* AffablyEvil: As long as you're not pissing him off or getting in his way, Michael generally is easy going and doesn't go out of his way to seek harm.

** To Neil McCauley from ''Film/{[Heat}}", Michael is basically what would happen if Neil had a family and decided to go straight for them. He even pulls a heist that's almost beat for beat the first heist from Heat. Also like Neil, Michael realizes that his criminal lifestyle isn't fulfilling and it leaves him miserable and lonely.
** To Tony Soprano from "Series/TheSopranos", both are depressed criminals who seek therapy for their psychological issues, both are prone to hysterics and have [[HairTriggerTemper tempers]], both love old movies, and both have children who frustrate them, though partially this is because of their flaws as parents. Michael does manage to become a better husband and father to his family, and has a healthier relationship with them by the end, while Tony only gets worse as The Sopranos moves along, and increasingly alienates those he loves.

Added DiffLines:

* TookALevelInCynic: Upon realizing that leaving his life of crime wasn't all it was cracked up to be, he becomes far more sour and cynical in his disposition. Trevor even calls him a 'depressing cynic.'
* TookALevelInJerkass: It is implied before he went into witness protection, he was closer with his wife and children. But since they moved to Los Santos, Michael became far more sour and a jackass to them all, which eventually leads to them leaving him for a while.
* TookALevelInKindness: On the opposite end, once his family leaves him, he becomes more reflective of his actions. While he doesn't fully change his ways, he does change his attitude and has a much healthier relationship with his family by the end of the game.

** While the romance has dried up, and his relationships with his kids are shaky at best. He sincerely cares about Amanda and his children, though his inability to show it in a healthy way, as well as his [[HairTriggerTemper violent temper]] drives them to [[spoiler: drive them away, though they eventually come back.]] By the end of the game, he's began mending fences with his family and they have a healthier relationship.
** Despite how dysfunctional their friendship is, Michael does care about Trevor and admits that he missed him during the 9 years before the events of the game. Even during the North Yankton mission, there's the sense that Michael had sincere regrets about how it all went down and felt guilt for betraying Trevor. [[spoiler: He also feels regret for killing Trevor, should that ending be chosen and ends his relationship with Franklin because of it.]]

* FatalFlaw: His [[DidntThinkThisThrough tendency to rush into things without considering all the consequences]], as well as [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter putting his trust into people that he really shouldn't.]] Franklin's a smart guy, and is far more stable than [[HairTriggerTemper Michael]], [[TheUnfettered Trevor]], or even his [[TooDumbToLive best friend Lamar]], but he has a bad habit of jumping in bed with people who are clearly using him for their own aims. Except for Michael and Trevor, almost everyone who he works with either screws him over or is just using him for their own ends. Franklin wants to be a big player, but he lacks the patience to bide his time and find people who are dependable. [[spoiler: These flaws can be exploited if he chooses to kill Michael or Trevor.]]

* FormerlyFat: It's not emphasized, but a conversation with Michael Franklin mentions that he used to be "bigger" before he started working out.

* BeingEvilSucks: Michael's life of crime hasn't really done wonders for him, and he knows full well that a life of crime is an empty, fraught one. But [[BecauseImGoodAtIt he's just too damn good at it to change.]] [[spoiler: He does improve, and quits a life of crime completely at the end of the game.]]

Added DiffLines:

* ReluctantPsycho: Michael is disturbed by how easily he can commit violence without feeling too bad about it, and one of his big fears is that he's more like [[TheUnfettered Trevor]] than anyone else, which of course Trevor exploits in their arguments. He goes to therapy to deal with these fears, though it doesn't really help because of Michael's issues and the fact his therapist is an opportunistic snake who wants to use Michael for his own ends.

Added DiffLines:

* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Michael often invokes this in regards to them and Trevor. He says that neither he nor Franklin are innocent and far from being angels, but Trevor is on a completely different level, which scares him.
