* PromotedToPlayable: The UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch version upgrades her status to playable for a second player.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His name is spelled "Pooh Black" in the Aeon Genesis Translation.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Her name is spelled Chaco in the Aeon Genesis translation, and Chako in the Nicalis translation. The latter is generally accepted as correct, as it is a [[UsefulNotes/NamesInJapanese -ko name]], is present in Pixel's original filenames, and is reused in ''[[ChristmasEpisode Cave Story's Secret Santa]]''.

* MultiEthnicName: English first name, Japanese surname. [[AerithAndBob Both her relatives have Japanese given names]].

* GeniusLoci: Whatever this creature is, it's stated by Misery to be the soul of the Island that the game takes place in. It also does not take too kindly to non-native life forms such as Quote and Curly and tries to kill and/or devour them when they enter its chamber.

* NiceGuy: He ''used'' to be a nice guy. [[CynicismCatalyst He isn't anymore.]]

* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: He was tortured until his massive magic reserves [[SuperpowerMeltdown exploded]] and [[DoomedHometown destroyed the city he loved.]] [[DespairEventHorizon His mind couldn't take the strain.]] Since that moment, he's been a danger to himself and everyone else.

* {{Jerkass}}: She's [[{{Sadist}} too happy]] to personally send multiple characters (including Balrog) to [[DownInTheDumps the Labyrinth]] with the expectation that [[AndIMustScream they will never escape.]] Even worse, early on in the game, the Doctor orders her to capture Sue Sakomoto. She ends up [[MistakenIdentity mistaking Toroko for Sue, and brings ''her'' to the Doctor instead, [[BadBoss earning herself a beating.]] Later on, the Doctor orders her to test the [[PsychoSerum Red Flowers]] on a Mimiga, and Misery breaks into an enthusiastic grin before [[DisproportionateRetribution choosing Toroko as the test subject,]] which [[KillTheCutie effectively kills her.]] Consider for a moment that Misery was there during the last war on the Island, when the Mimiga [[GodzillaThreshold ate the flowers en-masse]] to [[FinalSolution avoid being driven to extinction]], she doesn't need to test the Red Flowers because she knows exactly what they do.

* TheAgeless: He ''cannot'' die naturally, instead needing someone to kill him.

* LethallyStupid: He [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom unwittingly]] brought about the destruction of his own kingdom when he couldn't keep his jealousy of a powerful, benevolent wizard in check and [[TooDumbToLive decided that torturing said wizard to insanity was a good idea]].

* AmbiguousRobots: He is said to be an anthropomorphic bar of soap, however, this is put to question since he has slits on where his arms are, can launch missiles, and, most notably, he has a visible exhaust vent on his rear.
