* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: In his first appearance he loses to Zuko mainly because he underestimated him and was caught off guard, though it helped that Iroh was Zuko's teacher. By the end of the season, a frozen, injured, and likely exhausted Zuko (who's been beaten up twice by Katara, nearly drowned, nearly froze to death, and still recovering from having been blown up) is able to fight and eventually overpower him on skill alone.

** To Azula in almost ''every'' way. Both are the more prominent members of the Fire Nation and are the ones who succeeded in conquering Ba Sing Se. In a way, they are feared in battle by many of their opponents due to their combat skills (Fire ending for Azula, Chi-Blocking for Ty Lee). But while Azula is an AxCrazy Jerkass who is serious most of the time and has NoSocialSkills, Ty Lee is a straight up NiceGirl who is openly cheerful and is able to attract a lot of dudes and befriend her former enemies.

* {{Foil}}: To Suki. Both are relative BadassNormal’s who hold their own without the need for bending, have been flirtatious to Sokka and are members of the [[spoiler:Kyoshi Warriors]]. What differs both of them is that Suki is an OfficialCouple with Sokka, weilds fans as weapons, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors and is assertive and straightforward. Ty Lee on the other hand has a VillainousCrush on Sokka, doesn’t weild a weapon (tho she does have chi-blocking), a [[CoDragons Co-Dragon]] to Azula’s group (which eventually turns into TheLancer for the [[spoiler:Kyoshi Warriors]]), and is naive and silly.

* NiceMeanAndInbetween: Ty Lee is the Nice and cheerful MinionWithAnFInEvil to Azula's mean and Mai's in-between.

* TheCutie: With her bubbly personality, Ty Lee is basically this. It often goes to the point she doesn't seem like a member of [[Terrible trio Azula's group]] at all.

A star student at the school Aang accidentally enrolls in, and On Ji's "boyfriend". He antagonizes Aang, who goes by "Kuzon".

* BarbaricBully: He has no problems using violence (though he won't use his firebending aside from a warning shot) with his bullying if he ''feels'' that the other slighted him or is making moves on On Ji. Unluckily for him, he tries to beat up "Kuzon".

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His first scene involves him lightly pushing "Kuzon" aside, putting his arm around On Ji, and telling her that she shouldn't waste time babysitting the new kid. In response to "Kuzon's" friendly greeting and calling him popular, he smugly asserts his status and condescendingly "brings him up to speed" about him and On Ji...by getting up in "Kuzon's" face and stating that On Ji is ''his'' girlfriend in a non-friendly PunctuationForEmphasis way before parting with an EyeAmWatchingYou gesture.

* HeadsIWinTailsYouLose: Getting into a conflict with Hide won't end well for any student brave enough to stand up to him. Even if Hide were to be beaten in a fight, the person who beat him ''will be the one'' in trouble instead of Hide despite the Fire Nation's education priding itself on MightMakesRight.

* NotWorthKilling: Even if Aang wasn't so kind and forgiving, he's got bigger things to worry about than the bullying of an arrogant student.

* MeaningfulName: His name is Hide and he's TeachersPet [[DirtyCoward who hides behind authority figures whenever he's in a pinch]].
* MuggingAMonster: He attacks "Kuzon", unaware that he's actually Avatar Aang. He's lucky Aang is a pacifist who prefers non-violence.

* PetTheDog: The only "positive" thing he's shown to do is ''not'' beating up "Kuzon" on their first meeting when he caught him talking to On Ji, showing that he's ''at least'' capable of taking "Kuzon's" alleged FishOutOFWater status into consideration. This doesn't make him sympathetic, however, and the fact that Shoji is '''shocked''' about this makes this says it all.

* UnknownRival: It’s way too clear that for all of Hide’s animosity towards "Kuzon", Aang doesn't give a darn about him. For one, Aang is the Avatar himself, so a SmugSnake Firebending rookie like Hide would be nothing more than a complete pushover that is way out of Aang's league compared to far more personal adversaries like Azula and Fire Lord Ozai. If that’s not taking it any further, Aang could honestly care less about Hide’s affection for On Ji since he already is in love with Katara anyways.

* BullyingADragon: He attacks "Kuzon", unaware that he's actually Avatar Aang. He's lucky Aang is a pacifist who prefers non-violence.

* DudeMagnet: In "The Beach", [[PerkyFemaleMinion Ty Lee]] had 5 guys trying to get with her at the same time (seen at the end of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvx6NiccDVA this clip]]), whereas [[TheDragon Princess Azula]] couldn't even land ''one''.

* NiceGirl: Despite being an affiliate for the Fire Nation, she is their nicest member besides Iroh. It helps that she has an openly sweet and bubbly nature. [[BewareTheNiceOnes Just don't get into her bad side, or else you'll temporarily lose your bending]].

* NiceGirl: Despite being an affiliate for the Fire Nation, she is their nicest member besides Iroh and one of the friendliest and most upbeat characters in the series.

* DumbassHasAPoint: In "The Beach", when Azula wonders why many boys avoid her once she tries talking to them, Ty Lee correctly points out that she would do something ''horrible'' to them, considering how manipulative the former can be.

* {{Irony}}: She's open about feeling less unique when it comes to her sisters as she feels like a part of a "matched set". [[spoiler:She joins the Kyoshi Warriors in the GrandFinale, a group who sports matching dresses and makeup]].

* NiceGirl: One of the friendliest and most upbeat characters in the series. While outclassed by Iroh in that regard, she is the nicest Fire Nation member.

* ValleyGirl: Much like how Mai is the Avatar world's version of a {{Goth}}, Ty Lee could be seen as this world's equivalent of a valley girl. She definitely has the outgoing and slightly airheaded mannerisms, and has quite a lot of experience with boys (despite not being all that interested in the ones who are drawn to her in "The Beach").

* NiceGirl: One of the friendliest and most upbeat characters in the series.

* CloudCuckoolander: Weird case of this trope. Ty Lee is far from stupid; but she's REALLY easygoing when not in a fight.

* RetiredMonster: Once he went into retirement, Yon Rha was ultimately reduced to a pathetic shell of his former, monstrous self. That does not change the fact that he is an unrepentant war criminal who worked to purge the Southern Water Tribe of waterbenders and murdered Katara's mother in cold-blood, and he has occasionally committed murder on others who have tried to assassinate him during his retirement.

** {{Pride}}. [[spoiler:He refuses Zuko's aid out of pride when the Ocean Spirit is dragging him away.]]

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl:
** She's the Girly Girl when you pair her up with Azula; she's much more gentle-natured and affectionate than Azula's relentlessly brutal aggressiveness.
* TookALevelInBadass: Ty Lee's chi-blocking subtly gets stronger throughout Season 2. The first time she chi-blocks Katara in "Return to Omashu", Katara remains upright and is merely unable to bend. When she does it to Sokka in "The Chase", she causes parts of his body to fall asleep. In "The Drill", she [[OneManArmy chi-blocks and knocks out the Terra Team]] with a couple blows tops for each. Finally in "The Guru", Ty Lee needs only to lay a single hand on Katara to deliver a OneHitKO.

* BoobsOfSteel: She's endowed[[note]]Keep in mind that Ty-Lee is only 14 years old in the TV series, she still has a few years of puberty left but can already be called "endowed".[[/note]] in the show, and one of the most feared fighters in the show, thanks to her chi-blocking abilities.

** Instead of recruiting earthbenders from colonies into their ranks (the comics reveal that some individual earthbenders ''are'' loyal to the Fire Nation, and some Earthbending citizens are willing to do business with the Fire Nation), the occupying soldiers tend to outlaw earthbending in some settlements, with one even referring to it as "savagry that passes for bending". In "Crossroads of Destiny", Azula's coup proves that had they been open to working with other types of benders, they could have taken Ba Sing Se a long time ago and effectively won the war before the Avatar even returned. This is also an advantage Iroh has over his countrymen; while they dismiss the idea they could learn anything from "water tribe peasants", Iroh studies their techniques and works them into his own style.

* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Played With. The two most evil people in the Fire Nation are both super [[IncrediblyLamePun hot]], whereas for the most likeable, one is average looking, while the other would be handsome if it weren't for his scar (though [[EstrogenBrigade his female fanbase]] may beg to differ).

* PersonalityPowers: Initially, their fire is apparently produced by hate and anger, and firebenders follow accordingly. It later turns out firebending is fueled by passion of any kind, including positivity. Indeed, outside of the distinctly villainous Ozai, Azula and Zhao, the average Fire Nation citizens are actually surprisingly [[IncrediblyLamePun warm]] and friendly once you get to know them. However, lightningbending, derived as it is from waterbending techniques, requires calm and self-control.
