[[folder:Peter Griffin]]
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/postacie_7992.png]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

An obese father from Rhode Island who's mentally retarded. Used to work at a toy factory before the owner of the plant died, then worked as a fisherman for a couple of seasons, and now works a desk job at a brewery.\\
Voiced by SethMacFarlane, using a voice that sounds like [[AllInTheFamily Archie Bunker]]'s, only whinier.

* [[AbusiveParents Abusive Dad]]: He wasn't always like this in early seasons, although now he's a lot worse than the Jerkass version of [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Homer Simpson.]][[hottip:*:and proof that you don't need a HairTriggerTemper to be a terrible parent.]] However, he didn't become a full on abusive dad until SethMacFarlane left as the showrunner, whereas in seasons 4 and 5, his abuse towards Meg could be considered joking around with her (even if Meg didn't think so).
* {{Acrofatic}}
* TheAlcoholic: Far worse in his parenting, but less so than [[TropeCodifier Homer]] when it comes to his alcoholism. Though there ''are'' times where his drinking ''can'' spiral out of control, but still.
* AllWomenArePrudes: A believer of this trope. Lucky for him, he's married to an aversion (who even agrees with him about the trope).
-->"You know what really grinds my gears? This LindsayLohan. Lindsay Lohan with all those little outfits, jumping around there on stage, half-naked with your little outfits. Ya know? You're a... You're out there jumping around and I'm just sitting here with my beer. So, what am I supposed to do? What you want? You know, are we gonna go out? Is that what you're trying to - why why are you leaping around there, throwing those things all up in my, over there in my face? What do you want, Lindsay? Tell me what you want. Well, I'll tell you what you want, you want '''nothing'''. You want nothing. All right? Because we all know that no woman ''anywhere'' wants to have sex with ''anyone'', and to titillate us with any thoughts otherwise is - is just bogus."
** Quite ironically, the show depicts women in the [[AllWomenAreLustful opposite.]]
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Before evolving into a deliberately abusive one.
* AmericanAccents: See the section on Boston for details.
* AnimalMotifs: Pigs, for [[FatBastard undoubtedly obvious reasons.]]
* AnnoyingLaugh: Peter has an incredibly annoying laugh.
* AntiRoleModel: Pretty much ever since day one.
* [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny Attention Deficit...Ooh, Shiny Red Ball]]
* AttentionWhore: He sure loves being in the spotlight.
* AuthorAvatar: Has shades of this for Seth [=MacFarlene=], mostly revolving around his projects and taste in pop culture.
* AxCrazy: On his bad days.
* BiTheWay: Bordering on DepravedBisexual.
* BigBeautifulMan: In the episode "He's Too Sexy For His Fat."
* BullyHunter: He sometimes defends Meg and Chris by dishing {{No Holds Barred Beatdown}}s to their bullies, which is hypocritical since he bullies Meg most of the time.
* BumblingDad: In the earlier seasons, Peter did seem to try to do the best for his kids, even if it never turned out right.
* ButtMonkey
** IronButtMonkey: Likely balancing out his numerous {{Karma Houdini}}s.
* {{Camp}}
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Pre [[{{Uncancelled}} uncancellation]], Peter was still an UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist, but little past an exagerrated BumblingDad, and usually more InnocentlyInsensitive than outright callous. Most of the early episodes revolved around dilemmas exacerbated by his well intentioned attempts to care for his family.
* CloudCuckooLander: He's arguably the most observant (and sometimes savviest) of the wackiness of the universe around them, and is the most frequent supplier of it too.
* CrazyJealousGuy
* DirtyCoward
* DisproportionateRetribution: He was given a coupon by Ernie the Giant Chicken, and starts a fight with him all because the coupon ''turned out to be expired''. They go at it again after an argument of paying the cheque when having dinner at a restaurant.
** And he once shot Meg with a pistol when she said hi to him.
** As well as attacking his 13-year old neighbor because he bullied him.
** Since the show's revival, Peter seems to be unleashing this on others frequently, especially after he TookALevelInJerkass. To the point where he may as well be the secondth master of this trope.
* TheDitz: Peter really ain't smart at all. Well, duh.
* DisabilityAsAnExcuseForJerkassery: Uses his mental retardation to get away with a lot of jerkassery.
* DomesticAbuser: PlayedForLaughs most of the time, and Lois tends to give as good as she gets.
* DrunkenMaster: He's a professional piano player when intoxicated.
* {{Expy}}: [=McFarlane=] once said that he's like "[[AllInTheFamily Archie Bunker]] without the understanding of what he's doing."
* ExtremeOmnisexual: He is attracted to women, has had sexual relationships with men (Bill Clinton for example), is Ambiguously Bi and in one instance was shown to have intentions of wanting to have sex with a tiny female rat and also was in an abusive sexual relationship with a male bull who had raped him.
* FatBastard: He's even depicted in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUvp9qVd90Q pig form]]'' in one CutawayGag.
* FatBestFriend: To Joe, Quagmire, Cleveland and Brian. [[VitriolicBestBuds Most of the time.]]
* FatIdiot
* FatSlob
* FauxAffablyEvil: Depends on the episode, where he varies from this to AffablyEvil to just NeutralGood or TrueNeutral.
* TheFool
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Choleric and the Melancholic.
* FreudianExcuse: One could say his sociopathy and mental disorder was attributed from being bullied and apparently being used as a sex slave for '''''[[AndIMustScream 8 years]]'''''.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Oh yes.
--> '''Peter:''' Hey, everybody! Meg just had her first period!

--> '''Quagmire:''' Yes, Peter. That's very hot and I'll deal with it in the morning, but right now, I'm exhausted!
* {{Gasshole}}
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Very so often.
* HeroesWantRedheads: Although he's ''far'' from being a hero.
* {{Hypocrite}}: In "Stewie Loves Lois", he sued Dr.Hartman because he thought he molested him, this was ''after'' he attempted to grope his wife (he ended up touching Stewie instead).
** HypocriticalHumor: He insults women for being fat and ugly, but he isn't that good looking himself.
-->'''Peter:''' Men aren't fat. Only fat women are fat.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Some of his more thoughtless actions in earlier seasons count as this. Less so in later seasons, where he is more just an apathetic {{Jerkass}}.
* ItAmusedMe
* ItsAllAboutMe: In later seasons. He has his selfish moments early on too, but is much more well intentioned the majority of the time.
* IAmNotShazam: [[invoked]] Peter often calls characters in movies or films by the title of the movie or film in question, such as ''{{Scrubs}}'', Black ''Scrubs'', ''Film/{{Jaws}}'', and Bigger ''Jaws''.
* JadedWashout
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold --> {{Flanderization}} --> {{Jerkass}}
** DependingOnTheWriter he can revert back to being a JerkWithAHeartOfGold or act outright FauxAffablyEvil or worse (though he eventually became more consistantly sympathetic).
*** JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In a bad mood.
** You can accuse him of many things, but [[YourCheatingHeart infidelity]] isn't one of them. The few times he supposedly cheated were either aversions or purely PlayedForLaughs.
* KarmaHoudini: He's gotten away with murder on several occasions if the cutaways are to be believed. In-{{canon}}, he was sent to prison for one week for accidently blowing up a children's hospital.
** IdiotHoudini: That and many examples can be owed more to his stupidity than his callousness. Given [[PsychopathicManchild his character]] [[HanlonsRazor it's hard to tell on occasion]].
*** That's Seth's explanation for the insensitivity he displayed in "When You Wish Upon a Wienstien."
** Meg lampshades that most of the things he's done really ought to have landed him in prison.
* LackOfEmpathy
* LargeHam
* LazyHusband
* LethallyStupid: [[{{Flanderization}} In the later seasons]]. His stupidity has reached a point to where he's extremely dangerous to those around him, and possibly sociopathic.
--> '''Peter:'''(screaming and being held down in a straight jacket [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext after Brian switches his "I Can't Believe Its Not Butter with actual butter]].)
--> '''Lois:''' I don't know Doctor. Looking back, I think it may have been real butter.
--> '''Doctor:''' Your husband murdered three children.
* LikeAGodToMe: What he thinks of {{Music/KISS}}.
* ManChild
* TheMillstone: Frequently:
-->'''Lois''': You're ''unbelievable!'' The last four days have been a living hell! Our baby is at home all by himself yet instead of getting us home you've managed to make things worse at every turn! A monkey would be a refreshing step up from you! A monkey would talk less! Here's a little tip. If your instinct tells you to do something, don't do it! If your instinct tells you not to do something, '''''IT'S PROBABLY THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!!'''''
* MotorMouth: When he's a dog at least.

* [[IWasBeatenByAGirl My Son Was Beaten By A Girl]]: He was upset when Stewie was beaten up by Suzie Swanson, so he put Stewie on steroids.
** He himself got brutally beaten by [[TheDogBitesBack Meg after she finally snapped]], and usually gets his ass handed to him whenever he and Lois have physical clashes.
* PapaWolf: [[spoiler: He gets really hostile towards Quagmire when he tries to have sex with Meg once she turns 18.]] [[OutOfCharacterMoment This is especially jarring when he's usually ignoring or flat-out abusing her.]] [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold With a few exceptions.]]
** It might have less to do with Meg (he didn't mind one off character Jerome having, quote, "a lot of nasty ass sex with Meg", and more to do with Quagmire, one of his best friends, who he knows as a matter of fact is a sexual predator with a laundry list of [=STDs=]. [[JerkassHasAPoint Even abusive parents have their point.]]
* TheProtagonist
* PsychopathicManchild: While he's not the [[HairTriggerTemper easily-provoked]] variety, this is due to his mental problem.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Chris' Sensitive Guy.
* SitcomArchNemesis: Regularly gets into epically destructive fights with Ernie the Giant Chicken.
* SmallNameBigEgo: An ego ''bigger'' than his head and stomach.
-->'''Lois:''' Aagh, I HATE what you've become! Why don't you go back to that doctor and have him suck the fat out of ''your head?!''
-->'''Peter:''' Maybe I will. Then I'll put it on my feet and skate around Paul Bunyan's giant skillet to cook his flapjacks!
-->'''Lois:''' That doesn't make any sense!
-->'''Peter:''' [[ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful It doesn't have to. I'M BEAUTIFUL!]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Lois after being called TheMillstone. It's enough to make Lois ''feel bad'' afterwards.
-->'''Peter''': You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right. I talk too much. I also listen too much. Oh, I can be a cold-hearted cynic like you, but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. But you think what you want about me. I'm not changing. I like- I like me. My kids like me. My friends like me, 'cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.
* TheSociopath: [[DependingOnTheWriter Depending on the episode]].
** SociopathicHero
* StrawMisogynist
* TemporarilyAVillain: Especially in [[SeasonalRot later seasons]].
** VillainProtagonist: Increasingly so as he gets {{Flanderiz|ation}}ed in each passing season (see above)
* ThisLoserIsYou: Yup.
* TooDumbToLive - on which ''Petarded'' [[LampshadeHanging hangs a lantern]].
* TookALevelInDumbass: He is much stupider than he was in the early seasons.
** TookALevelInJerkass: He always was somewhat selfish and sexist. However, in the first few seasons, he seemed to do insane actions to, at least in his own mind, better the life of his family. By season 6, he was turned into a full time jerk who is even implied to be a psychotic killer according to the cutaways.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Ugly Guy to Lois' Hot Wife.
* UnconfessedUnemployment: In the pilot.
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: He's the main protagonist of the show, but is very [[DeadpanSnarker snarky,]] [[ItsAllAboutMe arrogant,]] [[AntiRoleModel far from the best of role-models,]] and quite [[{{Jerkass}} mean-spirited.]]
* [[{{ViolentGlaswegian}} Violent]] [[{{FightingIrish}} Irishman]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: With all his friends and neighbors.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: During the events of ''Super Griffins''.
* WellDoneSonGuy: During the early seasons, Peter is shown wanting respect from his father Francis. He even hires a band to play sappy SitCom music for his moment. Francis eventually admits that he does love Peter, he just doesn't like him.
** This trope is played straight when he gains the approval of his biological father.

[[folder: Lois Griffin (née Pewterschmidt)]]
[[quoteright:122:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lois_booty_300_5267.gif]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

A woman from the richer side of Rhode Island that teaches piano lessons to children. Voiced by Alex Borstein, she had a VocalEvolution since the show was {{Uncancelled}}.
* ActionMom[=/=]BadassAdorable: In "Lethal Weapons." Also, in the episode "Lois Kills Stewie," when she could hold her own in a fight against ''[[EnfantTerrible Stewie.]]''
* AlmightyMom: Becomes this in "[[Recap/FamilyGuyS9E4HalloweenOnSpoonerStreet Halloween On Spooner Street]]" by telling off another mother because her child stole Stewie's candy.
* AlphaBitch: Acted like one in high school.
* AbusiveParent: Has done Emotional Abuse towards Meg for quite some time, once even hinting for Meg to commit suicide with pills. She's also been pretty nasty to Chris on some occasions.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Same evolution as Peter albeit to a slightly lesser extent.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In some episodes.
** In early episodes, whenever Peter did something to usurp her from a position of authority, such as the run for schoolboard president or as a theatre director, she later shows up to watch the results of his antics, stating it's only because she wants to watch him fail and see the people publically ''destroy'' him (only to completely lose her cool in public when this failed).
* BiTheWay: In response to Peter's AllWomenArePrudes rant above, she delivers this line:
--> '''Lois''': He's right, women are such teases! That's why I went back to men.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Lois' CloserToEarth role in early seasons was completely genuine, to the point of nearing outright meekness, having only substantial moments of weakness or selfishness that she was almost always remorseful about afterwards.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates
* DeadpanSnarker: It comes with the [[CharacterizationMarchesOn characterization]]. She can be very snarky towards [[ButtMonkey Brian and Meg]], sometimes [[TooDumbToLive Peter]].
* DependingOnTheWriter: At times she can be a compassionate MotherBear, the voice of reason, and someone to confide in for advice. Most of the time, [[{{Jerkass}} not]] [[AbusiveParents so]] [[BitchInSheepsClothing much.....]]
* DistaffCounterpart: Is almost (d)evolving into this in later episodes, a lot of her role consisting of joining Peter in giggling over immature gags or even sharing similar sociopathic tendencies. The extent of this is RuleOfFunny however.
* FieryRedhead
* {{Flanderization}}: Originally a genuinely compassionate MamaBear whose occasional bouts of self righteousness and impulsiveness led to NotSoDifferent moments involving her husband, in later seasons is an extreme BitchInSheepsClothing and is almost as [[{{Jerkass}} callous and self centered]] as Peter. Especially towards Meg, who she seems to outright hate, and sometimes towards Peter.
** For the most part her ''persona'' is based on RuleOfFunny or DependingOnTheWriter (even more so than the majority of the cast). Whether she is genuinely [[WomenAreWiser wiser]] or a [[JerkAss female version of Peter]] depends on where the gag takes her.
* TheGamblingAddict
* GenkiGirl: Especially since the revival, to disturbing levels.
* HotMom: A source of quite a few jokes (and episodes) is how Peter managed to marry the rich, beautiful, talented Lois Pewterschmidt.
* ISurrenderSuckers: Lois is about to be taken in for shoplifting in "Breaking Out is Hard to Do." She goes to get her purse...and makes a vehicular escape.
* {{Jerkass}} <--> JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In later seasons (though arguably more a case of ComedicSociopathy early on).
** By the end of season 8, her {{Jerkass}}ness is comparably worse than Peter's, because although Peter dwells on the edge of ComedicSociopathy, he is obviously too stupid to know any better and can never really grasp any Aesops that are thrown his way for long (although he does have his PetTheDog moments), but Lois obviously knows better and yet acts meanly in more insidious ways.
* KarmaHoudini: While Flanderization has made her near equally abrasive and selfish as Peter, she tends to face consequences for her actions or learn from her mistakes the least out of all the family (which is saying a lot), designated more often into StraightMan role and having her JerkAss tendencies played more for minor comic relief.
* LackOfEmpathy: At her worst.
* TheLadette: To an extent.
* MamaBear but sometimes also [[AbusiveParents Abusive Mom]]
** Take into account the HalloweenEpisode, where, after an older kid steals Stewie's candy, she makes him give Stewie his candy back... then makes him give Stewie his own candy, and tells the kid's mother to also give her 80 bucks. The fact that Stewie is visibly disturbed by this makes it even more of a CrowningMomentOfFunny.
** It's become something of a running gag to mention that Meg was entirely unplanned for and was almost aborted. During her second pregnancy (again unplanned for due to a broken condom) Lois apparently drank and smoke a lot in lieu of an abortion but stopped halfway which is why Chris is so stupid. She also used marijuana while pregnant with Stewie which is why he's so intelligent.
** She threatened Quagmire after he attempted to sleep with Meg now that she was 18, saying she'd cut his penis off and feed it to Brian if he goes near Meg again.
* MsFanservice: Some episodes will have her dressing revealingly.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Lois's reaction to Meg calling her out on NotSoAboveItAll below in the episode "Seahorse Seashell Party."
* NotSoAboveItAll: Meg has called her out on the fact that she is generally no better than a drug addicted whore who has let both Bill Clinton and Gene Simmons "go to town on her".
* ReallyGetsAround: Implied in her younger days. She was called "Loose Lois" for a reason.
* RebelliousPrincess: Sort of; she's from an EXTREMELY rich family but chose to marry low-class yokel Peter for love.
* SuperStrength: During the events of ''Super Griffins''.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Is given one by her ''mentally retarded husband,. Peter''.
* TokenGoodTeammate: In early seasons.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the first season, she was a calm yet stern mother who always was wiser then Peter. Over the other two pre-revival seasons (actually starting with "The Son Also Draws"), some flaws began to show in her seemingly-perfect persona, yet she was still a nice person to have has a mother. When the show came back, however, she essentially became a female version of Peter.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Hot Wife to Peter's Ugly Guy.
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist
* WomenAreWiser: Most of the time, anyway.
** It DEFINITELY applies with respect to intelligence... she is smarter than Peter by leaps and bounds. The moral component of that trope is where the grey area comes in, and [[PsychopathicManchild Peter]] hardly prevails here.
*** Even with her own flawed moments and [[TookALevelInJerkass Taking Several Levels In Jerkass]], Peter has only had moral ground over her ''once'' in twenty years. He savored it well.
* YourCheatingHeart: She has cheated on Peter several times.

[[folder: Megan "Meg" Griffin]]
[[quoteright:210:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6599354_std_3372.jpg]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

An average teenager with average teen problems. Probably the only normal one of the family. Although lately, she's so psychologically screwed up that she's basically Walking BlackComedy. Voiced by LaceyChabert in the first season and MilaKunis in the rest.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating %% If you don't think it fits, just remove it%%
* {{Acrofatic}}: Although Meg is "overweight," she has no problem moving around like a skinny person.
* {{Adorkable}}: Meg's social awkwardness and how warm-hearted she is comes off as very adorkable.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Sadly.
* AxCrazy: Shows tendencies of this.
* {{Badass}}
* BareYourMidriff: In "Don't Make Me Over" and "Halloween on Spooner Street."
* BeautifulAllAlong: She is proven to be this in the episode "Don't Make Me Over."
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: If you are male and were nice to her, [[StalkerWithACrush you will probably regret it.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Meg Griffin has been described by Brian as "far sweeter and kinder than the typical American girl" and has put up with a lot of abuse these past couple of years. However under the right circumstances, Meg could unleash [[UnstoppableRage her repressed rage]] on anyone that pisses her off enough or have prison life [[TookALevelInBadass turn her into]] [[TranquilFury hardened badass]] [[WhosLaughingNow that her whole family]] [[FromNobodyToNightmare is DEATHLY afraid of]].
* BigWhat: Se does this in "Dial Meg For Murder."
* BiTheWay: Asking Connie if she can think about her while taking a shower.
* BlindWithoutEm
* BorrowedCatchphrase: "Shut up, dad!"
* BrainyBrunette: Apparently, shes very good at Anatomy. She even got an internship and saved Peter's life with her skills. It was also mentioned that she gets good grades in school.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter --> {{Flanderization}} --> ButtMonkey
** At first was merely a BrattyTeenageDaughter indirectly humiliated by her [[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents family's well intentioned bumbling or quirkiness]]. This [[{{Flanderization}} evolved]] into the entire universe growing a profound hatred of her, with practically everyone - even her own family - showing a casual disregard for her well-being.
** Fortunately it is starting to get toned down (there are maybe three prominent examples that spring to mind in season, and two of them aren't really that horrible; in one they aren't overly rude, in the second it was kind of HypocriticalHumor (Peter is worried about the guy doing his wife, yet has no problem with him nailing his teenaged daughter, which is arguably worse).
** In one episode, Meg's mention of her teacher "rubbing her shoulders for 45 seconds" is taken seriously and Lois is shown to be quite concerned. Though when her story gets worse, Lois doesn't quite focus on what Meg's saying.
** In the ''{{WesternAnimation/South Park}}'' parody episode ''Cartoon Wars'', she is the only character without dialogue.
* BrokenBird: Some episodes depict her being both emotionally fragile and disturbed, derived from a desperation for love and attention.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In earlier episodes, while still somewhat luckless, Meg was a far less exaggerated punching bag. She was actually a primary target of concern and affection from her parents, most of her abuse stemming from [[InnocentlyInsensitive their inadvertent and non discriminate bumbling]]. This was actually taken to the point of [[SpoiledBrat affecting her demeanor]], often acting like a somewhat self absorbed and manipulative DaddysGirl.
* ChewToy: Yes, plenty of fans enjoy Meg's ButtMonkey status.
* DepravedBisexual: She is shown to have a crush on Connie. This is apparent when she tongue kisses her unconscious body in "Dial Meg for Murder" and in "Stew-roids" when she grumbled that she was still going to masturbate to Connie in the bath even after Connie said no.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: She pretended to be a lesbian to be accepted, and she falls obsessively in love with any man who treats her nicely.
* TheDogBitesBack: Season Eight onwards depict Meg getting the occasional retaliation to her abuse, becoming more snarky and tempremental.
* TheEeyore: It's [[AbusiveParents justified]] [[ButtMonkey though.]]
* EmoTeen: Very much so, though she has good reasons for it.
* EvenNerdsHaveStandards: Neil Goldman is apparently so hideous that not even someone as desperate for attention as Meg would want him.
* ExtremeDoormat: Until she TookALevelInBadass.
* [[TheFriendNobodyLikes The Family Member Nobody Likes]]: Shes treated like this, depending on the episode.
* FatGirl: [[ButtMonkey Unfortunately]].
* HadToComeToPrisonToBeACrook: In the episode "Dial Meg for Murder."
* HeroicSacrifice: Of a non-lethal variety. She decides to take the abuse her family dishes out because without it, they would be at each other's throats nonstop (save for Brian).
* HollywoodDateless
* HollywoodPersonalityDisorders: Borderline Personality Disorder
* IJustWantToBeSpecial
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Depending on the episode. Some episodes does show she has friends.
* InformedDeformity: Meg is seen as being absolutely hideous by every character, save for her AbhorrentAdmirer.
* [[KavorkaMan Kavorka Woman]]: Zigzagged. Although her supposed ugliness drives most guys away, she is seen having many attractive boyfriends depending on the episode.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Her desire for parental love is what drove her into a rampage in "Dial Meg For Murder".
* {{Meganekko}}: She is seen as this by her fans.
* NeverBareheaded
* NiceGirl: Yandere tendencies aside, she is the only Griffin who hasn't been [[{{Flanderization}} flanderized]] into a jerk.
* NiceHat
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Dished one to Peter and the popular kids at her high school in the episode "Dial Meg For Murder."
* [[NoRespectGuy No Respect Girl]]: She is this or the ButtMonkey {{Yandere}} emo, DependingOnTheWriter.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Meg sometimes makes fun out of other Griffin members when the situation calls for it e.g. Chris being made fun for Lois being in a porno by other schoolkids and Meg joins in. She also salvaged upon a brief moment Brian was "the New Meg". Although it could be her trying to fit into a crowd.
** Granted, since Chris does the same thing when it comes to the verbal abuse that Peter and Lois dish out to her (ex. Seahorse Seashell Party).
* PhraseCatcher: "Shut up, Meg."
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: The pink to Chris' blue.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: She's able to [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp]] people much bigger than her.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Meg unleashes a HUGE one on Chris, Lois, and Peter during a hurricane. This is the hurricane three-parter when TheClevelandShow, FamilyGuy, and WesternAnimation/AmericanDad aired back-to-back (the episode name is ''Seashell Seahorse Party''). Compared to Cleveland Junior calling out the rest of the Tubbs on ignoring the National Weather Service, and Francine calling out Stan on how he made things infinitely worse with his idiotic actions that nearly killed the family (and yes, everyone in that episode nearly died), Meg has done the longest series of pointing out the hardest flaws out of three characters.
** She also gives a small one to Connie after she asks Meg for help to get back at Chris for dumping her. Meg points out all the horrible things Connie did to her growing up in school (Meg cut herself each time to ease the pain) and promptly tells Connie to go fuck herself for even thinking about asking for help.
*** She changes her mind when Chris throws a javelin at her
* SeriousBusiness: She threatens to [[DrivenToSuicide kill herself]] for things like: not having a date for the dance or her kiss with Neil getting exposed on national TV.
* SlidingScaleOfBeauty: Meg, whose onscreen likeness is likely anywhere from Just Average to at worst Normal Ugly, is depicted as anywhere from SuperUgly to [[EldritchAbomination so ugly that merely being with her is fate worse than death and going to Hell]]. Presumably, her extreme homeliness is a major reason why Peter and Lois abuse her, and often leads to her often desperate attempts to fit in at school. Not to say Meg hasn't tried to upgrade her physical appearance -- in "Don't Make Me Over," she gets a makeover where she becomes (briefly) a World Class beauty. In Season 9's "Road to the Multiverse," Meg is very attractive - though she is still "one of the ugly ones" as everyone is gorgeous in this universe.
* StepfordSmiler: Type A.
* StrawLoser: Originally part of her ButtMonkey status, though eventually the rest of the family hit such a low point that it began to get subverted, with Meg depicted as the most lucid and redeemable of a family of sociopathic deadbeats.
* TemporarilyAVillain: In "Dial Meg For Murder". [[TheUnfavorite It]] [[ButtMonkey is]] [[AbusiveParents justified]] [[TheWoobie though.]]
* ThisLoserIsYou
* TookALevelInBadass: She seems tougher ever since her post-prison psychotic episode.
* TookALevelInKindness: Par occasional Yandere traits, Meg has far less bratty or self centered traits than in earlier seasons.
* {{Tsundere}}: She showed some tendencies of this towards Neil Goldman early on, namely in the episode "The Kiss Seen Around the World".
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: This is usually averted, but it's played straight when Meg gets a makeover in the episode "Don't Make Me Over." Too bad it's only temporarily.
* TheUnfavorite: Part of the ButtMonkey thing above; Peter and Lois even apparently agreed that if they could only save two of their kids in a crisis, Meg is the one who gets screwed over.
** When Lois has to save Joe from falling to his death:
--->'''Joe:''' Pretend I'm your child, Lois!
--->(Lois starts losing her grip.)
--->'''Joe:''' NOT MEG! NOT MEG!
--->(Lois slowly pulls him up to safety.)
** It's implied once that the family's abuse towards Meg Griffin is really the only thing that kept the family together. See TheReasonYouSuckSpeech above for more details.
* WeightWoe: BIG TIME.
* [[WellDoneSonGuy Well Done Daughter Girl]]
* WolverineClaws: During the events of ''Super Griffins''. Actually, her fingernails only grow a few inches.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: In the episode "Dial Meg For Murder," when she returns from prison and gets revenge on everybody who bullied her by dishing two [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown No Holds Barred Beatdowns]] to Peter and the popular kids at her school (by filling a bag with unopened soda cans and hitting them with it). Brian snaps her out of it by showing her an issue of Teen People Magazine and [[Heartwarming/FamilyGuy describing her as "Far sweeter and kinder than the average teenage girl."]]
* {{Yandere}}: Shows instances of this.

[[folder: Christopher Cross "Chris" Griffin]]
[[quoteright:220:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/220px-Chris_Griffin_2564.png]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

A lax and lazy teen that's childish for his age. Voiced by SethGreen.

* {{Acrofatic}}
* ADateWithRosiePalms: It is implied Chris frequently masturbates and he even goes as far as openly talking about it in conversations that just doesn't need it. In the "Road to the Multiverse" episode, the introduction of dog Chris shows him licking himself under the table.
** His frequent masturbation is taken UpToEleven in the "German Guy" episode where it is shown that Chris masturbates so much that his entire blanket became hard as a rock and then shattered to pieces when Lois drops it on the floor. Lois also comments that, due to his masturbation habits, she washes Chris's clothes so often that the ''washing machine'' has somehow gotten pregnant.
** During an episode where Peter drinks Red Bull, he becomes so hyperactive he sets fire to a cow when milking it. Cut to Chris, who'd previously been offered some, running in the background with his crotch on fire.
** Also a case of CharacterizationMarchesOn, in an early episode, Francis accuses him of masturbating in the bathroom and warns him against it severely. Chris was genuinely just going to the bathroom and naively believes it is sinful to "do a Number Two".
* {{Adorkable}}: In early seasons, mostly.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling
* AuthorAvatar: Occasionally acts as rather blatant avatar for voice actor SethGreen. Each of the [[FamilyGuyPresentsLaughItUpFuzzball Star Wars parodies]] ends with him and Peter [[OutOfCharacterMoment breaking character]] to debate over their [=VA=]s' shows.
* BiggusDickus: In one episode, Peter felt like less of a man when he found out Chris was more endowed than he was.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Comes off as the more level headed or kind family member, but he can be just as bad as the parents when it comes to Meg.
* BookDumb
* BrickJoke: Him being big even at his birth. At first a cutaway gag, it turns out he was so large he "dragged half of Lois out with him". Lois required extensive reconstructive surgery and has been told it'll be lucky if she lives past 50.
** Interestingly, that is the second time its been implied Lois will die aged 50- the first being Stewie saying that he left a timebomb in her uterus (his "first act of violence") and then saying "Happy 50th birthday, Lois". Although, its been shown in TimeTravel episodes that she does indeed live long past 50.
* CloudCuckooLander
* CaughtWithYourPantsDown
* DeadpanSnarker: Occasionally and surprisingly.
* DisproportionateRetribution: When he gained pyrokinesis during ''Super Griffins'', he sets a kid on fire ''[[MyNameIsNotDurwood for calling him by a mocking nickname]]''.
-->'''Chris:''' You remember that time you called me "Chris Gristle"?
-->'''Hector:''' I think so.
-->'''Chris:''' Well burn for it!
* TheDitz
** GeniusDitz: He's apparently very good at drawing.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: his original design has him be barefoot.
* DumbassTeenageSon
* DumbBlonde
* EverybodyHatesMathematics
* FatIdiot: Like his father, though he doesn't usually cross into PsychopathicManchild or FatBastard as frequently as his father does and usually comes across as childlike at certain points.
* {{Flanderization}}: Chris's slowness gradually became his defining factor, as did the Evil Monkey and Herbert's obsession with him.
* TheGenericGuy: other than being an idiot, doesn't have too much of a personality or outstanding quirk, like the rest of his family (yes, even Meg outstands more than him).
* {{Jerkass}}: He's starting to become this lately due to Flanderization, with his behavior towards Meg.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold / NiceGuy: [[DependingOnTheWriter Sometimes.]]
** JerkJock: Became one temporarily in "Stew-Roids."
* KiddieKid: Chris was like this oh-so-much before the show's initial cancellation. Later seasons slowly faded this characteristic out.
* NeverBareheaded
* NiceHat
* OutOfFocus: He has became the least seen character of the Griffin family.
** To the point where, for a time, Joe seriously thought his name was "Caleb".
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: The blue to Meg's pink.
* PlayingWithFire: During the events of ''Super Griffins''.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan The Sensitive Guy to Peter's Manly Man.
* SimpletonVoice
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks like a younger Peter.
* WellDoneSonGuy: In early episodes.

[[folder: Stewart Gilligan "Stewie" Griffin]]
[[quoteright:220:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/220px-Stewie_Griffin_1473.png]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

A perpetual one year old with a lust for world domination. Hates Brian (the hatred wavers from episode to episode) and really wants to kill Lois. Voiced by SethMacFarlane.

* {{Adorkable}}: Any time he acts like a normal baby.
* AffablyEvil
* AntiHero: Was originally a VillainProtagonist, but became increasingly nicer as the series progressed, and probably the most sympathetic and least jerk-ish member of the Griffins family.
* AntiVillain: Type I. He can do whatever he pleases, pleases long as have a clear goal. In addition, he is opposed to wanting to kill his friend Brian.
* AttentionWhore
* [[spoiler:AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: In the episode when Brian plans to save Peter by giving up his kidneys that will result in Brian's death, after Stewie kidnaps him to keep him alive, he becomes heartbroken while stating "I don't want to lose anybody", fearing that he doesn't want to lose Lois, despite him stating in earlier episodes that he wants to kill her. He also seems to genuinely care about his older siblings in an episode shown from his point of view. He is concerned when Meg is showing suicidal tendencies, and orders the local pedophile to stay away from his brother.]]
* AxCrazy: Mainly prior to the Revival, but it's still there.
* BabyLanguage: Subject to a large amount of NegativeContinuity, but some ground rules have been made:
** Lois, Peter and Meg can't understand what he says.
*** WordOfGod states that Peter and Lois can understand what Stewie says just fine, but they choose to ignore him. Lampshaded by Stewie in the episode "Dial Meg For Murder" where the whole family pins Stewie as the one who talked smack about Meg, causing him to say "Oh, so ''now'' everyone understands me?"
** Chris can understand him a little.
** Brian and supporting characters always understand him.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassAdorable
** BadassGay
** CulturedBadass
** PopCulturedBadass
* BaldOfEvil
* BarbieDollAnatomy
* BerserkButton: Don't mess with his beloved teddy bear, Rupert, just DON'T.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He may have TookALevelInKindness, but don't let that fool you.
* BigBad: In the earlier seasons.
* [[spoiler: BigDamnVillains]]: For season nine.
* BrainyBaby
* BreakoutCharacter
* CampGay: Sometimes.
* CatchPhrase: "Victory is mine!" was his for a least the first few seasons.
* CharacterDevelopment: Stewie used to be a one dimenionsal character early in the show's life with his shtick being on world domination, killing Lois, and having a love/hate relationship with Brian. As the series went on, Stewie slowly shed his "taking over the world and kill Lois" persona and became more of a general jerkass to everyone while harboring some feelings towards his family, especially Brian, but will try to not admit it. If anyone puts a member of his family in danger, Stewie will go all out to kill the would be attackers.
** Stewie's former plans for world domination is revisited when he meets Penelope, a girl who is a female version of him if he were still bent on taking over the world. Stewie likes this but then realizes that it just doesn't suit him anymore and he can't get back into his old routines.
* TheChessmaster
* ChildProdigy: He can build time machines and a multi-verse transporter and yet he is only one year old.
* CreepyChild
* DeadpanSnarker: Not as noticeably so as Brian, but he has his moments.
* DepravedBisexual
* DiabolicalMastermind: Seasons 1-6.
* DisguisedInDrag: Stewie disguises himself as a girl in "Go, Stewie, Go!".
* EnfanteTerrible: In seasons 1-6.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: '''Averted'''.
** He does seem to have a good relationship with Chris, though.
* EvilGenius: More so in early seasons.
* ExtremeOmnisexual: What with Stewie's sexual advances on Brian the family male dog; daydreaming of a buffed up Rupert (his teddy bear); and a scene where he was hinted to have slept with a doll.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: Despite his obvious hatred for Brian in earlier seasons, seems to have gained a sympathetic outlook for the latter as he has become more the universe's ButtMonkey.
* FutureLoser: In Main/TheMovie
* GadgeteerGenius: He converts many of his toys into diabolical inventions.
* HeelFaceTurn: Sort of, since he became less of a VillainProtagonist as the series progressed.
** HeelFaceRevolvingDoor
* IncompatibleOrientation: Occasionally demonstrates he may have a crush on Brian.
* InsufferableGenius: At times.
* {{Jerkass}}: Less and less after each season, however.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Currently.
* KarmaHoudini: He might have gotten nicer, but he is and always has been the member of the cast most likely to commit murder and other horrifying deeds, an early example being locking up infants who annoyed him in a secret sandbox prison (he is never seen letting them out- yep, those babies probably starved to death). He has tortured Brian for money, constructed numerous doomsday devices, repeatedly tried to kill his mother, and casually murdered dozens of people on-screen. He has framed people for theft and murder and other crimes, at least once just ForTheEvulz; has forced people to fight to the death... and he has gotten away with it all. Most or all of it is never referenced again.
** Actually subverted as after he beat the living crap out of Brian for losing a bet to him, Stewie got his comeuppance in two ways, one Brian pushed him into a British bus in the same episode and second Brian remembers that incident so he allows Stewie to drink from the cup Peter spits tobacco into and Peter accidentally spits in Stewie's mouth, thinking he's the spit cup.
* LackOfEmpathy: In the early seasons.
** He gets better in later seasons.
* LargeHam
* MadeOfIron: He can take a lot of punishment for a one year old.
* MadScientist: Stewie invented several futuristic machines, such as a time machine, a [[Franchise/StarTrek transporter]] or a device that allows him to travel between parallel universes.
* ManipulativeBastard
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Stewie can brutalize adults 20 times his size.
* [[spoiler:MyOwnGrandpa: When his ancestor was killed, he was forced to take his spot.]]
* NeverMyFault: When Brian lost out on Carolyn because of Stewie's bad advice, Stewie claimed it was Brian's fault for not accepting responsibility.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: He dishes this out regularly. He also dished one to Brian for failing to give him money that he won in a bet.
* OedipusComplex: Inverted. He wants to kill Lois, and has had some friendlier moments with Peter, including the whole of ''The Courtship of Stewie's Father''.
* PetTheDog: Subverted in the season 9 premiere. [[spoiler: He saves Lois from getting killed by Diane, only because [[TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou he wants to be the one to kill her]].]]
** Played straight at times especially with Brian.
** Played straight again [[spoiler:when he saves Chris from being strangled to death by Charles Yamamoto.]].
* PingPongNaivete
* PintsizedPowerhouse
* PsychicPowers: During the events of ''Super Griffins''.
* TheSmartGuy
* TheSociopath: In the early seasons and DependingOnTheWriter. Brian once called him a "freakin psychopath" because he was brutally and savagely assaulting him when Brian owed him money. This was ''before'' he shot Brian on both legs and ''set him on fire'' for still not paying him.
* SmartPeopleSpeakTheQueensEnglish: Possibly. There's some controversy over whether his accent is Received Pronunciation or Boston Brahmin.
* [[spoiler:StableTimeLoop: Due to an accident with time travel, Stewie caused the Big Bang.]]
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Invoked when he snipes [[spoiler: Diane]], who's about to kill Lois.
--> '''Stewie''': If anyone is going to take that bitch down, its gonna be ''me!''
* TokenEvilTeammate: {{Exaggerated}} at first, then {{Inverted}} as the series progressed. An exagerrative example in early seasons, being a cartoonishly villainous mastermind amidst a whimsical sitcom family. As his personality softened and his family became more sociopathic however, it's almost become [[TokenGoodTeammate completely reversed]].
* TookALevelInKindness: In comparison to his role as TokenEvilTeammate in early seasons, some consider him the most likeable member of the family after they all TookALevelInJerkass.
* UnexplainedAccent
* TheUnfettered
* VillainProtagonist: In early seasons. However, it still shows up from time to time.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Brian.
* VolumetricMouth: In "Ready, Willing, and Disabled", as a parody of ''ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}}''.
* WickedCultured
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Big time.
-->'''See-n-say:''' The cow goes, SHAZOO!
-->'''Stewie:''' ...it most certainly does not.
* {{Yandere}}: The main reason why he can't keep a potential relationship together, he either scares them away, or in the case of Olivia, murders them.

[[folder: Brian Griffin]]
[[quoteright:220:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/220px-Brian_Griffin_2606.png]]
-->Debut: ''"Death Has a Shadow"''

Talking dog. A cynical, world weary DeadpanSnarker and a foil for Stewie and Peter. Voiced by SethMacFarlane using his natural speaking voice.

* AesopAmnesia: Season 2's "Brian in Love" resolves his feelings for Lois with their deciding to stay friends in a fashion that one reviewer called "a perfectly believable and somewhat heartfelt earnest manner". Compare this to Season 6's "Play It Again, Brian", where he tries to force himself on Lois and, when confronted by a rightfully angry Peter, defends his actions and says Peter doesn't deserve her.
* AuthorAvatar: SethMacFarlane himself admitted that Brian reflects most of his political views. This was extremely prominent in season 7.
* BarefootCartoonAnimal: When Brian wears clothes, his outfits typically don't include shoes.
* ButtMonkey: Nowhere near as big as Meg but things never seem to turn out right for Brian, especially later in the show.
** TheWoobie[=/=]SympatheticSue: it seems that, despite all the crap he gets later in the show, like being beaten ''five times'' to death, by Stewie(twice), Peter, Chris, and Quagmire, in that order, Quagmire's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, being humiliated as a writer ''twice'' and all his relationships failed spectacularly, the writers may be trying to redeem from his [[CreatorsPet current]] [[{{Jerkass}} status]] by making people to feel sorry for him (In "Brian & Stewie", he showed to have suicidal thoughts). However, due to the huge {{Hatedom}} formed around Brian in these past years, many people find Brian's despair and suffering to be hilarious and satisfying.
*** Throughout all 8 seasons, he's shown to have self-destructive tendencies (alcohol, cocaine, suicide), but as of the beginning of season 9, his character seems to be one of an: [[DrowningMySorrows alcoholic]], self-loathing, self-recognized hypocrite, who puts forth the [[BeneathTheMask facade of a sophisticated academic while clinging desperately to the idea that he is a writer to hide how desperately sad and dead-ended his life is]], depending on the validation of other people to create any sense of self-worth.
* TheChewToy: Yes, plenty of fans enjoy Brian's ButtMonkey status thanks to the heat he gained in the past seasons.
* CivilizedAnimal
* CommanderContrarian: Lois calls him out on this behaviour.
* CulturedBadass
* DeadpanSnarker: Seth [=MacFarlane=] even describes Brian's humor to be as dry as the martinis he drinks.
* DependingOnTheWriter: While all of the characters' personalities are based on RuleOfFunny, Brian is perhaps the most erratic in later seasons, switching between his original slightly flawed OnlySaneMan role in one episode and a completely odious self absorbed weasel in the other.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Tries and fails numerous times to get back with Jillian.
* EasyEvangelism
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Implied with Stewie.
* FanNickname: Brian is referred among his haters as "The Liberal Douche"
* FlatEarthAtheist: Despite the appearances of God and Jesus on earth in the show, Brian is a staunch atheist.
** NayTheist: Brian ''hates God'', so he prefers CessationOfExistence.
** Interestingly, atheism wasn't part of Brian's characterization until the [[{{Uncancelled}} uncancellation]]. In "If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin'", Brian is the first to realize that the misfortunes in the household are recreations of the Ten Plagues of Egypt (going so far as to say "God... is... pissed!"). And in "The Thin Blue Line" he credits God with giving him such a good sense of smell--while this could be rationalized as workplace joking-around, the point should be made that post-uncancellation Brian would mildly snap at even light-hearted off-hand comments about God.
* FreudianExcuse: Given that he didn't start dating hot morons until after the show was revived, his new dating habits could be attributed to Pearl's death, as he would rather enjoy meaningless sex with idiotic partners rather than forge a genuine connection and go through that same pain again. Ironically, he'd meet two other women whom he'd form a connection with, Jillian and Rita, but he lost both of them because A: he didn't want to make a commitment with Jillian, and B: he cheated on Rita and tried to poorly rationalize it as a good thing.
** He was seperated from his mother, which is why he is depressed.
* FunnyAnimal
* FurryConfusion
** FurryReminder
*** FurryDenial: Brian eventually went from a dog with human traits to a human in a dog disguise.
* InsufferableGenius
* IntellectualAnimal
* InterspeciesRomance: Brian has several of these with humans.
* IronButtMonkey: A particularly brutal one later in the show, seems to fall victim to [[FamilyUnfriendlyViolence prolonged graphic]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beatings]] a frequent episode.
* {{Irony}}: SethMacFarlane uses his natural speaking voice for a character that's not human (even though Brian hardly, if ever, acts like a dog. In the rare times he does, it's wooden and unconvincing -- i.e., when he barks).
* {{Jerkass}}: Later in the show.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He still has more moments of clarity than most of the other Griffins.
* KavorkaMan: He has dated a fair number of human women considering he's a dog.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Especially in later seasons.
-->'''Quagmire''': "You pretend you're some profound intellectual but you're not"
* MommyIssues: Possibly explains his weakness for women.
* MotiveDecay: In early seasons Brian wants to date a woman of depth and substance, having gotten tired of [[BrainlessBeauty Brainless Beauties]] who have no idea what he's talking about when he wants to have meaningful conversations. Later on, the Griffins (Lois especially) make fun of him for dating nothing but said Brainless Beauties and Quagmire even calls him out on this in his TheReasonYouSuckSpeech from "Jerome Is The New Black" (with Quagmire pointing out his hypocrisy by stating, "Yeah, I date women for their bodies, but at least I'm honest about it...") Not to say that he still end up in dates with women of depth that end badly, most notably Carolyn and Ida, the former who Cleveland snagged, and the latter who turned out to be Quagmire's dad [[{{Transsexual}} post-sex change]].
* MyInstinctsAreShowing: Brian acts like a human for most of the time, but sometimes he shows dog traits; for example, he will chase balls, is attracted to the sound of dog food in a bag, and is terrified of the vacuum cleaner.
* {{Narcissist}}
* NeverMyFault: When it comes to his relationships. Brian always tries to act intelligent and suave to get women to have sex with him, and when they break up with him, he always blames them, but never thinks about what ''he'' did. Plus, he blamed Stewie for ''everything'' in "Brian Writes A Bestseller."
* NonHumanSidekick
* OffTheWagon (but occasionally ends up back on it)
* OnlySaneMan: Used to be this.
* OpinionFlipflop: His most common method of picking up women in later seasons. In "Peter's Got Woods" he meets a beautiful black woman and tries to curry her favor by getting Chris' school renamed for Martin Luther King Jr. In another episode, when a woman says magicians turn her on, he ''immediately'' blurts out "I'm a magician!"
* ParentalSubstitute: Towards Stewie, and to a lesser extent, Meg and Chris.
* PerpetualFrowner: In early episodes, Brian was rather stoic and humorless, rarely changing demeanor outside to give advise to Peter or the odd dry quip. As he developed in later episodes he becomes more emotional.
* ThePornomancer: Brian tries to be romantic, but invariably most of his encounters are quickies and one-night stands with women he barely knows, often brainless beauties (i.e. Jillian and the nameless blonde who mispronounced "escargot" and "Chablis" in "Brian Wallows, Peter Swallows"), as pointed out by Quagmire in his rant against Brian (with Quagmire pointing out that, yes, he goes after airheaded women too, but he doesn't put up a pseudo-intellectual front to get in their pants the way Brian does).
** Though, as seen in some Season 10 and 11 episodes, it seems that he finally gave up on purchasing long time, meaningful relationships, and is merely interested in having sex with as many women as possible. Ironically, making him similar to Quagmire.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Connie at the prom after she insults Meg.
* SmallNameBigEgo
* SnarkyNonHumanSidekick
* TheStoolPigeon: He acted like the Concerned Corey ''twice'' when the situation involved Meg.
* StraightMan: Brian originally existed simply as a foil to Peter's antics.
* StrawHypocrite: From Season Eight onwards, Brian is depicted as very fickle and shallow about his left wing views, even called out for basing his opinions solely on being a "contrarian" and the [[AttentionWhore center of attention]].
* SuperSpeed: During the events of ''Super Griffins''.
* TalkingAnimal
* TeamPet
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Jack Daniels liquor.
** As well as Martinis.
* UngratefulBastard: Quagmire accuses Brian of this in his famous rant, citing the fact that Brian is trying to steal Lois away from Peter, the man who saved his life and gave him a good home.
** The silly thing is this got resolved long before this episode came about, so Quagmire really just bringing up old information. ''[[FridgeLogic Exactly how did he know about that anyway?]]''
** Actually Brian had indicated lingering feelings for Lois on several occasions afterwards.
* VitriolicBestBuds: The idea early on obviously was that he was Peter's best friend, but by season 9 the only long-term positive interaction he has is with Stewie, and it's their friendship that results in ''The Road to..." episodes. Although its not to the same extent, he often shows a lot of kindness towards Meg too.
* WelcomeToHell: [[spoiler: When some Halloween pranksters dye his fur magenta, he gains the sympathy of the Pink Panther.]]
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: This was more of an issue in earlier seasons, but now Brian is almost universally [[FurryDenial silently treated like a human]] by family and strangers alike, with occasional amusing {{Furry Reminder}}s.
