The SL Class one of Mercedes-Benz's LongRunners of sports cars ever since its introduction in 1954. The designation ''SL'' derives from the phrase, ''Sport-Leicht'', German for ''Sport Light''.

It all began with the W194 300 SL endurance race car that won the UsefulNotes/TwentyFourHoursOfLeMans in 1952, where it prompted a street version of that said car following its success. As a result, in 1954, the iconic 300 SL Gullwing was born. The car was highly notable for its iconic gullwing doors which was way advanced for its time. A year later, the 190 SL roadster was made as an a BoringButPractical version of the 300 SL, presented as a less-powerful but more affordable version of this attractive icon and sold in massive quantities.

In 1963, following the response of the 190 SL's lack of performance, Mercedes-Benz evolves the 190 SL on a newer platform. Under the new W111 chassis, the new W113 SL began production on a massive scale. The new generation replaces its inline-4 engines for a powerful inline-6, which varies depending on the version, such as the 230 SL and 250 SL (148 hp), or the powerful 280 SL (168 hp). It was also the first Mercedes-Benz fitted with radial tires. This became one of the most successful Mercedes-Benz models of that time, selling approximately 50,000 units in the North American market.

The R107 was introduces in 1971, which the SL lineup is only offered in roadster, whereas the coupe would go for the C107 SLC lineup. Using the W114 designation, this generation now uses a powerful M116/M117 V8 engine, while entry levels like the 280 SL remain using an inline-6. By 1988, the SL is officially now a separate model only offered in convertible, but offers either an automated electro-hydraulic roof, fabric convertible roof, a color-matched tonneau cover, or a detachable hardtop. Its engine was offered in various trims such as the inline-6, V6, or V8. This generation would be also the first ever to offer a powerful AMG model, which utilizes either a V8 or V12, which continued in later iterations of the SL.

Mercedes-Benz offered a high-performance variant of the Mercedes SL in 2008, dubbed the SL 65 AMG Black Series, which was powered by a 6.0 M275 V12 [=BiTurbo=] delivering 661 hp worth of power, and it's fitted with a five-speed AMG Speedshift Plus automatic transmission. Its top speed allows it to go past 322 km/h (200 mph) and can acceletate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds.

While the SL-Class was PutOnABus in 2020, the SL-Class made [[TenMinuteRetirement a quick return 2 years later]], now under the Mercedes-AMG brand, serving as the direct replacement for the AMG GT Roadster.

Many would say this would be the ultimate sports car. And it's arguably true.

The [=McLaren F1=] is a British supercar that debuted in 1991. Originally, it was a [[SuperPrototype concept]] made by British designer, Gordon Murray, who convinced Ron Dennis for full support of the project, while Peter Stevens designed the exterior and the interior.

Unique to his car comes unusual designs and technologies, such as having the driver's seat positioned in the centre with two passenger seats behind it. The F1 is powered by a 627 bhp [=V12=] engine and fitted with an ultralight carbon composite chassis, allowing it to be capable of reaching 240.1 mph (386.4 km/h).

While it was the fastest production car in the world until [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter it was surpassed by the Bugatti Veyron]], the [=McLaren F1=] is still the fastest naturally-aspirated sports car ever produced.

There are also a few variants of this car. One of these was the [=McLaren F1 LM=] (LM referring to Le Mans), which only had ''five'' production models, plus a prototype model called the [=XP1 LM=], made. One of the three of the "Holy Trinity" of hybrid hypercars, alongside the Porsche 918 and [=LaFerrari=].

The P1 is [=McLaren's=] first ever plug-in hybrid hypercar and its second of the manufacturer's Ultimate Series, produced from 2015 to 2015. It was originally suppose to succeed the [=McLaren=] F1, until it was later confirmed that the Speedtail served as the F1's successor.

This ultimate uses the same structure as the [=MP4-12C=] such as using carbon-fibre monocoque and its use of a twin-turbocharged [=M838=] V8 engine, boasting 903 horsepower from both the motor and electric engine combined. The P1 utilizes technology derived from [=McLaren's=] own UsefulNotes/FormulaOne cars, such as the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) and Drag Reduction System (DRS) rear wing, making it the first ever road car to ever incorporate it.

In 2015, [=McLaren=] launched their track-only car, the P1 GTR, as a MilestoneCelebration for 20 years since their victory of the 1995 UsefulNotes/TwentyFourHoursOfLeMans. [[TerminallyExclusiveClub Besides, that car is only exclusive to P1 owners only.]]

A small, two-door, four-seat car, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors (first British Leyland and then Rover Group) for over 40 years, from 1959 until 2000, the Mini Cooper is considered an icon of 1960s British popular culture.

The distinctive two-door car's small size hides from the naked eye the fact that it features a space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel drive layout, which allows for 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage, and which has influenced a generation of car makers, who used it in many other "supermini" style car designs such as Honda N360 (1967), Nissan Cherry (1970), and Fiat 127 (1971), and also adapted for larger subcompact designs. Following its release, the Mini was marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, respectively. The Austin Seven would be renamed Austin Mini in 1962, while Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. In 1980, it once again became the Austin Mini, before being shortened to just "Mini" in 1988 (though some models exported to Japan continued to be badgered as "Rover").

BMW acquired the Rover Group in 1994, and while it sold the greater part of it in 2000, retained the rights to build cars using the Mini name since 2000 with a ContinuityReboot of the vehicle range (and retroactively naming the original car as the "Classic Mini" to better distinguish it).

Hailing from America, the Eclipse is Mitsubishi's sports compact coupe produced in four generations from 1989 to 2011. Accorffding to Mitsubishi, the Eclipse name [[MeaningfulName was derived from the unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse of the same name]] that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

The first two generations share a platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. Due to Mitsubishi's partnership with Chrysler, they were known as Diamond-Star Motors. The third generation Eclipse share a platform with the Chrysler Sebring and the Dodge Stratus. In 2005, the 4th-generation Eclipse replaced the Chrysler platform, with the front fascia consistent with Mitsubishi's corporate styling features of the time.

Earlier iterations typically use a 4G inline-4 engine, whereas the high end models starting with the third-gen made use of the 6G V6.

The Eclipse discontinued in 2011, though Mitsubishi revived the Eclipse name in 2017, as a compact crossover called the "Eclipse Cross".

The Lancer Evolution, or as many like to just call it the [[FanNickname Evo]], is Mitsubishi's high-performing rally-based sports sedan introduced in 1992, based on the existing Lancer. Throughout its production time, there have been 10 official versions, with each model designated with a [[AlternativeNumberSystem Roman numeral]], and all of them use 2-litre intercooled turbocharged four-cylinder engines and an all-wheel drive system.

The first generation (Evolution I-III) was first derived from the original Galant VR-4 in a Lancer chassis, sold in both race-ready GSR (Gran Sport Racing) and lightened RS (Rally Sport) trims. Most models are fitted with OZ aftermarket rims.

The second generation (Evolution IV-VI) sees a major redesign in 1996, alongside its new twin-scroll turbocharger and Mitsubishi's new Active Yaw Control as a factory standard. Unique to this is its distinguished tow large fog lights fitted in the front bumper, which would be a standard for the Evo V. Like the previous generation, it comes with many third-party components such as Enkei wheels, seats from Recaro, and Brembo brakes.

In 2001, the third generation (Evolution VII-IX) was made in response to FIA's mandatory homologation rules in the. UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship. Basing from the large Lancer Cedia chassis, this version sees
further uprated refinements to the body, and is fitted with suspension from Bilstein. The Evolution VIII onwards introduces a higher performance trim called the MR (Mitsubishi Racing), and is fitted with BBS alloy rims and a 6-speed gearbox, with numerous special trims introduced exclusively to the UsefulNotes/UnitedKingdom.

The final generation, the Lancer Evolution X was based on its concept and prototype models, featuring a reworked body, a 6-speed dual clutch transmission and the introduction to the S-WAC (Super All Wheel Control). The Evolution ceased production in 2016 as it bids farewell with special Final Edition trim.

Throughout the ten generations, the Lancer Evolution has been widely involved in UsefulNotes/{{Rallying}}, mainly the UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship. The Mazda Cosmo Sport, otherwise known as the [[MarketBasedTitle 110S]] in the United States is a Japanese sports car manufactured from 1967 to 1972. It was the "halo" car of the brand and the TropeCodifier behind Mazda's trademark rotary Wankel engine. The name ''"cosmo''"'' refers to the trend of UsefulNotes/TheSpaceRace since Mazda wanted to showcase their advanced technology.

A prototype of the Cosmo Sport was presented at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show with 80 pre-production Cosmos produced. 20 of those pre-production models went to Mazda test department with the rest headed for dealership testing between 1965 and 1966. Full production followed up in May 1967 lasting through 1972 with a total of 1,176 Cosmos hand-built in the timeframe, with only six of the Series II models were imported into the United States.

Mazda would race the Cosmo in 1968 which saw it participate in the 84-hour Marathon de la Route at Nürburgring in Germany. With two Cosmos entered, one of them would finish in fourth overall with the other being retired from the event due to axle damage in the 82nd hour. That would be the only race event the model would participate in.

The Series I Cosmo ([=L10A=]) is fitted with a 0810 two-rotor engine with 982 cc of displacement and produces approximately 110 horsepower, where as the Series II Cosmo ([=L10B=]) has a more-powerful 128 hp 0813 engine. The Cosmo was only offered in one color which would be its signature Swan White finish.

The iconic Japanese sports that perhaps the majority best knows so much of.

Unlike many sports cars which use inline, flat or V-engines, the RX-7 instead uses Mazda's trademark Wankel rotary engine, developed by Felix Wankel in TheFifties. Though it's not the first ever to do so since it was also used in models before the RX-7 was ever produced such as the Cosmo Sport and the Grand Familia.

From 1978 up to its end in 2002, the RX-7 came across three generations. Its first generation ([=SA22C=]) succeeded the Savanna RX-3, transitioning the Savanna name to a lightweight compact sports car, fitted with its signature engine in its front axle to help balance weight distribution. The second-generation (FC) comes with a restyled body design and took inspirations from the Nissan [=300ZX=] and the Porsche 928. There was also a limited convertible variant produced exclusively to the UsefulNotes/UnitedStates.

Last, the third-generation (FD) was introduced in 1992, and is considered to be one of the most recognisably of the series. While the RX-7 discontinued in the US in 1995, the RX-7 continues production exclusively to Japan until 2002, with its powerful limited farewell model, the RX-7 Spirit R Type A, made exclusively to the country. The RX-7 was then succeeded by the RX-8 in 2003.

The RX-7's popularity became highly-known to the tuner community and in various motorsports such as the IMSA GTP, UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship and Super GT for the [=GT300=] class. The Mazda RX-8 sports car was produced from 2002 to 2011 as the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors of the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine.

Unique to this 4-doored coupe design is its two "freestyle" rear suicide doors position near the backseats. Unlike the RX-7, the RX-8 uses a naturally aspirated 1.3 L RENESIS twin-rotor engine, capable of producing 238 horsepower, and usually offered with a four, five or six-speed manual transmission (later models use a 6-speed automatic paddle-shift instead).

The mid-cycle refresh in 2008 sees a major overhaul to the body, and with added structural reinforcements, with the now named RX-8 R3, first introduced in Japan. The SL Class one of Mercedes-Benz's LongRunners of sports cars ever since its introduction in 1954. The designation ''SL'' derives from the phrase, ''Sport-Leicht'', German for ''Sport Light''.

It all began with the W194 300 SL endurance race car that won the UsefulNotes/TwentyFourHoursOfLeMans in 1952, where it prompted a street version of that said car following its success. As a result, in 1954, the iconic 300 SL Gullwing was born. The car was highly notable for its iconic gullwing doors which was way advanced for its time. A year later, the 190 SL roadster was made as an a BoringButPractical version of the 300 SL, presented as a less-powerful but more affordable version of this attractive icon and sold in massive quantities.

In 1963, following the response of the 190 SL's lack of performance, Mercedes-Benz evolves the 190 SL on a newer platform. Under the new W111 chassis, the new W113 SL began production on a massive scale. The new generation replaces its inline-4 engines for a powerful inline-6, which varies depending on the version, such as the 230 SL and 250 SL (148 hp), or the powerful 280 SL (168 hp). It was also the first Mercedes-Benz fitted with radial tires. This became one of the most successful Mercedes-Benz models of that time, selling approximately 50,000 units in the North American market.

The R107 was introduces in 1971, which the SL lineup is only offered in roadster, whereas the coupe would go for the C107 SLC lineup. Using the W114 designation, this generation now uses a powerful M116/M117 V8 engine, while entry levels like the 280 SL remain using an inline-6. By 1988, the SL is officially now a separate model only offered in convertible, but offers either an automated electro-hydraulic roof, fabric convertible roof, a color-matched tonneau cover, or a detachable hardtop. Its engine was offered in various trims such as the inline-6, V6, or V8. This generation would be also the first ever to offer a powerful AMG model, which utilizes either a V8 or V12, which continued in later iterations of the SL.

Mercedes-Benz offered a high-performance variant of the Mercedes SL in 2008, dubbed the SL 65 AMG Black Series, which was powered by a 6.0 M275 V12 [=BiTurbo=] delivering 661 hp worth of power, and it's fitted with a five-speed AMG Speedshift Plus automatic transmission. Its top speed allows it to go past 322 km/h (200 mph) and can acceletate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds.

Many would say this would be the ultimate sports car. And it's arguably true.

The [=McLaren F1=] is a British supercar that debuted in 1991. Originally, it was a [[SuperPrototype concept]] made by British designer, Gordon Murray, who convinced Ron Dennis for full support of the project, while Peter Stevens designed the exterior and the interior.

Unique to his car comes unusual designs and technologies, such as having the driver's seat positioned in the centre with two passenger seats behind it. Hailing from America, the Eclipse is Mitsubishi's sports compact coupe produced in four generations from 1989 to 2011. Accorffding to Mitsubishi, the Eclipse name [[MeaningfulName was derived from the unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse of the same name]] that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

The first two generations share a platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. Due to Mitsubishi's partnership with Chrysler, they were known as Diamond-Star Motors. The third generation Eclipse share a platform with the Chrysler Sebring and the Dodge Stratus. In 2005, the 4th-generation Eclipse replaced the Chrysler platform, with the front fascia consistent with Mitsubishi's corporate styling features of the time.

In 2001, the third generation (Evolution VII-IX) was made in response to FIA's mandatory homologation rules in the. UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship. Basing from the large Lancer Cedia chassis, this version sees
further uprated refinements to the body, and is fitted with suspension from Bilstein. The Evolution VIII onwards introduces a higher performance trim called the MR (Mitsubishi Racing), and is fitted with BBS alloy rims and a 6-speed gearbox, with numerous special trims introduced exclusively to the UsefulNotes/UnitedKingdom.

The final generation, the Lancer Evolution X was based on its concept and prototype models, featuring a reworked body, a 6-speed dual clutch transmission and the introduction to the S-WAC (Super All Wheel Control). The Evolution ceased production in 2016 as it bids farewell with special Final Edition trim.

Throughout the ten generations, the Lancer Evolution has been widely involved in UsefulNotes/{{Rallying}}, mainly the UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship. The car became successful with Tommi Mäkinen winning the drivers championship four times in a row from 1996 to 1999, and as a result spawned the special Tommi Mäkinen Edition trim for the Lancer Evolution VI.

The Nissan GT-R (R35) is a car made by Nissan to succeed the Nissan Skyline GT-R, the high-performance version of the Nissan Skyline, in 2007. Being a ContinuityReboot of the GT-R nameplate, it serves as Nissan's premier 2+2 sports coupe.

It dates all the way back to the TurnOfTheMillennium when Nissan intended to build the world's finest supercar that would beat its competitors. The GT-R was originally part of its revival plan during the twilight of the R34 Skyline GT-R (as the succeeding V-series Skyline generations [[RevisitingTheRoots revisited their luxury sedan roots from the Prince Skyline days]], [[DecompositeCharacter thus separating the GT-R nameplate by intentions]]). Its very first SuperPrototype, the GT-R concept was unveiled during the Tokyo Motor Show in 2001. Nissan would confirm production, intends to worldwide markets in limited quantities. Nissan would eventually build a revised version in 2005, now called the GT-R Proto, also unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show. Officials say 80% to 90% of the body would base its production on that prototype, which in fact, actually happened.

After seven yeats of development, the GT-R was finally unveiled in 2007, built using the PM platform. A supercar combining high-performance with high-practicality of a grand tourer, new features include advanced aerodynamics, a new 473 hp 3.8 L twin-turbocharged [=VR38DETT=] V6 engine that sets the fastest accelerating car of 2009, an active suspension, a drivetrain with a rear mounted independent transaxle and its multifunctional-display designed by Creator/PolyphonyDigital, the creators of ''VideoGame/GranTurismo''. Arguably ''the'' most popular and ubiquitous JDM tuner and drift car there is.

[[ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming Derived from Sylvia, the nymph who served the goddess of the hunt, Diana]], the Nissan Silvia is a series of front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports cars produced from 1965 until the end of 2002. Various have been exported of Japan and [[MarketBasedTitle marketed]] as either the [=200SX=] or [=240SX=], usually sold under the Datsun brand.

It all began in 1964 when it was made public during the Tokyo Motor Show, built from an existing Nissan Fairlady platform. The first Silvia ([=CSP311=]) or the "Datsun Coupé 1500" began production in 1965, which all are handcrafted and built in limited quantities (with a mere 554 produced), utilizing a 1.6 L Nissan R inline-4 engine producing 95 hp. It was considered to be one of the fastest Japanese cars at that time when it was provided to local Tokyo metropolitan police for a patrolling car.

It was PutOnABus in 1968 before the Silvia marked its return in 1975, with its new S10 chassis, built on its all-new S platform. Intended to be a compact RWD sports car, this would see a massive production boom for the model, and saw massive exports to North American markets as the Datsun [=200SX=]. Through out its short 4-year life span from 1975 to 1979, it has produced over 145,000 units. It was followed by the S110, noted for its sharp design and similarities to the Nissan Leopard. It would later on be rebadged as the Nissan Gazelle. The S12 produced from 1983 to 1989, with its usage of its retractable pop-up headlights and its resemblance to the Toyota [=AE86=] Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno.

By 1988, Nissan launches the S13 which became extremely popular and perhaps the one that [[TropeCodifier codified]] the Silvia name. Upon its introduction, the S13 follows a unique suite of trim levels named after PlayingCardMotifs; ''J's'' which is the naturally-aspirated base, the ''Q's'', which is the intermediary level, which offers turbochargers as an option, and ''K's'', which is the flagship turbocharger model. On the same year, a separate fastback model, the [=180SX=] was released, built on the same S13 chassis. Both the Silvia and the [=180SX=] were marketed as the [=240SX=] in North America and the [=200SX=] in Europe. This was almost the same methodology used for the S14 Silvia in 1993, which was offered a larger turbocharge, as well as being also available in "Aero" variants with more ground effects and large rear spoilers.

In 1999, just as the TurnOfTheMillennium starts, Japan saw a brand new version of the Silvia, now as the S15 with aggressive styling as par to modern car design trends. Unlike the previous two predecessors, the Silvia trims are just simplified to just '''Spec-S''' and '''Spec-R''', representing naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines respectively. Both are also available in "Aero" variants, too. The S15 was only sold in Japan, but also had exports to Australia and New Zealand as the [=200SX=]. With strengthening emission laws and the spiking popularity of minivans hitting the sales of sports coupes, the Silvia ended production on August 2002.

The Silvia has been into various forms of motorsports ranging from the [=240RS=] that competed in Group B, to the super silhouette S12 that drew interest to many of the top tuners like HKS and Tomei. Other than that, Silvias have been widely used in drifting, especially the S13 through S15 models, due to its extreme versatility of the S-chassis. The Skyline GT-R is the top-of-the-line performance sports car based on the Nissan Skyline range of compact luxury sedans.

Arguably ''the'' most popular and ubiquitous JDM tuner and drift car there is.

[[ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming Derived from Sylvia, the nymph who served the goddess of the hunt, Diana]], the Nissan Silvia is a series of front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports cars produced from 1965 until the end of 2002. Various have been exported of Japan and [[MarketBasedTitle marketed]] as either the [=200SX=] or [=240SX=], usually sold under the Datsun brand.

It all began in 1964 when it was made public during the Tokyo Motor Show, built from an existing Nissan Fairlady platform. The first Silvia ([=CSP311=]) or the "Datsun Coupé 1500" began production in 1965, which all are handcrafted and built in limited quantities (with a mere 554 produced), utilizing a 1.6 L Nissan R inline-4 engine producing 95 hp. It was considered to be one of the fastest Japanese cars at that time when it was provided to local Tokyo metropolitan police for a patrolling car.

It was PutOnABus in 1968 before the Silvia marked its return in 1975, with its new S10 chassis, built on its all-new S platform. Intended to be a compact RWD sports car, this would see a massive production boom for the model, and saw massive exports to North American markets as the Datsun [=200SX=]. Through out its short 4-year life span from 1975 to 1979, it has produced over 145,000 units. It was followed by the S110, noted for its sharp design and similarities to the Nissan Leopard. It would later on be rebadged as the Nissan Gazelle. The S12 produced from 1983 to 1989, with its usage of its retractable pop-up headlights and its resemblance to the Toyota [=AE86=] Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno.

By 1988, Nissan launches the S13 which became extremely popular and perhaps the one that [[TropeCodifier codified]] the Silvia name. Upon its introduction, the S13 follows a unique suite of trim levels named after PlayingCardMotifs; ''J's'' which is the naturally-aspirated base, the ''Q's'', which is the intermediary level, which offers turbochargers as an option, and ''K's'', which is the flagship turbocharger model. On the same year, a separate fastback model, the [=180SX=] was released, built on the same S13 chassis. Both the Silvia and the [=180SX=] were marketed as the [=240SX=] in North America and the [=200SX=] in Europe. This was almost the same methodology used for the S14 Silvia in 1993, which was offered a larger turbocharge, as well as being also available in "Aero" variants with more ground effects and large rear spoilers.

In 1999, just as the TurnOfTheMillennium starts, Japan saw a brand new version of the Silvia, now as the S15 with aggressive styling as par to modern car design trends. Unlike the previous two predecessors, the Silvia trims are just simplified to just '''Spec-S''' and '''Spec-R''', representing naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines respectively. Both are also available in "Aero" variants, too. The S15 was only sold in Japan, but also had exports to Australia and New Zealand as the [=200SX=]. The Silvia has been into various forms of motorsports ranging from the [=240RS=] that competed in Group B, to the super silhouette S12 that drew interest to many of the top tuners like HKS and Tomei. Other than that, Silvias have been widely used in drifting, especially the S13 through S15 models, due to its extreme versatility of the S-chassis. This began widely popular in Japan's premiere drifting championship, the D1 Grand Prix, where about 50% of the drivers use Silvias as their choice of cars.
