An Amalgam member, and complete ''nutjob'', Gates takes over as their primary field leader after Gauron's apparent death. Willing to murder people at the drop of a pin, Gates stands out as quite possibly the craziest character in the entire show, and concocts a series of increasingly over the top plans to eliminate Mithril.

His codename is Mr. Kalium.

* AdaptationalVillainy: He was already a mean son of a bitch in the novels, where he shows the beheaded head of Yu Fan's sister to her, but in the anime adaptation he doesn't lose a single minute to prove himself as someone as evil and disgusting as Gauron.
* ArcVillain: Of the Hong Kong arc.

* BadBoss: Exagerated. This guy kills his underlings for his own fuckups, and treats them as toys/punchbags, and he's also implied to sexual harras Yu Lan. As if all that wasn't enough, his psychotic breaks makes him even more dificult to handle, killing his own men over delusions
* BestialityIsDepraved: He likes to spend his time watching videos of little animals such as kittens and squirrels, alone, in the dark, oh and with a tissue box in his hand and naked.
* BigBad: He replaces Gauron as the main antagonist in ''The Second Raid''.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Between his over the top hairstyle, and his even more over the top personality, you would tell this guy belongs in a comedy show and not in the battlefield. But that entertaining charm rarely eclipses a deadly hability for combat along with a cruelty to match

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: An obvious lunatic, yet a dangerous pilot.

* FauxAffablyEvil: He's highly entertaining to watch, and can fake nice, though only for a minute or two.

* TriggerHappy: He tends to pull the trigger before even thinking. For example, killing the man who was ''supposed'' to pay them for their goods, before even thinking of a way to get the money from him. And then immediately killing his own soldier when the soldier pointed this out.
* WhatTheHellAreYou?: With his encounter at Nanjing, Gates defeated Sousuke with sheer lambda driver force,[[spoiler: so it's understandable that he has a FreakOut when he sees him again, this time completely owning him.]]
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Slightly averted; If we check his behaviour, we see two symptoms specified by Kalinin as being rooted in his use of the drug used by the A-21 terrorists (sudden memory loss and unpredictable outbursts of rage).
