* DisproportionateRetribution: Sort of. To avenge the death of his mother, he wishes to bring about the destruction of the entire Britannian royal line -- with the notable exceptions of his beloved sister Nunnally, Euphemia and himself. However, he has plenty of legitimate gripes against the Empire which do not involve those two things, mainly the Social Darwinism that drives the country to conquer the entire world and oppress everyone who isn't Britannian, and the aforementioned members of the royal family are the only ones known to oppose said policies. It makes even more sense if you consider the events of the first episode. Lelouch unwittingly falls into a rebel plot to steal what appears to be poison gas, but is in fact a captive of the Britannian Empire. Initially, he's doing everything he can to extricate himself from the plot, and finally manages to find a window of opportunity when Suzaku recognizes him. However, Suzaku's Commanding Officer is ruthless to the point of being StupidEvil, and he ''attempts to murder his own soldier'' for daring to trust the hapless Lelouch. On top of that, Prince Clovis has decided to initiate a KillEmAll purge in order to cover up the truth the rebels were about to uncover. While Lelouch is trying to escape with girl that the rebels were carrying, the very same StupidEvil general corners him, kills the girl ([[spoiler:for all of about 10 seconds]]), and is moments away from murdering Lelouch when she gives him his Geass ability. ''Anybody'' would lose their patience with the Britannian empire after going through all that shit.

The fallen prince of Britannia, exiled from the empire along with his blind and crippled little sister to Area 11, which is what Japan is referred to in this series. He ''despises'' Britannia and its [[SocialDarwinist survival of the strongest]] mentality, and seeks to tear it all down to make a gentler world for his sister. One fateful day, he gets the power to do exactly that, and crosses paths with the mysterious witch C.C. who grants him the power of Geass. Lelouch's Geass allows him to compel anyone to obey of his commands, although ItOnlyWorksOnce.

The central character of ''Anime/CodeGeass'', Lelouch [[MeaningfulName Lamperouge]] is a Magnificent Chessmaster who was given the power of a MagicalEye called a Geass that allows him to [[CompellingVoice compel anyone to obey him to do anything he demands]] -- although ItOnlyWorksOnce on any given person. None of his friends (save one) are aware of the fact that he is actually a {{fallen prince|ss}} of [[TheEmpire the Holy Britannian Empire]]. He plans to rebel against his [[EvilOverlord estranged father]], the SocialDarwinist [[TheEmperor Emperor]] [[MeaningfulName Charles]] zi [[TheEmpire Britannia]], who, he thinks, was unforgivably apathetic about his mother's death -- and may even have had a hand in it. Worse, Lelouch was sent to Japan with his blind and crippled sister as bargaining chips, only for said nation to be invaded with them still there. Lelouch [[YouKilledMyFather demands vengeance]], and [[DisproportionateRetribution he'll settle for nothing less than the complete destruction of the Britannian royal line]].

Well, not the ''entire'' Britannian royal line: Lelouch wants [[BigBrotherInstinct to protect his paralyzed and blind little sister Nunnally]] -- and not just to protect her, but to ''make a better world'' for her. [[TheDeterminator He'll do just about anything]] to accomplish his goals, and he doesn't mind if he has to be labeled "[[PayEvilUntoEvil evil]]" in the process. Especially if he gets to make being evil look ''damn'' good as he [[JumpedAtTheCall announces his new anti-Britannian movement.]]

As the series evolves, Lelouch finds a worthy opponent, his old friend [[ForgottenFriendNewFoe Suzaku Kururugi]], who eventually becomes the biggest obstacle to his plans.

He also finds an [[BackFromTheDead unexpected]] ally, a beautiful and MysteriousWaif who usually goes by the "name" C.C. She isn't what she seems to be. But then, neither is Lelouch.

* MightyGlacier: Lelouch pilots the Gawain alongside C.C. near the end of the first season, a Knightmare Frame that's much larger than usual, requiring two pilots, which makes it a slow but very powerful mech.

* VillainProtagonist: fits the bill in R1 since despite a sympathetic backstory, he's fighting for selfish reasons rather than noble ones, worst he uses lies,deceit,manipulation, and murder to get what he wants. [[spoiler: this all for one mentality results in his defeat and capture at the end of season one.]]

** In a rather iconic scene from Episode 23 in the first season, he does this as Toyko collapses in on itself.

* ItOnlyWorksOnce: His Geass can only give a specific person one command and they will be immune to it [[spoiler: unless someone with a geass canceller removes the original command.]]

* LoopholeAbuse: Twice. First, in Turn 8 of R2, when given an order of exile from Japan as Zero, he averts a crisis by having the rest of the Black Knights, along with 1 million other Japanese natives, dress up as Zero, and joining him in the exile, and freeing them to take their fight against Britannia to the world stage. Towards the end, [[spoiler:he stops the immortal and Geass-immune Charles from activating Ragnarok by Geassing the collective unconsciousness into carrying out its own wish to continue existence, which it carries out by obliterating both Charles and Marianne.]]

* IHaveTheHighGround: In the first season TitleSequence. Actually, he likes the high ground a lot.

** He is very similar to Reinhard von Lohengramm from ''Anime/LegendOfGalacticHeroes'', even down to the sister part.

* NiceHat: Nice enough to have its own fan club.

* AdaptationalJerkass: In ''Manga/CodeGeassNightmareOfNunnally'', what with Lelouch brutally murdering Clovis some time ''after'' Shinjuku (which he had no role in) and even [[spoiler: being behind the JLF taking over the Sakuradite Conference]] though likely [[spoiler:this is influenced by his FusionDance with C.C. in that verse.]]

* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: [[spoiler:Lelouch does this to Kallen and Nunnally during the final arc. And since they figure out the truth later on, they don't even end up hating him for it.]]

* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:Shirley's death marks the beginning of the end of Lelouch's sanity, and is one of the leading causes of the events of the rest of the series, including Zero Requiem.]]

* ShipTease: Has this with Kallen more times than one can count.

* HouseHusband: Has all the trappings of it, being a good cook, can sew, and can definitely keep house, in part thanks to having spent the last eight years caring for his IllGirl sister. This contrasts him with C.C. who is a complete slob who eats pizza every day.

* SoProudOfYou: [[spoiler: In the final, he says this to Nunnally while she's under his Geass, acknowledging how she has grown from the helpless IllGirl she was in the beginning. He only doesn't say it to her face properly because he's currently playing the EvilOverlord for his ThanatosGambit and can't break character.]]

* AdultFear: The idea of his sister Nunnally being in danger or having no one to take care of her if he is in danger of death (especially in episode 1 when he faces a Britannian squad) is enough to make him freak out.

* BigBrotherInstinct: He deeply loves Nunnally and protecting her is his reason for living.

* CharClone: In fact, if you take this perspective, ''Anime/CodeGeass'' literally becomes ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'' with the perspectives skewed, instead of following Amuro (Suzaku), you're following Char. In fact, in one of the scenarios in ''VideoGame/{{Super Robot Wars Z}}2: Saisei-Hen'', has fellow AntiVillain Char Clones [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Milliardo Peacecraft]] and [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Mr. Bushido]] team up with him.

* Itsnotyouitsmyenemies: With Kallen, when he lies to her calling her a pawn in the warehouse before whisVering to her he has to live on, breaking the mask for his (planned) last words.

* MagicalEye: The Geass. It allows him to give direct commands to anyone he makes eye contact with (which they ''must'' obey, even if the command is explicitly suicidal or goes against every moral fiber of their being), but ItOnlyWorksOnce per person.

* AllGirlswantbadboys: They all want him, even C.C. in the alternate timeline. And some boys want him too.

* Belligerentsexualtension: With Kallen, she denies closeness, he teases her, he denies interest, she gets angry, summarizes their whole relationship.

* Momentkiller: Every moment he shares with Kallen in season 2 that servies as bringing them closer always end up being interrupted, be it by a radio call, by someone craving tobasco or by some yandere wannabe little brother. Subverted at the end of the anime where Kallen ends up performing a moment killer during a Lelouch/C.C. scene, ith a giant robot.

* PowerAtAPrice: Code Geass can be consider a cautionary of what happens when just one person is given power over everyone else.especially when the person in question is too young and inexperienced to understand the consequences of the choices he makes. Lulouch tried to change the world for his sister's benefit and eventually for the world using his Geass despite the awful cost.[[spoiler: he is partially successful.]]

* Thepoweroflove: Learns it from Shirley and understands he's been driven by it from the very beginning in a very funny way.

* UnresolvedSexualTension : Kallen and him have it going on for most of the second season with Lelouch teasing her about their relationship and them often ending up in some very intimate position with each other to the point Lelouch almost act on it when he gets depressed and seeks for confort only to receive a slap of chaos from said girl.

* WillTheyWontthey: Taking to ridiculous degree with Kallen when most of their interactions imply some sort of physical/emotional closeness/almost kiss. Finally subverted at episode 22 of R2.

* Shiptease: Has this with Kallen more times than one can count.
