It's also implied that he too has a famous ancestor, since "Klavadak the Mighty", the pioneer of the great northern sewer system, looks very much like the Gromble without any shoes.s

* MultipleChoicePast: As stated in VagueAge, he was originally shown as a child learning from the Shroink in the 1920s, which is how he got his shoess... then he was later shown as having first become a teacher in the 1700s and was mentioned to have partaken in the hunt for the Holey Pail 400 years before the present.

Our main hero, [[MrViceGuy flawed as]] [[AntiHero he is]]. Son of the legendary Slickis, he has a lot to live up to... but his {{Ugly Cute}}ness, nervous disposition and self-confidence issues combined with his tendency to slack off keep working against him. Still, one shouldn't underestimate him based his looks or personal problems; his {{s|izeShifter}}caring [[OneWingedAngel skills]] are nothing to laugh at...

* ArtEvolution: In "The Switching Hour: Part 1", he has noticeable temple arms next to his eyes suggesting that he wears glasses. Later episodes, he doesn't have them.

* ClarkKenting: His Super Monster costume is nothing more than a towel for a cape, and underpants for a mask. It does at least cover his ears, which seem to be viewed as his most distinguishing feature.

* JockDadNerdSon: His father has won a few trophies, and ribbons, and plaques, and more trophies... A recurring theme is Ickis despairing of ever matching the Great Slickis' exploits. It's telling that when the Gromble forces him to become a last minute entry in a wave-riding competition, the same competition that his father NEVER lost, everyone is betting on Ickis... to lose. In a surprising twist, Ickis proves that he could have won that event, but gives up a sure victory to go back and save Krumm.

* OtherMeAnnoysMe: Is conned into creating 5 clones in one episode. The clones fulfill his 5 scares in a day assignment, enabling him to play Sewerball. In a rare moment of glory Ickis wins the game. Too bad for him the clones escape from his dorm and annoy The Gromble, The Snorch, Zimbo, Krumm and Oblina, leaving Ickis highly upset.

* ShipTease: The clone Ickis seems to regret the most is Chickis, the lecherous clone who tries to kiss Oblina, which he claims he will never be able to live down. Bear in mind that Ickis got awfully jealous when Oblina was squishing on the popular Gludge, once confessed that he didn't know what he would do without her, and his version of how they scared an operahouse full of humans had Ickis rescuing the nervous, starry-eyed Oblina who all but swoons over his bravery.

* WellDoneSonGuy: A big part of his character involves his insecurities next to his father, Slickis, who is TheAce and seems to be Ickis's polar opposite. In reality they're NotSoDifferent, and it's worth noting that unlike some examples of this trope, Slickis actually does care about and encourage his son.

* LonelyRichKid: More so when she first arrived at the Academy, but outside of Ickis and Krumm, she doesn't really have any friends, since the other young monsters think of her as snooty, stuck-up and a teacher's pet.

** In the Mexican Spanish dub, she speaks with a notable European accent in her voice, possibly in a attempt to sound her like [[{{Dracula}} another classic monster]].

* AgonyOfTheFeet: In the first iteration of his MultipleChoicePast, the Gromble acquired his trademark high heels as a kid and has kept them ever since... even though he's outgrown the size he insists on wearing. His former teacher, the Shroink, explicitly tells Ickis, Krumm and Oblina that the Gromble is so cranky all the time because his toes are pinched.

* MultipleChoicePast: As stated in VagueAge, he was originally shown as a child learning from the Shroink in the 1920s, which is how he got his shoess... then he was later shown as having first become a teacher in the 1700s, and was mentioned to have partaken in the hunt for the Holey Pail 400 years before the present.

** Teaching in the 1700's is more probable. He embarked on the Quest For The Holy Pail when he was a student... 400 years ago. The Gromble would have to be really 500 years old for some of his comments to even make sense, although it still seems like an exaggeration to say he hasn't seen another monster in centuries.

* BoisterousBruiser: Extremely friendly, cheerful and happy, making yet another stark contrast with his emotional son.

* ScarsAreForever: As an adult his ears are torn in several places.

* EyeScream: He attempted to scare people in pre-Revolutionary America, but dropped one of his eyes as a soldier dropped a box of musket balls. The soldier grabbed Horvak's eye by mistake, loaded it and... well, it was the Shot Heard Round the World.

* OpenMindedParent: He is in favor of his daughter scaring career and stands up to his wife to allow Oblina to return to the Academy.

* LargeHam: He ''knows'' how to make a entrance.
