* A meta example, thanks to Meng Xishi herself. While the OppositesAttract trope has been used for many kinds of relationships, romantic, platonic, or otherwise, it is hard to pull off a romance between two people whose philosophies are completely as opposite as ''yin'' and ''ying'' without suffering a lapse in the writing and the characterization of the two leads just to make it more plausible for them to forge a connection. But in Qian Qiu's case, it works perfectly; what's better is that both leads do not change who they fundamentally are. They improve and adjust, sure, but their core characters are nevertheless the same. Even then, by the end of the story, anyone can see why they would fall for each other. To do that requires some masterful writing, which Meng Xishi proves she has.

While interrogating him, Shen Qiao calmly listens to his ''shixiong's'' entire MotiveRant... before immediately destroying Tan Yuanchun's ''wugong'' and sentencing him to guard over Yu Ai's tomb for the remainder of his life, without ever being able to leave the tomb. Worse yet, from then on, he's now a dead man in Shen Qiao's eyes.
