Egypt, the stronghold of pan-Arabism, fought hard to win its independence from Italian colonialism. The kings and princes who once ruled like Pharaohs were swept away by the progressive force of Nasserism, which laid the foundations for decades of prosperity and economic development. But with the messages and themes of pan-Arabism fading into distant memory, the people seem to have grown sympathetic to the forces of reaction.

* TheAlliance: Egypt is a member of the Union of Arab Republics, a confederal union between Egypt and Iraq that extends into economic and military collaboration between the two countries.

** The [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Progressive_Unionist_Party National Progressive Unionist Party, also known as the Tagammu party]] was originally formed in our timeline by Khaled Mohieddin and the leftist faction of the Arab Socialist Union after Anwar Sadat's rise to power. In this timeline, because Mohieddin succeeded Nasser after his death, the Tagammu Party was formed as the successor to the Arab Socialist Union when the United Arab Republic was dissolved.

* StagedPopulistUprising: Unlike in Iraq or Syria, both of whom are ruled by bloody dictators and have rather sluggish economies, Egypt is actually ''prospering'' and there seems to be little to no material incentives for people to turn against the regime. Upon closer look it's revealed that the CIA, in collaboration with the Muslim Brotherhood, has waged an extensive underground propaganda campaign to turn Egyptians against El-Saeed's government and bring about the overthrow of the pro-German Nasserist regime.

The 4th President of Egypt and successor to Khaled Mohieddin, El-Saeed is a former communist turned hardline Nasserite. His extreme devotion to secularism and opposition to political reform seems to have alienated much of Egyptian society, and as unrest grows, his own allies have begun to see him as a liability.

When the Egyptian Revolution takes place and Egypt's major cities are swept by anti-government protests, Bastawisy and his like-minded colleagues will force El-Saeed to resign and will take over the country in a last-ditch effort to save it from chaos. Field Marshal Muhammad Hussein Tantawi Soliman is a veteran and respected officer in the Egyptian Armed Forces. He has always served Egypt with pride, and that same feeling of patriotism is what led him to overthrowing his former masters and saving his nation from the ills of war and terror. Democracy will soon be dawning upon Egypt, and his sole objective is to make sure it will last.

Men are motivated by different ideas. Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is no different. Now, he may restore order to Egypt through whatever means possible.

There is a lot to be said about Lieutenant General Sami Hafez Anan. Some would say he is a traitor, and point to his suspicious visits to Washington and sympathies to the Muslim Brotherhood. Others would call him a hero, one that has saved Egypt from oppression and who will bring democracy and peace to the country. Khalid Abdel Nasser is the son of the late Gamal Abdel Nasser, and yet his image is far from that of his father. Khalid does not sit at the forefront, his heart does not lie in the podiums in front of the masses, but in the quiet and dark halls of government. The extent of Nasser's influence was not yet known, until now.
----
* DragonAscendant: For years, Khalid has had influence behind the scenes despite never holding any positions of power. He can potentially take control of the country in a coup backed by powerful forces in Egypt's security apparatus to prevent Egypt from abandoning the ideals of his father.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: While his father was extremely popular and seen as an innovative progressive leader in the Arab World, Khalid is seen as the total opposite. He's the face of Egypt's secular, authoritarian establishment that seems to have lost touch with the demands of the people.

** In 1975, Egypt (then part of the United Arab Republic) took over the Suez Canal and sparked a brief war between it and an Italian-led coalition of countries, including Japan. While Italy defeated the UAR militarily, Germany threatened to intervene on the side of the Arabs. To Surur, a close relationship with the Saudis could dissuade the Italians from continuing their hostilities against Egypt and allow the Brotherhood to slowly expand its influence across the Middle East through more practical means. Unfortunately for him, the militants of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad don't agree with this strategy.

** Egypt, which is a Islamic caliphate ruled by a more extreme version of the Muslim Brotherhood in this timeline, has a similar organizational structure to the real-life Islamic State, as evident by their shared name.
** The destruction of the Egyptian pyramids mirrors the demolition of Buddhas of Bamiyan by the Taliban in OTL, only spanning decades rather than weeks.

The Caliph of Egypt and brother of Sayyid Qutb, Mohammad Qutb has carried the legacy of Qutbism since 1988. However, the Caliph is old and frail, and his power has faded along with his mind and strength.

to:

* PuppetKing: While he is Caliph and nominally in charge of Egypt, Qutb's counsel is often ignored by the rest of the Leadership Council or "re-evaluated" by his deputy, who holds real power.
* TakingUpTheMantle: Besides taking over Egypt as Caliph, Mohammad became Sayyid's ideological successor and complemented his brother's thought with his own ideas.
* TheFundamentalist: He is a Sunni fundamentalist and one of the two main figures of Qutbism besides his brother.

to:

The First Deputy to the Caliph and Head of the Shura Council, Mohammad Surur has been the de facto ruler of Egypt since the late 2000s.

to:

* {{Realpolitik}}: Surur has tried to lessen hostilities with Saudi Arabia and distance Egypt from Islamic terrorism in Europe in hopes of saving the regime from self-destruction, even though his predecessors have condemned the Saudis for their liberal leadership and have promoted militancy against the Italian infidels.
* TheDragon: Surur is the Caliph's First Deputy and thus his closest advisor for years. When Qutb's health caught up to him and he was unable to rule in the same manner, Surur was the one who took control of the state and acted on the Caliph's behalf, being in this position ever since.

* CrapsackWorld: Egypt is a poorly developed totalitarian Islamist dictatorship isolated from the outside world, and life in the country is just plain terrible. Most Egyptians aren't even employed and life off of informal jobs and in poor conditions, facing abandonment from the state. Their lives are heavily controlled by the government, which tries to restrict them from even the basest of pleasures. But even if you put all of that aside, life is ''boring.'' There is practically nothing to do besides working and praying, as the country has no access to the internet and the government has banned every popular consumer good from alcohol and tobacco to toys and playing cards on religious grounds.
* CulturalPolice: Egypt's police forces also enforce sharia law and ''Hisbah,'' acting as a religious police and monitoring citizens to ensure they are following Islamic law and steering away from paganism and western influence.

* ForeignRulingClass: A good portion of Egypt's leadership consists of Islamist scholars from every corner of the Arab World, having moved to Egypt after it was taken over by the Qutbists. Only a small percentage of Egyptian government officials were actually born and raised in the country.
* HiddenElfVillage: After the 1981 Suez Crisis, Egypt turned to complete isolation, shunning foreigners and western technology. Three decades later, Egypt has practically remained as a time capsule. Citizens have no way to interact with the outside world and outsiders are treated with suspicion and contempt.
* MonumentalDamage: The Muslim Brotherhood has been demolishing the pyramids of Egypt one by one since 1986, sinking thousands of years of human history underneath the sand and debris. To the Brotherhood, the pyramids are symbols of paganism and false gods, and their continued existence is a disgrace to an Islamic country like Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is demolished at the beginning of MTNO as the government organizes rallies and marches to celebrate the destruction, [[EstablishingCharacterMoment setting the tone for Egypt's current situation.]]
* OffTheGrid: Electronic devices such as phones and computers are non-existent in Egypt, and the country's isolation and poor infrastructure means most citizens don't even have electricity in their homes. The government is paranoid of other countries spying on Egypt through internet networks, and has encouraged citizens to abandon their "material wants" entirely and dedicate themselves to spiritual advancement.
* PaperTiger: While Egypt would seem like [[TheDreaded The Dreaded]] at first, in reality it is a fragile rogue state that was bombed back to the stone age by the Italians and hasn't recovered since. The only hope for the regime is destabilizing the neighboring Baathist republics in hopes that their allies will fill the power vacuum and become their puppets, but the Muslim Brotherhood has become so weak outside of Egypt that its regional chapters in Palestine, Iraq and Syria have begun to act independently and defy Cairo's orders, knowing the Egyptians have no choice but to continue supporting them. [[spoiler: This weakness becomes evident when Italy invades, toppling the Muslim Brotherhood and driving them out of Egypt in a matter of weeks.]]
* StateSec: The ''al-Nizam al-Khas'' [[note]]Special Apparatus[[/note]] is the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, but it its paramilitary activities are only one aspect of the organization. The Apparatus also carries out assassinations against enemies of the regime living overseas or organizes special operations in neighboring countries to strengthen, recruit and train local Muslim Brotherhood cells.
* TheTheocracy: Egypt is an Islamist theocratic regime governed by the most extreme elements of the Muslim Brotherhood. The country is governed through Sharia law and Islamic principles, dictated by the Caliph and his advisors.
