Little is known of the Indigo Tribe as they are a reclusive group of monks with their own language known to only to themselves (and untranslatable by the Green Lanterns.) The Indigo Light stands for compassion, defined as the ability to empathize with others while retaining distance and understanding the motivations of others. As such, they are able to access and redirect the powers of other lanterns when they are present, they possess the powers of flight, teleportation (though this consumes a lot of their energy), and flight auras. They are also able to force compassion on those who have none. [[spoiler: The rings actually target people who lack compassion, meaning that ''every member of the Tribe'' is a BrainwashedAndCrazy former CompleteMonster.]]

During the final battle of the Sinestro Corps War, one of the female Guardians of the Universe was burned by the touch of the Anti-Monitor. [[Understatement This fundamentally changed her]]. She soon began exhibiting suspicious behavior, including goading her fellow Guardians into increasingly dubious decisions regarding the GLC and emotion, manipulating other Corps into conflict with the Green Lanterns, and dispatching agents to locate the corpse of the Anti-Monitor. All the while, she secretly began composing a "Book of the Black", chronicling those who would play a role in the upcoming Blackest Night.

As the Blackest Night loomed, Scar engineered a riot in Oa's Sciencells, during which she destroyed the planet's shield. With the descent of the black rings, Scar turned on her fellow Guardians, revealing her allegiance to Nekron, and taking them prisoner. She then travelled with them to the dead planet of Ryut, where she transported the Black Lantern Central Power Battery (containing the corpse of the Anti-Monitor) to Earth in time for Nekron's emergence into the physical world. Once on Earth, she was destroyed by Hal Jordan and the New Guardians, who combined their individual lights into white light, obliterating her.

During the Blackest Night, the Black Lantern of Ronnie Raymond, aka Firestorm, stood out among his colleagues as one of the most sadistic and twisted. Upon his creation, he sought out Jason Rusch, the current host of the Firestorm Matrix, and forcibly seperated Rusch and his partner/girlfriend Gehenna. He then bonded with Rusch, and, using information plucked from Rusch's brain, turned Gehenna into salt whilst harvesting her heart. During the later battle in Coast City, one of the White Rings regurgitated by the resurrected Black Hand attached itself to the Black Lantern Ronnie Raymond, bringing him back from the dead and separating him from Jason.

As both of Firestorm's hosts are made aware of this by Professor Stein, the presence within the matrix makes itself known, emerging in the form of a ringless Black Lantern Firestorm. This entity, calling itself Deathstorm, absorbs both Stein and Jason's father, and sets about on a dual mission: to entice the aforementioned second Big Bang, and to destroy the White Lantern Power Battery, which crashed to Earth in New Mexico at the conclusion of Blackest Night. Originally from the planet Maltus, one of their scientists performed an experiment to observe the beginning of creation, which had dire consequences for the universe (just ''which'' consequences depends on which {{Cosmic Retcon}}s have occured). In atonement, the Maltusians swore to fight evil, and moved to the planet Oa at the geographical (cosmographical?) center of the universe. Without a doubt the most powerful Green Lantern in the entire corps, Mogo is ancient, wise, and nearly unstoppable in combat. The reason for this is simple: ''Mogo is a planet.'' His history has never been revealed, and if anyone knows how a sentient planet came into being, they're not talking. Alone among Green Lanterns, Mogo can create energy constructs of any color, indistinguishable from "real" objects or people.

A recent Guardian experiment, these Lanterns are selected to act as internal police for the Green Lanterns. Their minds are linked to the Book of Oa and its laws, and each Alpha Lantern is given two power rings as well as the ability to drain the full charge of any standard Green Lantern ring. This group has parallels to the Manhunters, most evident in their rigid, dogmatic mentality and their mantra, "No Lantern escapes the Alpha Lanterns." John Stewart was offered the chance to join this division but he declined.
