** When Tress is struggling to come up with a plan her father goes to the local tavern and reminds the regulars of every favor he's ever done for them. * Tress saves the ship from rain in the Crimson by using a barrel of Verdant spores to grow a tree and ''lift the whole ship'' out of the way.
* Crow tries to sell Tress to the dragon. Tress turns it around by ''selling Crow to the dragon''. He's just so impressed by her audacity that he lets her argue her case. * Tress' escape from the island. Rather than hiding in a barrel, she steals the inspector's coat and uses the excuse of "finding" a stowaway to get on a ship headed towards the King's Island.
* Tress walks across the sea of deadly spores during a brief calm in the sea in order to escape the smugglers. This is one of the things that later convinces the pirates that she must be more than she says.
