[BaseOnWheels Gungnir class Citadel Cruisers]] or the [[TankGoodness Corepore Metal I "Kim Sandez" heavy tank]]. Much less impractical than they would be in our world since they operate almost exclusively underground, where bombardment by aircraft is not a problem.
* [[Characters/MefhorCanonBlocFourthReich DisproportionateRetribution: Imperial or Republican, massive retaliation has always been an integral part of the country's military doctrine. It doesn't pull its punches, it just keeps hitting.
* TheEmpire: Subverted. The Imperial era of Mefpan under the ruling Empress saw a wide variety of reforms and a slow turn away from the policy of "shoot first, shoot later and ask questions once the dust settles."
* TheRepublic: Subverted. Even though it called itself a Republic in its early days, it really was more of a PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny, except that the leadership decided to forego 'People's' and 'Democratic' to avoid being lumped into the Soviet bloc.

[[folder:Wilhelmina von Wagnerberg]]
Leader of the Mefpan Republican Army, longtime Lady Castellan of the Republic, Lady Commissar of the Empire, Councillor of Defense of the Meritocracy. She holds numerous titles and has been around for as long as Mefpan has.

!! Tropes:
* BloodKnight: Obviously feels much more comfortable in the midst of combat and splitting heads than sitting in her office and pushing pencils.
* [[spoiler:ExpendableClone]]: [[spoiler:One of the few things she managed to bring along was functioning cloning equipment. She uses it to defy death and as such, recklessly throws her into battles she knows she cannot win for the sake of entertainment.]]
* MadeOfIron: Can take downright massive punishment that would be enough to kill a normal human about a hundred times over. Justified in so far that she had her entire skeleton replaced by metal prosthetics and her long history of combat pretty much taught her to endure excruciating pain with no trouble.
* MoralityChain: The Empress is hers. Arguably, she chained herself considering how she was the one who put her on the throne in the first place.
* [[spoiler:TimeTravel]]: [[spoiler:Past escapades involved her running a large trade vessel headlong into a warp storm in an attempt to return to her old home, sending her back to the Earth of 1939 and leaving her TrappedInThePast.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Often advocates the use of excessive force and deals with enemies very harshly, but it's usually in the best interests of her subordinates. At least, from her perspective.

!!The
Fourth Reich]]
Reich:

[[folder:In General]]
The Fourth Reich, as the name implies, is the direct descendant of the Third Reich, its founders having survived in a secret Nazi colony under Antarctica- specifically, under New Swabia. While its population was then small, over the years it managed to grow, eventually become spread out over all of Antarctica in giant subterranean cities. Its knowledge and understanding of science and technology rapidly progressed, becoming what is best described as Nazi Superscience- now, the Reich operates flying saucers and other such technologies.

!! Tropes:
* [[Characters/MefhorCanonBlocSoviets Soviets]]
ACommanderIsYou: The Wehrmacht is broken down into the following categories:
** '''Elitist'''/'''Powerhouse''' Faction, relying on smaller numbers of Elite units.
** '''Technical''' Faction, bordering on '''Unit Specialist'''.
** '''Espionage''' Faction. [[spoiler: Unless the Tengoku is involved.]]
** Rommel's sub-faction probably counts as '''Brute'''.
** [[spoiler: Viktoria and Erika are '''Game Breakers'''.]]
* [[Characters/MefhorCanonBlocByzantines Byzantines]]
[[/index]]
AlternateHistory: The Third Reich survived under Antarctica as the Fourth Reich.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Most of the leadership are {{Action Girl}}s.
%%* CensorshipBureau: The ''Ministry of Public Enlightenment''.
* CommieNazis: The phrase "National Socialism" should really be "National Communism".
%%* DemocracyIsBad: An important aspect of its ideology.
%%* TheEmpire: To a slightly lesser extent.
* ForScience: The Reich loves scientific progress, and its huge centralized science department has authority to do essentially anything as long as it advances Science!.
* ForYourOwnGood: The state thinks that the people don't fully know what's good for them and uses this to justify its actions.
* TheGreys: The Reich knows that aliens exist. It tries very hard to cover up this fact.
%%* IndustrializedEvil
* {{Irony}}: The Fourth Reich is perfectly happy to be allied with the Soviet Union.
* InterServiceRivalry: There are five armed services in all -- the Wehrmacht, the Schutzstaffel (which actually has sub-armies with it), the Afrika Korps, the Nationale Volksarmee, and the Volkswehr.
* JustFollowingOrders: The ''Fuehrerprinzip'' (Or should that be ''Fuehrerinprinzip''?) still exists.

%%* SecretPolice: The Gestapo and the Sicherheitsdienst.
%%* SocialDarwinist: A variation or two, as expected from the Reich.
%%* StateSec: This is what the Schutzstaffel is.
* ThoseWackyNazis: Predictably, the Reich is made of this. It has everything from the ObstructiveBureaucrat (well, quite a few of those, actually) to the NaziNobleman.
%%* {{Unperson}}: This happens a lot.

[[folder:Viktoria von Hartmann]]
The Fuehrerin and Reich Chancellor of the Fourth Reich, and the most important person in it. She has led it for six years, is its first female leader, and has overseen its transformation into an empire.

She also has a rather bad case of {{Enemy Within}}, but for the most part manages to stop her evil side from taking over. When it does take over, it's because of [[spoiler:an evil spirit that originally created her but is now tormenting both her and her sister.]]

!! Tropes:
%%* ActionGirl
* BreakTheCutie: Although she doesn't show it on the exterior, she is broken inside in a few ways.
* DarkActionGirl: Her evil side is very much this.
* DarkMagicalGirl: Even when not possessed by her evil side, she can turn into this if things get bad enough.
%%* DontYouDarePityMe: Her evil side.
* {{Yandere}}: Don't you even dare to look at her sister.
%%* YouHaveFailedMe: Her evil side does this a lot.
