* PokemonSpeak: "I am Groot!"Groot!" As it turns out, his species's larynxes are so stiff, any speech they try to make comes out as that single phrase. Whenever Groot says this phrase, he's saying quite a lot, and it takes careful noting of his inflections to find out what he's saying.

!!I am Tropes:
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Groot was the smallest and kindest of Planet X's ''Flora colossus'' and was thus barely minded by the others.
* TheBigGuy: Shares this with Drax.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: The big guy to Rocket Raccoon's little guy.
* CharacterisationMarchesOn: In ''[[{{ComicBook/Annihilation}} Annihilation: Conquest]]'' and the earlier issues of the series, he was capable of saying other things than "I am Groot". During Star-Lord's miniseries, he was also a ''colossal'' jerk (think Doctor Doom, but in tree form). He mellowed out after that. This is likely because when he was first introduced to modern audiences, he was intended to be the same "Groot" who had ''attacked'' Earth in one of Marvel's early pre-Comicbook/FantasticFour "[[{{Kaiju}} giant monster]]" comics. After he'd developed into a more sympathetic character, it was [[RetCon heavily implied]] that he is ''not,'' in fact, the same being that attacked Earth, but merely another member of the same species.
* DeusExitMachina: Generally regarded as the team's heaviest hitter, Groot was absent from the team's official foundation as he was still recovering from his sacrifice in ''Annihilation: Conquest''. Likewise, whenever he needs to be written out for drama they simply have him make a slow recovery from a prior battle.
* TheExile: Banished from his home planet after A) killing another member of his species to defend a maintenance mammal it was brutalizing, and B) releasing a human subject that was kidnapped for scientific purposes.
* FakeKing: [[spoiler:He's not actually a king.]]
* GeniusBruiser: He is apparently quite smart and eloquent, we just can't understand what he's saying. He's also got a fantastic right hook.
* GentleGiant: Big as a tree and a pretty friendly guy.
* GlassCannon: In Bendis stories he gets destroyed easily.
* HealingFactor: A very impressive one. Groot can, depending on the circumstances, regenerate lost limbs and even his entire body within seconds of being destroyed. Though going from a single splinter usually takes much longer and requires water.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Rocket.
* TheIdealist: Groot is almost nothing but optimism.
* NoodleIncident: Groot somehow has a higher bounty than Rocket.
* PlantAliens: He's an alien being resembling a walking tree.
* PokemonSpeak: "I am Groot!"
* RedBaron: Groot, King of Planet X, Ruler of All He Shades, [[SpeciesSurname Flora Colossus]].
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: Groot comes across Numinus in space. She's currently in a HeroicBSOD after witnessing the recent tragedies of the Marvel Universe such as [[ComicBook/AvengersDisassembled Wanda's mental breakdown]], the ComicBook/CivilWar, and [[ComicBook/AvengersVsXMen Dark Phoenix Cyclops killing Xavier]]. She questions if anything is even salvageable anymore but Groot restores her faith with three words. Of course, since this is Groot, those three words hold infinitely more meaning than they seem.
* {{Retcon}}: The Groot from ''Tales To Astonish #13'' is not the Groot that joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, rather another larger member of the species of which Guardians!Groot is the smallest and least cruel.
* {{Treants}}: Groot is a rare science fiction example of this trope, appearing as a towering, plant-like humanoid alien chiefly composed of wood. A bit of a borderline case, as he doesn't share many traits associated with this trope such as an association with forests, although he does posses some degree of control over plant life.
* VerbalTicName: [[CatchPhrase I am Groot!]]
* WhenTreesAttack: He's a tree-like alien called the ''Flora colossus'', with a very strong right hook.
* TheWorfEffect: See GlassCannon especially.

-> ''"Ain't no thing like me, ''''cept''' me!"''
--> -- '''Rocket Raccoon''', ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy''

Rocket Raccoon is a Creator/MarvelComics character created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen, first appearing in ''Marvel Preview'' #7 (June, 1976).

Partially inspired by the song "Rocky Raccoon" by Music/TheBeatles, Rocket mostly served as a {{joke character}} for the majority of his existence in the Franchise/MarvelUniverse, only appearing in ''ten'' issues over thirty years.

It wasn't until the ''ComicBook/{{Annihilation}}: Conquest'' event that Rocket would gain some prominence, showing up as a supporting character in the ''ComicBook/StarLord'' tie-in series. His role there then segued into the rebooted ''ComicBook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'' title, where he'd establish himself as a prominent member of the team, appearing in just about every iteration of the lineup ever since.

Rocket is notable for his deceptively scrappy attitude, extensive knowledge of weaponry, and plentiful connections in the cosmic underworld. He's also become [[ThoseTwoGuys synonymous for his friendship]] with sentient tree ComicBook/{{Groot}} since ''Annihilation: Conquest'', and they're rarely seen apart from one another.

Because of his popularity with audiences, Rocket appears in most interpretations of ''Guardians of the Galaxy'' in other media. He made his first appearance outside of the comics in ''WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'' on Creator/DisneyXD, where he was voiced by Creator/GregEllis. He also appeared on the ''WesternAnimation/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'' cartoon on Creator/DisneyXD, voiced there by Creator/TrevorDevall, while Creator/NolanNorth portrays him in ''VideoGame/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyTheTelltaleSeries''. Rocket is also voiced by Creator/BradleyCooper (with motion capture performed by Sean Gunn) in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse, making his debut in their [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy 2014 film of the same name]]. Cooper and Gunn reprise the role in its 2017 sequel, as well as ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'' and ''Film/AvengersEndgame''.

For the original version of Rocket (pre-''ComicBook/{{Annihilation}}''), see also ''ComicBook/RocketRaccoon1985''.
